Maaroo, Third Mehl:
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਗੁਨਹ ਬਖਸਾਇ ਜੀਉ ਅਬ ਤੂ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
pichhale gunah bakhasaae jeeo ab too maarag paae |
Please forgive my past mistakes, O my Dear Lord; now, please place me on the Path.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੧॥
har kee charanee laag rahaa vichahu aap gavaae |1|
I remain attached to the Lord's Feet, and eradicate self-conceit from within. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥
mere man guramukh naam har dhiaae |
O my mind, as Gurmukh, meditate on the Name of the Lord.
ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹਾ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਏਕੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sadaa har charanee laag rahaa ik man ekai bhaae |1| rahaau |
Remain attached forever to the Lord's Feet, single-mindedly, with love for the One Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾ ਮੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਮੈ ਥੇਹੁ ਨ ਥਾਉ ॥
naa mai jaat na pat hai naa mai thehu na thaau |
I have no social status or honor; I have no place or home.
ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਟਿਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਆ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥੨॥
sabad bhed bhram kattiaa gur naam deea samajhaae |2|
Pierced through by the Word of the Shabad, my doubts have been cut away. The Guru has inspired me to understand the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਲਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
eihu man laalach karadaa firai laalach laagaa jaae |
This mind wanders around, driven by greed, totally attached to greed.
ਧੰਧੈ ਕੂੜਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਇ ॥੩॥
dhandhai koorr viaapiaa jam pur chottaa khaae |3|
He is engrossed in false pursuits; he shall endure beatings in the City of Death. ||3||
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
naanak sabh kichh aape aap hai doojaa naahee koe |
O Nanak, God Himself Himself is all-in-all. There is no other at all.
ਭਗਤਿ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਬਖਸਿਓਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੩॥
bhagat khajaanaa bakhasion guramukhaa sukh hoe |4|3|
He bestows the treasure of devotional worship, and the Gurmukhs abide in peace. ||4||3||

Maaroo, Third Mehl:
ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਟੋਲਿ ਲਹੁ ਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
sach rate se ttol lahu se virale sansaar |
Seek and find those who are imbued with Truth; they are so rare in this world.
ਤਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਮੁਖੁ ਉਜਲਾ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
tin miliaa mukh ujalaa jap naam muraar |1|
Meeting with them, one's face becomes radiant and bright, chanting the Name of the Lord. ||1||
ਬਾਬਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
baabaa saachaa saahib ridai samaal |
O Baba, contemplate and cherish the True Lord and Master within your heart.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਪੁਛਿ ਦੇਖੁ ਲੇਹੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satigur apanaa puchh dekh lehu vakhar bhaal |1| rahaau |
Seek out and see, and ask your True Guru, and obtain the true commodity. ||1||Pause||
ਇਕੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਭ ਸੇਵਦੀ ਧੁਰਿ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
eik sachaa sabh sevadee dhur bhaag milaavaa hoe |
All serve the One True Lord; through pre-ordained destiny, they meet Him.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥
guramukh mile se na vichhurreh paaveh sach soe |2|
The Gurmukhs merge with Him, and will not be separated from Him again; they attain the True Lord. ||2||
ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥
eik bhagatee saar na jaananee manamukh bharam bhulaae |
Some do not appreciate the value of devotional worship; the self-willed manmukhs are deluded by doubt.
ਓਨਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
onaa vich aap varatadaa karanaa kichhoo na jaae |3|
They are fillled with self-conceit; they cannot accomplish anything. ||3||
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਖਲੇ ਕੀਚੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
jis naal jor na chalee khale keechai aradaas |
Stand and offer your prayer, to the One who cannot be moved by force.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੪॥
naanak guramukh naam man vasai taa sun kare saabaas |4|4|
O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides within the mind of the Gurmukh; hearing his prayer, the Lord applauds him. ||4||4||

Maaroo, Third Mehl:
ਮਾਰੂ ਤੇ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਕਰੇ ਮਨੂਰਹੁ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
maaroo te seetal kare manoorahu kanchan hoe |
He transforms the burning desert into a cool oasis; he transmutes rusted iron into gold.
ਸੋ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਤਿਸੁ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
so saachaa saalaaheeai tis jevadd avar na koe |1|
So praise the True Lord; there is none other as great as He is. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
mere man anadin dhiaae har naau |
O my mind, night and day, meditate on the Lord's Name.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਤੂ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satigur kai bachan araadh too anadin gun gaau |1| rahaau |
Contemplate the Word of the Guru's Teachings, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, night and day. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਇ ॥
guramukh eko jaaneeai jaa satigur dee bujhaae |
As Gurmukh, one comes to know the One Lord, when the True Guru instructs him.
ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿਦੂ ਏਹ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
so satigur saalaaheeai jidoo eeh sojhee paae |2|
Praise the True Guru, who imparts this understanding. ||2||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਨਿ ਅਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
satigur chhodd doojai lage kiaa karan agai jaae |
Those who forsake the True Guru, and attach themselves to duality - what will they do when they go to the world hereafter?
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
jam pur badhe maareeeh bahutee milai sajaae |3|
Bound and gagged in the City of Death, they will be beaten. They will be punished severely. ||3||
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਇ ॥
meraa prabh veparavaahu hai naa tis til na tamaae |
My God is independent and self-sufficient; he does not have even an iota of greed.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਭਜਿ ਪਉ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੪॥੫॥
naanak tis saranaaee bhaj pau aape bakhas milaae |4|5|
O Nanak, run to His Sanctuary; granting His forgiveness, He merges us into Himself. ||4||5||

ਸੁਨੋ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਿਸਿ ਭਈ ਹ︀ਯਾਂ ਨ ਪਹੂਚਹੁ ਆਇ ॥
suno mitr bin nis bhee hayaan na pahoochahu aae |
‘Listen my friend; don’t come here before the night falls.
ਜਿਨ ਕੋਊ ਸੋਧਿ ਪਛਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਤਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੮॥
jin koaoo sodh pachhaan kai tin prat kahai na jaae |18|
‘Some body may recognise you and may go to tell my parents.(18)

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਸਖੀ ਤਿਹ ਆਨਿ ਜਤਾਯੋ ॥

ਬੈਠਿ ਬਾਗ ਮੈ ਦਿਵਸ ਬਿਤਾਯੋ ॥
baitth baag mai divas bitaayo |
The friend came, made him to understand and then by sitting in the garden, he spent the day.
ਸੂਰਜ ਛਪਿਯੋ ਰੈਨਿ ਜਬ ਭਈ ॥
sooraj chhapiyo rain jab bhee |
ਬਾਟ ਗਾਵ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕੀ ਲਈ ॥੧੯॥
baatt gaav taa ke kee lee |19|
When the Sun was set, it became dark, he took to his way to her village.(19)
ਰੈਨਿ ਭਈ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਤਬ ਗਯੋ ॥
rain bhee taa ke tab gayo |
ਡਾਰਤ ਬਾਜ ਪ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਿਹ ਭਯੋ ॥
ddaarat baaj prisatt tih bhayo |
When it was total dark, he went to her and took her on the back of his horse.
ਹਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦੇਸੌਰ ਸਿਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
har taa ko desauar sidhaariyo |
ਜੋ ਪਹੁਚਿਯੋ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਸਰ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੨੦॥
jo pahuchiyo taa ko sar maariyo |20|
After taking her away he started to go to another country and who so ever followed he killed him with the arrows.(20)
ਰੈਨਿ ਸਕਲ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲੈ ਗਯੋ ॥
rain sakal taa ko lai gayo |
ਉਤਰਤ ਚੜੇ ਦਿਵਸ ਕੇ ਭਯੋ ॥
autarat charre divas ke bhayo |
He kept on travelling whole night and when day broke he dismounted.
ਥੋ ਸੁ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਨ ਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
tho su kumaar adhik tan haariyo |
Himself he was tired and he was carrying with him Sahiban as well,
ਔਰ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਸਾਥ ਬਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੨੧॥
aauar saahibaa saath bihaariyo |21|
He felt exhausted and went to sleep and, on the other side, her all the relatives realised.(21)
ਸ੍ਰਮਤ ਭਯੋ ਤਹ ਕਛੁ ਸ੍ਵੈ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥
sramat bhayo teh kachh svai rahiyo |
ਤਬ ਲੌ ਸਭ ਸਮਧਿਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਲਯੋ ॥
tab lau sabh samadhin sun layo |
ਚੜੇ ਤੁਰੈ ਸਭ ਸੂਰ ਰਿਸਾਏ ॥
charre turai sabh soor risaae |
ਬਾਧੇ ਗੋਲ ਤਹਾ ਕਹ ਧਾਏ ॥੨੨॥
baadhe gol tahaa keh dhaae |22|
Infuriated, they set up teams and marched tOwards that direction.(22)
ਤਬ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਛੋਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਾ ॥
tab saahibaa drig chhor nihaaraa |
ਹੇਰੈ ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਅਸਵਾਰਾ ॥
herai chahoon or asavaaraa |
When Sahiban opened her eyes, she saw the riders on all sides.
ਸੰਗ ਭਾਈ ਦੋਊ ਤਾਹਿ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
sang bhaaee doaoo taeh nihaare |
ਕਰੁਣਾ ਬਹੇ ਨੈਨ ਕਜਰਾਰੇ ॥੨੩॥
karunaa bahe nain kajaraare |23|
With them, when she saw her two brothers, she could not help her tears.(23)
ਜੌ ਹਮਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਇਨੇ ਨਿਹਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
jau hamare pat ine nihar hai |
ਦੁਹੂੰ ਬਾਨ ਦੁਹੂਅਨੰ ਕਹ ਹਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
duhoon baan duhooanan keh har hai |
‘If my husband saw them, he will kill them both with two arrows.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕਛੂ ਜਤਨ ਅਬ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
taa te kachhoo jatan ab keejai |
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਰਾਖਿ ਭਾਇਯਨ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੨੪॥
jaa te raakh bhaaeiyan leejai |24|
‘Something must be done, so that my brothers are spared.’(24)
ਸੋਵਤ ਹੁਤੋ ਮੀਤ ਨ ਜਗਾਯੋ ॥
sovat huto meet na jagaayo |
ਜਾਡ ਭਏ ਤਰਕਸ ਅਟਕਾਯੋ ॥
jaadd bhe tarakas attakaayo |
She did not wake her friend up but took his quiver and hung it Over the tree.
ਔਰ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਲੈ ਕਹੂੰ ਦੁਰਾਏ ॥
aauar sasatr lai kahoon duraae |
ਖੋਜੇ ਹੁਤੇ ਜਾਤ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੨੫॥
khoje hute jaat neh paae |25|
Also she hid away his other weapons so that he could not find them.(25)
ਤਬ ਲੌ ਆਇ ਸੂਰ ਸਭ ਗਏ ॥
tab lau aae soor sabh ge |
ਮਾਰੋ ਮਾਰ ਪੁਕਾਰਤ ਭਏ ॥
maaro maar pukaarat bhe |
In the meantime, all the gallant ones came and shoUted ‘kill him, kill him’.
ਤਬ ਮਿਰਜਾ ਜੂ ਨੈਨ ਉਘਾਰੇ ॥
tab mirajaa joo nain ughaare |
ਕਹਾ ਗਏ ਹਥਿਯਾਰ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੨੬॥
kahaa ge hathiyaar hamaare |26|
Then Mirza opened his eyes and asked where were his weapons.(26)
ਭੌਡੀ ਰਾਡ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਕ︀ਯਾ ਕਰਿਯੋ ॥
bhauaddee raadd kahiyo kayaa kariyo |
ਤਰਕਸ ਟਾਗਿ ਜਾਡ ਪੈ ਧਰਿਯੋ ॥
tarakas ttaag jaadd pai dhariyo |
‘Oh, you the mean woman, why have you. done this and hung my quiver on the tree?
ਪਹੁਚੇ ਆਨਿ ਪਖਰਿਯਾ ਭਾਰੇ ॥
pahuche aan pakhariyaa bhaare |
ਕਹਾ ਧਰੇ ਤੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੨੭॥
kahaa dhare te sasatr hamaare |27|
‘The riders have come nearer, where have you put my weapons?(27)
ਸਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਹੋ ਕਿਹ ਮਾਰੋ ॥
sasatran binaa kaho kih maaro |
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਰੀ ਕ︀ਯਾ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਚਾਰੋ ॥
kahu naaree kayaa mantr bichaaro |
‘Say something woman, withoUt weapons, how can kill them?
ਸਾਥੀ ਕੋਊ ਸੰਗ ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
saathee koaoo sang mai naahee |
ਚਿੰਤਾ ਅਧਿਕ ਇਹੈ ਚਿਤ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੨੮॥
chintaa adhik ihai chit maahee |28|
‘Afraid, I have no friend of mine with me.’(28)
ਹੇਰ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਆਯੁਧ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
her rahiyo aayudh neh paae |
ਤਬ ਲਗ ਘੇਰ ਦੁਬਹਿਯਾ ਆਏ ॥
tab lag gher dubahiyaa aae |
In spite of searching hard, he could not find his weapons;
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਬਾਜ ਪ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਪਰ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
triy ko baaj prisatt par ddaariyo |
ਨਗਰ ਆਪਨੇ ਓਰ ਸਿਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੨੯॥
nagar aapane or sidhaariyo |29|
in the meantime they had surrounded him.(29)
ਬਿਨੁ ਆਯੁਧ ਭਜਿ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
bin aayudh bhaj chaliyo nihaariyo |
ਨਿਰਭੈ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਸਭਹੂੰਨ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
nirabhai hvai sabhahoon bichaariyo |
They had intended to put the woman on the saddle of a horse
ਇਨ ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨ ਕੌ ਜਾਨ ਨ ਦੈਹੌ ॥
ein duhoonan kau jaan na daihau |
ਯਾ ਕੌ ਮਾਰਿ ਆਜੁ ਹੀ ਲੈਹੈ ॥੩੦॥
yaa kau maar aaj hee laihai |30|
and ran away to the town.(30)
ਕੋਊ ਪਕਰਿ ਸੈਹਥੀ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
koaoo pakar saihathee dhaayo |
ਕਿਨੂੰ ਕਾਢਿ ਕਰ ਖੜਗ ਨਚਾਯੋ ॥
kinoo kaadt kar kharrag nachaayo |
Some raided with daggers and some brandished swords.
ਕਿਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਾਨਨ ਕੀ ਕਰੀ ॥
kinoo maar baanan kee karee |
ਪਾਗ ਉਤਰਿ ਮਿਰਜਾ ਕੀ ਪਰੀ ॥੩੧॥
paag utar mirajaa kee paree |31|
Some shot arrows and Mirza’s turban was toppled over.(31)
ਪਾਗ ਉਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਜਬ ਗਈ ॥
paag utar taa kee jab gee |
ਮੂੰਡੀ ਹੋਤਿ ਨਾਗ ਤਿਹ ਭਈ ॥
moonddee hot naag tih bhee |
With turban off, his head became bare,
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਅਧਿਕ ਕੇਸ ਤਿਹ ਛੂਟੇ ॥
sundar adhik kes tih chhootte |
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਸੂਰ ਜੁਧ ਕਹ ਜੂਟੇ ॥੩੨॥
jab hee soor judh keh jootte |32|
And his beaUtiful hair flared when the raiders started the fight.(32)
ਕਿਨੀ ਬਿਸਿਖ ਕਸਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
kinee bisikh kas taeh prahaariyo |
ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਖੜਗ ਕਾਢਿ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
kinahoon kharrag kaadt tih maariyo |
ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਵਾਰਿ ਗੁਰਜ ਕੋ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
kinahoon vaar guraj ko keeno |
ਖੇਤ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਰਜਾ ਕੌ ਲੀਨੋ ॥੩੩॥
khet maar mirajaa kau leeno |33|
ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮ ਨਾਸ ਮਿਰਜਾ ਕੌ ਕਰਿਯੋ ॥
pritham naas mirajaa kau kariyo |
ਬਹੁਰੌ ਜਾਇ ਸਾਹਿਬਹਿ ਧਰਿਯੋ ॥
bahurau jaae saahibeh dhariyo |
First they killed Mirza and then, some went and grasped Sahiban.
ਬੈਠੇ ਤਿਸੀ ਬਿਰਛ ਤਰ ਆਈ ॥
baitthe tisee birachh tar aaee |
ਜਹ ਤਿਨ ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨ ਰੈਨਿ ਬਿਤਾਈ ॥੩੪॥
jeh tin duhoonan rain bitaaee |34|
She ran to the tree, under which they had spent the night.(34)
