ਜਪਿਓ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਕ ਜਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ॥
japio naam suk janak gur bachanee har har saran pare |
Suk-deva and Janak meditated on the Naam; following the Guru's Teachings, they sought the Sanctuary of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਦਾਲਦੁ ਭੰਜਿ ਸੁਦਾਮੇ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਾਇ ਤਰੇ ॥
daalad bhanj sudaame milio bhagatee bhaae tare |
God met Sudama and removed his poverty; through loving devotional worship, he crossed over.
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਾਰਥੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥
bhagat vachhal har naam kritaarath guramukh kripaa kare |1|
God is the Lover of His devotees; the Lord's Name is fufilling; God showers His Mercy on the Gurmukhs. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਉਧਰੇ ॥
mere man naam japat udhare |
O my mind, chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you will be saved.
ਧ੍ਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ ਬਿਦਰੁ ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dhraoo prahilaad bidar daasee sut guramukh naam tare |1| rahaau |
Dhroo, Prahlaad and Bidar the slave-girl's son, became Gurmukh, and through the Naam, crossed over. ||1||Pause||
ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਉਧਰੇ ॥
kalajug naam pradhaan padaarath bhagat janaa udhare |
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Naam is the supreme wealth; it saves the humble devotees.
ਨਾਮਾ ਜੈਦੇਉ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਚਨੁ ਸਭਿ ਦੋਖ ਗਏ ਚਮਰੇ ॥
naamaa jaideo kabeer trilochan sabh dokh ge chamare |
All the faults of Naam Dayv, Jai Dayv, Kabeer, Trilochan and Ravi Daas the leather-worker were covered.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਸੇ ਉਧਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਟਰੇ ॥੨॥
guramukh naam lage se udhare sabh kilabikh paap ttare |2|
Those who become Gurmukh, and remain attached to the Naam, are saved; all their sins are washed off. ||2||
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਸਭਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਦੋਖ ਪਰਹਰੇ ॥
jo jo naam japai aparaadhee sabh tin ke dokh parahare |
Whoever chants the Naam, all his sins and mistakes are taken away.
ਬੇਸੁਆ ਰਵਤ ਅਜਾਮਲੁ ਉਧਰਿਓ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਨਰਹਰੇ ॥
besuaa ravat ajaamal udhario mukh bolai naaraaein narahare |
Ajaamal, who had sex with prostitites, was saved, by chanting the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਉਗ੍ਰਸੈਣਿ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਤੋੜਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੩॥
naam japat ugrasain gat paaee torr bandhan mukat kare |3|
Chanting the Naam, Ugar Sain obtained salvation; his bonds were broken, and he was liberated. ||3||
ਜਨ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕਰੇ ॥
jan kau aap anugrahu keea har angeekaar kare |
God Himself takes pity on His humble servants, and makes them His own.
ਸੇਵਕ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੋਵਿਦੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਉਧਰੇ ॥
sevak paij rakhai meraa govid saran pare udhare |
My Lord of the Universe saves the honor of His servants; those who seek His Sanctuary are saved.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਉਰ ਧਰਿਓ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥
jan naanak har kirapaa dhaaree ur dhario naam hare |4|1|
The Lord has showered servant Nanak with His Mercy; he has enshrined the Lord's Name within his heart. ||4||1||

Maaroo, Fourth Mehl:
ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਜਪਿਓ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਪਿਆ ॥
sidh samaadh japio liv laaee saadhik mun japiaa |
The Siddhas in Samaadhi meditate on Him; they are lovingly focused on Him. The seekers and the silent sages meditate on Him as well.
ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਦਿਕ ਰਵਿਆ ॥
jatee satee santokhee dhiaaeaa mukh indraadik raviaa |
The celibates, the true and contented beings meditate on Him; Indra and the other gods chant His Name with their mouths.
ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਜਪਿਓ ਤੇ ਭਾਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੧॥
saran pare japio te bhaae guramukh paar peaa |1|
Those who seek His Sanctuary meditate on Him; they become Gurmukh and swim across. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਤਰਿਆ ॥
mere man naam japat tariaa |
O my mind, chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and cross over.
ਧੰਨਾ ਜਟੁ ਬਾਲਮੀਕੁ ਬਟਵਾਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dhanaa jatt baalameek battavaaraa guramukh paar peaa |1| rahaau |
Dhanna the farmer, and Balmik the highway robber, became Gurmukh, and crossed over. ||1||Pause||
ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬੇ ਜਪਿਓ ਰਿਖਿ ਬਪੁਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
sur nar gan gandharabe japio rikh bapurai har gaaeaa |
Angels, men, heavenly heralds and celestial singers meditate on Him; even the humble Rishis sing of the Lord.
ਸੰਕਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਦੇਵੀ ਜਪਿਓ ਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਆ ॥
sankar brahamai devee japio mukh har har naam japiaa |
Shiva, Brahma and the goddess Lakhshmi, meditate, and chant with their mouths the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੨॥
har har naam jinaa man bheenaa te guramukh paar peaa |2|
Those whose minds are drenched with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, as Gurmukh, cross over. ||2||
ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਤੇਤੀਸ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤਿਆ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kott kott tetees dhiaaeo har japatiaa ant na paaeaa |
Millions and millions, three hundred thirty million gods meditate on Him; there is no end to those who meditate on the Lord.
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
bed puraan simrit har japiaa mukh panddit har gaaeaa |
The Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees meditate on the Lord; the Pandits, the religious scholars, sing the Lord's Praises as well.
ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਾਲੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੩॥
naam rasaal jinaa man vasiaa te guramukh paar peaa |3|
Those whose minds are filled with the Naam, the source of nectar - as Gurmukh, they cross over. ||3||
ਅਨਤ ਤਰੰਗੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨ ਜਪਿਆ ਮੈ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਕਰਿ ਸਕਿਆ ॥
anat tarangee naam jin japiaa mai ganat na kar sakiaa |
Those who chant the Naam in endless waves - I cannot even count their number.
ਗੋਬਿਦੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਏ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
gobid kripaa kare thaae paae jo har prabh man bhaaeaa |
The Lord of the Universe bestows His Mercy, and those who are pleasing to the Mind of the Lord God, find their place.
ਗੁਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਓ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥
gur dhaar kripaa har naam drirraaeo jan naanak naam leaa |4|2|
The Guru, granting His Grace, implants the Lord's Name within; servant Nanak chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||2||

ਕਮਰ ਭਰਾਤ ਕੇ ਕੀ ਤੁਰਤੁ ਜਮਧਰ ਲਈ ਨਿਕਾਰਿ ॥
kamar bharaat ke kee turat jamadhar lee nikaar |
She withdrew the dagger from the waist of her brother,
ਕਿਯੋ ਪਯਾਨੌ ਮੀਤ ਪਹਿ ਉਦਰ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਮਾਰ ॥੩੫॥
kiyo payaanau meet peh udar kattaaree maar |35|
And thrust it into her own abdomen and fell near’the friend.(35)

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਮੀਤ ਤਹ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਰਾਯੋ ॥
pratham meet teh te nikaraayo |
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਿਰਛ ਤਰ ਆਨਿ ਸੁਵਾਯੋ ॥
bahur birachh tar aan suvaayo |
ਭ੍ਰਾਤਨ ਮੋਹ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਲਖਿ ਕਿਯੋ ॥
bhraatan moh bahur lakh kiyo |
ਸਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਟਾਗਿ ਜਾਡ ਪਰ ਦਿਯੋ ॥੩੬॥
sasatran ttaag jaadd par diyo |36|
ਪ੍ਰਥਮੈ ਰੂਪ ਹੇਰਿ ਤਿਹ ਬਿਗਸੀ ॥
prathamai roop her tih bigasee |
ਨਿਜੁ ਪਤਿ ਕੈ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਲੈ ਨਿਕਸੀ ॥
nij pat kai taa kau lai nikasee |
First she had run away with the friend, then made him to sleep under the tree.
ਭ੍ਰਾਤਿਨ ਹੇਰਿ ਮੋਹ ਮਨ ਆਯੋ ॥
bhraatin her moh man aayo |
ਨਿਜੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕੋ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਾਯੋ ॥੩੭॥
nij preetam ko naas karaayo |37|
Then she was over taken by the love for her brothers and got her lover annihilated.(37)
ਵਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਪੀਰ ਪਿਯਾ ਕੇ ਬਰੀ ॥
veh triy peer piyaa ke baree |
ਆਪਹੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਮਰੀ ॥
aapahu maar kattaaree maree |
The woman, then, thought of her lover and killed herself with a dagger.
ਜੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਚਰਿਤ ਚਹੈ ਸੁ ਬਨਾਵੈ ॥
jo triy charit chahai su banaavai |
ਦੇਵ ਅਦੇਵ ਭੇਵ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩੮॥
dev adev bhev neh paavai |38|
Whatever the way a woman desires, she beguiles and, not even the gods and devils can understand her strategy.(38)

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਤਹਾ ਤੇ ਕਾਢਿ ਕੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਨਿਜੁ ਮੀਤ ਹਨਾਇ ॥
pratham tahaa te kaadt kai pun nij meet hanaae |
First she had absconded and then got him killed,
ਪੁਨਿ ਜਮਧਰ ਉਰ ਹਨਿ ਮਰੀ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਮੋਹ ਕੇ ਭਾਇ ॥੩੯॥
pun jamadhar ur han maree bhraat moh ke bhaae |39|
And, for sake of her love for her brothers, she killed herself with a dagger.(39)
ਭੂਤ ਭਵਿਖ ਭਵਾਨ ਮੈ ਸੁਨਿਯਤ ਸਦਾ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
bhoot bhavikh bhavaan mai suniyat sadaa banaae |
This will remain prevalent in the present and the future that,
ਚਤੁਰਿ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੌ ਸਦਾ ਭੇਵ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥੪੦॥
chatur charitran kau sadaa bhev na paayo jaae |40|
The secrets of the delusions of a clever woman cannot be conceived.(40)(1)

ਸੁਮਤਿ ਕੁਅਰਿ ਰਾਨੀ ਇਕ ਸੁਨੀ ॥

ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਬਿਖੈ ਅਤਿ ਗੁਨੀ ॥
bed puraan bikhai at gunee |
There had been a Rani called Sumat Kumari who was adept in Vedas and Puranas.
ਸਿਵ ਕੀ ਅਧਿਕ ਉਪਾਸਕ ਰਹੈ ॥
siv kee adhik upaasak rahai |
ਹਰ ਹਰ ਸਦਾ ਬਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਕਹੈ ॥੧॥
har har sadaa bakatr te kahai |1|
She worshipped god Shiva and all the time meditated on his name.(1)
ਬਿਸਨ ਸਿਖ︀ਯ ਰਾਜਾ ਜੂ ਰਹਈ ॥
bisan sikhay raajaa joo rahee |
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਬਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਕਹਈ ॥
har har sadaa bakatr te kahee |
Raja worshipped god Vishnu and always reflected on his appellation.
ਸਿਵ ਕੌ ਨੈਕ ਨ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਲ︀ਯਾਵੈ ॥
siv kau naik na man mai layaavai |
ਸਦਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਦੇ ਗੀਤਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
sadaa krisan de geetan gaavai |2|
He would never recollect Shiva and continuously recounted the praises of Krishna.(2)
ਰਾਨੀ ਸੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰੈ ॥
raanee so ih bhaat uchaarai |
ਤੈ ਸਿਵ ਸਿਵ ਕਾਹੇ ਕੌ ਬਿਚਾਰੈ ॥
tai siv siv kaahe kau bichaarai |
He reprimanded Rani as well why did she think of Shiva so much.
ਚਮਤਕਾਰ ਯਾ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
chamatakaar yaa mai kachh naahee |
ਯੌ ਆਵਤ ਮੋਰੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੩॥
yau aavat more man maahee |3|
‘My mind is convinced that he has no celestial powers.’(3)
ਚਮਤਕਾਰ ਸਿਵ ਤੁਮੈ ਬਤਾਊਾਂ ॥
chamatakaar siv tumai bataaooaan |
ਤੋ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਮਾਰਗ ਲ︀ਯਾਊਂ ॥
to tum ko ih maarag layaaoon |
(Her reply) ‘I will show you the miraculous power of Shiva and then you will be convinced.
ਤੈ ਸਿਵ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਚਰਿਤ ਨ ਜਾਨੋ ॥
tai siv ko kachh charit na jaano |
ਧਨ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ ਤੇ ਭਯੋ ਦਿਵਾਨੋ ॥੪॥
dhan prasaad te bhayo divaano |4|
‘You don’t realize the Chritars of Shiva, as you are just confined to your palaces and treasure.(4)
