ਮੋਹਨ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਿਝਾਯੋ ॥
mohan tum ko adhik rijhaayo |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਵ ਲਡਾਯੋ ॥
bhaat bhaat kar bhaav laddaayo |
‘Mohan gave you pleasure by indulging in various gesticulations.
ਤਬ ਤੁਮ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਕਾ ਨ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥
tab tum kachh sankaa na bichaaree |
ਭੂਖਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਗ ਦੈ ਡਾਰੀ ॥੧੧॥
bhookhan basatr paag dai ddaaree |11|
‘You were never in doubt and you gave him all your ornaments, the clothes and the turban.(11)
ਤਾ ਸੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਕੇਲ ਤੈ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
taa so adhik kel tai keeno |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਰਸ ਲੀਨੋ ॥
bhaat bhaat taa kau ras leeno |
‘You made love with him lavishly,
ਬੀਤੀ ਰੈਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਜਬ ਭਯੋ ॥
beetee rain praat jab bhayo |
ਤਬ ਤੁਮ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਿਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਦਯੋ ॥੧੨॥
tab tum taeh bidaa kar dayo |12|
and when the day broke you bade him good-bye.(12)
ਤਬ ਤੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਮਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਸੋਯੋ ॥
tab te adhik mat hvai soyo |
ਪਰੇ ਪਰੇ ਆਧੋ ਦਿਨ ਖੋਯੋ ॥
pare pare aadho din khoyo |
‘Since, then, you have been sleeping, nonchalantly, and half the day has gone by.
ਮਿਟਿ ਮਦ ਗਯੋ ਜਬੈ ਸੁਧ ਪਾਈ ॥
mitt mad gayo jabai sudh paaee |
ਤਬ ਮੋ ਕੌ ਤੈ ਲਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਈ ॥੧੩॥
tab mo kau tai layo bulaaee |13|
When the effect ofthe intoxication wore off, you called me over.’(13)
ਯਹ ਸੁਨਿ ਬਾਤ ਰੀਝਿ ਜੜ ਗਯੋ ॥
yeh sun baat reejh jarr gayo |
ਛੋਰਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਅਧਿਕ ਧਨੁ ਦਯੋ ॥
chhor bhanddaar adhik dhan dayo |
The imbecile was appeased on learning this and, from his treasure, gave him lot of riches.
ਭੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਕਛੁ ਨੈਕੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੋ ॥
bhed abhed kachh naik na cheeno |
ਲੂਟ︀ਯੋ ਹੁਤੋ ਲੂਟਿ ਧਨੁ ਲੀਨੋ ॥੧੪॥
loottayo huto loott dhan leeno |14|
He did not distinguish between the truth and deception and squandered his wealth.(14)
ਯਹ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਵਹ ਨਿਤਿ ਬਨਾਵੈ ॥
yeh charitr veh nit banaavai |
ਮਦਰੋ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਇ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਿਹ ਸ੍ਵਾਵੈ ॥
madaro prayaae adhik tih svaavai |
Now (the emissary) set off on this design everyday, and put Beg into sleep with excessive wine.
ਸੁਧਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਯੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਜਬ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
sudh bin bhayo taeh jab jaanai |
ਲੇਤ ਉਤਾਰਿ ਜੁ ਕਛੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੧੫॥
let utaar ju kachh man maanai |15|
When he would realize he was in deep slumber, he would do whatever he liked.(15)

ਹਮ ਕੌ ਭੂਖਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਸੰਤਾਯੋ ॥
ham kau bhookh adhik santaayo |
Four thieves cooked up a plan, as they were feeling very hungry.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਜਤਨ ਕਛੂ ਅਬ ਕਰਿਯੈ ॥
taa te jatan kachhoo ab kariyai |
ਬਕਰਾ ਯਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਕੋ ਹਰਿਯੈ ॥੧॥
bakaraa yaa moorakh ko hariyai |1|
‘We should endeavour and steal a goat from an idiot.’(1)
ਕੋਸ ਕੋਸ ਲਗਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਭਏ ॥
kos kos lag tthaadte bhe |
ਮਨ ਮੈ ਇਹੈ ਬਿਚਾਰਤ ਭਏ ॥
man mai ihai bichaarat bhe |
They all went and stood at a crossing and thought ofthe strategy (to rob a passing by man with a goat on his shoulders).
ਵਹ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਆਗੇ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਆਯੋ ॥
veh jaa ke aage hvai aayo |
ਤਿਨ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥੨॥
tin taa so ih bhaat sunaayo |2|
‘Who-so-ever (thief) faced him, would say like that,(2)
ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਏਹਿ ਕਾਧੋ ਪੈ ਲਯੋ ॥
kahaa su ehi kaadho pai layo |
ਕਾ ਤੋਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਕੋ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਯੋ ॥
kaa toree mat ko hvai gayo |
‘What are you carrying on your shoulders? What has happened to your intelligence?
ਯਾ ਕੋ ਪਟਕਿ ਧਰਨਿ ਪਰ ਮਾਰੋ ॥
yaa ko pattak dharan par maaro |
ਸੁਖ ਸੇਤੀ ਨਿਜ ਧਾਮ ਸਿਧਾਰੋ ॥੩॥
sukh setee nij dhaam sidhaaro |3|
‘Throw it on the ground and go to your house peacefully.(3)

‘Acknowledging you as a wise man, we are advising you.
ਕੂਕਰ ਤੈ ਕਾਧੈ ਲਯੋ ਲਾਜ ਲਗਤ ਹੈ ਮੋਹਿ ॥੪॥
kookar tai kaadhai layo laaj lagat hai mohi |4|
“You are carrying a dog on your shoulders and we feel ashamed of you.”(4)

ਚਾਰਿ ਕੋਸ ਮੂਰਖ ਜਬ ਆਯੋ ॥

ਚਹੂੰਅਨ ਯੌ ਬਚ ਭਾਖਿ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
chahoonan yau bach bhaakh sunaayo |
When the foolish-man had travelled four miles, the four (thieves) repeated the same tactic.
ਸਾਚੁ ਸਮੁਝਿ ਲਾਜਤ ਚਿਤ ਭਯੋ ॥
saach samujh laajat chit bhayo |
ਬਕਰਾ ਸ੍ਵਾਨਿ ਜਾਨਿ ਤਜਿ ਦਯੋ ॥੫॥
bakaraa svaan jaan taj dayo |5|
He believed them to be true and threw down the goat deeming it to be dog.(5)

Salok, Third Mehl:
ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿ ਭਰਮੁ ॥
abhiaagat ehi na aakheean jin ke chit meh bharam |
He is not called a renunciate, whose consciousness is filled with doubt.
ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਦਿਤੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਧਰਮੁ ॥
tis dai ditai naanakaa teho jehaa dharam |
Donations to him bring proportionate rewards.
ਅਭੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਭੂਖਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
abhai niranjan param pad taa kaa bhookhaa hoe |
He hungers for the supreme status of the Fearless, Immaculate Lord;
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
tis kaa bhojan naanakaa viralaa paae koe |1|
O Nanak, how rare are those who offer him this food. ||1||

Third Mehl:
ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਜਿ ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
abhiaagat ehi na aakheean ji par ghar bhojan karen |
They are not called renunciates, who take food in the homes of others.
ਉਦਰੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਹਲੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
audarai kaaran aapane bahale bhekh karen |
For the sake of their bellies, they wear various religious robes.
ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿ ਆਤਮ ਗਉਣੁ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
abhiaagat seee naanakaa ji aatam gaun karen |
They alone are renunciates, O Nanak, who enter into their own souls.
ਭਾਲਿ ਲਹਨਿ ਸਹੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਰਹਣੁ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥੨॥
bhaal lehan sahu aapanaa nij ghar rehan karen |2|
They seek and find their Husband Lord; they dwell within the home of their own inner self. ||2||

Pauree:
ਅੰਬਰੁ ਧਰਤਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਿਅਨੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਾ ਅਸਰਾਉ ॥
anbar dharat vichhorrian vich sachaa asaraau |
They sky and the earth are separate, but the True Lord supports them from within.
ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਸਭੋ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
ghar dar sabho sach hai jis vich sachaa naau |
True are all those homes and gates, within which the True Name is enshrined.
ਸਭੁ ਸਚਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥
sabh sachaa hukam varatadaa guramukh sach samaau |
The Hukam of the True Lord's Command is effective everywhere. The Gurmukh merges in the True Lord.
ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਤਖਤੁ ਸਚਾ ਬਹਿ ਸਚਾ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਆਉ ॥
sachaa aap takhat sachaa beh sachaa kare niaau |
He Himself is True, and True is His throne. Seated upon it, He administers true justice.
ਸਭੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਈ ॥੬॥
sabh sacho sach varatadaa guramukh alakh lakhaaee |6|
The Truest of the True is all-pervading everywhere; the Gurmukh sees the unseen. ||6||

ਰੈਣਾਇਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਅਨੰਤੁ ਹੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
rainaaeir maeh anant hai koorree aavai jaae |
In the world-ocean, the Infinite Lord abides. The false come and go in reincarnation.
ਭਾਣੈ ਚਲੈ ਆਪਣੈ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
bhaanai chalai aapanai bahutee lahai sajaae |
One who walks according to his own will, suffers terrible punishment.
ਰੈਣਾਇਰ ਮਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੈ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
rainaaeir meh sabh kichh hai karamee palai paae |
All things are in the world-ocean, but they are obtained only by the karma of good actions.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਚਲੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak nau nidh paaeeai je chalai tisai rajaae |1|
O Nanak, he alone obtains the nine treasures, who walks in the Will of the Lord. ||1||

Third Mehl:
ਸਹਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਨਮਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥
sahaje satigur na sevio vich haumai janam binaas |
One who doesn't intuitively serve the True Guru, loses his life in egotism.
ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨ ਚਖਿਓ ਕਮਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਇਓ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
rasanaa har ras na chakhio kamal na hoeo paragaas |
His tongue does not taste the sublime essence of the Lord, and his heart-lotus does not blossom forth.
ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਧੀ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਮੁਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥
bikh khaadhee manamukh muaa maaeaa mohi vinaas |
The self-willed manmukh eats poison and dies; he is ruined by love and attachment to Maya.
ਇਕਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
eikas har ke naam vin dhrig jeevan dhrig vaas |
Without the Name of the One Lord, his life is cursed, and his home is cursed as well.
ਜਾ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਚਾ ਤਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸੁ ॥
jaa aape nadar kare prabh sachaa taa hovai daasan daas |
When God Himself bestows His Glance of Grace, then one becomes the slave of His slaves.
ਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਪਾਸੁ ॥
taa anadin sevaa kare satiguroo kee kabeh na chhoddai paas |
And then, night and day, he serves the True Guru, and never leaves His side.
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਤਿਉ ਵਿਚੇ ਗਿਰਹ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥
jiau jal meh kamal alipato varatai tiau viche girah udaas |
As the lotus flower floats unaffected in the water, so does he remain detached in his own household.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
jan naanak kare karaaeaa sabh ko jiau bhaavai tiv har gunataas |2|
O servant Nanak, the Lord acts, and inspires everyone to act, according to the Pleasure of His Will. He is the treasure of virtue. ||2||

Pauree:
ਛਤੀਹ ਜੁਗ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਸਾ ਆਪੇ ਗਣਤ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
chhateeh jug gubaar saa aape ganat keenee |
For thirty-six ages, there was utter darkness. Then, the Lord revealed Himself.
ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਮਤਿ ਦੀਨੀ ॥
aape srisatt sabh saajeean aap mat deenee |
He Himself created the entire universe. He Himself blessed it with understanding.
ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਾਜਿਅਨੁ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਗਣਤ ਗਣੀਨੀ ॥
simrit saasat saajian paap pun ganat ganeenee |
He created the Simritees and the Shaastras; He calculates the accounts of virtue and vice.
ਜਿਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਨੀ ॥
jis bujhaae so bujhasee sachai sabad pateenee |
He alone understands, whom the Lord inspires to understand and to be pleased with the True Word of the Shabad.
ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੭॥
sabh aape aap varatadaa aape bakhas milaaee |7|
He Himself is all-pervading; He Himself forgives, and unites with Himself. ||7||

Salok, Third Mehl:
ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਭੋ ਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਰਤੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਤੰਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
eihu tan sabho rat hai rat bin tan na hoe |
This body is all blood; without blood, the body cannot exist.
ਜੋ ਸਹਿ ਰਤੇ ਆਪਣੈ ਤਿਨ ਤਨਿ ਲੋਭ ਰਤੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
jo seh rate aapanai tin tan lobh rat na hoe |
Those who are attuned to their Lord - their bodies are not filled with the blood of greed.
ਭੈ ਪਇਐ ਤਨੁ ਖੀਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਲੋਭ ਰਤੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
bhai peiai tan kheen hoe lobh rat vichahu jaae |
In the Fear of God, the body becomes thin, and the blood of greed passes out of the body.
ਜਿਉ ਬੈਸੰਤਰਿ ਧਾਤੁ ਸੁਧੁ ਹੋਇ ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
jiau baisantar dhaat sudh hoe tiau har kaa bhau duramat mail gavaae |
As fire purifies metal, so does the Fear of the Lord eradicate the filth of evil-mindedness.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak te jan sohane jo rate har rang laae |1|
O Nanak, beautiful are those humble beings, who are imbued with the Lord's Love. ||1||
