ਪਛਿਮ ਦੇਵ ਰਾਵ ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ॥
pachhim dev raav baddabhaagee |
ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਾ ਰਾਨੀ ਸੌ ਪਾਗੀ ॥
mantr kalaa raanee sau paagee |
In the West Country there lived an auspicious king named Dev Raao. Mantar Kala was his wife.
ਜੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਹੈ ਵਹੈ ਜੜ ਕਰਈ ॥
jo triy kahai vahai jarr karee |
ਬਿਨੁ ਪੂਛੈ ਕਛੁ ਤਿਹ ਨ ਨੁਸਰਈ ॥੧॥
bin poochhai kachh tih na nusaree |1|
The way the woman directed, that fool followed and without her consent would not take a single step.(1)
ਤਾ ਪਰ ਰਹਤ ਰਾਵ ਉਰਝਾਯੋ ॥
taa par rehat raav urajhaayo |
ਦੋਇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਾਯੋ ॥
doe putr taa te upajaayo |
She always ensnared the Raja; they had two sons.
ਕਾਲ ਪਾਇ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਰਿ ਗਯੋ ॥
kaal paae raajaa mar gayo |
ਰਾਜ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕੋ ਭਯੋ ॥੨॥
raaj putr taa ke ko bhayo |2|
After sometimes the Raja died and his sons took over the kingdom.(2)

ਏਕ ਪੁਰਖ ਆਯੋ ਤਹਾ ਅਮਿਤ ਰੂਪ ਕੀ ਖਾਨਿ ॥

Once, a man came, who was very handsome.
ਲਖਿ ਰਾਨੀ ਤਿਹ ਬਸਿ ਭਈ ਬਧੀ ਬਿਰਹ ਕੈ ਬਾਨ ॥੩॥
lakh raanee tih bas bhee badhee birah kai baan |3|
Becoming the victim of his love-arrows, Rani felt herself under his spell.(3)

ਤਾ ਕੌ ਲਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਪਠੈ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਏਕ ਤਿਹ ॥

Through one of her maids, she called him over,
ਕਹਿਯੋ ਬਿਰਾਜਹੁ ਆਇ ਸੰਕ ਤ︀ਯਾਗ ਹਮ ਕੌ ਅਬੈ ॥੪॥
kahiyo biraajahu aae sank tayaag ham kau abai |4|
And told him to stay their without any trepidation.(4)

ਤਬ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਤਿਨ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
tab sundar tin hridai bichaariyo |
ਰਾਨੀ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
raanee ke prat pragatt uchaariyo |
Then, that handsome man thought and spoke to the Rani emphatically,
ਏਕ ਬਾਤ ਤੁਮ ਕਰੋ ਤਾ ਕਹਊ ॥
ek baat tum karo taa khaoo |
ਨਾਤਰ ਧਾਮ ਨ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਰਹਊ ॥੫॥
naatar dhaam na tumare rhaoo |5|
‘I must ask you one thing, I will stay if you agree, and otherwise I will leave.’(5)
ਸੁ ਹੌ ਕਹੌ ਜੋ ਯਹ ਨਹਿ ਕਰੈ ॥
su hau kahau jo yeh neh karai |
ਮੋਰ ਮਿਲਨ ਕੋ ਖ︀ਯਾਲ ਨ ਪਰੈ ॥
mor milan ko khayaal na parai |
(He thought) ‘I must say something which she cannot do and abandon thought of meeting me.
ਦੁਹਕਰ ਕਰਮ ਜੁ ਯਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
duhakar karam ju yeh triy kar hai |
ਤਬ ਯਹ ਆਜੁ ਸੁ ਹਮ ਕੋ ਬਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
tab yeh aaj su ham ko bar hai |6|
‘Or else she will be too firm and will definitely marry me.’(6)

ਏ ਜੂ ਪੂਤ ਜੁਗ ਤੁਮ ਜਨੇ ਤਿਨ ਦੁਹੂਅਨ ਕੋ ਮਾਰਿ ॥

‘These two sons which you have given birth to, kill them both,
ਗੋਦ ਡਾਰਿ ਸਿਰ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਕੇ ਮਾਗਹੁ ਭੀਖ ਬਜਾਰ ॥੭॥
god ddaar sir duhoon ke maagahu bheekh bajaar |7|
‘And placing their heads in your lap, go out to beg alms.’ (7)

The woman decided to undertake the task and called both her sons.
ਮਦਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਇ ਕੀਏ ਮਤਵਾਰੇ ॥
madaraa prayaae kee matavaare |
ਖੜਗ ਕਾਢਿ ਦੋਊ ਪੂਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥੮॥
kharrag kaadt doaoo poot sanghaare |8|
She intoxicated them with wine and with a sword killed them both.(8)

ਦੁਹੂੰ ਸੁਤਨ ਕੇ ਕਾਟ ਸਿਰ ਲਏ ਗੋਦ ਮੈ ਡਾਰਿ ॥

She cut of and put the heads of both of them in her lap.
ਅਤਿਥ ਭੇਖ ਕੋ ਧਾਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਗੀ ਭੀਖ ਬਜਾਰ ॥੯॥
atith bhekh ko dhaar kar maagee bheekh bajaar |9|
Putting up the disguise of a beggar, she went out for begging.(9)

ਭੀਖ ਮਾਗਿ ਮਿਤਵਾ ਪਹਿ ਗਈ ॥

ਪੂਤਨ ਮੁੰਡ ਦਿਖਾਵਤ ਭਈ ॥
pootan mundd dikhaavat bhee |
After begging, she went to her lover and showed him the heads of her sons.
ਤੋਰੇ ਲੀਏ ਦੋਊ ਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
tore lee doaoo mai maare |
ਅਬ ਭੋਗਹੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਆਨਿ ਪਿਯਾਰੇ ॥੧੦॥
ab bhogahu muhi aan piyaare |10|
‘I have killed my both the sons. Now you come and make love with me.’(10)
ਦੁਹਕਰ ਕਰਮ ਜਾਰਿ ਲਖਿ ਲਯੋ ॥
duhakar karam jaar lakh layo |
ਪਹਰ ਏਕ ਮਿਰਤਕ ਸੌ ਭਯੋ ॥
pehar ek miratak sau bhayo |
An uphill task he faced, and for one whole watch he felt like a dead man.
ਦੁਤਿਯ ਪਹਰ ਆਨਿ ਜਬ ਲਾਗਿਯੋ ॥
dutiy pehar aan jab laagiyo |
ਚਿਤ੍ਰਯੋ ਛੋਰਿ ਮੂਰਛਨਾ ਜਾਗਿਯੋ ॥੧੧॥
chitrayo chhor moorachhanaa jaagiyo |11|
When the second watch approached, he regained the consciousness.( 11)

ਤਜਿਹੂੰ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਰਮਿਹੂੰ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੀ ਆਨਿ ਬਨੀ ਦੁਚਿਤਾਈ ॥
tajihoon na sakai ramihoon na sakai ih bhaat kee aan banee duchitaaee |
(And contemplated,) ‘Neither I can accept her, nor can I leave, I am in a fix now.
ਬੈਠ ਸਕੈ ਉਠਿਹੂੰ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕਹਿਹੂੰ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕਛੁ ਬਾਤ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
baitth sakai utthihoon na sakai kahihoon na sakai kachh baat banaaee |
‘Neither, I can sit nor get up, such a situation has arisen.
ਤ︀ਯਾਗਿ ਸਕੈ ਗਰ ਲਾਗਿ ਸਕੈ ਰਸ ਪਾਗਿ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਇਹੈ ਠਹਰਾਈ ॥
tayaag sakai gar laag sakai ras paag sakai na ihai tthaharaaee |
‘Neither I can abandon her, nor I can relish her in such a condition.
ਝੂਲਿ ਗਿਰਿਯੋ ਛਿਤ ਭੁਲ ਗਈ ਸੁਧਿ ਕਾ ਗਤਿ ਮੋਰੇ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸ ਬਨਾਈ ॥੧੨॥
jhool giriyo chhit bhul gee sudh kaa gat more bisvaas banaaee |12|
‘I have been downed to doom and all my perceptibility has abandoned me.’

ik oankaar sat naam karataa purakh nirbhau niravair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhan gur prasaad |
One Universal Creator God. Truth Is The Name. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying. Beyond Birth. Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace:
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਜਪਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰੇ ॥
mere man jap ahinis naam hare |
O my mind, chant the Name of the Lord, day and night.
ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਦੋਖ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੇ ਸਭ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਪਾਸਿ ਧਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kott kott dokh bahu keene sabh parahar paas dhare |1| rahaau |
Millions and millions of sins and mistakes, committed through countless lifetimes, shall all be put aside and sent away. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹਿ ਆਰਾਧਹਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਭਾਇ ਖਰੇ ॥
har har naam japeh aaraadheh sevak bhaae khare |
Those who chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and worship Him in adoration, and serve Him with love, are genuine.
ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦੋਖ ਗਏ ਸਭ ਨੀਕਰਿ ਜਿਉ ਪਾਨੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥
kilabikh dokh ge sabh neekar jiau paanee mail hare |1|
All their sins are erased, just as water washes off the dirt. ||1||
ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਨਰੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਨੁ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਨਰ ਨਰਹਰੇ ॥
khin khin nar naaraaein gaaveh mukh boleh nar narahare |
That being, who sings the Lord's Praises each and every instant, chants with his mouth the Name of the Lord.
ਪੰਚ ਦੋਖ ਅਸਾਧ ਨਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੨॥
panch dokh asaadh nagar meh ik khin pal door kare |2|
In a moment, in an instant, the Lord rids him of the five incurable diseases of the body-village. ||2||
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਭਗਤ ਹਰੇ ॥
vaddabhaagee har naam dhiaaveh har ke bhagat hare |
Very fortunate are those who meditate on the Lord's Name; they alone are the Lord's devotees.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਚਉ ਮੈ ਮੂੜ ਮੁਗਧ ਨਿਸਤਰੇ ॥੩॥
tin kee sangat dehi prabh jaachau mai moorr mugadh nisatare |3|
I beg for the Sangat, the Congregation; O God, please bless me with them. I am a fool, and an idiot - please save me! ||3||
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰੇ ॥
kripaa kripaa dhaar jagajeevan rakh levahu saran pare |
Shower me with Your Mercy and Grace, O Life of the World; save me, I seek Your Sanctuary.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਨੁ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਸਰਨਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਲਾਜ ਹਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak jan tumaree saranaaee har raakhahu laaj hare |4|1|
Servant Nanak has entered Your Sanctuary; O Lord, please preserve my honor! ||4||1||

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਓ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਧਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਲੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam naam japio gur bachanee har dhaaree har kripale |1| rahaau |
Chanting the Lord's Name, following the Guru's Teachings, the Lord showers His Mercy upon them. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜਨ ਜਪਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਲਲ ਸਲਲੇ ॥
har har agam agochar suaamee jan jap mil salal salale |
Our Lord and Master, Har, Har, is inaccessible and unfathomable. Meditating on Him, His humble servant merges with Him, like water with water.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਮ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਲੇ ॥੧॥
har ke sant mil raam ras paaeaa ham jan kai bal balale |1|
Meeting with the Lord's Saints, I have obtained the sublime essence of the Lord. I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to His humble servants. ||1||
ਪੁਰਖੋਤਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨਿ ਗਾਇਓ ਸਭਿ ਦਾਲਦ ਦੁਖ ਦਲਲੇ ॥
purakhotam har naam jan gaaeo sabh daalad dukh dalale |
The Lord's humble servant sings the Praises of the Name of the Supreme, Primal Soul, and all poverty and pain are destroyed.
ਵਿਚਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੋਖ ਅਸਾਧ ਪੰਚ ਧਾਤੂ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਏ ਖਿਨ ਪਰਲੇ ॥੨॥
vich dehee dokh asaadh panch dhaatoo har kee khin parale |2|
Within the body are the five evil and uncontrollable passions. The Lord destroys them in an instant. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ਜਿਉ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਸਿ ਕਮਲੇ ॥
har ke sant man preet lagaaee jiau dekhai sas kamale |
The Lord's Saint loves the Lord in his mind, like the lotus flower gazing at the moon.
ਉਨਵੈ ਘਨੁ ਘਨ ਘਨਿਹਰੁ ਗਰਜੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਮੋਰ ਮੁਰਲੇ ॥੩॥
aunavai ghan ghan ghanihar garajai man bigasai mor murale |3|
The clouds hang low, the clouds tremble with thunder, and the mind dances joyfully like the peacock. ||3||
ਹਮਰੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਲੋਚ ਹਮ ਲਾਈ ਹਮ ਜੀਵਹ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ॥
hamarai suaamee loch ham laaee ham jeevah dekh har mile |
My Lord and Master has placed this yearning within me; I live by seeing and meeting my Lord.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਅਮਲ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਅਨਦ ਭਲੇ ॥੪॥੨॥
jan naanak har amal har laae har melahu anad bhale |4|2|
Servant Nanak is addicted to the intoxication of the Lord; meeting with the Lord, he finds sublime bliss. ||4||2||

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖੇ ॥
mere man jap har har naam sakhe |
O my mind, chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, your only Friend.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਹਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਪਖੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parasaadee har naam dhiaaeo ham satigur charan pakhe |1| rahaau |
By Guru's Grace, I meditate on the Name of the Lord; I wash the Feet of the True Guru. ||1||Pause||
ਊਤਮ ਜਗੰਨਾਥ ਜਗਦੀਸੁਰ ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਰਖੇ ॥
aootam jaganaath jagadeesur ham paapee saran rakhe |
The Exalted Lord of the World, the Master of the Universe, keeps a sinner like me in His Sanctuary
ਤੁਮ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਓ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਖੇ ॥੧॥
tum vadd purakh deen dukh bhanjan har deeo naam mukhe |1|
You are the Greatest Being, Lord, Destroyer of the pains of the meek; You have placed Your Name in my mouth, Lord. ||1||
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਹਮ ਗਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਖੇ ॥
har gun aooch neech ham gaae gur satigur sang sakhe |
I am lowly, but I sing the Lofty Praises of the Lord, meeting with the Guru, the True Guru, my Friend.
ਜਿਉ ਚੰਦਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਸੈ ਨਿੰਮੁ ਬਿਰਖਾ ਗੁਨ ਚੰਦਨ ਕੇ ਬਸਖੇ ॥੨॥
jiau chandan sang basai ninm birakhaa gun chandan ke basakhe |2|
Like the bitter nimm tree, growing near the sandalwood tree, I am permeated with the fragrance of sandalwood. ||2||
ਹਮਰੇ ਅਵਗਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਿਖੈ ਕੇ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਨਿਮਖੇ ॥
hamare avagan bikhiaa bikhai ke bahu baar baar nimakhe |
My faults and sins of corruption are countless; over and over again, I commit them.
ਅਵਗਨਿਆਰੇ ਪਾਥਰ ਭਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਨਖੇ ॥੩॥
avaganiaare paathar bhaare har taare sang janakhe |3|
I am unworthy, I am a heavy stone sinking down; but the Lord has carried me across, in association with His humble servants. ||3||
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਤੁਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਭ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਕ੍ਰਿਖੇ ॥
jin kau tum har raakhahu suaamee sabh tin ke paap krikhe |
Those whom You save, Lord - all their sins are destroyed.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਦਇਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੁਮ ਦੁਸਟ ਤਾਰੇ ਹਰਣਖੇ ॥੪॥੩॥
jan naanak ke deaal prabh suaamee tum dusatt taare haranakhe |4|3|
O Merciful God, Lord and Master of servant Nanak, You have carried across even evil villains like Harnaakhash. ||4||3||
