ਤੀਰ ਸਤੁਦ੍ਰਵ ਕੇ ਹੁਤੋ ਰਹਤ ਰਾਇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥
teer satudrav ke huto rehat raae sukh paae |
There lived a Raja at the banks of river Satluj.
ਦਰਬ ਹੇਤ ਤਿਹ ਠੌਰ ਹੀ ਰਾਮਜਨੀ ਇਕ ਆਇ ॥੧॥
darab het tih tthauar hee raamajanee ik aae |1|
Enticed by the lure of his wealth, a prostitute came over.(1)

ਛਜਿਯਾ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ਸਕਲ ਜਗ ਜਾਨਈ ॥
chhajiyaa jaa ko naam sakal jag jaanee |
She was called Chhajia and, to her rich patrons,
ਲਧੀਆ ਵਾ ਕੀ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਤੂ ਪਹਿਚਾਨਈ ॥
ladheea vaa kee naam hitoo pahichaanee |
She was known by the name of Ladhia.
ਜੋ ਕੋਊ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਿਲੋਕਤ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥
jo koaoo purakh bilokat tin ko aae kai |
Any body who saw her
ਹੋ ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਤ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੨॥
ho man bach kram kar rahit hridai sukh paae kai |2|
Felt a seductive sensation through her beauty.(2)

ਨਿਰਖਿ ਰਾਇ ਸੌ ਬਸਿ ਭਈ ਤਿਸ ਬਸਿ ਹੋਤ ਨ ਸੋਇ ॥
nirakh raae sau bas bhee tis bas hot na soe |
She fell in love with that Raja but the Raja did not get into her trap.
ਤਿਨ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਰੀ ਕਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਬੌ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥
tin chit mai chintaa karee kih bidh milabau hoe |3|
She commenced on her designs how to meet him.(3)
ਯਹ ਮੋ ਪਰ ਰੀਝਤ ਨਹੀ ਕਹੁ ਕਸ ਕਰੋ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
yeh mo par reejhat nahee kahu kas karo upaae |
‘He is not falling in love with me, what should I do.
ਮੋਰੇ ਸਦਨ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਮੁਹਿ ਨਹਿ ਲੇਤ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥੪॥
more sadan na aavee muhi neh let bulaae |4|
‘Neither he comes to my house, nor calls me over.(4)
ਤੁਰਤੁ ਤਵਨ ਕੋ ਕੀਜਿਯੈ ਕਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਨ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
turat tavan ko keejiyai kih bidh milan upaae |
‘I must contrive quickly,’ thinking thus she indulged in the magical
ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਚੇਟਕ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਏ ਜੁ ਬਸਿ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
jantr mantr chettak charitr kee ju bas hvai jaae |5|
Charms to allure him.(5)
ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਰਹੀ ਹਾਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਮਿਲ︀ਯੋ ਨਹਿ ਆਇ ॥
jantr mantr rahee haar kar raae milayo neh aae |
She was exhausted performing the charms but the Raja never turned up.
ਏਕ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਤਬ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਯੋ ਬਸਿ ਕਰਬੇ ਕੇ ਭਾਇ ॥੬॥
ek charitr tab tin kiyo bas karabe ke bhaae |6|
Then, to tempt the Raja she devised a scheme.(6)
ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਭੈ ਭਗਵੇ ਕਰੇ ਧਰਿ ਜੁਗਿਯਾ ਕੋ ਭੇਸ ॥
basatr sabhai bhagave kare dhar jugiyaa ko bhes |
She put on the saffron coloured attire, disguising herself as a Jogan,
ਸਭਾ ਮਧ︀ਯ ਤਿਹ ਰਾਇ ਕੌ ਕੀਨੋ ਆਨਿ ਅਦੇਸ ॥੭॥
sabhaa madhay tih raae kau keeno aan ades |7|
The ascetic, entered the Royal Court and paid the obeisance.(7)

ਤਿਹ ਜੁਗਿਯਹਿ ਲਖਿ ਰਾਇ ਰੀਝਿ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥
tih jugiyeh lakh raae reejh chit mai rahiyo |
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੌ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਮਨ ਮੋ ਚਹਿਯੋ ॥
jaa te kachh sangrahau mantr man mo chahiyo |
The Raja was contented to see an ascetic and thought he could learn a few charms from her.
ਤਿਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਦਿਯੋ ਪਠਾਇਕ ਦੂਤ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
tih grihi diyo patthaaeik doot bulaae kai |
ਹੋ ਕਲਾ ਸਿਖਨ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਝਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੮॥
ho kalaa sikhan ke het mantr samajhaae kai |8|
The Raja sent one of his attendants to learn some magical faculties.(8)

raae kahiyo so taeh jataavaa |
The attendant walked over to her house and conveyed her the Raja’s intention.
ਕਛੂ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਮੁਰ ਈਸਹਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
kachhoo mantr mur eeseh deejai |
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਜਾਨਿ ਕਾਰਜ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੯॥
kripaa jaan kaaraj prabh keejai |9|
‘Please do me a favour and enable me learn some charms.’(9)

ਪਹਰ ਏਕ ਲੌ ਛੋਰਿ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਕਹੀ ਜੋਗ ਯਹਿ ਬਾਤ ॥
pehar ek lau chhor drig kahee jog yeh baat |
The Jogan opened her eyes after a period of three hours and said, ‘If
ਲੈ ਆਵਹੁ ਰਾਜਹਿ ਇਹਾ ਜੌ ਗੁਨ ਸਿਖ︀ਯੋ ਚਹਾਤ ॥੧੦॥
lai aavahu raajeh ihaa jau gun sikhayo chahaat |10|

ਅਰਧ ਰਾਤ ਬੀਤੈ ਜਬੈ ਆਵੈ ਹਮਰੇ ਪਾਸ ॥
aradh raat beetai jabai aavai hamare paas |
‘Past mid-night he should come to us and, with the blessings of Gorakh
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੋਰਖ ਕੀ ਮਯਾ ਤੇ ਜੈ ਹੈ ਨਹੀ ਨਿਰਾਸ ॥੧੧॥
sree gorakh kee mayaa te jai hai nahee niraas |11|
Nath, he will not go back disappointed.’(11)

ਅਰਧ ਰਾਤ੍ਰ ਬੀਤੇ ਸੁ ਜਗਾਯੋ ॥
aradh raatr beete su jagaayo |
By waking him up at Past-midnight
ਤਾ ਜੁਗਿਯਾ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਲੈ ਆਯੋ ॥
taa jugiyaa ke grih lai aayo |
And brought him to the Jogan
ਹੇਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਅਤਿ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੧੨॥
her raae triy at sukh paayo |12|
At the sight of the Raja she sighed with relief.(12)

ਤਬ ਰਾਜੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਕੀਆ ਲੋਗਨ ਦਿਯਾ ਉਠਾਇ ॥
tab raajai taiso keea logan diyaa utthaae |
She told the Raja to send all the courtesans away and fetch the festival
ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਅਛਤ ਪੁਹਪ ਆਛੋ ਸੁਰਾ ਮੰਗਾਇ ॥੧੪॥
dhoop deep achhat puhap aachho suraa mangaae |14|
Lights, flowers and vintage wines.(14)
ਤਬ ਰਾਜੇ ਅਪਨੇ ਸਭਨ ਲੋਗਨ ਦਿਯਾ ਉਠਾਇ ॥
tab raaje apane sabhan logan diyaa utthaae |
The Raja ordered all his people to leave, and stayed alone to seek
ਆਪੁ ਇਕੇਲੋ ਹੀ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਹੇਤ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥੧੫॥

ਤਬ ਜੋਗੀ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
tab jogee ih bhaat uchaariyo |
To begin with I will show you
ਚਮਤਕਾਰ ਇਕ ਤੌਹਿ ਦਿਖੈਹੌ ॥
chamatakaar ik taueh dikhaihau |
A miracle and, thereafter,
ਤਿਹ ਪਾਛੈ ਤੁਹਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਖੈਹੌ ॥੧੬॥
tih paachhai tuhi mantr sikhaihau |16|
The magical charms will be taught to you.(16)

ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਹੋਵਹੁ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਜੀਅ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਸੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kabahu na hovahu drisatt agochar jeea kai sang base |1| rahaau |
Please, never leave my vision, O Lord; please abide with my soul. ||1||Pause||
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥

My Beloved Lord and Master is the Support of the breath of life.
ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥੧॥

God, the Inner-knower, is all-pervading. ||1||
ਕਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਾਰਿ ਸਮੑਾਰੀ ॥

Which of Your Glorious Virtues should I contemplate and remember?
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਚਿਤਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
saas saas prabh tujheh chitaaree |2|
With each and every breath, O God, I remember You. ||2||
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
kirapaa nidh prabh deen deaalaa |
God is the ocean of mercy, merciful to the meek;
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਕੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥੩॥
jeea jant kee karahu pratipaalaa |3|
He cherishes all beings and creatures. ||3||
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨੁ ਜਾਪੇ ॥
aatth pehar teraa naam jan jaape |
Twenty-four hours a day, Your humble servant chants Your Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪੇ ॥੪॥੨੩॥੧੦੯॥

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ਭਜਨੁ ਨ ਕੀਨੋ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਨਿਸਿ ਭੋਰੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

You have not meditated and vibrated upon the Lord's Name; while you commit your sins of corruption in the night, the light of day dawns upon you. ||1||Pause||
ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਭੋਜਨ ਨਿਤ ਖਾਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਦੰਤਾ ਘਸਿ ਖੀਨ ਖਇਆ ॥
anik prakaar bhojan nit khaate mukh dantaa ghas kheen kheaa |
Continually eating all sorts of foods, the teeth in your mouth crumble, decay and fall out.
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਠਉ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਤ ਨਹ ਪਰੀ ਦਇਆ ॥੧॥

Living in egotism and possessiveness, you are deluded; committing sins, you have no kindness for others. ||1||
ਮਹਾ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਘੋਰ ਦੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗਲਤੁ ਪਇਆ ॥
mahaa bikaar ghor dukh saagar tis meh praanee galat peaa |
The great sins are the terrible ocean of pain; the mortal is engrossed in them.
ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੀ ਬਾਹ ਪਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਲਇਆ ॥੨॥੨੪॥੧੧੦॥

Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of his Lord and Master; taking him by the arm, God has lifted him up and out. ||2||24||110||

dusaman dusatt rahe jhakh maarat kusal bheaa mere bhaaee meet |1| rahaau |
My enemies and opponents have grown weary of attacking me, and now, I have become happy, O my friends and Siblings of Destiny. ||1||Pause||
ਗਈ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਉਪਾਧਿ ਸਭ ਨਾਸੀ ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕੀਓ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥
gee biaadh upaadh sabh naasee angeekaar keeo karataar |
The disease is gone, and all misfortunes have been averted; the Creator Lord has made me His own.
ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੂਖ ਅਰੁ ਅਨਦ ਘਨੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰ ਹਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
saant sookh ar anad ghanere preetam naam ridai ur haar |1|
I have found peace, tranquility and total bliss, enshrining the Name of my Beloved Lord within my heart. ||1||
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਤੂੰ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
jeeo pindd dhan raas prabh teree toon samarath suaamee meraa |
My soul, body and wealth are all Your capital; O God, You are my All-powerful Lord and Master.
ਦਾਸ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਉ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਚੇਰਾ ॥੨॥੨੫॥੧੧੧॥
daas apune kau raakhanahaaraa naanak daas sadaa hai cheraa |2|25|111|
You are the Saving Grace of Your slaves; slave Nanak is forever Your slave. ||2||25||111||

Meditating in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe, I am emancipated.
ਮਿਟੀ ਉਪਾਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mittee upaadh bheaa sukh saachaa antarajaamee simariaa jaan |1| rahaau |
Suffering is eradicated, and true peace has come, meditating on the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਏ ਸੁਖਾਲੇ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਉ ਸਾਚਾ ਤਾਣੁ ॥
jis ke jeea tin kee sukhaale bhagat janaa kau saachaa taan |
All beings belong to Him - He makes them happy. He is the true power of His humble devotees.
ਦਾਸ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕੀ ਆਪੇ ਰਾਖੀ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੧॥
daas apune kee aape raakhee bhai bhanjan aoopar karate maan |1|
He Himself saves and protects His slaves, who believe in their Creator, the Destroyer of fear. ||1||
ਭਈ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾਈ ਮਿਟੀ ਬੁਰਾਈ ਦ੍ਰੁਸਟ ਦੂਤ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਢੇ ਛਾਣਿ ॥
bhee mitraaee mittee buraaee drusatt doot har kaadte chhaan |
I have found friendship, and hatred has been eradicated; the Lord has rooted out the enemies and villains.
ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਘਨੇਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣਹ ਵਖਾਣਿ ॥੨॥੨੬॥੧੧੨॥
sookh sehaj aanand ghanere naanak jeevai har gunah vakhaan |2|26|112|
Nanak has been blessed with celestial peace and poise and total bliss; chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, he lives. ||2||26||112||

The Supreme Lord God has become Merciful.
ਕਾਰਜ ਸਗਲ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaaraj sagal savaare satigur jap jap saadhoo bhe nihaal |1| rahaau |
The True Guru has arranged all my affairs; chanting and meditating with the Holy Saints, I have become happy. ||1||Pause||
ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਅਪਨੈ ਦੋਖੀ ਸਗਲੇ ਭਏ ਰਵਾਲ ॥
angeekaar keea prabh apanai dokhee sagale bhe ravaal |
God has made me His own, and all my enemies have been reduced to dust.
ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇ ਰਾਖੇ ਜਨ ਅਪਨੇ ਉਧਰਿ ਲੀਏ ਲਾਇ ਅਪਨੈ ਪਾਲ ॥੧॥
kantth laae raakhe jan apane udhar lee laae apanai paal |1|
He hugs us close in His embrace, and protects His humble servants; attaching us to the hem of His robe, he saves us. ||1||
ਸਹੀ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਏ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਹੋਏ ਕਾਲ ॥
sahee salaamat mil ghar aae nindak ke mukh hoe kaal |
Safe and sound, we have returned home, while the slanderer's face is blackened.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੨॥੨੭॥੧੧੩॥
