ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਘੋਰਾ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਥੀ ਸੰਗ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
sasatr asatr ghoraa nahee saathee sang na koe |
‘Neither I have arms, nor I possess any horses. I have no companion.
ਅਤਿ ਮੁਸਕਿਲ ਮੋ ਕੌ ਬਨੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧੭॥
at musakil mo kau banee karataa karai su hoe |17|
‘I am plunged in a great predicament. Now, only God can help me.(17)
ਸਾਥੀ ਕੋਊ ਸੰਗ ਨਹੀ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੋ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
saathee koaoo sang nahee kaa so karo pukaar |
‘I have no friend, who could cry for help?
ਮਨਸਾ ਬਾਚਾ ਕਰਮਨਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਹਨਿ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਧਾਰ ॥੧੮॥
manasaa baachaa karamanaa mohi han hai niradhaar |18|
‘To prove her words, she must have ascertained to terminate me.’(18)
ਖਾਇ ਮਿਠਾਈ ਰਾਵ ਤਬ ਦੀਯੋ ਪਿਟਾਰੋ ਦਾਨ ॥
khaae mitthaaee raav tab deeyo pittaaro daan |
The Raja savoured some sweetment and, then, bestowed the rest of the basket with benediction.
ਵਹ ਬਿਵਾਹਿ ਤਿਹ ਲੈ ਗਯੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਨਿ ॥੧੯॥
veh bivaeh tih lai gayo adhik hridai sukh maan |19|
Thereafter, he married her and with great satisfaction took her with him.(l9)
ਦੁਹਿਤ ਜਾਮਾਤਾ ਸਹਿਤ ਜੀਯਤ ਦਯੋ ਪਠਾਇ ॥
duhit jaamaataa sahit jeeyat dayo patthaae |
The woman bade goodbye to her daughter along with the son-in-law,
ਸਭ ਦੇਖਤ ਦਿਨ ਕਾਢਿਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਹਿ ਮਠਾਈ ਖ੍ਵਾਇ ॥੨੦॥
sabh dekhat din kaadtiyo nripeh matthaaee khvaae |20|
And she accomplished this just by making Raja to eat some sweetments.(20)

daiv dait kinahoon neh paayo |
No body, not even the gods and the demons, can grasp the Chritars.
ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਕਿਸਹੂ ਕਹਿਯੈ ॥
triyaa charitr na kisahoo kahiyai |
ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਸਮਝਿ ਮੋਨਿ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥੨੧॥
chit mai samajh mon hvai rahiyo |21|
What should we designate and Chritar? It is rather prudent to keep quiet. (21)(1)

jaa kee tul kahoon neh saajaa |
In the city of Uric hang, there lived a Raja named Uchsrav; there was none other like him.
ਰੂਪ ਕਲਾ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਵਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
roop kalaa taa kee var naaree |
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਕਾਮ ਕੰਦਲਾ ਪ︀ਯਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
maanahu kaam kandalaa payaaree |1|
Roop Kala was his woman; and she was embodiment of the Cupid.(1)

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਨਾਥ ਜੋਗੀ ਹੁਤੋ ਸੋ ਤਹਿ ਨਿਕਸਿਯੋ ਆਇ ॥

There was one yogi called Inder Nath. When he passed that way,
ਝਰਨਨ ਤੇ ਝਾਈ ਪਰੀ ਰਾਨੀ ਲਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
jharanan te jhaaee paree raanee layo bulaae |2|
Rani looked at him through the ventilator and called him in.(2)

ਜੋਗੀ ਦੈ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਤਹ ਆਵੈ ॥
jogee dai anjan teh aavai |
ਗੁਟਕੈ ਬਲੁ ਕੈ ਬਹੁ ਉਡਿ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
guttakai bal kai bahu udd jaavai |
Yogi had given her the powder for eye-lashes, through its power she could fly.
ਜਿਸੀ ਠੌਰ ਚਾਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
jisee tthauar chaahai tis jaavai |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੈ ਭੋਗ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
bhaat bhaat kai bhog kamaavai |3|
She would fly to any place she liked, and indulged in variety of sexplays.(3)
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੇ ਦੇਸ ਨਿਹਾਰੈ ॥
bhaat bhaat ke des nihaarai |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਬਿਚਾਰੈ ॥
bhaat bhaat kee prabhaa bichaarai |
She went to various countries, and relished diverse beauties.
ਅੰਜਨ ਬਲ ਤਿਹ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
anjan bal tih koaoo na paavai |
ਤਿਸੀ ਠੌਰ ਰਨਿਯਹਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
tisee tthauar raniyeh lai jaavai |4|
With the faculty of powder, she was not visible to anyone

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੇ ਦੇਸ ਮੈ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਗੌਨ ॥
bhaat bhaat ke des mai bhaat bhaat kar gauan |
She went to various countries, and relished diverse beauties.
ਐਸੇ ਸੁਖਨ ਬਿਲੋਕਿ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪਰ ਰੀਝਤ ਕੌਨ ॥੫॥
aise sukhan bilok kai nrip par reejhat kauan |5|
And, every time she would return her original place.(5)

adhik kop man maajh basaavaa |
When the Raja learned aboUt this secret trait, he flew into a rage. He
ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਕੌਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
chit meh kahiyo kauan bidh keejai |
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਸ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
jaa te naas triyaa kar deejai |6|
Eliberated on some plans to annihilate that woman.(6)
ਰਾਜਾ ਤਹਾ ਆਪਿ ਚਲਿ ਆਯੋ ॥
raajaa tahaa aap chal aayo |
ਪਾਇਨ ਕੋ ਖਰਕੋ ਨ ਜਤਾਯੋ ॥
paaein ko kharako na jataayo |
Raja walked to the place; not to make noise, he tiptoed.
ਸੇਜ ਸੋਤ ਜੋਗਿਯਹਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
sej sot jogiyeh nihaariyo |
ਕਾਢਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੭॥
kaadt kripaan maar hee ddaariyo |7|
He saw the yogi sleeping in the bed; he took out his sword and killed him.(7)
ਗੁਟਕਾ ਹੁਤੋ ਹਾਥ ਮਹਿ ਲਯੋ ॥
guttakaa huto haath meh layo |
ਜੁਗਿਯਹਿ ਡਾਰਿ ਕੁਠਰਿਯਹਿ ਦਯੋ ॥
jugiyeh ddaar kutthariyeh dayo |
He took away booklet (magic material), and pushed the yogi into the dungeon
ਸ੍ਰੋਨ ਪੋਛ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਸੋ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
sron pochh basatran so ddaariyo |
ਸੇਵਤ ਰਾਨੀ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬਿਛਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੮॥
sevat raanee kachh na bichhaariyo |8|
He cleaned the blood stains with the cloth but did not let Rani know.(8)

Raja wrote a letter on behalf of the Yogi,
ਰਾਨੀ ਮੈ ਬੇਖਰਚਿ ਹੌਂ ਕਛੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਦੇਹੁ ਪਠਾਇ ॥੯॥
raanee mai bekharach hauan kachh muhi dehu patthaae |9|
I have no money to spend, please send me some.(9)

ਇਸੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਪਠਾਵੈ ॥

ਸਭ ਰਾਨੀ ਕੋ ਦਰਬ ਚੁਰਾਵੈ ॥
sabh raanee ko darab churaavai |
This way he wrote everyday one letter and snatched all the wealth belonging to the Rani.
ਧਨੀ ਹੁਤੀ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਈ ॥
dhanee hutee niradhan hvai gee |
ਨ੍ਰਿਪਹੂੰ ਡਾਰਿ ਚਿਤ ਤੇ ਦਈ ॥੧੦॥
nripahoon ddaar chit te dee |10|
She was turned from a rich to a poor woman, and the Raja expunged her from his heart.(10)
ਜੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਧਨੁ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jo nrip dhan isatree te paavai |
ਟਕਾ ਟਕਾ ਕਰਿ ਦਿਜਨ ਲੁਟਾਵੈ ॥
ttakaa ttakaa kar dijan luttaavai |
Whatever wealth Raja squeezed out of that woman, he distributed among Brahmins, the priests.
ਤਿਹ ਸੌਤਿਨ ਸੌ ਕੇਲ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
tih sauatin sau kel kamaavai |
ਤਾ ਕੇ ਨਿਕਟ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਆਵੈ ॥੧੧॥
taa ke nikatt na kabahoon aavai |11|
Be would make love with the co-wives but never went near her.(11)
ਸਭ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਧਨੁ ਲਯੋ ਚੁਰਾਈ ॥
sabh taa ko dhan layo churaaee |
ਸੌਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਭੀਖ ਮੰਗਾਈ ॥
sauatin ke grih bheekh mangaaee |
ਲਏ ਠੀਕਰੌ ਹਾਥ ਬਿਹਾਰੈ ॥
le ttheekarau haath bihaarai |
ਭੀਖਿ ਸੋਤਿ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਹਿ ਡਾਰੈ ॥੧੨॥
bheekh sot taa ko neh ddaarai |12|
Be swindled all her wealth and made her to go and beg at the doors of the co-wives.(12)
ਦ੍ਵਾਰ ਦ੍ਵਾਰ ਤੇ ਭੀਖ ਮੰਗਾਈ ॥
dvaar dvaar te bheekh mangaaee |
ਦਰਬੁ ਹੁਤੋ ਸੋ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥
darab huto so rahiyo na kaaee |
Be forced her to go begging from door to door as she was left with no money at all.
ਭੂਖਨ ਮਰਤ ਦੁਖਿਤ ਅਤਿ ਭਈ ॥
bhookhan marat dukhit at bhee |
ਟੂਕਨ ਹੀ ਮਾਗਤ ਮਰਿ ਗਈ ॥੧੩॥

Living desperately, and remaining hungry, she breathed her last.(13)(10)

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਪੇਖੀਅਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਗਲ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਧਾਰਨਾ ॥੧॥
jeea jant sabh pekheeeh prabh sagal tumaaree dhaaranaa |1|
All beings and creatures that are seen, God, depend on Your Support. ||1||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਾਰਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
eihu man har kai naam udhaaranaa |1| rahaau |
This mind is saved through the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਨਾ ॥੨॥
khin meh thaap uthaape kudarat sabh karate ke kaaranaa |2|
In an instant, He establishes and disestablishes, by His Creative Power. All is the Creation of the Creator. ||2||
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਨਾ ॥੩॥
kaam krodh lobh jhootth nindaa saadhoo sang bidaaranaa |3|
Sexual desire, anger, greed, falsehood and slander are banished in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||3||
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੂਖੇ ਸੂਖਿ ਗੁਦਾਰਨਾ ॥੪॥
naam japat man niramal hovai sookhe sookh gudaaranaa |4|
Chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mind becomes immaculate, and life is passed in absolute peace. ||4||
ਭਗਤ ਸਰਣਿ ਜੋ ਆਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਨ ਹਾਰਨਾ ॥੫॥
bhagat saran jo aavai praanee tis eehaa aoohaa na haaranaa |5|
That mortal who enters the Sanctuary of the devotees, does not lose out, here or hereafter. ||5||
ਸੂਖ ਦੂਖ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਆਗੈ ਸਾਰਨਾ ॥੬॥
sookh dookh is man kee birathaa tum hee aagai saaranaa |6|
Pleasure and pain, and the condition of this mind, I place before You, Lord. ||6||
ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਆਪਨ ਕੀਆ ਪਾਲਨਾ ॥੭॥
too daataa sabhanaa jeea kaa aapan keea paalanaa |7|
You are the Giver of all beings; You cherish what You have made. ||7||
ਅਨਿਕ ਬਾਰ ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵੰਞੈ ਵਾਰਨਾ ॥੮॥੫॥
anik baar kott jan aoopar naanak vanyai vaaranaa |8|5|
So many millions of times, Nanak is a sacrifice to Your humble servants. ||8||5||

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਭੇਟਤ ਪਾਪ ਸਭਿ ਨਾਸਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੧॥
darasan bhettat paap sabh naaseh har siau dee milaaee |1|
Receiving the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, all sins are erased, and He unites me with the Lord. ||1||
ਮੇਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥
meraa gur paramesar sukhadaaee |
My Guru is the Transcendent Lord, the Giver of peace.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ਅੰਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paarabraham kaa naam drirraae ante hoe sakhaaee |1| rahaau |
He implants the Naam, the Name of the Supreme Lord God within us; in the end, He is our help and support. ||1||Pause||
ਸਗਲ ਦੂਖ ਕਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਭੰਨਾ ਸੰਤ ਧੂਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਈ ॥੨॥
sagal dookh kaa dderaa bhanaa sant dhoor mukh laaee |2|
The source of all pain within is destroyed; I apply the dust of the feet of the Saints to my forehead. ||2||
ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕੀਏ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਵੰਞਾਈ ॥੩॥
patit puneet kee khin bheetar agiaan andher vanyaaee |3|
In an instant, He purifies the sinners, and dispels the darkness of ignorance. ||3||
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੪॥
karan kaaran samarath suaamee naanak tis saranaaee |4|
The Lord is all-powerful, the Cause of causes. Nanak seeks His Sanctuary. ||4||
ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜਿ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ਏਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
bandhan torr charan kamal drirraae ek sabad liv laaee |5|
Shattering the bonds, the Guru implants the Lord's lotus feet within, and lovingly attunes us to the One Word of the Shabad. ||5||
ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਕਾਢਿਓ ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ॥੬॥
andh koop bikhiaa te kaadtio saach sabad ban aaee |6|
He has lifted me up, and pulled me out of the deep, dark pit of sin; I am attuned to the True Shabad. ||6||
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕਾ ਸਹਸਾ ਚੂਕਾ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਕਤਹੁ ਨ ਧਾਈ ॥੭॥
janam maran kaa sahasaa chookaa baahurr katahu na dhaaee |7|
The fear of birth and death is taken away; I shall never wander again. ||7||
ਨਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਈ ॥੮॥
naam rasaaein ihu man raataa amrit pee tripataaee |8|
This mind is imbued with the sublime elixir of the Naam; drinking in the Ambrosial Nectar, it is satisfied. ||8||
ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਇਆ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਵਸਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥੯॥
santasang mil keeratan gaaeaa nihachal vasiaa jaaee |9|
Joining the Society of the Saints, I sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises; I dwell in the eternal, unchanging place. ||9||
ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਨ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥੧੦॥
poorai gur pooree mat deenee har bin aan na bhaaee |10|
The Perfect Guru has given me the perfect teachings; there is nothing except the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny. ||10||
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਰਕਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੧॥
naam nidhaan paaeaa vaddabhaagee naanak narak na jaaee |11|
I have obtained the treasure of the Naam, by great good fortune; O Nanak, I shall not fall into hell. ||11||
ਘਾਲ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਉਕਤਿ ਨ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਮਾਈ ॥੧੨॥
ghaal siaanap ukat na meree poorai guroo kamaaee |12|
Clever tricks have not worked for me; I shall act according to the Instructions of the Perfect Guru. ||12||
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਸੁਚਿ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਈ ॥੧੩॥
jap tap sanjam such hai soee aape kare karaaee |13|
He is chanting, intense meditation, austere self-discipline and purification. He Himself acts, and causes us to act. ||13||
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਲਾਇ ਤਰਾਈ ॥੧੪॥
putr kalatr mahaa bikhiaa meh gur saachai laae taraaee |14|
In the midst of children and spouse, and utter corruption, the True Guru has carried me across. ||14||
ਅਪਣੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਲੇ ਆਪਿ ਲੀਏ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਈ ॥੧੫॥
apane jeea tai aap samhaale aap lee larr laaee |15|
You Yourself take care of Your beings; You Yourself attach them to the hem of Your robe. ||15||
ਸਾਚ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ਬੇੜਾ ਬਾਂਧਿਆ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਵਾਈ ॥੧੬॥
saach dharam kaa berraa baandhiaa bhavajal paar pavaaee |16|
I have built the boat of true Dharmic faith, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||16||
ਬੇਸੁਮਾਰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੭॥
besumaar beant suaamee naanak bal bal jaaee |17|
The Lord Master is unlimited and endless; Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to Him. ||17||
ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੰਭਉ ਕਲਿ ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਦੀਪਾਈ ॥੧੮॥
akaal moorat ajoonee sanbhau kal andhakaar deepaaee |18|
Being of Immortal Manifestation, He is not born; He is self-existent; He is the Light in the darkness of Kali Yuga. ||18||
ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਜੀਅਨ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਦੇਖਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਅਘਾਈ ॥੧੯॥
antarajaamee jeean kaa daataa dekhat tripat aghaaee |19|
He is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, the Giver of souls; gazing upon Him, I am satisfied and fulfilled. ||19||
ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸਭ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੨੦॥
ekankaar niranjan nirbhau sabh jal thal rahiaa samaaee |20|
He is the One Universal Creator Lord, immaculate and fearless; He is permeating and pervading all the water and the land. ||20||
ਭਗਤਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਭਗਤਾ ਕਉ ਦੀਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਮਾਈ ॥੨੧॥੧॥੬॥
bhagat daan bhagataa kau deenaa har naanak jaachai maaee |21|1|6|
He blesses His devotees with the Gift of devotional worship; Nanak longs for the Lord, O my mother. ||21||1||6||
