The wife, who renounces her husband and remains at home,
ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਆਗੇ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਕੇ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਪੈਠਬ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੬੮॥
tin ko aage svarag ke bheetar paitthab naeh |68|
She gets no reception in the heaven hereafter.(68)

ਬਾਲਕਨ ਬੋਰੌ ਰਾਜ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਹੂੰ ਕੋ ਛੋਰੌ ਔਰ ਭੂਖਨਨ ਤੋਰੋ ਕਠਿਨਾਈ ਐਸੀ ਝਲਿਹੌਂ ॥
baalakan borau raaj indrahoon ko chhorau aauar bhookhanan toro katthinaaee aisee jhalihauan |
‘I will forsake the children and cast off (god) Indra’s Domain. ‘I will break all my ornaments, and get ready to face all sorts of inconveniences.
ਪਾਤ ਫਲ ਖੈਹੌ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਾਪ ਤੇ ਡਰੈਹੌ ਨਾਹਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਪ︀ਯਾਰੇ ਕੇ ਹਿਮਾਚਲ ਮੈ ਗਲਿਹੌਂ ॥
paat fal khaihau singh saap te ddaraihau naeh binaa praan payaare ke himaachal mai galihauan |
‘I will live on leaves and wild fruits, and fight with the reptiles and the lions.
ਜੌਨ ਹੌ ਸੁ ਹੈਹੌ ਮੁਖ ਦੇਖੌ ਪਾਛੇ ਚਲੀ ਜੈਹੌ ਨਾ ਤੌ ਬਿਰਹਾਗਨਿ ਕੀ ਆਗਿ ਬੀਚ ਬਲਿ ਹੌਂ ॥
jauan hau su haihau mukh dekhau paachhe chalee jaihau naa tau birahaagan kee aag beech bal hauan |
‘And without my beloved master, I will rot in Himalayan colds. ‘Come what may be, but, imbued in your vision, I will follow you.
ਕੌਨ ਕਾਜ ਰਾਜਹੂੰ ਕੋ ਸਾਜ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਬਿਨ ਨਾਥ ਜੂ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ਰਹੇ ਰਹੌਂ ਚਲੇ ਚਲਿਹੌਂ ॥੬੯॥
kauan kaaj raajahoon ko saaj mahaaraaj bin naath joo tihaaro rahe rahauan chale chalihauan |69|
‘Failing which I will scorch myself in the fire of isolation. ‘Oh, my master, without you what good is this reign. ‘If, My Master, you go, I will depart to.(69)

ਦੇਸ ਤਜੋ ਕਰਿ ਭੇਸ ਤਪੋ ਧਨ ਕੇਸ ਮਰੋਰਿ ਜਟਾਨਿ ਸਵਾਰੌਂ ॥
des tajo kar bhes tapo dhan kes maror jattaan savaarauan |
‘I will relinquish my country, and, with mated hair, become a yogin (female ascetic).
ਲੇਸ ਕਰੌ ਨ ਕਛੂ ਧਨ ਕੌ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਪਨਿਯਾ ਪਰ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਤਨ ਵਾਰੌਂ ॥
les karau na kachhoo dhan kau prabh kee paniyaa par hvai tan vaarauan |
‘I have no monetary affections and would sacrifice my life on for the sake of your shoes.
ਬਾਲਕ ਕ੍ਰੋਰਿ ਕਰੌ ਇਕ ਓਰ ਸੁ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਛੋਰਿ ਕੈ ਰਾਮ ਸੰਭਾਰੌਂ ॥
baalak kror karau ik or su basatran chhor kai raam sanbhaarauan |
‘Renouncing all my children and the fancy living, I will put my mind in the meditation of God.
ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਕੋ ਰਾਜ ਨਹੀ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਜ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਸਭੈ ਘਰ ਜਾਰੌਂ ॥੭੦॥
eindr ko raaj nahee muhi kaaj binaa mahaaraaj sabhai ghar jaarauan |70|
‘I have nothing to do, even, with god Indra and, without my lord, ‘I will put my dwellings on fire.(70)
ਅੰਗਨ ਮੈ ਸਜਿਹੌ ਭਗਵੈ ਪਟ ਹਾਥ ਬਿਖੈ ਚਿਪਿਯਾ ਗਹਿ ਲੈਹੌਂ ॥
angan mai sajihau bhagavai patt haath bikhai chipiyaa geh laihauan |
‘Adoring the saffron clothes (of an ascetic), I will take a beggingbowl in my hands.
ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਨ ਕਾਨ ਧਰੈ ਅਪਨੇ ਤਵ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਭਿਛਹਿ ਮਾਗਿ ਅਘੈਹੌਂ ॥
mundran kaan dharai apane tav moorat bhichheh maag aghaihauan |
‘With (yogic) ear-rings, I will be contended with begging for your sake.
ਨਾਥ ਚਲੌ ਤੁਮ ਠੌਰ ਜਹਾ ਹਮਹੂੰ ਤਿਹ ਠੌਰ ਬਿਖੈ ਚਲਿ ਜੈਹੋ ॥
naath chalau tum tthauar jahaa hamahoon tih tthauar bikhai chal jaiho |
‘Now I stress it to you that I will never remain in the house and,
ਧਾਮ ਰਹੋ ਨਹਿ ਬਾਤ ਕਹੋ ਪਟ ਫਾਰਿ ਸਭੈ ਅਬ ਜੋਗਿਨ ਹ੍ਵੈਹੌਂ ॥੭੧॥
dhaam raho neh baat kaho patt faar sabhai ab jogin hvaihauan |71|
Tearing off my clothes, will become a yogin.’(71)

ਰਾਨੀ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ਮਹੀਪਤਿ ਸੋਚ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਚਿਤ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
raanee ko roop nihaar maheepat soch bichaar kariyo chit maahee |
Watching the Rani in such a state, the Raja deliberated and said,
ਰਾਜ ਕਰੋ ਸੁਖ ਸੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਤੋਹਿ ਤਜੇ ਲਰਕਾ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
raaj karo sukh so sun sundar tohi taje larakaa mar jaahee |
‘You rule over with bliss. Without you all the children will die.’
ਸੋ ਨ ਮਿਟੈ ਨ ਹਟੈ ਬਨ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਝਾਰਿ ਪਛੋਰਿ ਭਲੇ ਅਵਗਾਹੀ ॥
so na mittai na hattai ban te nrip jhaar pachhor bhale avagaahee |
The Raja tried to entice her but she did not concede.
ਮਾਤ ਪਰੀ ਬਿਲਲਾਤ ਧਰਾ ਪਰ ਨਾਰਿ ਹਠੀ ਹਠ ਛਾਡਤ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੭੨॥
maat paree bilalaat dharaa par naar hatthee hatth chhaaddat naahee |72|
The Raja thought) ‘On one side the mother earth is becoming desperate but the stubborn lady is not surrendering.’(72)

ਜਬ ਰਾਨੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਲਖੀ ਸਤਿ ਜੋਗਿਨਿ ਭਈ ॥

When the Raja found that Rani had really become a yogin,
ਛੋਰਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਧਾਮ ਸੰਗ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਲਈ ॥
chhor na chaliyo dhaam sang apune lee |
He decided to leave the home along with her.
ਧਾਰਿ ਜੋਗ ਕੋ ਭੇਸ ਮਾਤ ਪਹਿ ਆਇਯੋ ॥
dhaar jog ko bhes maat peh aaeiyo |
In ascetic’s garb he came to see his mother.
ਹੋ ਭੇਸ ਜੋਗ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਹੇਰਿ ਸਭਨ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਇਯੋ ॥੭੩॥
ho bhes jog nrip her sabhan dukh paaeiyo |73|
Everybody was astonished to see him dressed as a yogi.(73)

‘Please bid me farewell, to enable me to go to the jungle,
ਬੇਦ ਬਿਧਾਨਨ ਧ︀ਯਾਇ ਹੌ ਜੌ ਭਵ ਕੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੭੪॥
bed bidhaanan dhayaae hau jau bhav ke bhagavaan |74|
‘And, contemplating on the Vedas, meditate on the Lord God,’

‘Oh, my son, the dispenser of comforts, I am sacrifice to You
ਤੁਹਿ ਕ︀ਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨ ਕਹੋ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਦੁਖ ਲਾਗਤ ਹੈ ਮਨ ਕੌ ॥
tuhi kayo kar jaan kaho mukh te at hee dukh laagat hai man kau |
‘How can I ask you to go, it puts me in tremendous adversity.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਹਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਇਤੋ ਸੁਖ ਛਾਡਿ ਕਹਾ ਕਹਿ ਹੌ ਇਨ ਲੋਗਨ ਕੌ ॥
grih te tuhi kaadt ito sukh chhaadd kahaa keh hau in logan kau |
‘When you go away, what would I tell the entire Subject.
ਸੁਨੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਪੂਤ ਕਹੋ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਤੁਹਿ ਕੈਸੇ ਕੈ ਦੇਉ ਬਿਦਾ ਬਨ ਕੌ ॥੭੫॥
sun saach sapoot kaho mukh te tuhi kaise kai deo bidaa ban kau |75|
‘Tell me son, how can I bid you farewell to leave.(75)

ਲੋਗਨ ਕੇ ਕਹਿਬੋ ਅਨੁਸਰਿਯੈ ॥
logan ke kahibo anusariyai |
ਰਾਜ ਜੋਗ ਘਰਿ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਿਯੈ ॥੭੬॥
raaj jog ghar hee meh kariyai |76|
‘Listen to the people and try to attain yogic domain at home.’(76)

Raja had bowed his head before his mother and said,
ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਰਾਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਜੈ ਹੈ ਜਮ ਕੇ ਐਨ ॥੭੭॥
aooch neech raajaa prajaa jai hai jam ke ain |77|
‘The high and the low, and those above the subject, will all go to the domain of death.’(77)

ਸਰਮੈ ਦੀਆ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਕੰਨੀ ਪਾਇ ਜੋਗੀ ਖਿੰਥਾ ਕਰਿ ਤੂ ਦਇਆ ॥
saramai deea mundraa kanee paae jogee khinthaa kar too deaa |
Make humility your ear-rings, Yogi, and compassion your patched coat.
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਬਿਭੂਤਿ ਲਾਇ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਾ ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਣ ਜਿਣਿ ਲਇਆ ॥੧॥
aavan jaan bibhoot laae jogee taa teen bhavan jin leaa |1|
Let coming and going be the ashes you apply to your body, Yogi, and then you shall conquer the three worlds. ||1||
ਐਸੀ ਕਿੰਗੁਰੀ ਵਜਾਇ ਜੋਗੀ ॥

Play that harp, Yogi,
ਜਿਤੁ ਕਿੰਗੁਰੀ ਅਨਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jit kinguree anahad vaajai har siau rahai liv laae |1| rahaau |
which vibrates the unstruck sound current, and remain lovingly absorbed in the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਪਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਝੋਲੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਭੁਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
sat santokh pat kar jholee jogee amrit naam bhugat paaee |
Make truth and contentment your plate and pouch, Yogi; take the Ambrosial Naam as your food.
ਧਿਆਨ ਕਾ ਕਰਿ ਡੰਡਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਜਾਈ ॥੨॥
dhiaan kaa kar ddanddaa jogee singee surat vajaaee |2|
Make meditation your walking stick, Yogi, and make higher consciousness the horn you blow. ||2||
ਮਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਸਣਿ ਬੈਸੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਲਪਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥
man drirr kar aasan bais jogee taa teree kalapanaa jaaee |
Make your stable mind the Yogic posture you sit in, Yogi, and then you shall be rid of your tormenting desires.
ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰੀ ਮਹਿ ਮੰਗਣਿ ਚੜਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥
kaaeaa nagaree meh mangan charreh jogee taa naam palai paaee |3|
Go begging in the village of the body, Yogi, and then, you shall obtain the Naam in your lap. ||3||
ਇਤੁ ਕਿੰਗੁਰੀ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਨਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
eit kinguree dhiaan na laagai jogee naa sach palai paae |
This harp does not center you in meditation, Yogi, nor does it bring the True Name into your lap.
ਇਤੁ ਕਿੰਗੁਰੀ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥
eit kinguree saant na aavai jogee abhimaan na vichahu jaae |4|
This harp does not bring you peace, Yogi, nor eliminate egotism from within you. ||4||
ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ਦੁਇ ਪਤ ਲਾਇ ਜੋਗੀ ਇਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਡੰਡੀ ॥
bhau bhaau due pat laae jogee ihu sareer kar ddanddee |
Make the Fear of God, and the Love of God, the two gourds of your lute, Yogi, and make this body its neck.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਤੰਤੀ ਵਾਜੈ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਖੰਡੀ ॥੫॥
guramukh hoveh taa tantee vaajai in bidh trisanaa khanddee |5|
Become Gurmukh, and then vibrate the strings; in this way, your desires shall depart. ||5||
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੁਝੈ ਸੋ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਹੀਐ ਏਕਸ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
hukam bujhai so jogee kaheeai ekas siau chit laae |
One who understands the Hukam of the Lord's Command is called a Yogi; he links his consciousness to the One Lord.
ਸਹਸਾ ਤੂਟੈ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਏ ॥੬॥
sahasaa toottai niramal hovai jog jugat iv paae |6|
His cynicism is dispelled, and he becomes immaculately pure; this is how he finds the Way of Yoga. ||6||
ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵਦਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
nadaree aavadaa sabh kichh binasai har setee chit laae |
Everything that comes into view shall be destroyed; focus your consciousness on the Lord.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਇਹ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੭॥
satigur naal teree bhaavanee laagai taa ih sojhee paae |7|
Enshrine love for the True Guru, and then you shall obtain this understanding. ||7||
ਏਹੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਭਵਣੁ ਕਰਹਿ ॥
ehu jog na hovai jogee ji kuttanb chhodd parabhavan kareh |
This is not Yoga, O Yogi, to abandon your family and wander around.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਅਪਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਹਹਿ ॥੮॥
grih sareer meh har har naam gur parasaadee apanaa har prabh laheh |8|
The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is within the household of the body. By Guru's Grace, you shall find your Lord God. ||8||
ਇਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਮਿਟੀ ਕਾ ਪੁਤਲਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਇਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਵਡਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
eihu jagat mittee kaa putalaa jogee is meh rog vaddaa trisanaa maaeaa |
This world is a puppet of clay, Yogi; the terrible disease, the desire for Maya is in it.
ਅਨੇਕ ਜਤਨ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਜੋਗੀ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੯॥
anek jatan bhekh kare jogee rog na jaae gavaaeaa |9|
Making all sorts of efforts, and wearing religious robes, Yogi, this disease cannot be cured. ||9||
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਹੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
har kaa naam aaukhadh hai jogee jis no man vasaae |
The Name of the Lord is the medicine, Yogi; the Lord enshrines it in the mind.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥੧੦॥
guramukh hovai soee boojhai jog jugat so paae |10|
One who becomes Gurmukh understands this; he alone finds the Way of Yoga. ||10||
ਜੋਗੈ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਹੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥
jogai kaa maarag bikham hai jogee jis no nadar kare so paae |
The Path of Yoga is very difficult, Yogi; he alone finds it, whom God blesses with His Grace.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥੧੧॥
antar baahar eko vekhai vichahu bharam chukaae |11|
Inside and outside, he sees the One Lord; he eliminates doubt from within himself. ||11||
ਵਿਣੁ ਵਜਾਈ ਕਿੰਗੁਰੀ ਵਾਜੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਸਾ ਕਿੰਗੁਰੀ ਵਜਾਇ ॥
vin vajaaee kinguree vaajai jogee saa kinguree vajaae |
So play the harp which vibrates without being played, Yogi.
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧੨॥੧॥੧੦॥
kahai naanak mukat hoveh jogee saache raheh samaae |12|1|10|
Says Nanak, thus you shall be liberated, Yogi, and remain merged in the True Lord. ||12||1||10||
