ਏਤੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁ ਯਾ ਪੈ ਭਈ ॥

ਅਬ ਕਥ ਚਲਿ ਤਿਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਪੈ ਗਈ ॥
ab kath chal tih triy pai gee |
This is what happened this side. Now we talk about the other woman
ਨਿਜੁ ਪਤਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਜਿਨ ਲਯੋ ॥
nij pat maar raaj jin layo |
ਲੈ ਸੁ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਨਿਜੁ ਸੁਤ ਸਿਰ ਦਯੋ ॥੨੨॥
lai su chhatru nij sut sir dayo |22|
(Rani), Who had killed her husband.and achieved the sovereignty for his son.(22)
ਮੁਖੁ ਫੀਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਸਭਨ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥
mukh feeko kar sabhan dikhaavai |
ਚਿਤ ਅਪਨੇ ਮੈ ਮੋਦ ਬਢਾਵੈ ॥
chit apane mai mod badtaavai |
To everyone she put up a sordid face but, internally, in her mind she was gratified,
ਸੋ ਪੁੰਨੂ ਨਿਜੁ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਟਾਰੋ ॥
so punoo nij sir te ttaaro |
ਰਾਜ ਕਮੈਹੈ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥੨੩॥
raaj kamaihai putr hamaaro |23|
As she had gotten rid of Punnu and placed her son on the throne.(23)

ਸਵਤਿ ਸਾਲ ਤੇ ਮੈ ਜਰੀ ਨਿਜੁ ਪਤਿ ਦਯੋ ਸੰਘਾਰ ॥

‘As I was deeply distressed by my co-wife, I got my husband assassinated.
ਬਿਧਵਾ ਹੀ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਜੀਵਿ ਹੌ ਜੌ ਰਾਖੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੨੪॥
bidhavaa hee hvai jeev hau jau raakhe karataar |24|
‘Now I will go on enjoying living on the same tradition with the will of God.’(24)

ਸਵਤਿ ਸਾਲ ਸਿਰ ਪੈ ਤਹਿ ਸਹਿਯੈ ॥

ਬਿਧਵਾ ਹੀ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ਜਗ ਰਹਿਯੈ ॥
bidhavaa hee hvai kai jag rahiyai |
‘The co-wife is no longer on by head, remaining widow I will carry on with my life,
ਧਨ ਕੋ ਟੋਟਿ ਕਛੂ ਮੁਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
dhan ko ttott kachhoo muhi naahee |
ਐਸੇ ਕਹੈ ਅਬਲਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੨੫॥
aise kahai abalaa man maahee |25|
‘As I have no dearth of wealth,’ and this way the destitute kept on planning,(25)

ਮਨ ਭਾਵਤ ਕੋ ਭੋਗ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਨ ਦੇਤੋ ਰਾਇ ॥

‘Raja never let me have the enjoyment of sex to the satisfaction of my mind.
ਅਬਿ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਜਿਹ ਚਾਹਿ ਹੋ ਲੈਹੋ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥੨੬॥
ab chit mai jih chaeh ho laiho nikatt bulaae |26|
‘Now forwhom-so-ever my mind aspired, I will invite to come to me.’(26)

ਬੈਠਿ ਝਰੋਖੇ ਮੁਜਰਾ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
baitth jharokhe mujaraa levai |
ਜਿਹ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਧਨੁ ਦੇਵੈ ॥
jih bhaavai taa ko dhan devai |
She would sit down in the balcony to watch the dance and shower wealth indiscriminately.
ਰਾਜ ਕਾਜ ਕਛੁ ਬਾਲ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
raaj kaaj kachh baal na paavai |
ਖੇਲ ਬਿਖੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥੨੭॥
khel bikhai din rain gavaavai |27|
She would not attend to the affairs of state and spent all her time in pleasantries.(27)
ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਤਿਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਯੌ ਕੀਯੋ ॥
ek divas tin triy yau keeyo |
ਬੈਠਿ ਝਰੋਖੇ ਮੁਜਰਾ ਲੀਯੋ ॥
baitth jharokhe mujaraa leeyo |
One day as she was watching the dance, she invited all the heroes.
ਸਭ ਸੂਰਨ ਕੋ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥
sabh sooran ko bol patthaayo |
ਯਹ ਸੁਨਿ ਭੇਵ ਉਰਬਸੀ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੨੮॥
yeh sun bhev urabasee paayo |28|
Hearing the news, Urvassi came there, too.(28)
ਭੂਖਨ ਵਹੈ ਅੰਗ ਤਿਨ ਧਰੇ ॥
bhookhan vahai ang tin dhare |
ਨਿਜੁ ਆਲੈ ਤੈ ਨਿਕਸਨਿ ਕਰੇ ॥
nij aalai tai nikasan kare |
She wore the same ornaments, by taking them out ofthe alcove.
ਮੁਸਕੀ ਤਾਜੀ ਚੜੀ ਬਿਰਾਜੈ ॥
musakee taajee charree biraajai |
ਨਿਸ ਕੋ ਮਨੋ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਲਾਜੈ ॥੨੯॥
nis ko mano chandramaa laajai |29|
She marched forward moun ting her black horse and made, even, the Moon look modest.(29)

ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਛੁਟੇ ਕਚ ਕਾਧਨ ਊਪਰਿ ਸੋਭਿਤ ਹੈ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਘੁੰਘਰਾਰੇ ॥
sayaam chhutte kach kaadhan aoopar sobhit hai at hee ghungharaare |
ਹਾਰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਦਿਪੈ ਅਤਿ ਚਾਰੁ ਸੁ ਮੋ ਪਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਹਿ ਜਾਤ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥
haar singaar dipai at chaar su mo peh te neh jaat uchaare |
ਰੀਝਤ ਦੇਵ ਅਦੇਵ ਸਭੈ ਸੁ ਕਹਾ ਬਪੁਰੇ ਨਰ ਦੇਵ ਬਿਚਾਰੇ ॥
reejhat dev adev sabhai su kahaa bapure nar dev bichaare |
ਬਾਲ ਕੌ ਰੋਕ ਸਭੈ ਤਜਿ ਸੋਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਕ ਕੋ ਲੋਕ ਬਿਲੋਕਿਤ ਸਾਰੇ ॥੩੦॥
baal kau rok sabhai taj sok trilok ko lok bilokit saare |30|
ਹਾਰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਨਾਇ ਕੈ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਅੰਜਨ ਆਖਿਨ ਆਂਜਿ ਦੀਯੋ ॥
haar singaar banaae kai sundar anjan aakhin aanj deeyo |
ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਤਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਨੂਪ ਧਰੇ ਜਨ ਕੰਦ੍ਰਪ ਕੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਪ ਕੀਯੋ ॥
at hee tan basatr anoop dhare jan kandrap ko bin drap keeyo |
ਕਲਗੀ ਗਜਗਾਹ ਬਨੀ ਘੁੰਘਰਾਰ ਚੜੀ ਹਯ ਕੈ ਹੁਲਸਾਤ ਹੀਯੋ ॥
kalagee gajagaah banee ghungharaar charree hay kai hulasaat heeyo |
ਬਿਨੁ ਦਾਮਨ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਕਾਮਨਿ ਯੌ ਸਭ ਭਾਮਿਨਿ ਕੋ ਮਨ ਮੋਲ ਲੀਯੋ ॥੩੧॥
bin daaman hee ih kaaman yau sabh bhaamin ko man mol leeyo |31|
ਸੀਸ ਫਬੈ ਕਲਗੀ ਤੁਰਰੋ ਸੁਭ ਲਾਲਨ ਕੋ ਸਰਪੇਚ ਸੁਹਾਯੋ ॥
sees fabai kalagee turaro subh laalan ko sarapech suhaayo |
Gracefully she put on a turban with a crest on top.
ਹਾਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਧਰੇ ਉਰ ਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਨੋਜਵ ਕੋ ਬਿਰਮਾਯੋ ॥
haar apaar dhare ur mai man dekh manojav ko biramaayo |
Around the neck she put various necklaces, seeing which even Cupid felt ashamed.
ਬੀਰੀ ਚਬਾਤ ਕਛੂ ਮੁਸਕਾਤ ਬੰਧੇ ਗਜਗਾਹ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਨਚਾਯੋ ॥
beeree chabaat kachhoo musakaat bandhe gajagaah turang nachaayo |
Chewing the beetle-nuts she danced her horse among the tied down elephants.
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਕ ਕੀ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਮਾਨਨਿ ਕੋ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਨੁ ਆਯੋ ॥੩੨॥
sayaam bhanai meh lok kee maanahu maanan ko man mohan aayo |32|
The Poet Siam Bhinay says, it seemed she had come to entice all the women on the earth.(32)

First Mehl:
ਸਚ ਕੀ ਕਾਤੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
sach kee kaatee sach sabh saar |
The knife is Truth, and its steel is totally True.
ਘਾੜਤ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
ghaarrat tis kee apar apaar |
Its workmanship is incomparably beautiful.
ਸਬਦੇ ਸਾਣ ਰਖਾਈ ਲਾਇ ॥
sabade saan rakhaaee laae |
It is sharpened on the grindstone of the Shabad.
ਗੁਣ ਕੀ ਥੇਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
gun kee thekai vich samaae |
It is placed in the scabbard of virtue.
ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੁਠਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਖੁ ॥
tis daa kutthaa hovai sekh |
If the Shaykh is killed with that,
ਲੋਹੂ ਲਬੁ ਨਿਕਥਾ ਵੇਖੁ ॥
lohoo lab nikathaa vekh |
then the blood of greed will spill out.
ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਹਕਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
hoe halaal lagai hak jaae |
One who is slaughtered in this ritualistic way, will be attached to the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਦਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak dar deedaar samaae |2|
O Nanak, at the Lord's door, he is absorbed into His Blessed Vision. ||2||

ਕਮਰਿ ਕਟਾਰਾ ਬੰਕੁੜਾ ਬੰਕੇ ਕਾ ਅਸਵਾਰੁ ॥
kamar kattaaraa bankurraa banke kaa asavaar |
A beautiful dagger hangs by your waist, and you ride such a beautiful horse.
ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਮਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਭਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
garab na keejai naanakaa mat sir aavai bhaar |3|
But don't be too proud; O Nanak, you may fall head first to the ground. ||3||

Pauree:
ਸੋ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਲੈ ॥
so satasangat sabad milai jo guramukh chalai |
They alone walk as Gurmukh, who receive the Shabad in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਖਰਚੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ॥
sach dhiaaein se sache jin har kharach dhan palai |
Meditating on the True Lord, they become truthful; they carry in their robes the supplies of the Lord's wealth.
ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਚਲੈ ॥
bhagat sohan gun gaavade guramat achalai |
The devotees look beautiful, singing the Praises of the Lord; following the Guru's Teachings, they become stable and unchanging.
ਰਤਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਲੈ ॥
ratan beechaar man vasiaa gur kai sabad bhalai |
They enshrine the jewel of contemplation within their minds, and the most sublime Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੯॥
aape mel milaaeidaa aape dee vaddiaaee |19|
He Himself unites in His Union; He Himself grants glorious greatness. ||19||

Salok, Third Mehl:
ਆਸਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕੋਇ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
aasaa andar sabh ko koe niraasaa hoe |
Everyone is filled with hope; hardly anyone is free of hope.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak jo mar jeeviaa sahilaa aaeaa soe |1|
O Nanak, blessed is the birth of one, who remains dead while yet alive. ||1||

Third Mehl:
ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਸਾ ਹਥਿ ਹੈ ਕੇਉ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
naa kichh aasaa hath hai keo niraasaa hoe |
Nothing is in the hands of hope. How can one become free of hope?
ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਏਹ ਬਪੁੜੀ ਜਾਂ ਭੋੁਲਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥
kiaa kare eeh bapurree jaan bhoulaae soe |2|
What can this poor being do? The Lord Himself creates confusion. ||2||

Pauree:
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ॥
dhrig jeevan sansaar sache naam bin |
Cursed is the life in this world, without the True Name.
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਹੁ ਧਨੁ ॥
prabh daataa daataar nihachal ehu dhan |
God is the Great Giver of givers. His wealth is permanent and unchanging.
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਇ ਜਨੁ ॥
saas saas aaraadhe niramal soe jan |
That humble being is immaculate, who worships the Lord with each and every breath.
ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਅਗਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਏਕੁ ਭਨੁ ॥
antarajaamee agam rasanaa ek bhan |
With your tongue, vibrate the One Inaccessible Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੨੦॥
rav rahiaa sarabat naanak bal jaaee |20|
He is all-pervading everywhere. Nanak is a sacrifice to Him. ||20||

Salok, First Mehl:
ਸਰਵਰ ਹੰਸ ਧੁਰੇ ਹੀ ਮੇਲਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
saravar hans dhure hee melaa khasamai evai bhaanaa |
The union between the lake of the True Guru, and the swan of the soul, was pre-ordained from the very beginning, by the Pleasure of the Lord's Will.
ਸਰਵਰ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੀਰਾ ਮੋਤੀ ਸੋ ਹੰਸਾ ਕਾ ਖਾਣਾ ॥
saravar andar heeraa motee so hansaa kaa khaanaa |
The diamonds are in this lake; they are the food of the swans.
ਬਗੁਲਾ ਕਾਗੁ ਨ ਰਹਈ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਤਿ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥
bagulaa kaag na rahee saravar je hovai at siaanaa |
The cranes and the ravens may be very wise, but they do not remain in this lake.
ਓਨਾ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਨ ਪਇਓ ਓਥੈ ਓਨੑਾ ਹੋਰੋ ਖਾਣਾ ॥
onaa rijak na peo othai onaa horo khaanaa |
They do not find their food there; their food is different.
ਸਚਿ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਸਚੋ ਪਾਈਐ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜਾ ਮਾਣਾ ॥
sach kamaanai sacho paaeeai koorrai koorraa maanaa |
Practicing Truth, the True Lord is found. False is the pride of the false.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੌ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿਨਾ ਧੁਰੇ ਪੈਯਾ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
naanak tin kau satigur miliaa jinaa dhure paiyaa paravaanaa |1|
O Nanak, they alone meet the True Guru, who are so pre-destined by the Lord's Command. ||1||

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਉਜਲਾ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
saahib meraa ujalaa je ko chit karee |
My Lord and Master is immaculate, as are those who think of Him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਇ ॥
naanak soee seveeai sadaa sadaa jo dee |
O Nanak, serve Him, who gives to you forever and ever.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
naanak soee seveeai jit seviai dukh jaae |
O Nanak, serve Him; by serving Him, sorrow is dispelled.
ਅਵਗੁਣ ਵੰਞਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸੈ ਆਇ ॥੨॥
avagun vanyan gun raveh man sukh vasai aae |2|
Faults and demerits vanish, and virtues take their place; peace comes to dwell in the mind. ||2||

Pauree:
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈਅਨੁ ॥
aape aap varatadaa aap taarree laaeean |
He Himself is all-pervading; He Himself is absorbed in the profound state of Samaadhi.
ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਉਪਦੇਸਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਤੀਆਈਅਨੁ ॥
aape hee upadesadaa guramukh pateeaeean |
He Himself instructs; the Gurmukh is satisfied and fulfilled.
ਇਕਿ ਆਪੇ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ॥
eik aape ujharr paaeian ik bhagatee laaeian |
Some, He causes to wander in the wilderness, while others are committed to His devotional worship.
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਈਅਨੁ ॥
jis aap bujhaae so bujhasee aape naae laaeean |
He alone understands, whom the Lord causes to understand; He Himself attaches mortals to His Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨੧॥੧॥ ਸੁਧੁ ॥
