ਅਧਿਕ ਨਿਹੋਰੌ ਰਾਇ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਨੀ ਲਈ ਮਨਾਇ ॥
adhik nihorau raae kar raanee lee manaae |
With great humility, Raja got Rani to come to good terms.
ਅਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੀ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਸਕਿਯਾ ਪਾਇ ॥੧੧॥
adhik preet taa so karee bhed na sakiyaa paae |11|
He started to love her even more but did not grasp the mystery.(11)
ਜੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਚਮਕਾ ਨ ਰਹੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਾ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸ ॥
jo nrip chamakaa na rahai triy kaa karat bisvaas |
The ruler who is not diligent, and trusts a woman,
ਅਵਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਰ ਅਟਕਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਰਤ ਤਵਨ ਕੋ ਨਾਸ ॥੧੨॥
avar purakh par attak triy karat tavan ko naas |12|
Who is attached to another person, is ruined through her.(l.2)
ਚਿਤ ਨ ਦੀਜੈ ਆਪਨੋ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਲੇਹੁ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
chit na deejai aapano sabh ko lehu banaae |
Win the confidence of others but never divulge your secrets.
ਤਬ ਸਭ ਕਹ ਜੀਤਤ ਰਹੋ ਰਾਜ ਕਰੋ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥੧੩॥
tab sabh keh jeetat raho raaj karo sukh paae |13|
Prevailing like this, Raja can rule with bliss.(13)(1)

In the country of Marwar a Shah used to live. He dealt with a lot of wealth
ਦੈ ਦੈ ਕਰਜ ਬ੍ਰਯਾਜ ਬਹੁ ਲੇਈ ॥
dai dai karaj brayaaj bahu leee |
ਪੁੰਨ︀ਯ ਦਾਨ ਬਿਪ੍ਰਨ ਕਹ ਦੇਈ ॥੧॥
punay daan bipran keh deee |1|
He used to earn by giving money on interest but he also, considerable donated in charities and alms.(1)
ਸੀਲ ਮਤੀ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
seel matee taa kee triy bhaaree |
ਸੂਰਜ ਲਖੀ ਨ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
sooraj lakhee na chandr nihaaree |
His wife Sheel Manjari was very cool-hearted, she was the embodiment, the Sun and the Moon.
ਨਿਰਖਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਨਿਜੁ ਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਜੀਯੈ ॥
nirakh roop nij pat ko jeeyai |
ਤਿਹ ਨਿਰਖੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਨਿ ਨ ਪੀਯੈ ॥੨॥
tih nirakhe bin paan na peeyai |2|
But she lived by adoring her husband, and would not sip water even without his sight. (2)
ਤਾ ਕੇ ਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
taa ke pat ko roop apaaraa |
ਰੀਝਿ ਦਿਯਾ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ॥
reejh diyaa taa ko karataaraa |
Because her husband was very handsome; he was as if, God’s special creation.
ਉਦੈ ਕਰਨ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਸੁਭ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
audai karan taa kau subh naamaa |
ਸੀਲ ਮੰਜਰੀ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਬਾਮਾ ॥੩॥
seel manjaree taa kee baamaa |3|
His name was Udhe Karan, whereas wife was known as Sheel Manjari.(3)

ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪਮ ਸਾਹੁ ਕੋ ਜੋ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਬਰ ਨਾਰਿ ॥

The Shah’s features were very attractive,
ਲੋਕ ਲਾਜ ਕਹ ਛੋਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਤਾ ਕਹ ਰਹਤ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥੪॥
lok laaj keh chhor kar taa keh rehat nihaar |4|
And without the care of the world, the women would fall for him.(4)

ਏਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕੇ ਇਮਿ ਚਿਤ ਆਈ ॥

ਹੇਰਿ ਰੂਪ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲਲਚਾਈ ॥
her roop taa ko lalachaaee |
Fascinated by his looks, one woman was extremely captivated.
ਕਵਨ ਕਹਾ ਚਿਤ ਚਰਿਤ ਬਨੈਯੈ ॥
kavan kahaa chit charit banaiyai |
ਜੇ ਤੇ ਸਾਹੁ ਮੀਤ ਕਰਿ ਪੈਯੈ ॥੫॥
je te saahu meet kar paiyai |5|
She pondered over what to do to win over the Shah.(5)
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ॥
taa kee triy so preet lagaaee |
ਧਰਮ ਬਹਿਨ ਅਪਨੀ ਠਹਰਾਈ ॥
dharam bahin apanee tthaharaaee |
She created friendship with Shah’s wife and
ਨਈ ਨਈ ਨਿਤਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ॥
nee nee nit kathaa sunaavai |
ਸਾਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕਹ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਿਝਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
saahu triyaa keh adhik rijhaavai |6|
declared her as her righteous sister.(6)
ਸੁਨਿ ਸਾਹੁਨਿ ਤੁਹਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਾਊਾਂ ॥
sun saahun tuhi kathaa sunaaooaan |
ਤੁਮਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਕੋ ਗਰਬੁ ਮਿਟਾਊਾਂ ॥
tumare chit ko garab mittaaooaan |
‘Listen, you the wife of Shah, I tell you tale which would eliminate you ego.
ਜੈਸੋ ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪਤਿ ਤੇਰੌ ॥
jaiso at sundar pat terau |
ਤੈਸੋ ਹੀ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਪਿਯ ਮੇਰੋ ॥੭॥
taiso hee cheenahu piy mero |7|
‘The way your husband is handsome, my husband is very pretty too.(7)

ਤੇਰੇ ਅਰੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਤਿਹ ਭੇਦ ਰੂਪ ਨਹਿ ਕੋਇ ॥

‘There is no unlikeness between your and my husband.
ਉਠਿ ਕਰਿ ਆਪੁ ਬਿਲੋਕਿਯੈ ਤੋਰ ਕਿ ਮੋਰੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥
autth kar aap bilokiyai tor ki moro hoe |8|
‘Let us try and ascertain who is he, whether your husband or mine.(8)

ਤੁਮਰੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਕੈਹੋ ॥
tumaree drisatt agochar kaiho |
‘Today, in the afternoon, I will bring my husband and show him to you.’
ਸਾਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਕਛੁ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
saahu triyeh kachh bhed na paayo |
ਤਿਹ ਦੇਖਨ ਕਹ ਚਿਤ ਲਲਚਾਯੋ ॥੯॥
tih dekhan keh chit lalachaayo |9|
The Shah’s wife did not perceive and she became eager to see her husband.(9)
ਆਪੁ ਅਗਮਨੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥
aap agamane triyaa uchaare |
ਸਾਹੁ ਕੁਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਨਾਰਿ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
saahu kukriaa naar tihaare |
That woman, then, told the .Shah, ‘your wife is of bad character.'
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਸਕਲ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਦਿਖੈਹੋ ॥
taa ko sakal charitr dikhaiho |
ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਮੀਤ ਆਪਨੋ ਕੈਹੋ ॥੧੦॥
tum ko meet aapano kaiho |10|
I will show you her deception, and for that you become my friend.(10)
ਤਬ ਤੁਮ ਗਵਨ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਕੀਜੋ ॥
tab tum gavan hamaaro keejo |
ਨਿਜੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਦੇਖਿ ਜਬ ਲੀਜੋ ॥
nij triy charitr dekh jab leejo |
‘Acting as my friend, you come to me and, then, observe your wife’s vile Chritar,
ਤਹਾ ਠਾਢ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਲੈ ਕਰਿਹੌ ॥
tahaa tthaadt tum ko lai karihau |
ਮੀਤ ਆਯੋ ਤਵ ਤਾਹਿ ਉਚਰਿਹੌ ॥੧੧॥
meet aayo tav taeh ucharihau |11|
‘While making you to stand near me, I will tell her that my husband has come.’(11)

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਰਾਖੈ ਰਾਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
jaa kau raakhai raakhanahaar |
One who is protected by the Protector Lord
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਅੰਗੁ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tis kaa ang kare nirankaar |1| rahaau |
- the Formless Lord is on his side. ||1||Pause||
ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ॥
maat garabh meh agan na johai |
In the mother's womb, the fire does not touch him.
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਪੋਹੈ ॥
kaam krodh lobh mohu na pohai |
Sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment do not affect him.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਪੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
saadhasang japai nirankaar |
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, he meditates on the Formless Lord.
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
nindak kai muhi laagai chhaar |1|
Dust is thrown into the faces of the slanderers. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਕਵਚੁ ਦਾਸ ਕਾ ਸੰਨਾਹੁ ॥
raam kavach daas kaa sanaahu |
The Lord's protective spell is the armor of His slave.
ਦੂਤ ਦੁਸਟ ਤਿਸੁ ਪੋਹਤ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
doot dusatt tis pohat naeh |
The wicked, evil demons cannot even touch him.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਜਾਇ ॥
jo jo garab kare so jaae |
Whoever indulges in egotistical pride, shall waste away to ruin.
ਗਰੀਬ ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥੨॥
gareeb daas kee prabh saranaae |2|
God is the Sanctuary of His humble slave. ||2||
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
jo jo saran peaa har raae |
Whoever enters the Sanctuary of the Sovereign Lord
ਸੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਅਪਣੈ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
so daas rakhiaa apanai kantth laae |
- He saves that slave, hugging him close in His embrace.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਕਰੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
je ko bahut kare ahankaar |
Whoever takes great pride in himself,
ਓਹੁ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਰੁਲਤਾ ਖਾਕੂ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੩॥
ohu khin meh rulataa khaakoo naal |3|
in an instant, shall be like dust mixing with dust. ||3||
ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਹੋਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
hai bhee saachaa hovanahaar |
The True Lord is, and shall always be.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜਾਈਁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ॥
sadaa sadaa jaaee balihaar |
Forever and ever, I am a sacrifice to Him.
ਅਪਣੇ ਦਾਸ ਰਖੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
apane daas rakhe kirapaa dhaar |
Granting His Mercy, He saves His slaves.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰ ॥੪॥੧੮॥੨੦॥
naanak ke prabh praan adhaar |4|18|20|
God is the Support of Nanak's breath of life. ||4||18||20||

ਅਚਰਜ ਕਥਾ ਮਹਾ ਅਨੂਪ ॥

Wondrous and beautiful is the description of the beauty of the Supreme Soul,
ਪ੍ਰਾਤਮਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਾ ਰੂਪੁ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
praatamaa paarabraham kaa roop | rahaau |
The Supreme Lord God. ||Pause||
ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਬੂਢਾ ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਬਾਲਾ ॥
naa ihu boodtaa naa ihu baalaa |
He is not old; He is not young.
ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਮ ਜਾਲਾ ॥
naa is dookh nahee jam jaalaa |
He is not in pain; He is not caught in Death's noose.
ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
naa ihu binasai naa ihu jaae |
He does not die; He does not go away.
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
aad jugaadee rahiaa samaae |1|
In the beginning, and throughout the ages, He is permeating everywhere. ||1||
ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਉਸਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਇਸੁ ਸੀਤੁ ॥
naa is usan nahee is seet |
He is not hot; He is not cold.
ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਦੁਸਮਨੁ ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਮੀਤੁ ॥
naa is dusaman naa is meet |
He has no enemy; He has no friend.
ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਹਰਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਇਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥
naa is harakh nahee is sog |
He is not happy; He is not sad.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਇਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਕਰਨੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥੨॥
sabh kichh is kaa ihu karanai jog |2|
Everything belongs to Him; He can do anything. ||2||
ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਬਾਪੁ ਨਹੀ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
naa is baap nahee is maaeaa |
He has no father; He has no mother.
ਇਹੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਹੋਤਾ ਆਇਆ ॥
eihu aparanpar hotaa aaeaa |
He is beyond the beyond, and has always been so.
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਕਾ ਇਸੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
paap pun kaa is lep na laagai |
He is not affected by virtue or vice.
ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਜਾਗੈ ॥੩॥
ghatt ghatt antar sad hee jaagai |3|
Deep within each and every heart, He is always awake and aware. ||3||
ਤੀਨਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਇਕ ਸਕਤਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
teen gunaa ik sakat upaaeaa |
From the three qualities, the one mechanism of Maya was produced.
ਮਹਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
mahaa maaeaa taa kee hai chhaaeaa |
The great Maya is only His shadow.
ਅਛਲ ਅਛੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
achhal achhed abhed deaal |
He is undeceivable, impenetrable, unfathomable and merciful.
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਦਾ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥
deen deaal sadaa kirapaal |
He is merciful to the meek, forever compassionate.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
taa kee gat mit kachhoo na paae |
His state and limits cannot ever be known.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੯॥੨੧॥
naanak taa kai bal bal jaae |4|19|21|
Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to Him. ||4||19||21||
