ਭਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਜਨ ਜਾਗੇ ॥

bhayo praat sabh hee jan jaage |

ਅਪਨੇ ਅਪਨੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਲਾਗੇ ॥

apane apane kaaraj laage |

As the Sun rose, people awoke and went to their respective occupations.

ਰਾਇ ਭਵਨ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਆਯੋ ॥

raae bhavan te baahar aayo |

ਸਭਾ ਬੈਠ ਦੀਵਾਨ ਲਗਾਯੋ ॥੧॥

sabhaa baitth deevaan lagaayo |1|

The Raja came out of his palace and seated on his throne.(1)

ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਭਏ ਤਵਨੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਹਿਤ ਤਜਿ ਰਿਸ ਉਪਜਾਇ ॥

praat bhe tavanai triyaa hit taj ris upajaae |

Next day, early in the morning that lady got up,

ਪਨੀ ਪਾਮਰੀ ਜੋ ਹੁਤੇ ਸਭਹਿਨ ਦਏ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥੨॥

panee paamaree jo hute sabhahin de dikhaae |2|

And displayed the shoes and the robe publicly.(2)

ਰਾਇ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥

raae sabhaa meh bachan uchaare |

ਪਨੀ ਪਾਮਰੀ ਹਰੇ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥

panee paamaree hare hamaare |

The Raja declared in the court that somebody had stolen his shoes and robe.

ਤਾਹਿ ਸਿਖ︀ਯ ਜੋ ਹਮੈ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥

taeh sikhay jo hamai bataavai |

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕਾਲ ਨਿਕਟ ਨਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥੩॥

taa te kaal nikatt neh aavai |3|

‘The Sikh, who will find them out for me, will be saved from the clutches of Death.’(3)

ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਗੁਰ ਬਕ੍ਰਤ ਤੇ ਸਿਖ︀ਯ ਨ ਸਕੇ ਦੁਰਾਇ ॥

bachan sunat gur bakrat te sikhay na sake duraae |

Listening to their Guru, the Sikh could not hide (the secret),

ਪਨੀ ਪਾਮਰੀ ਕੇ ਸਹਿਤ ਸੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਦਈ ਬਤਾਇ ॥੪॥

panee paamaree ke sahit so triy dee bataae |4|

And they told about the woman, the shoe and the robe.(4)

ਤਬੈ ਰਾਇ ਯੌ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥

tabai raae yau bachan uchaare |

ਗਹਿ ਲ︀ਯਾਵਹੁ ਤਿਹ ਤੀਰ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥

geh layaavahu tih teer hamaare |

The Raja ordered thus, ‘Go and get her and also bring my shoes and robe.

ਪਨੀ ਪਾਮਰੀ ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਐਯਹੁ ॥

panee paamaree sang lai aiyahu |

ਮੋਰਿ ਕਹੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਨ ਦੈਯਹੁ ॥੫॥

mor kahe bin traas na daiyahu |5|

‘Bring her straight to me without reprimanding her.’(5)

ਸੁਨਤ ਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਬਚਨ ਕੋ ਲੋਗ ਪਰੇ ਅਰਰਾਇ ॥

sunat raae ke bachan ko log pare araraae |

Lmmediately, harkening to the Raja, the people hastened to her,

ਪਨੀ ਪਾਮਰੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸਹਿਤ ਲ︀ਯਾਵਤ ਭਏ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੬॥

panee paamaree triy sahit layaavat bhe banaae |6|

Brought the woman along with the shoes and the robe.(6)

ਕਹੁ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਕਿਹ ਕਾਜ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਤੈ ਹਰੇ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥

kahu sundar kih kaaj basatr tai hare hamaare |

(Raja asked,) ‘Tell me pretty lady, why did you steal my garments?

ਦੇਖ ਭਟਨ ਕੀ ਭੀਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਉਪਜ︀ਯੋ ਨਹਿ ਥਾਰੇ ॥

dekh bhattan kee bheer traas upajayo neh thaare |

‘Were you not afraid of this group of brave-men (watchmen)?

ਜੋ ਚੋਰੀ ਜਨ ਕਰੈ ਕਹੌ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਕ︀ਯਾ ਕਰਿਯੈ ॥

jo choree jan karai kahau taa kau kayaa kariyai |

‘You tell me, the one who commits theft, what should be one’s punishments.

ਹੋ ਨਾਰਿ ਜਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਟਰੌ ਨਾਤਰ ਜਿਯ ਤੇ ਤੁਹਿ ਮਰਿਯੈ ॥੭॥

ho naar jaan kai ttarau naatar jiy te tuhi mariyai |7|

‘Any way, in consideration of your being a lady, I let you go free, otherwise I would have executed you.’(7)

ਪਰ ਪਿਯਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਪਰ ਗਈ ਨੈਨ ਰਹੀ ਨਿਹੁਰਾਇ ॥

par piyaree mukh par gee nain rahee nihuraae |

Her face became pale, and her eyes remained wide open.

ਧਰਕ ਧਰਕ ਛਤਿਯਾ ਕਰੈ ਬਚਨ ਨ ਭਾਖ︀ਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥੮॥

dharak dharak chhatiyaa karai bachan na bhaakhayo jaae |8|

With extreme heart-palpitation, she was dumbfounded.(8)

ਹਮ ਪੂਛਹਿਗੇ ਯਾਹਿ ਨ ਤੁਮ ਕਛੁ ਭਾਖਿਯੋ ॥

ham poochhahige yaeh na tum kachh bhaakhiyo |

(Raja) ‘I am asking you, and you are keeping quiet.

ਯਾਹੀ ਕੈ ਘਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਭਲੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਰਾਖਿਯੋ ॥

yaahee kai ghar maeh bhalee bidh raakhiyo |

‘Alright, I will take you to my house, and keeping you comfortably there,

ਨਿਰਨੌ ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ਏਕ ਇਕਾਤ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥

niranau kar hai ek ikaat bulaae kai |

‘I will talk to you in seclusion,

ਹੋ ਤਬ ਦੈਹੈ ਇਹ ਜਾਨ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੯॥

ho tab daihai ih jaan hridai sukh paae kai |9|

‘After that you will be let free.’(9)

ਸਕਲ ਕਥਾ ਕਹਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੁਨਾਈ ॥

sakal kathaa keh taeh sunaaee |

Next morning he called the lady, and talked over whole situation.

ਤੁਮ ਕੁਪਿ ਹਮ ਪਰਿ ਚਰਿਤ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥

tum kup ham par charit banaayo |

ਹਮਹੂੰ ਤੁਮ ਕਹ ਚਰਿਤ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ ॥੧੦॥

hamahoon tum keh charit dikhaayo |10|

‘Getting angry on me you tried to caste a net on me but on the contrary I put you in a dilemma.’(10)

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬੰਦਿ ਤੇ ਛੋਰਿਯੋ ॥

taa ko bhraat band te chhoriyo |

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਿਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਨਿਹੋਰਿਯੋ ॥

bhaat bhaat tih triyeh nihoriyo |

‘You were let out on the pretension of my brother,’ the woman presented distinctive reasoning.

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਐਸ ਜਿਯ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਧਰਿਯਹੁ ॥

bahur ais jiy kabahoon na dhariyahu |

ਮੋ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਛਿਮਾਪਨ ਕਰਿਯਹੁ ॥੧੧॥

mo aparaadh chhimaapan kariyahu |11|

‘Never try to attempt such trickery ever again and this time I pardon your transgression.’(11)

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਏਕਮ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥

ekam ekankaar niraalaa |

The First Day: The One Universal Creator is unique,

ਅਮਰੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਲਾ ॥

amar ajonee jaat na jaalaa |

immortal, unborn, beyond social class or involvement.

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ॥

agam agochar roop na rekhiaa |

He is inaccessible and unfathomable, with no form or feature.

ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ॥

khojat khojat ghatt ghatt dekhiaa |

Searching, searching, I have seen Him in each and every heart.

ਜੋ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥

jo dekh dikhaavai tis kau bal jaaee |

I am a sacrifice to one who sees, and inspires others to see Him.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥

gur parasaad param pad paaee |1|

By Guru's Grace, I have obtained the supreme status. ||1||

ਕਿਆ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸੈ ॥

kiaa jap jaapau bin jagadeesai |

Whose Name should I chant, and meditate on, except the Lord of the Universe?

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਦੀਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

gur kai sabad mehal ghar deesai |1| rahaau |

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is revealed within the home of one's own heart. ||1||Pause||

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਲਗੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੇ ॥

doojai bhaae lage pachhutaane |

The Second Day: Those who are in love with another, come to regret and repent.

ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੇ ॥

jam dar baadhe aavan jaane |

The are tied up at Death's door, and continue coming and going.

ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਵਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

kiaa lai aaveh kiaa le jaeh |

What have they brought, and what will they take with them when they go?

ਸਿਰਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

sir jamakaal si chottaa khaeh |

The Messenger of Death looms over their heads, and they endure his beating.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਕੋਇ ॥

bin gurasabad na chhoottas koe |

Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, no one finds release.

ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਕੀਨੑੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

paakhandd keenai mukat na hoe |2|

Practicing hypocrisy, no one finds liberation. ||2||

ਆਪੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੀਆ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ॥

aape sach keea kar jorr |

The True Lord Himself created the universe, joining the elements together.

ਅੰਡਜ ਫੋੜਿ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਿ ॥

anddaj forr jorr vichhorr |

Breaking the cosmic egg, He united, and separated.

ਧਰਤਿ ਅਕਾਸੁ ਕੀਏ ਬੈਸਣ ਕਉ ਥਾਉ ॥

dharat akaas kee baisan kau thaau |

He made the earth and the sky into places to live.

ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨੰਤੁ ਕੀਏ ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ॥

raat dinant kee bhau bhaau |

He created day and night, fear and love.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਏ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖਣਹਾਰਾ ॥

jin kee kar vekhanahaaraa |

The One who created the Creation, also watches over it.

ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

avar na doojaa sirajanahaaraa |3|

There is no other Creator Lord. ||3||

ਤ੍ਰਿਤੀਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸਾ ॥

triteea brahamaa bisan mahesaa |

The Third Day: He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva,

ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵ ਉਪਾਏ ਵੇਸਾ ॥

devee dev upaae vesaa |

the gods, goddesses and various manifestations.

ਜੋਤੀ ਜਾਤੀ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

jotee jaatee ganat na aavai |

The lights and forms cannot be counted.

ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਸੋ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

jin saajee so keemat paavai |

The One who fashioned them, knows their value.

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥

keemat paae rahiaa bharapoor |

He evaluates them, and totally pervades them.

ਕਿਸੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੪॥

kis nerrai kis aakhaa door |4|

Who is close, and who is far away? ||4||

ਚਉਥਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦਾ ॥

chauth upaae chaare bedaa |

The Fourth Day: He created the four Vedas,

ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰੇ ਬਾਣੀ ਭੇਦਾ ॥

khaanee chaare baanee bhedaa |

the four sources of creation, and distinct forms of speech.

ਅਸਟ ਦਸਾ ਖਟੁ ਤੀਨਿ ਉਪਾਏ ॥

asatt dasaa khatt teen upaae |

He created the eighteen Puraanas, the six Shaastras and the three qualities.

ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥

so boojhai jis aap bujhaae |

He alone understands, whom the Lord causes to understand.

ਤੀਨਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਚਉਥੈ ਵਾਸਾ ॥

teen samaavai chauthai vaasaa |

One who overcomes the three qualities, dwells in the fourth state.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੫॥

pranavat naanak ham taa ke daasaa |5|

Prays Nanak, I am his slave. ||5||

ਪੰਚਮੀ ਪੰਚ ਭੂਤ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥

panchamee panch bhoot betaalaa |

The Fifth Day: The five elements are demons.

ਆਪਿ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥

aap agochar purakh niraalaa |

The Lord Himself is unfathomable and detached.

ਇਕਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਖੇ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਸੇ ॥

eik bhram bhookhe moh piaase |

Some are gripped by doubt, hunger, emotional attachment and desire.

ਇਕਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੇ ॥

eik ras chaakh sabad tripataase |

Some taste the sublime essence of the Shabad, and are satisfied.

ਇਕਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਮਰਿ ਧੂਰਿ ॥

eik rang raate ik mar dhoor |

Some are imbued with the Lord's Love, while some die, and are reduced to dust.

ਇਕਿ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੬॥

eik dar ghar saachai dekh hadoor |6|

Some attain the Court and the Mansion of the True Lord, and behold Him, ever-present. ||6||

ਝੂਠੇ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਉ ॥

jhootthe kau naahee pat naau |

The false one has no honor or fame;

ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਸੂਚਾ ਕਾਲਾ ਕਾਉ ॥

kabahu na soochaa kaalaa kaau |

like the black crow, he never becomes pure.

ਪਿੰਜਰਿ ਪੰਖੀ ਬੰਧਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥

pinjar pankhee bandhiaa koe |

He is like the bird, imprisoned in a cage;

ਛੇਰੀਂ ਭਰਮੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

chhereen bharamai mukat na hoe |

he paces back and forth behind the bars, but he is not released.

ਤਉ ਛੂਟੈ ਜਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਛਡਾਏ ॥

tau chhoottai jaa khasam chhaddaae |

He alone is emancipated, whom the Lord and Master emancipates.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥੭॥

guramat mele bhagat drirraae |7|

He follows the Guru's Teachings, and enshrines devotional worship. ||7||

ਖਸਟੀ ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਜੇ ॥

khasattee khatt darasan prabh saaje |

The Sixth Day: God organized the six systems of Yoga.

ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਵਾਜੇ ॥

anahad sabad niraalaa vaaje |

The unstruck sound current of the Shabad vibrates of itself.

ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ॥

je prabh bhaavai taa mehal bulaavai |

If God wills it so, then one is summoned to the Mansion of His Presence.

ਸਬਦੇ ਭੇਦੇ ਤਉ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

sabade bhede tau pat paavai |

One who is pierced through by the Shabad, obtains honor.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਸ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥

kar kar ves khapeh jal jaaveh |

Those who wear religious robes burn, and are ruined.

ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ॥੮॥

saachai saache saach samaaveh |8|

Through Truth, the truthful ones merge into the True Lord. ||8||

ਸਪਤਮੀ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਰੀਰਿ ॥

sapatamee sat santokh sareer |

The Seventh Day: When the body is imbued with Truth and contentment,

ਸਾਤ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਭਰੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨੀਰਿ ॥

saat samund bhare niramal neer |

the seven seas within are filled with the Immaculate Water.

ਮਜਨੁ ਸੀਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

majan seel sach ridai veechaar |

Bathing in good conduct, and contemplating the True Lord within the heart,

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥

gur kai sabad paavai sabh paar |

one obtains the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and carries everyone across.

ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਉ ਭਾਇ ॥

man saachaa mukh saachau bhaae |

With the True Lord in the mind, and the True Lord lovingly on one's lips,

ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੯॥

sach neesaanai tthaak na paae |9|

one is blessed with the banner of Truth, and meets with no obstructions. ||9||

ਅਸਟਮੀ ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਾਧੈ ॥

asattamee asatt sidh budh saadhai |

The Eighth Day: The eight miraculous powers come when one subdues his own mind,

ਸਚੁ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਅਰਾਧੈ ॥

sach nihakeval karam araadhai |

and contemplates the True Lord through pure actions.

ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਬਿਸਰਾਉ ॥

paun paanee aganee bisaraau |

Forget the three qualities of wind, water and fire,

ਤਹੀ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਨਾਉ ॥

tahee niranjan saacho naau |

and concentrate on the pure True Name.

ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

tis meh manooaa rahiaa liv laae |

That human who remains lovingly focused on the Lord,

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੧੦॥

pranavat naanak kaal na khaae |10|

prays Nanak, shall not be consumed by death. ||10||

ਨਾਉ ਨਉਮੀ ਨਵੇ ਨਾਥ ਨਵ ਖੰਡਾ ॥

The Ninth Day: The Name is the supreme almighty Master of the nine masters of Yoga,

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਥੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਲਵੰਡਾ ॥

ghatt ghatt naath mahaa balavanddaa |

The nine realms of the earth, and each and every heart.

ਆਈ ਪੂਤਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਸਾਰਾ ॥

aaee pootaa ihu jag saaraa |

This whole world is the child of Maya.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਆਦਿ ਰਖਵਾਰਾ ॥

prabh aades aad rakhavaaraa |

I bow in submission to God, my Protector from the very beginning of time.

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਗੁ ॥

aad jugaadee hai bhee hog |

He was in the beginning, He has been throughout the ages, He is now, and He shall always be.

ਓਹੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਕਰਣੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥੧੧॥

ohu aparanpar karanai jog |11|

He is unlimited, and capable of doing everything. ||11||

ਦਸਮੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥

dasamee naam daan isanaan |

The Tenth Day: Meditate on the Naam, give to charity, and purify yourself.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਮਜਨੁ ਸਚਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

anadin majan sachaa gun giaan |

Night and day, bathe in spiritual wisdom and the Glorious Virtues of the True Lord.

ਸਚਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥

sach mail na laagai bhram bhau bhaagai |

Truth cannot be polluted; doubt and fear run away from it.

ਬਿਲਮੁ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਕਾਚੈ ਤਾਗੈ ॥

bilam na toottas kaachai taagai |

The flimsy thread breaks in an instant.

ਜਿਉ ਤਾਗਾ ਜਗੁ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣਹੁ ॥

jiau taagaa jag evai jaanahu |

Know that the world is just like this thread.

ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣਹੁ ॥੧੨॥

asathir cheet saach rang maanahu |12|

Your consciousness shall become steady and stable, enjoying the Love of the True Lord. ||12||

ਏਕਾਦਸੀ ਇਕੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਵੈ ॥

ekaadasee ik ridai vasaavai |

The Eleventh Day: Enshrine the One Lord within your heart.

ਹਿੰਸਾ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥

hinsaa mamataa mohu chukaavai |

Eradicate cruelty, egotism and emotional attachment.

ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਬ੍ਰਤੁ ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨੈ ॥

fal paavai brat aatam cheenai |

Earn the fruitful rewards, by observing the fast of knowing your own self.

ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਰਾਚਿ ਤਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਨੈ ॥

paakhandd raach tat nahee beenai |

One who is engrossed in hypocrisy, does not see the true essence.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰੁ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ॥

niramal niraahaar nihakeval |

The Lord is immaculate, self-sustaining and unattached.

ਸੂਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਮਲੁ ॥੧੩॥

soochai saache naa laagai mal |13|

The Pure, True Lord cannot be polluted. ||13||

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਏਕੋ ਏਕਾ ॥

jeh dekhau teh eko ekaa |

Wherever I look, I see the One Lord there.

ਹੋਰਿ ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਏ ਵੇਕੋ ਵੇਕਾ ॥

hor jeea upaae veko vekaa |

He created the other beings, of many and various kinds.

ਫਲੋਹਾਰ ਕੀਏ ਫਲੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

falohaar kee fal jaae |

Eating only fruits, one loses the fruits of life.

ਰਸ ਕਸ ਖਾਏ ਸਾਦੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

ras kas khaae saad gavaae |

Eating only delicacies of various sorts, one loses the true taste.

ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਪਟੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥

koorrai laalach lapattai lapattaae |

In fraud and greed, people are engrossed and entangled.

ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੧੪॥

chhoottai guramukh saach kamaae |14|

The Gurmukh is emancipated, practicing Truth. ||14||

ਦੁਆਦਸਿ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਅਉਧੂਤਾ ॥

duaadas mudraa man aaudhootaa |

The Twelfth Day: One whose mind is not attached to the twelve signs,

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜਾਗਹਿ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਸੂਤਾ ॥

ahinis jaageh kabeh na sootaa |

remains awake day and night, and never sleeps.

ਜਾਗਤੁ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

jaagat jaag rahai liv laae |

He remains awake and aware, lovingly centered on the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥

gur parachai tis kaal na khaae |

With faith in the Guru, he is not consumed by death.

ਅਤੀਤ ਭਏ ਮਾਰੇ ਬੈਰਾਈ ॥

ateet bhe maare bairaaee |

Those who become detached, and conquer the five enemies

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਹ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੧੫॥

pranavat naanak teh liv laaee |15|

- prays Nanak, they are lovingly absorbed in the Lord. ||15||

ਦੁਆਦਸੀ ਦਇਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

duaadasee deaa daan kar jaanai |

The Twelfth Day: Know, and practice, compassion and charity.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤੋ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥

baahar jaato bheetar aanai |

Bring your out-going mind back home.

ਬਰਤੀ ਬਰਤ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਹਕਾਮ ॥

baratee barat rahai nihakaam |

Observe the fast of remaining free of desire.

ਅਜਪਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮ ॥

ajapaa jaap japai mukh naam |

Chant the unchanted Chant of the Naam with your mouth.

ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

teen bhavan meh eko jaanai |

Know that the One Lord is contained in the three worlds.

ਸਭਿ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੧੬॥

sabh such sanjam saach pachhaanai |16|

Purity and self-discipline are all contained in knowing the Truth. ||16||

ਤੇਰਸਿ ਤਰਵਰ ਸਮੁਦ ਕਨਾਰੈ ॥

teras taravar samud kanaarai |

The Thirteenth Day: He is like a tree on the sea-shore.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੂਲੁ ਸਿਖਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰੈ ॥

amrit mool sikhar liv taarai |

But his roots can become immortal, if his mind is attuned to the Lord's Love.

ਡਰ ਡਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਬੂਡੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

ddar ddar marai na booddai koe |

Then, he will not die of fear or anxiety, and he will never drown.

ਨਿਡਰੁ ਬੂਡਿ ਮਰੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥

niddar boodd marai pat khoe |

Without the Fear of God, he drowns and dies, and loses his honor.

ਡਰ ਮਹਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

ddar meh ghar ghar meh ddar jaanai |

With the Fear of God in his heart, and his heart in the Fear of God, he knows God.

ਤਖਤਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੈ ॥੧੭॥

takhat nivaas sach man bhaanai |17|

He sits on the throne, and becomes pleasing to the Mind of the True Lord. ||17||

ਚਉਦਸਿ ਚਉਥੇ ਥਾਵਹਿ ਲਹਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

chaudas chauthe thaaveh leh paavai |

The Fourteenth Day: One who enters into the fourth state,

ਰਾਜਸ ਤਾਮਸ ਸਤ ਕਾਲ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

raajas taamas sat kaal samaavai |

overcomes time, and the three qualities of raajas, taamas and satva.

ਸਸੀਅਰ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

saseear kai ghar soor samaavai |

Then the sun enters into the house of the moon,

ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

jog jugat kee keemat paavai |

and one knows the value of the technology of Yoga.

ਚਉਦਸਿ ਭਵਨ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਸਮਾਏ ॥

chaudas bhavan paataal samaae |

He remains lovingly focused on God, who is permeating the fourteen worlds,

ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੧੮॥

khandd brahamandd rahiaa liv laae |18|

The nether regions of the underworld, the galaxies and solar systems. ||18||

ਅਮਾਵਸਿਆ ਚੰਦੁ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਗੈਣਾਰਿ ॥

amaavasiaa chand gupat gainaar |

Amaavas - The Night of the New Moon: The moon is hidden in the sky.

ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

boojhahu giaanee sabad beechaar |

O wise one, understand and contemplate the Word of the Shabad.

ਸਸੀਅਰੁ ਗਗਨਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਈ ॥

saseear gagan jot tihu loee |

The moon in the sky illuminates the three worlds.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥

kar kar vekhai karataa soee |

Creating the creation, the Creator beholds it.

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

gur te deesai so tis hee maeh |

One who sees, through the Guru, merges into Him.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧੯॥

manamukh bhoole aaveh jaeh |19|

The self-willed manmukhs are deluded, coming and going in reincarnation. ||19||

ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਥਾਪਿ ਥਿਰੁ ਥਾਨਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥

ghar dar thaap thir thaan suhaavai |

One who establishes his home within his own heart, obtains the most beautiful, permanent place.

ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

aap pachhaanai jaa satigur paavai |

One comes to understand his own self, when he finds the True Guru.

ਜਹ ਆਸਾ ਤਹ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥

jeh aasaa teh binas binaasaa |

Wherever there is hope, there is destruction and desolation.

ਫੂਟੈ ਖਪਰੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਨਸਾ ॥

foottai khapar dubidhaa manasaa |

The bowl of duality and selfishness breaks.

ਮਮਤਾ ਜਾਲ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥

mamataa jaal te rahai udaasaa |

Prays Nanak, I am the slave of that one,

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੨੦॥੧॥

pranavat naanak ham taa ke daasaa |20|1|

Who remains detached amidst the traps of attachment. ||20||1||
