ਕੈਧੌ ਜੂਝਿ ਖੇਤ ਮੈ ਮਰਿਯੋ ॥

ਕੈਧੌ ਤ੍ਰਸਤ ਦਰੀ ਮਹਿ ਦੁਰਿਯੋ ॥
kaidhau trasat daree meh duriyo |
‘Either he has been killed in the war or, being scared, has gone under hiding.
ਭਜਿਯੋ ਜੁਧ ਤੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਲਜਾਯੋ ॥
bhajiyo judh te adhik lajaayo |
ਅਤਿਥ ਗਯੋ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਧਾਮ ਨ ਆਯੋ ॥੪॥
atith gayo hvai dhaam na aayo |4|
‘Either, being ashamed of himself, he has run away from the fight or has become an ascetIc an gone mto a cave.’ (4)

Shukracharj suggested, ‘Now we should contemplate,
ਰਾਜ ਜੁਜਾਤਹਿ ਦੀਜਿਯੈ ਯਹੈ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਕੋ ਸਾਰ ॥੫॥
raaj jujaateh deejiyai yahai mantr ko saar |5|
‘And handover the dominion to Jujati.’(5)

ਤ੍ਰਿਦਸ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਸਕਲ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਏ ॥

ਇੰਦ੍ਰਤੁ ਦੇਤ ਜੁਜਤਹਿ ਭਏ ॥
eindrat det jujateh bhe |
Then all the gods got together and handed over Indra’s sovereignty to Jujati.
ਜਬ ਤਿਨ ਰਾਜ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਮੋ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
jab tin raaj indr mo paayo |
ਰੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰ ਸਚੀ ਲਲਚਾਯੋ ॥੬॥
roop nihaar sachee lalachaayo |6|
After getting the rule of Indra, when he noticed the beauty of Sachee (Indra’s consort), he was enticed.(6)
ਕਹਿਯੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਚੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
kahiyo taeh sun sachee piaaree |
ਅਬ ਹੋਵਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
ab hovahu tum triyaa hamaaree |
Be said, ‘Listen, my dear Sachee, now you, rather, become my consort.
ਖੋਜਤ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਹਾਥ ਨਹਿ ਐਹੈ ॥
khojat indr haath neh aihai |
ਤਾ ਕਹ ਖੋਜਿ ਕਹੂੰ ਕਾ ਕੈਹੈ ॥੭॥
taa keh khoj kahoon kaa kaihai |7|
‘By searching he will not be found, then why waste the time.’(7)
ਰੋਇ ਸਚੀ ਯੌ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥
roe sachee yau bachan uchaaro |
ਗਯੋ ਏਸ ਪਰਦੇਸ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥
gayo es parades hamaaro |
Crying, Sachee said, ‘My master is gone abroad.
ਜੇ ਹਮਰੇ ਸਤ ਕੌ ਤੂੰ ਟਰਿ ਹੈਂ ॥
je hamare sat kau toon ttar hain |
ਮਹਾ ਨਰਕ ਕੇ ਭੀਤਰ ਪਰਿ ਹੈਂ ॥੮॥
mahaa narak ke bheetar par hain |8|
‘If you infringe my truthfulness, it will tantamount to a great sin.’(8)
ਯਹ ਪਾਪੀ ਤਜਿ ਹੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
yeh paapee taj hai muhi naahee |
ਬਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਹਮਰੋ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
bahu chintaa hamaro man maahee |
(She thought) ‘It is very distressful that this sinner will not let me alone now.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕਛੂ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਚਰਿਯੈ ॥
taa te kachhoo charitr bichariyai |
ਯਾ ਕੌ ਦੂਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਤੇ ਕਰਿਯੈ ॥੯॥
yaa kau door raaj te kariyai |9|
‘Some trick must be played so that he is kept away from reigning.’(9)

ਏਕ ਪ੍ਰਤਗ੍ਰਯਾ ਮੈ ਕਰੀ ਜੌ ਤੁਮ ਕਰੌ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
ek pratagrayaa mai karee jau tum karau banaae |
(She said to him) ‘I have taken one vow, if you can fulfil it,
ਤੌ ਹਮ ਕੌ ਬ੍ਰਯਾਹੋ ਅਬੈ ਲੈ ਘਰ ਜਾਹੁ ਸੁਹਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
tau ham kau brayaaho abai lai ghar jaahu suhaae |10|
‘Then, you can get marry and take me home.’(10)

ਸ੍ਵਾਰੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਾਲਕੀ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
svaaree aap paalakee keejai |
ਰਿਖਿਯਨ ਕੌ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਤਰ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
rikhiyan kau taa ke tar deejai |
‘You, yourself, ascend in a palanquin, and ask the sages to act as bearers and pick it up.
ਅਧਿਕ ਧਵਾਵਤ ਤਿਨ ਹ︀ਯਾਂ ਐਯੈ ॥
adhik dhavaavat tin hayaan aiyai |
ਤਬ ਮੁਹਿ ਹਾਥ ਆਜੁ ਹੀ ਪੈਯੈ ॥੧੧॥
tab muhi haath aaj hee paiyai |11|
‘Running fast reach here and hold my hand in marriage.’(11)
ਤਬੈ ਪਾਲਕੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਮੰਗਾਯੋ ॥
tabai paalakee taeh mangaayo |
ਮੁਨਿਯਨ ਕੋ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਤਰ ਲਾਯੋ ॥
muniyan ko taa ke tar laayo |
Immediately he arranged a palanquin and asked the sages to haul it.
ਜ︀ਯੋ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਸ੍ਰਮਤ ਅਸਿਤ ਮਨ ਧਰਹੀ ॥
jayo hvai sramat asit man dharahee |
ਤ੍ਰਯੋ ਤ੍ਰਯੋ ਕਠਿਨ ਕੋਰਰੇ ਪਰਹੀ ॥੧੨॥
trayo trayo katthin korare parahee |12|
When the sages got tired, he hit them with the whip.(12)

ਏਕ ਉਦਾਲਕ ਰਿਖਿ ਹੁਤੋ ਦਿਯੋ ਸ੍ਰਾਪ ਰਿਸਿ ਠਾਨਿ ॥
ek udaalak rikh huto diyo sraap ris tthaan |
The sage named Udhalik pronounced a curse on him,
ਤਬ ਤੇ ਗਿਰਿਯੋ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਤੁ ਤੇ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਿਥੀ ਪਰ ਆਨ ॥੧੩॥
tab te giriyo indrat te pariyo prithee par aan |13|
Through which he was dethroned from Indra’s domain and thrown on the earth.

ਇਸੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੌਨ ਕੋ ਟਾਰਿਯੋ ॥

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਕੋ ਜਾਇ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
bahur indr ko jaae nihaariyo |
Through such a trick she averted the situation and then went round and found Indra.
ਤਹ ਤੇ ਆਨਿ ਰਾਜੁ ਤਿਹ ਦਯੋ ॥
teh te aan raaj tih dayo |
ਸੁਰ ਪੁਰ ਬਹੁਰ ਬਧਾਵੋ ਭਯੋ ॥੧੪॥
sur pur bahur badhaavo bhayo |14|
He took over the sovereignty, once again, and the greetings flowed in the heaven.

santahu tahaa niranjan raam hai |
O Saints, the Immaculate Lord dwells there;
ਗੁਰ ਗਮਿ ਚੀਨੈ ਬਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਇ ॥
gur gam cheenai biralaa koe |
how rare are those who go to the Guru, and understand this.
ਤਹਾਂ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਰਮਈਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The all-pervading immaculate Lord is there. ||1||Pause||
ਦੇਵ ਸਥਾਨੈ ਕਿਆ ਨੀਸਾਣੀ ॥

What is the insignia of the Divine Lord's dwelling?
ਤਹ ਬਾਜੇ ਸਬਦ ਅਨਾਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
teh baaje sabad anaahad baanee |
The unstruck sound current of the Shabad vibrates there.
ਤਹ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਪਉਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
teh chand na sooraj paun na paanee |
There is no moon or sun, no air or water there.
ਸਾਖੀ ਜਾਗੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
saakhee jaagee guramukh jaanee |2|
The Gurmukh becomes aware, and knows the Teachings. ||2||
ਉਪਜੈ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
aupajai giaan duramat chheejai |
Spiritual wisdom wells up, and evil-mindedness departs;
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਿ ਗਗਨੰਤਰਿ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
amrit ras gaganantar bheejai |
the nucleus of the mind sky is drenched with Ambrosial Nectar.
ਏਸੁ ਕਲਾ ਜੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਭੇਉ ॥
es kalaa jo jaanai bheo |
One who knows the secret of this device,
ਭੇਟੈ ਤਾਸੁ ਪਰਮ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ॥੩॥
bhettai taas param guradeo |3|
meets the Supreme Divine Guru. ||3||
ਦਸਮ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਪਰਮ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਘਾਟੀ ॥
dasam duaaraa agam apaaraa param purakh kee ghaattee |
The Tenth Gate is the home of the inaccessible, infinite Supreme Lord.
ਊਪਰਿ ਹਾਟੁ ਹਾਟ ਪਰਿ ਆਲਾ ਆਲੇ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਥਾਤੀ ॥੪॥
aoopar haatt haatt par aalaa aale bheetar thaatee |4|
Above the store is a niche, and within this niche is the commodity. ||4||
ਜਾਗਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਸੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਸੋਵੈ ॥
jaagat rahai su kabahu na sovai |
One who remains awake, never sleeps.
ਤੀਨਿ ਤਿਲੋਕ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਪਲੋਵੈ ॥
teen tilok samaadh palovai |
The three qualities and the three worlds vanish, in the state of Samaadhi.
ਬੀਜ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਲੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਹੈ ॥
beej mantru lai hiradai rahai |
He takes the Beej Mantra, the Seed Mantra, and keeps it in his heart.
ਮਨੂਆ ਉਲਟਿ ਸੁੰਨ ਮਹਿ ਗਹੈ ॥੫॥
manooaa ulatt sun meh gahai |5|
Turning his mind away from the world, he focuses on the cosmic void of the absolute Lord. ||5||
ਜਾਗਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਅਲੀਆ ਭਾਖੈ ॥
jaagat rahai na aleea bhaakhai |
He remains awake, and he does not lie.
ਪਾਚਉ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਬਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
paachau indree bas kar raakhai |
He keeps the five sensory organs under his control.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਖੀ ਰਾਖੈ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
gur kee saakhee raakhai cheet |
He cherishes in his consciousness the Guru's Teachings.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪੈ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੬॥
man tan arapai krisan pareet |6|
He dedicates his mind and body to the Lord's Love. ||6||
ਕਰ ਪਲਵ ਸਾਖਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
kar palav saakhaa beechaare |
He considers his hands to be the leaves and branches of the tree.
ਅਪਨਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਜੂਐ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
apanaa janam na jooai haare |
He does not lose his life in the gamble.
ਅਸੁਰ ਨਦੀ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੈ ਮੂਲੁ ॥
asur nadee kaa bandhai mool |
He plugs up the source of the river of evil tendencies.
ਪਛਿਮ ਫੇਰਿ ਚੜਾਵੈ ਸੂਰੁ ॥
pachhim fer charraavai soor |
Turning away from the west, he makes the sun rise in the east.
ਅਜਰੁ ਜਰੈ ਸੁ ਨਿਝਰੁ ਝਰੈ ॥
ajar jarai su nijhar jharai |
He bears the unbearable, and the drops trickle down within;
ਜਗੰਨਾਥ ਸਿਉ ਗੋਸਟਿ ਕਰੈ ॥੭॥
jaganaath siau gosatt karai |7|
then, he speaks with the Lord of the world. ||7||
ਚਉਮੁਖ ਦੀਵਾ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
chaumukh deevaa jot duaar |
The four-sided lamp illuminates the Tenth Gate.
ਪਲੂ ਅਨਤ ਮੂਲੁ ਬਿਚਕਾਰਿ ॥
paloo anat mool bichakaar |
The Primal Lord is at the center of the countless leaves.
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਲੇ ਆਪੇ ਰਹੈ ॥
sarab kalaa le aape rahai |
He Himself abides there with all His powers.
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਣਕੁ ਰਤਨਾ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਹੈ ॥੮॥
man maanak ratanaa meh guhai |8|
He weaves the jewels into the pearl of the mind. ||8||
ਮਸਤਕਿ ਪਦਮੁ ਦੁਆਲੈ ਮਣੀ ॥
masatak padam duaalai manee |
The lotus is at the forehead, and the jewels surround it.
ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਧਣੀ ॥
maeh niranjan tribhavan dhanee |
Within it is the Immaculate Lord, the Master of the three worlds.
ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਨਿਰਮਾਇਲ ਬਾਜੇ ॥
panch sabad niramaaeil baaje |
The Panch Shabad, the five primal sounds, resound and vibrate their in their purity.
ਢੁਲਕੇ ਚਵਰ ਸੰਖ ਘਨ ਗਾਜੇ ॥
dtulake chavar sankh ghan gaaje |
The chauris - the fly brushes wave, and the conch shells blare like thunder.
ਦਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਦੈਤਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
dal mal daitahu guramukh giaan |
The Gurmukh tramples the demons underfoot with his spiritual wisdom.
