ਕਥਾ ਚਤੁਰਦਸ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਬਰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੌ ਕਹੀ ਬਖਾਨਿ ॥
kathaa chaturadas mantr bar nrip sau kahee bakhaan |
Thus the Minister narrated the fourteenth parable to the Raja.
ਸੁਨਤ ਰੀਝਿ ਕੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰਹੇ ਦਿਯੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਿਹ ਦਾਨ ॥੧॥
sunat reejh ke nrip rahe diyo adhik tih daan |1|
The Raja was extremely pleased and made the Minister very rich by giving him money.(l)
ਏਕ ਬਿਮਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਭਾਨ ਕੀ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਪੁਰ ਬੀਚ ॥

A widow used to live in the city of Ramdaspur.
ਬਹੁ ਪੁਰਖਨ ਸੌ ਰਤਿ ਕਰੈ ਊਚ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਨੀਚ ॥੨॥
bahu purakhan sau rat karai aooch na jaanai neech |2|
She would offer love to various people with no discrimination of caste.(2)
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਪਤਿ ਮਰਿ ਗਯੋ ਜਬੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਅਵਧਾਨ ॥
taa ko pat mar gayo jabai taeh rahiyo avadhaan |
Her spouse had died soon after she became pregnant and, shy of
ਅਧਿਕ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਭੀਤਰ ਡਰੀ ਲੋਕ ਲਾਜ ਜਿਯ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੩॥
adhik hridai bheetar ddaree lok laaj jiy jaan |3|
People’s abashment, she was worried.(3)

ਭਾਨਮਤੀ ਤਿਹਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖਨਿਯਤ ॥

ਬਡੀ ਛਿਨਾਰਿ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਜਨਿਯਤ ॥
baddee chhinaar jagat mai janiyat |
Her name was Bhaanmati and she was known as a charlatan.
ਜਬ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਰਹਿ ਗਯੋ ਅਧਾਨਾ ॥
jab taa kau reh gayo adhaanaa |
ਤਬ ਅਬਲਾ ਕੋ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਡਰਾਨਾ ॥੪॥
tab abalaa ko hridai ddaraanaa |4|
She was very much apprehensive of her pregnancy.( 4)

ਤਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ ਹੂ ਕਿਯ ਬਹੁ ਪੁਰਖ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥

She conducted a sacrificial feast and called numerous people.
ਤਿਨ ਦੇਖਤ ਰਹੀ ਸੋਇ ਸੁ ਖਾਟ ਡਸਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
tin dekhat rahee soe su khaatt ddasaae kai |
Before their arrival, she had put herself to sleep on a bed.
ਚਮਕਿ ਠਾਢ ਉਠਿ ਭਈ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਮਨ ਆਨਿ ਕੈ ॥
chamak tthaadt utth bhee charitr man aan kai |
She stood up abruptly with deceiving intention,
ਹੋ ਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ਜਾਨਿ ਕੈ ॥੫॥
ho pat ko naam bichaar uchaariyo jaan kai |5|
And started to cry aloud repeating the name of her husband.(5)

ਜਾ ਦਿਨ ਮੋਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਮਰੇ ਮੋ ਸੌ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
jaa din more pat mare mo sau kahiyo bulaae |
‘The day my husband expired, he told me,
ਜੇ ਅਬ ਤੂੰ ਮੋ ਸੌ ਜਰੈ ਪਰੈ ਨਰਕ ਮੋ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
je ab toon mo sau jarai parai narak mo jaae |6|
“If you immolate with my (dead) body you will go to hell.”(6)

ਭਾਨ ਲਰਿਕਵਾ ਰਹੈ ਸੇਵ ਤਿਹ ਕੀਜਿਯੈ ॥
bhaan larikavaa rahai sev tih keejiyai |
“Bhanu (my son) is still a child,
ਪਾਲਿ ਪੋਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਡੋ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਜਿਯੈ ॥
paal pos kar taeh baddo kar leejiyai |
You will have to look after him and bring him up.
ਆਪੁ ਜਦਿਨ ਵਹ ਖੈ ਹੈ ਖਾਟਿ ਕਮਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
aap jadin veh khai hai khaatt kamaae kai |
“When he starts to earn his livelihood,
ਹੋ ਤਦਿਨ ਸੁਪਨਿ ਤੁਹਿ ਦੈਹੋ ਹੌ ਹੂੰ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥੭॥
ho tadin supan tuhi daiho hau hoon aae kai |7|
I will come, then, and meet you in the dream.”(7)

ਭਾਨ ਕਰੋ ਕਰਤੇ ਬਡੋ ਸੁਪਨ ਦਿਯੋ ਪਤਿ ਆਇ ॥

‘Bhanu is now big enough now and my husband has come into my dream.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਹੌ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਜਰਤ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪੁਰ ਜਾਇ ॥੮॥
taa te hau har raae ke jarat keerat pur jaae |8|
‘Consequently I am going to Kiratpur of (Guru) Har Rai and immolate myself.(8)

ਲੋਗ ਅਟਕਿ ਬਹੁ ਰਹੇ ਨ ਤਿਨ ਬਚ ਮਾਨਿਯੋ ॥

People tried to dissuade her but she did not listen to anyone.
ਧਨੁ ਲੁਟਾਇ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੀ ਘਨੋ ਹਠ ਠਾਨਿਯੋ ॥
dhan luttaae utth chalee ghano hatth tthaaniyo |
Stubbornly she laundered all her wealth and commenced her mission.
ਰਾਮ ਦਾਸ ਪੁਰ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪੁਰ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥
raam daas pur chhaadd keerat pur aae kai |
Leaving Ramdaspur, she came to Keeratpur and with the beat of the
ਹੋ ਇਕ ਪਗ ਠਾਢੇ ਜਰੀ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਬਜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੯॥
ho ik pag tthaadte jaree mridang bajaae kai |9|
Drum, and standing on one leg she immolated herself.(9)

ਬਹੁ ਲੋਗਨੁ ਦੇਖਤ ਜਰੀ ਇਕ ਪਗ ਠਾਢੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
bahu logan dekhat jaree ik pag tthaadtee soe |
When many people saw her immolating herself.
ਹੇਰਿ ਰੀਝਿ ਰੀਝਿਕ ਰਹੇ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਜਾਨਤ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੦॥
her reejh reejhik rahe bhed na jaanat koe |10|
They were satisfied with her sincerity but they did not realize the truth.(10)
ਸਕਲ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਜੇ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸ ॥
sakal jagat mai je purakh triy ko karat bisvaas |
One who trust (such) a woman,
ਸਾਤਿ ਦਿਵਸ ਭੀਤਰ ਤੁਰਤੁ ਹੋਤ ਤਵਨ ਕੋ ਨਾਸ ॥੧੧॥
saat divas bheetar turat hot tavan ko naas |11|
Within seven days he destroys himself.(11)
ਜੋ ਨਰ ਕਾਹੂ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕੋ ਦੇਤ ਆਪਨੋ ਚਿਤ ॥
jo nar kaahoo triyaa ko det aapano chit |
One who discloses his secret to (such) a lady,
ਤਾ ਨਰ ਕੌ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਹੋਤ ਖੁਆਰੀ ਨਿਤ ॥੧੨॥
taa nar kau ih jagat mai hot khuaaree nit |12|
He always degrades himself.(l2)

ਸੁਲਹੀ ਤੇ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਰਾਖੁ ॥
sulahee te naaraaein raakh |
The Lord saved me from Sulhi Khan.
ਸੁਲਹੀ ਕਾ ਹਾਥੁ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਸੁਲਹੀ ਹੋਇ ਮੂਆ ਨਾਪਾਕੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sulahee kaa haath kahee na pahuchai sulahee hoe mooaa naapaak |1| rahaau |
The emperor did not succeed in his plot, and he died in disgrace. ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਢਿ ਕੁਠਾਰੁ ਖਸਮਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਕਾਟਿਆ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਗਇਆ ਹੈ ਖਾਕੁ ॥
kaadt kutthaar khasam sir kaattiaa khin meh hoe geaa hai khaak |
The Lord and Master raised His axe, and chopped off his head; in an instant, he was reduced to dust. ||1||
ਮੰਦਾ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਪਚਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਧਾਕੁ ॥੧॥
mandaa chitavat chitavat pachiaa jin rachiaa tin deenaa dhaak |1|
Plotting and planning evil, he was destroyed. The One who created him, gave him a push.
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਮੀਤ ਧਨੁ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਰਹਿਓ ਸੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਗਇਆ ਸਭ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਕੁ ॥
putr meet dhan kichhoo na rahio su chhodd geaa sabh bhaaee saak |
Of his sons, friends and wealth, nothing remains; he departed, leaving behind all his brothers and relatives.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਨ ਕਾ ਕੀਨੋ ਪੂਰਨ ਵਾਕੁ ॥੨॥੧੮॥੧੦੪॥
kahu naanak tis prabh balihaaree jin jan kaa keeno pooran vaak |2|18|104|
Says Nanak, I am a sacrifice to God, who fulfilled the word of His slave. ||2||18||104||

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਕੀਆ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aape aap varatai suaamee kaaraj raas keea guradev |1| rahaau |
Our Lord and Master Himself is Himself all-pervading. The Divine Guru has resolved all my affairs. ||1||Pause||
ਆਦਿ ਮਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅੰਤਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਪਨਾ ਥਾਟੁ ਬਨਾਇਓ ਆਪਿ ॥
aad madh prabh ant suaamee apanaa thaatt banaaeo aap |
In the beginning, in the middle and in the end, God is our only Lord and Master. He Himself fashioned His Creation.
ਅਪਨੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੀ ਆਪੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋ ਵਡ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥੧॥
apane sevak kee aape raakhai prabh mere ko vadd parataap |1|
He Himself saves His servant. Great is the glorious grandeur of my God! ||1||
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਨੑੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਜੰਤ ॥
paarabraham paramesur satigur vas keenae jin sagale jant |
The Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord is the True Guru; all beings are in His power.
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮੰਤ ॥੨॥੧੯॥੧੦੫॥
charan kamal naanak saranaaee raam naam jap niramal mant |2|19|105|
Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of His Lotus Feet, chanting the Lord's Name, the immaculate Mantra. ||2||19||105||

ਤਾਪ ਪਾਪ ਤੇ ਰਾਖੇ ਆਪ ॥

He Himself protects me from suffering and sin.
ਸੀਤਲ ਭਏ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਲਾਗੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਪ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
seetal bhe gur charanee laage raam naam hirade meh jaap |1| rahaau |
Falling at the Guru's Feet, I am cooled and soothed; I meditate on the Lord's Name within my heart. ||1||Pause||
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹਸਤ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੀਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਉਧਾਰ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ॥
kar kirapaa hasat prabh deene jagat udhaar nav khandd prataap |
Granting His Mercy, God has extended His Hands. He is the Emancipator of the World; His glorious radiance pervades the nine continents.
ਦੁਖ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਸੁਖ ਅਨਦ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਬੁਝੀ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਸਚੁ ਧ੍ਰਾਪ ॥੧॥
dukh binase sukh anad pravesaa trisan bujhee man tan sach dhraap |1|
My pain has been dispelled, and peace and pleasure have come; my desire is quenched, and my mind and body are truly satisfied. ||1||
ਅਨਾਥ ਕੋ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕੋ ਮਾਈ ਬਾਪੁ ॥
anaath ko naath saran samarathaa sagal srisatt ko maaee baap |
He is the Master of the masterless, All-powerful to give Sanctuary. He is the Mother and Father of the whole Universe.
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਲਾਪ ॥੨॥੨੦॥੧੦੬॥
bhagat vachhal bhai bhanjan suaamee gun gaavat naanak aalaap |2|20|106|
He is the Lover of His devotees, the Destroyer of fear; Nanak sings and chants the Glorious Praises of his Lord and Master. ||2||20||106||

ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥

Acknowledge the One, from whom You originated.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਕੁਸਲ ਖੇਮ ਹੋਏ ਕਲਿਆਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paarabraham paramesar dhiaaeaa kusal khem hoe kaliaan |1| rahaau |
Meditating on the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord, I have found peace, pleasure and salvation. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਬਡ ਭਾਗੀ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸੁਜਾਨੁ ॥
gur pooraa bhettio badd bhaagee antarajaamee sugharr sujaan |
I met the Perfect Guru, by great good fortune, and so found the wise and all-knowing Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਹਾਥ ਦੇਇ ਰਾਖੇ ਕਰਿ ਅਪਨੇ ਬਡ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਨਿਮਾਣਿਆ ਕੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
haath dee raakhe kar apane badd samarath nimaaniaa ko maan |1|
He gave me His Hand, and making me His own, He saved me; He is absolutely all-powerful, the honor of the dishonored. ||1||
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੈ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਗਏ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਚਾਨਾਣੁ ॥
bhram bhai binas ge khin bheetar andhakaar pragatte chaanaan |
Doubt and fear have been dispelled in an instant, and in the darkness, the Divine Light shines forth.
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਆਰਾਧੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜਾਈਐ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੨॥੨੧॥੧੦੭॥
saas saas aaraadhai naanak sadaa sadaa jaaeeai kurabaan |2|21|107|
With each and every breath, Nanak worships and adores the Lord; forever and ever, I am a sacrifice to Him. ||2||21||107||

ਦੋਵੈ ਥਾਵ ਰਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਸੂਰੇ ॥

Both here and hereafter, the Mighty Guru protects me.
ਹਲਤ ਪਲਤ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਹੋਏ ਸਗਲੇ ਪੂਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
halat palat paarabraham savaare kaaraj hoe sagale poore |1| rahaau |
God has embellished this world and the next for me, and all my affairs are perfectly resolved. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਜਨੁ ਹੋਵਤ ਸਾਧੂ ਧੂਰੇ ॥
har har naam japat sukh sahaje majan hovat saadhoo dhoore |
Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, I have found peace and poise, bathing in the dust of the feet of the Holy.
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣ ਰਹੇ ਥਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕੇ ਮਿਟੇ ਬਿਸੂਰੇ ॥੧॥
aavan jaan rahe thit paaee janam maran ke mitte bisoore |1|
Comings and goings have ceased, and I have found stability; the pains of birth and death are eradicated. ||1||
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੈ ਤਰੇ ਛੁਟੇ ਭੈ ਜਮ ਕੇ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਏਕੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥
bhram bhai tare chhutte bhai jam ke ghatt ghatt ek rahiaa bharapoore |
I cross over the ocean of doubt and fear, and the fear of death is gone; the One Lord is permeating and pervading in each and every heart.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਹਜੂਰੇ ॥੨॥੨੨॥੧੦੮॥
naanak saran pario dukh bhanjan antar baahar pekh hajoore |2|22|108|
Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of the Destroyer of pain; I behold His Presence deep within, and all around as well. ||2||22||108||
