ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਲੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
har har naam nidhaan lai guramat har pat paae |
Take the treasure of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. Follow the Guru's Teachings, and the Lord shall bless you with honor.
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤੇ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇ ॥
halat palat naal chaladaa har ante le chhaddaae |
Here and hereafter, the Lord goes with you; in the end, He shall deliver you.
ਜਿਥੈ ਅਵਘਟ ਗਲੀਆ ਭੀੜੀਆ ਤਿਥੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਇ ॥੧॥
jithai avaghatt galeea bheerreea tithai har har mukat karaae |1|
Where the path is difficult and the street is narrow, there the Lord shall liberate you. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇ ॥
mere satiguraa mai har har naam drirraae |
O my True Guru, implant within me the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਬੰਧਪੋ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
meraa maat pitaa sut bandhapo mai har bin avar na maae |1| rahaau |
The Lord is my mother, father, child and relative; I have none other than the Lord, O my mother. ||1||Pause||
ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਆਣਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਮਾਇ ॥
mai har birahee har naam hai koee aan milaavai maae |
I feel the pains of love and yearning for the Lord, and the Name of the Lord. If only someone would come and unite me with Him, O my mother.
ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਮੈ ਜੋਦੜੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
tis aagai mai jodarree meraa preetam dee milaae |
I bow in humble devotion to one who inspires me to meet with my Beloved.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਦਇਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
satigur purakh deaal prabh har mele dtil na paae |2|
The almighty and merciful True Guru unites me with the Lord God instantaneously. ||2||
ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
jin har har naam na chetio se bhaagaheen mar jaae |
Those who do not remember the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, are most unfortunate, and are slaughtered.
ਓਇ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
oe fir fir jon bhavaaeeeh mar jameh aavai jaae |
They wander in reincarnation, again and again; they die, and are re-born, and continue coming and going.
ਓਇ ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
oe jam dar badhe maareeeh har daragah milai sajaae |3|
Bound and gagged at Death's Door, they are cruelly beaten, and punished in the Court of the Lord. ||3||
ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਮ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
too prabh ham saranaagatee mo kau mel laihu har raae |
O God, I seek Your Sanctuary; O my Sovereign Lord King, please unite me with Yourself.
ਹਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਜਗਜੀਵਨਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥
har dhaar kripaa jagajeevanaa gur satigur kee saranaae |
O Lord, Life of the World, please shower me with Your Mercy; grant me the Sanctuary of the Guru, the True Guru.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਾਇ ॥੪॥੧॥੩॥
har jeeo aap deaal hoe jan naanak har melaae |4|1|3|
The Dear Lord, becoming merciful, has blended servant Nanak with Himself. ||4||1||3||

ਹਉ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਸਾਇਦਾ ਕੋ ਦਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
hau poonjee naam dasaaeidaa ko dase har dhan raas |
I inquire about the commodity of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Is there anyone who can show me the wealth, the capital of the Lord?
ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਖਨ ਖੰਨੀਐ ਮੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
hau tis vittahu khan khaneeai mai mele har prabh paas |
I cut myself into pieces, and make myself a sacrifice to that one who leads me to meet my Lord God.
ਮੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਪਿਰੰਮ ਕਾ ਕਿਉ ਸਜਣੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
mai antar prem piram kaa kiau sajan milai milaas |1|
I am filled with the Love of my Beloved; how can I meet my Friend, and merge with Him? ||1||
ਮਨ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
man piaariaa mitraa mai har har naam dhan raas |
O my beloved friend, my mind, I take the wealth, the capital of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਧੀਰਕ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur poorai naam drirraaeaa har dheerak har saabaas |1| rahaau |
The Perfect Guru has implanted the Naam within me; the Lord is my support - I celebrate the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੈ ਦਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
har har aap milaae gur mai dase har dhan raas |
O my Guru, please unite me with the Lord, Har, Har; show me the wealth, the capital of the Lord.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਜਨ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ॥
bin gur prem na labhee jan vekhahu man nirajaas |
Without the Guru, love does not well up; see this, and know it in your mind.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਪੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
har gur vich aap rakhiaa har mele gur saabaas |2|
The Lord has installed Himself within the Guru; so praise the Guru, who unites us with the Lord. ||2||
ਸਾਗਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
saagar bhagat bhanddaar har poore satigur paas |
The ocean, the treasure of devotional worship of the Lord, rests with the Perfect True Guru.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਖੋਲਿ ਦੇਇ ਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥
satigur tutthaa khol dee mukh guramukh har paragaas |
When it pleases the True Guru, He opens the treasure, and and the Gurmukhs are illuminated by the Lord's Light.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਗ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਤਿਖ ਮੁਈਆ ਕੰਧੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
manamukh bhaag vihooniaa tikh mueea kandhee paas |3|
The unfortunate self-willed manmukhs die of thirst, on the very bank of the river. ||3||
ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਹਉ ਮਾਗਉ ਦਾਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
gur daataa daataar hai hau maagau daan gur paas |
The Guru is the Great Giver; I beg for this gift from the Guru,
ਚਿਰੀ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਵਡੜੀ ਆਸ ॥
chiree vichhunaa mel prabh mai man tan vaddarree aas |
that He may unite me with God, from whom I was separated for so long! This is the great hope of my mind and body.
ਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੪॥
gur bhaavai sun benatee jan naanak kee aradaas |4|2|4|
If it pleases You, O my Guru, please listen to my prayer; this is servant Nanak's prayer. ||4||2||4||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
har har kathaa sunaae prabh guramat har ridai samaanee |
O Lord God, please preach Your sermon to me. Through the Guru's Teachings, the Lord is merged into my heart.
ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਵਡਭਾਗੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਉਤਮ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ॥
jap har har kathaa vaddabhaageea har utam pad nirabaanee |
Meditate on the sermon of the Lord, Har, Har, O very fortunate ones; the Lord shall bless you with the most sublime status of Nirvaanaa.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਮਨਿ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
guramukhaa man parateet hai gur poorai naam samaanee |1|
The minds of the Gurmukhs are filled with faith; through the Perfect Guru, they merge in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੀ ॥
man mere mai har har kathaa man bhaanee |
O my mind, the sermon of the Lord, Har, Har, is pleasing to my mind.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਨਿਤ ਸਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har har kathaa nit sadaa kar guramukh akath kahaanee |1| rahaau |
Continually and forever, speak the sermon of the Lord, Har, Har; as Gurmukh, speak the Unspoken Speech. ||1||Pause||
ਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਖੋਜਿ ਢੰਢੋਲਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ॥
mai man tan khoj dtandtoliaa kiau paaeeai akath kahaanee |
I have searched through and through my mind and body; how can I attain this Unspoken Speech?
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੁਣਿ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੀ ॥
sant janaa mil paaeaa sun akath kathaa man bhaanee |
Meeting with the humble Saints, I have found it; listening to the Unspoken Speech, my mind is pleased.
ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
merai man tan naam adhaar har mai mele purakh sujaanee |2|
The Lord's Name is the Support of my mind and body; I am united with the all-knowing Primal Lord God. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
gur purakhai purakh milaae prabh mil suratee surat samaanee |
The Guru, the Primal Being, has united me with the Primal Lord God. My consciousness has merged into the supreme consciousness.
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੁਘੜ ਸੁਜਾਣੀ ॥
vaddabhaagee gur seviaa har paaeaa sugharr sujaanee |
By great good fortune, I serve the Guru, and I have found my Lord, all-wise and all-knowing.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਾਗ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਦੁਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
manamukh bhaag vihooniaa tin dukhee rain vihaanee |3|
The self-willed manmukhs are very unfortunate; they pass their life-night in misery and pain. ||3||
ਹਮ ਜਾਚਿਕ ਦੀਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰਿਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
ham jaachik deen prabh teriaa mukh deejai amrit baanee |
I am just a meek beggar at Your Door, God; please, place the Ambrosial Word of Your Bani in my mouth.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਸੁਘੜ ਸੁਜਾਣੀ ॥
satigur meraa mitru prabh har melahu sugharr sujaanee |
The True Guru is my friend; He unites me with my all-wise, all-knowing Lord God.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੪॥੩॥੫॥
jan naanak saranaagatee kar kirapaa naam samaanee |4|3|5|
Servant Nanak has entered Your Sanctuary; grant Your Grace, and merge me into Your Name. ||4||3||5||

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰ ਕੌ ਘਾਇ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰਾਰਿ ਕਹਾਯੋ ॥
pratham tripur kau ghaae rudr tripuraar kahaayo |
‘Primarily Shiva killed the Devil Tripur and was honoured as Tripukiller.
ਗੰਗ ਜਟਨ ਮੈ ਧਾਰਿ ਗੰਗਧਰ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਹਾਯੋ ॥
gang jattan mai dhaar gangadhar naam suhaayo |
Then, with tresses imbued in colours, he earned the admirations as god Gandharabh.
ਜਟਾ ਜੂਟ ਕੌ ਧਾਰਿ ਜਟੀ ਨਾਮਾ ਸਦ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
jattaa joott kau dhaar jattee naamaa sad sohai |
With the tresses as such he was worthy of being called god of Jatty.
ਖਗ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਜਛ ਭੁਜੰਗ ਅਸੁਰ ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਮੁਨਿ ਮੋਹੈ ॥
khag mrig jachh bhujang asur sur nar mun mohai |
Animals, birds, Jachh, Bhujang, the gods, the evils, men, women and sages, all became fond of him.
ਕਰੀ ਪਾਰਬਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਪਾਰਬਤੀਸ੍ਵਰ ਸਭ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
karee paarabatee naar paarabateesvar sabh jaanai |
Being married to Parbati he is addressed as Parbati-spouse as well.
ਕਹਾ ਮੂੜ ਤੈ ਰਾਵ ਭੇਦ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਪਹਿਚਾਨੇ ॥੫॥
kahaa moorr tai raav bhed taa kau pahichaane |5|
But, you, Oh Foolish Raja, cannot comprehend such mysteries.(5)

ਚਮਤਕਾਰ ਤੋ ਕੌ ਤੁਰਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਥਮੈ ਦੇਊ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥

‘First I will show you Shiva’s miracle,
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਸਿਖ︀ਯ ਸਿਵ ਕੋ ਕਰੌ ਯਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਮੈ ਲ︀ਯਾਇ ॥੬॥
bahur sikhay siv ko karau yaa maarag mai layaae |6|
‘And then I will put you on his righteous path.’(6)

ਸੋਇ ਗਯੋ ਤਬ ਪਤਿਹਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
soe gayo tab patihi nihaariyo |
ਤੁਰਤ ਖਾਟ ਤੇ ਪਕਰਿ ਪਛਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
turat khaatt te pakar pachhaariyo |
When he was sleeping, she jumped over and swiftly turned over his bed.
ਸਿਵ ਸਿਵ ਸਿਵ ਆਪਨ ਤਬ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
siv siv siv aapan tab keeno |
ਕਛੂ ਰਾਵ ਯਹ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਚੀਨੋ ॥੭॥
kachhoo raav yeh bhed na cheeno |7|
And continuously orated, Shiva, Shiva, Shiva but Raja could not perceive the enigma.(7)
ਕਿਨ ਧੈ ਕੈ ਮੋ ਕੌ ਪਟਕਾਯੋ ॥
kin dhai kai mo kau pattakaayo |
ਰਾਨੀ ਮੈ ਯਹ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
raanee mai yeh kachhoo na paayo |
(He said) ‘Some body has toppled over my bed, and, Rani, I could not discern.’
ਸਕਲ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਤੁਮ ਹਮੈ ਸੁਨਾਵੋ ॥
sakal brithaa tum hamai sunaavo |
ਹਮਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਕੋ ਤਾਪ ਮਿਟਾਵੋ ॥੮॥
hamare chit ko taap mittaavo |8|
(Rani) ‘Please tell me in details and open up your mind.(8)
ਕਛੂ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਤੁਮ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥
kachhoo rudr tum bachan uchaare |
ਤਬ ਊਪਰ ਸਿਵ ਕੁਪਿਯੋ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
tab aoopar siv kupiyo tihaare |
‘You must have spoken badly about Shiva and, now, you are facing Shiva’s wrath.
ਚਮਤਕਾਰ ਯਹ ਤੁਮੈ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ ॥
chamatakaar yeh tumai dikhaayo |
ਪਟਕਿ ਖਾਟ ਤੇ ਭੂਮਿ ਗਿਰਾਯੋ ॥੯॥
pattak khaatt te bhoom giraayo |9|
‘He has shown you his miracle by knocking you down the bed.’(9)
ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਤਿ ਡਰਿਯੋ ॥
sunat bachan moorakh at ddariyo |
ਤਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਪਾਇਨ ਉਠਿ ਪਰਿਯੋ ॥
taa triy ko paaein utth pariyo |
Learning this, the foolish Raja dreaded and fell upon the feet of the woman.
ਬਿਸਨ ਜਾਪ ਅਬ ਤੇ ਮੈ ਤ︀ਯਾਗਿਯੋ ॥
bisan jaap ab te mai tayaagiyo |
ਸਿਵ ਜੂ ਕੇ ਪਾਇਨ ਸੌ ਲਾਗਿਯੋ ॥੧੦॥
siv joo ke paaein sau laagiyo |10|
‘I abandon the meditation upon Vishnu and will, from now on, remain attached to the feet of Shiva.(10)
ਚਮਤਕਾਰ ਸਿਵ ਮੋਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
chamatakaar siv mohi dikhaariyo |
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਚਰਨ ਆਪਨੇ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
taa te charan aapane ddaariyo |
‘Shiva has shown me the marvel and has given me sanctuary under his feet.
ਅਬ ਚੇਰੋ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਮੈ ਭਯੋ ॥
ab chero taa ko mai bhayo |
ਬਿਸਨ ਜਾਪ ਤਬ ਤੇ ਤਜਿ ਦਯੋ ॥੧੧॥
bisan jaap tab te taj dayo |11|
‘I have become his disciple and I forswear the deliberations of Vishnu for ever.’(11)

ਪਲਕਾ ਪਰ ਤੇ ਰਾਨਿਯਹਿ ਸੋਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਡਾਰਿ ॥
palakaa par te raaniyeh sot nripat ko ddaar |
By toppling over the bed on which Raja was sleeping,
ਸਿਖ︀ਯ ਤੁਰਤੁ ਸਿਵ ਕੋ ਕਿਯੋ ਐਸੋ ਚਰਿਤ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ॥੧੨॥
sikhay turat siv ko kiyo aiso charit sudhaar |12|
Through this manoeuvre, Rani turned Raja into a devotee of Shiva.(12)(1)

Up in the lofty mountains there was one Raja who belonged to Chandrabansi clan.

ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਲਈ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਉਜਿਯਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

Bhaag Mati was his wife, and it seemed she had stolen radiance from the Moon.(1)

It is heard that he had a very big palace and a flag always remained hoisted there.
ਸਾਚ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਸੋ ਜਾਨਿਯੋ ਧੌਲਰ ਲਖ︀ਯੋ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
saach svarag so jaaniyo dhaualar lakhayo na jaae |2|
That splendid palace could not be overlooked and it was an epitome of heaven.(2)

When the Rani saw Deb Datt, she felt as if she had come across a treasure of splendour.
ਪਠੈ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਬੋਲਿ ਸੁ ਲੀਨੋ ॥
patthai sahacharee bol su leeno |
ਕਾਮ ਕੇਲ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਅਤਿ ਕੀਨੋ ॥੩॥
kaam kel taa sau at keeno |3|
She sent her maid and called him over and made love with him.(3)
ਬੀਰਦੇਵ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਵਾ ॥
beeradev raajaa sun paavaa |
ਕੋਊ ਜਾਰ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਆਵਾ ॥
koaoo jaar hamaare aavaa |
When Raja Bir Dev heard that a paramour had come to his place,
ਅਧਿਕ ਕੋਪ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਖੜਗ ਉਚਾਯੋ ॥
adhik kop nrip kharrag uchaayo |
ਪਲਕ ਨ ਬੀਤੀ ਤਹ ਚਲਿ ਆਯੋ ॥੪॥
palak na beetee teh chal aayo |4|
He was enraged, he unsheathed his sword and, instantly, reached the place.(4)
ਭਾਗਵਤੀ ਜਬ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਲਖਿ ਲੀਨੋ ॥
bhaagavatee jab nrip lakh leeno |
ਤਾਹਿ ਚੜਾਇ ਮਹਲ ਪਰ ਦੀਨੋ ॥
taeh charraae mehal par deeno |
When Bhaag Mati saw the Raja, she sent him (the friend) upstairs of the palace.
ਟਰਿ ਆਗੇ ਨਿਜੁ ਪਤਿ ਕੌ ਲਿਯੋ ॥
ttar aage nij pat kau liyo |
ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਕਿਯੋ ॥੫॥
bahut prakaar samaagam kiyo |5|
She went forward, stopped him (the Raja) and invariably intimated with him.(5)

ਰੂੰਈ ਸੌ ਸਾਰੋ ਸਦਨ ਏਕ ਤੁਰਤੁ ਭਰਿ ਲੀਨ ॥
roonee sau saaro sadan ek turat bhar leen |
She had a room completely filled with cotton.
ਆਜ ਚੋਰ ਇਕ ਮੈ ਗਹਿਯੋ ਯੌ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੌ ਕਹਿ ਦੀਨ ॥੬॥
aaj chor ik mai gahiyo yau nrip sau keh deen |6|
She told Raja that she had caught a thief that day.(6)

ਕਹੁ ਤੁ ਤੁਮ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਗਹਿ ਲ︀ਯਾਊ ॥
kahu tu tum taa kau geh layaaoo |
ਆਨਿ ਰਾਵ ਜੂ ਤੁਮੈ ਦਿਖਾਊ ॥
aan raav joo tumai dikhaaoo |
‘If you so desire, please permit me, I will bring him in and show you.
ਜੋ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਹੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੋਊ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
jo muhi kaho taeh soaoo keejai |
ਡਾਰਿ ਮਹਲ ਊਪਰ ਤੇ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
ddaar mehal aoopar te deejai |7|
‘Whatever the way you want me to treat him, I will abide by.’(7)
ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਹਿ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਜਤਾਈ ॥
pratham nripeh ih bhaat jataaee |
ਬਹੁਰੋ ਬਾਧਿ ਜਾਰ ਕੌ ਲ︀ਯਾਈ ॥
bahuro baadh jaar kau layaaee |
After telling Raja like this, she tied him and brought him out,
ਆਪੁ ਭੋਗ ਜਿਹ ਸਾਥ ਕਮਾਯੋ ॥
aap bhog jih saath kamaayo |
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਰਾਵ ਕੌ ਆਨ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ ॥੮॥
bahur raav kau aan dikhaayo |8|
And showed Raja the one with whom she had made love.(8)
ਰਾਨੀ ਹੇਰਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਰਿਸਿ ਭਰੀ ॥
raanee her taeh ris bharee |
ਸਖਿਯਨ ਕੌ ਆਗ︀ਯਾ ਯੌ ਕਰੀ ॥
sakhiyan kau aagayaa yau karee |
Rani looked at him furiously and ordered her maids,
ਧੌਲਰ ਤੇ ਯਾ ਕੌ ਤੁਮ ਡਾਰੋ ॥
dhaualar te yaa kau tum ddaaro |
ਆਇਸੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੋ ਨ ਨਿਹਾਰੋ ॥੯॥
aaeis raajaa ko na nihaaro |9|
‘Throw him down the palace and don’t wait for Raja’s order.(9)
ਵੈ ਸਖਿਆਂ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਲੈ ਗਈ ॥
vai sakhiaan taa kau lai gee |
ਚੀਨਤ ਸਦਨ ਸੁ ਆਗੇ ਭਈ ॥
cheenat sadan su aage bhee |
The maids took him away. They knew about the room with cotton.
ਸਕਲ ਰਾਵ ਕੋ ਸੋਕ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
sakal raav ko sok nivaariyo |
ਰੂੰਈ ਪੈ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਗਹਿ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੦॥
roonee pai taa kau geh ddaariyo |10|
They eliminated Raja’s affliction and threw him in the room with cotton.(10)
ਰਾਜੈ ਲਖੀ ਦੁਸਟ ਇਹ ਘਾਯੋ ॥
raajai lakhee dusatt ih ghaayo |
ਤਿਨ ਤਨਿ ਤਨਿਕ ਖੇਦ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
tin tan tanik khed neh paayo |
The Raja thought, the culprit had been finished, and his distress was thus eradicated.
ਉਠਿ ਤਹ ਤੇ ਨਿਜੁ ਧਾਮ ਸਿਧਾਯੋ ॥
autth teh te nij dhaam sidhaayo |
ਇਹ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਿਜੁ ਜਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਯੋ ॥੧੧॥
eih charitr nij jaar langhaayo |11|
He got up, went away to his own palace, and the woman, through this trickery, saved the friend.(11)
ਪੁਨਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
pun raaje ih bhaat uchaariyo |
ਇਹ ਜੋ ਚੋਰ ਧਾਮ ਤੇ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
eih jo chor dhaam te ddaariyo |
Then Raja ordered, ‘The thief which was thrown down the palace,
ਮੋਹਿ ਆਨ ਵਹੁ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਦਿਖੈਯੈ ॥
mohi aan vahu mritak dikhaiyai |
ਆਗ︀ਯਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਾਨਿ ਯਹ ਲੈਯੈ ॥੧੨॥
aagayaa mohi maan yeh laiyai |12|
‘His deact-oody should be brought and shown to me.’(12)
ਜੋ ਨਰ ਹ︀ਯਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਬਗਾਈ ॥
jo nar hayaan te milai bagaaee |
ਟੂਕ ਟੂਕ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ਸੋ ਜਾਈ ॥
ttook ttook hvai kai so jaaee |
‘Any person who is thrown from such a height, must be torn into pieces.
ਤਿਲ ਤਿਲ ਭਯੋ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
til til bhayo drisatt neh aavai |
ਤਾ ਕੌ ਕੌਨ ਖੋਜ ਕਰ ਲ︀ਯਾਵੈ ॥੧੩॥
taa kau kauan khoj kar layaavai |13|
‘He is not visible, who could find him?(13)
ਤਿਲ ਤਿਲ ਪਾਇ ਅੰਗ ਤਿਹ ਭਏ ॥
til til paae ang tih bhe |
ਗੀਧ ਕਾਕ ਆਮਿਖ ਭਖਿ ਗਏ ॥
geedh kaak aamikh bhakh ge |
‘His bones must have been minced along with the fle9’h and that flesh must have been eaten by the eagles.
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਅੰਗ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
taa ko ang drisatt neh aavai |
ਕੌਨ ਬਿਯੋ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਲੈ ਆਵੈ ॥੧੪॥
kauan biyo taa kau lai aavai |14|
‘Not a single piece of his body is visible, who and where one can find him?’(l4)
