ਕਾਜੀ ਔ ਕੁਟਵਾਰ ਪੈ ਨਿਜੁ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਧਿ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥

kaajee aau kuttavaar pai nij pat saadh dikhaae |

She had convinced the Quazi, the police-chief and her husband and,

ਪ੍ਰਥਮੈ ਧਨੁ ਪਹੁਚਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੦॥

prathamai dhan pahuchaae kai bahur milee tih jaae |10|

Then, she left for (the thief) with whom she had entrusted all the fortune.(10)

ਸਭ ਕੋਊ ਐਸੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਖਾਨੈ ॥

sabh koaoo aisee bhaat bakhaanai |

ਨ︀ਯਾਇ ਨ ਭਯੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਕਰ ਮਾਨੈ ॥

nayaae na bhayo taeh kar maanai |

All the people understood that, for not getting the justice and losing

ਧਨੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਰਿ ਝਖਤ ਅਤਿ ਭਈ ॥

dhan bin naar jhakhat at bhee |

ਹ੍ਵੈ ਜੋਗਨ ਬਨ ਮਾਝ ਸਿਧਈ ॥੧੧॥

hvai jogan ban maajh sidhee |11|

all the wealth, she had gone to the jungle and become an ascetic.(11)

ਅਲਿਮਰਦਾ ਕੌ ਸੁਤ ਇਕ ਰਹੈ ॥

alimaradaa kau sut ik rahai |

ਤਾਸ ਬੇਗ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਗ ਕਹੈ ॥

taas beg naamaa jag kahai |

Alimardan (a king) had a son whom the world knew as Taas Beg.

ਬਚਾ ਜੌਹਰੀ ਕੋ ਤਿਨ ਹੇਰਿਯੋ ॥

bachaa jauaharee ko tin heriyo |

ਮਹਾ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਰਿਪੁ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਘੇਰਿਯੋ ॥੧॥

mahaa rudr rip taa kau gheriyo |1|

He (Beg) came across the son of a jeweller and he was overpowered by the god of love.(1)

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦ੍ਵਾਰੇ ਦੇਖਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

taa ke dvaare dekhan jaavai |

ਰੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

roop nihaar hridai sukh paavai |

He would everyday go to his house and find solace by seeing him.

ਕੇਲ ਕਰੋ ਯਾ ਸੋ ਚਿਤ ਭਾਯੋ ॥

kel karo yaa so chit bhaayo |

ਤੁਰਤੁ ਦੂਤ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤਾਹਿ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥੨॥

turat doot grih taeh patthaayo |2|

As he felt to make love with him to seek comfort, he immediately sent him his emissary.(2)

ਦੂਤ ਅਨੇਕ ਉਪਚਾਰ ਬਨਾਵੈ ॥

doot anek upachaar banaavai |

ਮੋਹਨ ਰਾਇ ਹਾਥ ਨਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥

mohan raae haath neh aavai |

The emissary tried hard but Mohan Raae (the boy) would not consent.

ਤਿਹ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥

tih taa so ih bhaat uchaariyo |

ਤਾਸ ਬੇਗ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਖਿਝਿ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੩॥

taas beg taa sau khijh maariyo |3|

When he conveyed the decision to him (Beg), he was perturbed and beat him up.(3)

ਚੋਟਨ ਲਗੇ ਦੂਤ ਰਿਸਿ ਭਰਿਯੋ ॥

chottan lage doot ris bhariyo |

ਮੂਰਖ ਜਾਨਿ ਜਤਨ ਤਿਹ ਕਰਿਯੋ ॥

moorakh jaan jatan tih kariyo |

The emissary became furious on receiving the retribution and,

ਮੋਹਨ ਆਜੁ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਮੈ ਐਹੋ ॥

mohan aaj kahiyo mai aiho |

considering him to be an idiotic, decided to do something.

ਤਾ ਕੌ ਤਾਸ ਬੇਗ ਤੂ ਪੈਹੋ ॥੪॥

taa kau taas beg too paiho |4|

He told Taas Beg, ‘Mohan has consented to come today.’(4)

ਯਹ ਸੁਨਿ ਬੈਨ ਫੂਲਿ ਜੜ ਗਯੋ ॥

yeh sun bain fool jarr gayo |

ਸਾਚ ਬਾਤ ਚੀਨਤ ਚਿਤ ਭਯੋ ॥

saach baat cheenat chit bhayo |

Hearing this, his joy knew no bounds, as he took it to be true.

ਲੋਗ ਉਠਾਇ ਪਾਨ ਮਦ ਕਰਿਯੋ ॥

log utthaae paan mad kariyo |

He sent away the people and started to drink wine.

ਮਾਨੁਖ ਹੁਤੋ ਜੋਨਿ ਪਸੁ ਪਰਿਯੋ ॥੫॥

maanukh huto jon pas pariyo |5|

Although human being, he had embraced the life of an animal.(5)

ਮੋ ਮਨ ਮੋਲ ਮੋਹਨਹਿ ਲਯੋ ॥

mo man mol mohaneh layo |

ਤਬ ਤੇ ਮੈ ਚੇਰੋ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਯੋ ॥

tab te mai chero hvai gayo |

(He thought,) ‘My heart is already in the hands of Mohan and I have become his slave since (I saw him).

ਏਕ ਬਾਰ ਜੌ ਤਾਹਿ ਨਿਹਾਰੋ ॥

ek baar jau taeh nihaaro |

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨ ਤਾ ਪੈ ਸਭ ਵਾਰੋ ॥੬॥

tan man dhan taa pai sabh vaaro |6|

‘Who-so-ever has a glimpse of him, sacrifices his own life over him.’(6)

ਬਿਨੁ ਸੁਧਿ ਭਏ ਦੂਤ ਤਿਹ ਚੀਨੋ ॥

bin sudh bhe doot tih cheeno |

ਅੰਡ ਫੋਰਿ ਆਸਨ ਪਰ ਦੀਨੋ ॥

andd for aasan par deeno |

When the emissary judged he was totally intoxicated with wine, he broke an egg and spread it on his bed.

ਭੂਖਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਗ ਤਿਹ ਹਰੀ ॥

bhookhan basatr paag tih haree |

ਮੂਰਖ ਕੌ ਸੁਧਿ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਪਰੀ ॥੭॥

moorakh kau sudh kachhoo na paree |7|

He took away his ornaments, the clothes and the turban, and the fool remained unaware.(7)

ਮਦਰਾ ਕੀ ਅਤਿ ਭਈ ਖੁਮਾਰੀ ॥

madaraa kee at bhee khumaaree |

ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਲਗੇ ਜੜ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਸੰਭਾਰੀ ॥

praat lage jarr budh na sanbhaaree |

The intoxication through wine was so intense that, till morning, he did not regain consciousness.

ਬੀਤੀ ਰੈਨਿ ਭਯੋ ਉਜਿਯਾਰੋ ॥

beetee rain bhayo ujiyaaro |

ਤਨ ਮਨ ਅਪਨੇ ਆਪ ਸੰਭਾਰੋ ॥੮॥

tan man apane aap sanbhaaro |8|

When the night had lapsed and the day broke, he managed to control his mind and body.(8)

ਹਾਥ ਜਾਇ ਆਸਨ ਪਰ ਪਰਿਯੋ ॥

haath jaae aasan par pariyo |

ਚੌਕਿ ਬਚਨ ਤਬ ਮੂੜ ਉਚਰਿਯੋ ॥

chauak bachan tab moorr uchariyo |

When his hand fell over his bed, the idiot thought over,

ਨਿਕਟ ਆਪਨੋ ਦੂਤ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥

nikatt aapano doot bulaayo |

ਤਿਨ ਕਹਿ ਭੇਦ ਸਕਲ ਸਮੁਝਾਯੋ ॥੯॥

tin keh bhed sakal samujhaayo |9|

And called over his emissary, who on query made him to understand thus,(9)

ਮਤ ਭਏ ਤੁਮ ਮਦ ਭਏ ਸਕਿਯੋ ਕਛੂ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

mat bhe tum mad bhe sakiyo kachhoo neh paae |

‘You were totally under intoxication and would not remember.

ਮਮ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਸਦਨ ਆਯੋ ਮੋਹਨ ਰਾਇ ॥੧੦॥

mam prasaad tumare sadan aayo mohan raae |10|

‘Mohan Raae, on my persuasion, had come to your house.(10)

Third Mehl:

ਧੰਧਾ ਧਾਵਤ ਦਿਨੁ ਗਇਆ ਰੈਣਿ ਗਵਾਈ ਸੋਇ ॥

dhandhaa dhaavat din geaa rain gavaaee soe |

Chasing after worldly affairs, the day is wasted, and the night passes in sleep.

ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਰੋਇ ॥

koorr bol bikh khaaeaa manamukh chaliaa roe |

Speaking lies, one eats poison; the self-willed manmukh departs, crying out in pain.

ਸਿਰੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥

sirai upar jam ddandd hai doojai bhaae pat khoe |

The Mesenger of Death holds his club over the mortal's head; in the love of duality, he loses his honor.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

har naam kade na chetio fir aavan jaanaa hoe |

He never even thinks of the Name of the Lord; over and over again, he comes and goes in reincarnation.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

gur parasaadee har man vasai jam ddandd na laagai koe |

But if, by Guru's Grace, the Lord's Name comes to dwell in his mind, then the Messenger of Death will not strike him down with his club.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

naanak sahaje mil rahai karam paraapat hoe |2|

Then, O Nanak, he merges intuitively into the Lord, receiving His Grace. ||2||

Pauree:

ਇਕਿ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਦੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤੀ ॥

eik aapanee sifatee laaeian de satigur matee |

Some are linked to His Praises, when the Lord blesses them with the Guru's Teachings.

ਇਕਨਾ ਨੋ ਨਾਉ ਬਖਸਿਓਨੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਤੀ ॥

eikanaa no naau bakhasion asathir har satee |

Some are blessed with the Name of the eternal, unchanging True Lord.

ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੋ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਗਤੀ ॥

paun paanee baisantaro hukam kareh bhagatee |

Water, air and fire, by His Will, worship Him.

ਏਨਾ ਨੋ ਭਉ ਅਗਲਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਤੀ ॥

enaa no bhau agalaa pooree banat banatee |

They are held in the Fear of God; He has formed the perfect form.

ਸਭੁ ਇਕੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥

sabh iko hukam varatadaa maniai sukh paaee |3|

The Hukam, the Command of the One Lord is all-pervasive; accepting it, peace is found. ||3||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥

Salok:

ਕਬੀਰ ਕਸਉਟੀ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਝੂਠਾ ਟਿਕੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

kabeer ksauttee raam kee jhootthaa ttikai na koe |

Kabeer, such is the touchstone of the Lord; the false cannot even touch it.

ਰਾਮ ਕਸਉਟੀ ਸੋ ਸਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਰਜੀਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

raam ksauttee so sahai jo marajeevaa hoe |1|

He alone passes this test of the Lord, who remains dead while yet alive. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਰਤਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

kiau kar ihu man maareeai kiau kar miratak hoe |

How can this mind be conquered? How can it be killed?

ਕਹਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਮਾਨਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਛਡੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

kahiaa sabad na maanee haumai chhaddai na koe |

If one does not accept the Word of the Shabad, egotism does not depart.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਛੁਟੈ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥

gur parasaadee haumai chhuttai jeevan mukat so hoe |

By Guru's Grace, egotism is eradicated, and then, one is Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥

naanak jis no bakhase tis milai tis bighan na laagai koe |2|

O Nanak, one whom the Lord forgives is united with Him, and then no obstacles block his way. ||2||

Third Mehl:

ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਣਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਇ ॥

jeevat maranaa sabh ko kahai jeevan mukat kiau hoe |

Everyone can say that they are dead while yet alive; how can they be liberated while yet alive?

ਭੈ ਕਾ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਜੇ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਰੂ ਭਾਉ ਲਾਏਇ ॥

bhai kaa sanjam je kare daaroo bhaau laaee |

If someone restrains himself through the Fear of God, and takes the medicine of the Love of God,

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰੇਇ ॥

anadin gun gaavai sukh sahaje bikh bhavajal naam taree |

night and day, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. In celestial peace and poise, he crosses over the poisonous, terrifying world-ocean, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੩॥

naanak guramukh paaeeai jaa kau nadar karee |3|

O Nanak, the Gurmukh finds the Lord; he is blessed with His Glance of Grace. ||3||

Pauree:

ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਰਚਾਇਓਨੁ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ॥

doojaa bhaau rachaaeon trai gun varataaraa |

God created the love of duality, and the three modes which pervade the universe.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਉਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਕਮਾਵਨਿ ਕਾਰਾ ॥

brahamaa bisan mahes upaaeian hukam kamaavan kaaraa |

He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, who act according to His Will.

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਦੇ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

panddit parrade jotakee naa boojheh beechaaraa |

The Pandits, the religious scholars, and the astrologers study their books, but they do not understand contemplation.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥

sabh kichh teraa khel hai sach sirajanahaaraa |

Everything is Your play, O True Creator Lord.

ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਖਸਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੪॥

jis bhaavai tis bakhas laihi sach sabad samaaee |4|

As it pleases You, You bless us with forgiveness, and merge us in the True Word of the Shabad. ||4||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

salok mahalaa 3 |

Salok, Third Mehl:

ਮਨ ਕਾ ਝੂਠਾ ਝੂਠੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

man kaa jhootthaa jhootth kamaavai |

The man of false mind practices falsehood.

ਮਾਇਆ ਨੋ ਫਿਰੈ ਤਪਾ ਸਦਾਵੈ ॥

maaeaa no firai tapaa sadaavai |

He runs after Maya, and yet pretends to be a man of disciplined meditation.

ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਸਭਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਗਹੈ ॥

bharame bhoolaa sabh teerath gahai |

Deluded by doubt, he visits all the sacred shrines of pilgrimage.

ਓਹੁ ਤਪਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਲਹੈ ॥

ohu tapaa kaise param gat lahai |

How can such a man of disciplined meditation attain the supreme status?

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

gur parasaadee ko sach kamaavai |

By Guru's Grace, one lives the Truth.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਤਪਾ ਮੋਖੰਤਰੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

naanak so tapaa mokhantar paavai |1|

O Nanak, such a man of disciplined meditation attains liberation. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਸੋ ਤਪਾ ਜਿ ਇਹੁ ਤਪੁ ਘਾਲੇ ॥

so tapaa ji ihu tap ghaale |

He alone is a man of disciplined meditation, who practices this self-discipline.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥

satigur no milai sabad samaale |

Meeting with the True Guru, he contemplates the Word of the Shabad.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਪੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

satigur kee sevaa ihu tap paravaan |

Serving the True Guru - this is the only acceptable disciplined meditation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਤਪਾ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

naanak so tapaa darageh paavai maan |2|

O Nanak, such a man of disciplined meditation is honored in the Court of the Lord. ||2||

Pauree:

ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਉਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੀ ਵਰਤਣਿ ॥

raat dinas upaaeian sansaar kee varatan |

He created the night and the day, for the activities of the world.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਆਨੇਰੁ ਬਿਨਾਸਣਿ ॥

guramatee ghatt chaananaa aaner binaasan |

Following the Guru's Teachings, one's heart is illumined, and the darkness is dispelled.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਵਣਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਣਿ ॥

hukame hee sabh saajeean raviaa sabh van trin |

By the Hukam of His Command, He creates everything; He pervades and permeates all the woods and meadows.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਣਿ ॥

sabh kichh aape aap hai guramukh sadaa har bhan |

He Himself is everything; the Gurmukh constantly chants the Lord's Name.

ਸਬਦੇ ਹੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਈ ਸਚੈ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੫॥

sabade hee sojhee pee sachai aap bujhaaee |5|

Through the Shabad, understanding comes; the True Lord Himself inspires us to understand. ||5||
