ਬਹੁਤ ਬਰਖ ਇਹ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਿਤਾਏ ॥
bahut barakh ih bhaant bitaae |
ਚੁਨਿ ਚੁਨਿ ਚੋਰ ਸਬੈ ਗਹਿ ਘਾਏ ॥
chun chun chor sabai geh ghaae |
Many years elapsed in this way, all the wicked persons (thieves) were spotted, caught and killed.
ਕੇਤਕ ਭਾਜਿ ਸਹਿਰ ਤੇ ਗਏ ॥
ketak bhaaj sahir te ge |
ਭੂਖ ਮਰਤ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਤ ਭਏ ॥੧॥
bhookh marat fir aavat bhe |1|
Some of them fled away from the city, but came back on account of saarevation.1.
ਤਬ ਲੌ ਖਾਨ ਦਿਲਾਵਰ ਆਏ ॥
tab lau khaan dilaavar aae |
ਪੂਤ ਆਪਨ ਹਮ ਓਰ ਪਠਾਏ ॥

Then Dilwar Khan (Governor of Lahore) sent his son aginst me.
ਦ੍ਵੈਕ ਘਰੀ ਬੀਤੀ ਨਿਸਿ ਜਬੈ ॥
dvaik gharee beetee nis jabai |
ਚੜਤ ਕਰੀ ਖਾਨਨ ਮਿਲਿ ਤਬੈ ॥੨॥

A few hours after nightfall, the Khans assembled and advanced for attack.2
ਜਬ ਦਲ ਪਾਰ ਨਦੀ ਕੇ ਆਯੋ ॥
jab dal paar nadee ke aayo |
ਆਨ ਆਲਮੈ ਹਮੈ ਜਗਾਯੋ ॥
aan aalamai hamai jagaayo |
When their forces crossed the river, Alam (Singh) came and woke me up.
ਸੋਰੁ ਪਰਾ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਨਰ ਜਾਗੇ ॥
sor paraa sabh hee nar jaage |
ਗਹਿ ਗਹਿ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੀਰ ਰਿਸ ਪਾਗੇ ॥੩॥

There was a great consternation and all the people got up. They took up their arms with valour and zeal.3.
ਛੂਟਨ ਲਗੀ ਤੁਫ਼ੰਗੈਂ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥
chhoottan lagee tufangain tab hee |
ਗਹਿ ਗਹਿ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਰਿਸਾਨੇ ਸਬ ਹੀ ॥
geh geh sasatr risaane sab hee |
The discharge of the volleys of shots from guns began immediately. Everyone was in a rage, holding the arms in hand.
ਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥
kraoor bhaant tin karee pukaaraa |
ਸੋਰੁ ਸੁਨਾ ਸਰਤਾ ਕੇ ਪਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
sor sunaa sarataa ke paaraa |4|
They raised various dreadful shouts. The noise was heard on the other side of the river.4.

ਬਜੀ ਭੇਰ ਭੁੰਕਾਰ ਧੁੰਕੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ ॥

ਮਹਾਂ ਬੀਰ ਬਾਨੈਤ ਬੰਕੇ ਬਕਾਰੇ ॥
mahaan beer baanait banke bakaare |
The bugles blew, the trumpets resounded, the great heroes entered the fray, shouting loudly.
ਭਏ ਬਾਹੁ ਆਘਾਤ ਨੱਚੇ ਮਰਾਲੰ ॥
bhe baahu aaghaat nache maraalan |
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਸਿੰਧ ਕਾਲੀ ਗਰੱਜੀ ਕਰਾਲੰ ॥੫॥
kripaa sindh kaalee garajee karaalan |5|
From both sides, the arms clattered with force and the horses danced, it seemed that the dreadful goddess Kali thundered in the battlefield.5.
ਨਦੀਯੰ ਲਖਿਯੋ ਕਾਲ ਰਾਤ੍ਰੰ ਸਮਾਨੰ ॥
nadeeyan lakhiyo kaal raatran samaanan |
ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਸੀਤ ਪਿੰਗੰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨੰ ॥
kare sooramaa seet pingan pramaanan |
The river appeared like the night of death the severe chill cramped the soldiers.
ਇਤੇ ਬੀਰ ਗੱਜੇ ਭਏ ਨਾਦ ਭਾਰੇ ॥
eite beer gaje bhe naad bhaare |
ਭਜੇ ਖਾਨ ਖੂਨੀ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਝਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
bhaje khaan khoonee binaa sasatr jhaare |6|
The heroes form this (my) side thundred and the bloody Khans fled away without using their weapons.6.

The shameless Khans fled away and none of them wore the arms.
ਸੁ ਤਿਆਗ ਖੇਤ ਕੌ ਚਲੇ ॥
su tiaag khet kau chale |
ਸੁ ਬੀਰ ਬੀਰਹਾ ਭਲੇ ॥
su beer beerahaa bhale |
They left the battlefield though they pretended to be the valiant heroes.7.
ਚਲੇ ਤੁਰੇ ਤੁਰਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
chale ture turaae kai |
ਸਕੇ ਨ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਉਠਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
sake na sasatr utthaae kai |
They left on galloping horses and could not use the weapons.
ਨ ਲੈ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਗੱਜਹੀਂ ॥

ਨਿਹਾਰ ਨਾਰਿ ਲੱਜਹੀਂ ॥੮॥

They did not shout loudly like valiant heroes and felt Ashamed on seeing ladies.8.

ਬਰਵਾ ਗਾਉਂ ਉਜਾਰ ਕੈ ਕਰੇ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਭਲਾਨ ॥
baravaa gaaun ujaar kai kare mukaam bhalaan |
On the way they plundered the village Barwa and halted at Bhallon.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਲ ਹਮੈ ਨ ਛੁਇ ਸਕੈ ਭਾਜਤ ਭਏ ਨਿਦਾਨ ॥੯॥
prabh bal hamai na chhue sakai bhaajat bhe nidaan |9|
They could not touch me because of the Grace of the Lord and fled away ultimately.9.
ਤਬ ਬਲ ਈਹਾ ਨ ਪਰ ਸਕੈ ਬਰਵਾ ਹਨਾ ਰਿਸਾਇ ॥
tab bal eehaa na par sakai baravaa hanaa risaae |
Because of Thy Favour, O Lord! They could not do any harmahere, but filled with great anger, they destroyed the village Barwa.
ਸਾਲਿਨ ਰਸ ਜਿਮ ਬਾਨੀਯੋ ਰੋਰਨ ਖਾਤ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
saalin ras jim baaneeyo roran khaat banaae |10|
Just as a Vishya (Bania), though desirous of tasting meat, cannot actually have its relish, but instead prepares and eats the salted soup of parched wheat. 10.

ਸਕੈ ਜ੍ਵਾਬੁ ਦੈ ਨਾ ਹਨੇ ਸੂਰ ਲੱਜੰ ॥
sakai jvaab dai naa hane soor lajan |
The Khanzada fled to his father and being ashmed of his conduct, he could not speak.
ਤਹਾ ਠੋਕ ਬਾਹਾਂ ਹੁਸੈਨੀ ਗਰੱਜਿਯੰ ॥
tahaa tthok baahaan husainee garajiyan |
ਸਬੈ ਸੂਰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਿਲਾ ਸਾਜ ਸੱਜਿਯੰ ॥੧॥
sabai soor lai ke silaa saaj sajiyan |1|
Then Hussian thundered striking his arms and prepared for attack with all his brave warriors.1.
ਕਰਿਯੋ ਜੋਰ ਸੈਨੰ ਹੁਸੈਨੀ ਪਯਾਨੰ ॥
kariyo jor sainan husainee payaanan |
ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਕੂਟਿ ਕੈ ਲੂਟ ਲੀਨੇ ਅਵਾਨੰ ॥
pratham koott kai loott leene avaanan |
Hussain assembled all his forces and advanced. At first he plundered the houses of the hill-people.
ਪੁਨਰ ਡਢਵਾਲੰ ਕੀਯੋ ਜੀਤਿ ਜੇਰੰ ॥
punar ddadtavaalan keeyo jeet jeran |
ਕਰੇ ਬੰਦਿ ਕੈ ਰਾਜ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਾਨ ਚੇਰੰ ॥੨॥
kare band kai raaj putraan cheran |2|
Then he conquered the Raja of Dadhwal and brought him under submission. The sons of the Raja were made slaves.2.
ਪੁਨਰਿ ਦੂਨਿ ਕੋ ਲੂਟ ਲੀਨੋ ਸੁਧਾਰੰ ॥
punar doon ko loott leeno sudhaaran |
ਕੋਈ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਸਕਿਯੋ ਨ ਗਵਾਰੰ ॥
koee saamuhe hvai sakiyo na gavaaran |
Then he plundered the Doon thoroughly, none could face the barbarian.
ਲੀਯੋ ਛੀਨ ਅੰਨੰ ਦਲੰ ਬਾਂਟਿ ਦੀਯੰ ॥
leeyo chheen anan dalan baantt deeyan |
ਮਹਾ ਮੂੜਿਯੰ ਕੁਤਸਤੰ ਕਾਜ ਕੀਯੰ ॥੩॥
mahaa moorriyan kutasatan kaaj keeyan |3|
He took away forcibly the foodgrains and distributed them (amongst the soldiers), the big fool thus committed a very bad act.3.

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਜਮਡੰਡੁ ਲਗੈ ਤਿਨ ਆਇ ॥
haumai karam kamaavade jamaddandd lagai tin aae |
Those who go around acting in egotism are struck down by the Messenger of Death with his club.
ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
ji satigur sevan se ubare har setee liv laae |1|
Those who serve the True Guru are uplifted and saved, in love with the Lord. ||1||
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥
man re guramukh naam dhiaae |
O mind, become Gurmukh, and meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਧੁਰਿ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dhur poorab karatai likhiaa tinaa guramat naam samaae |1| rahaau |
Those who are so pre-destined by the Creator are absorbed into the Naam, through the Guru's Teachings. ||1||Pause||
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੋ ਭਾਉ ॥
vin satigur parateet na aavee naam na laago bhaau |
Without the True Guru, faith does not come, and love for the Naam is not embraced.
ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਈ ਦੁਖ ਮਹਿ ਸਵੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
supanai sukh na paavee dukh meh savai samaae |2|
Even in dreams, they find no peace; they sleep immersed in pain. ||2||
ਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਲੋਚੀਐ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
je har har keechai bahut locheeai kirat na mettiaa jaae |
Even if you chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, with great longing, your past actions are still not erased.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਪਏ ਦਰਿ ਥਾਇ ॥੩॥
har kaa bhaanaa bhagatee maniaa se bhagat pe dar thaae |3|
The Lord's devotees surrender to His Will; those devotees are accepted at His Door. ||3||
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਦਿੜਾਵੈ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur sabad dirraavai rang siau bin kirapaa leaa na jaae |
The Guru has lovingly implanted the Word of His Shabad within me. Without His Grace, it cannot be attained.
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨੀਰੀਐ ਭੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਫਲੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਧਾਇ ॥੪॥
je sau amrit neereeai bhee bikh fal laagai dhaae |4|
Even if the poisonous plant is watered with ambrosial nectar a hundred times, it will still bear poisonous fruit. ||4||
ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਚੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਜਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
se jan sache niramale jin satigur naal piaar |
Those humble beings who are in love with the True Guru are pure and true.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜਿ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
satigur kaa bhaanaa kamaavade bikh haumai taj vikaar |5|
They act in harmony with the Will of the True Guru; they shed the poison of ego and corruption. ||5||
ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਿਤੈ ਉਪਾਇ ਨ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੋਧਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
manahatth kitai upaae na chhootteeai simrit saasatr sodhahu jaae |
Acting in stubborn-mindedness, no one is saved; go and study the Simritees and the Shaastras.
ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਉਬਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੬॥
mil sangat saadhoo ubare gur kaa sabad kamaae |6|
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and practicing the Shabads of the Guru, you shall be saved. ||6||
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
har kaa naam nidhaan hai jis ant na paaraavaar |
The Name of the Lord is the Treasure, which has no end or limitation.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਈ ਸੋਹਦੇ ਜਿਨ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
guramukh seee sohade jin kirapaa kare karataar |7|
The Gurmukhs are beauteous; the Creator has blessed them with His Mercy. ||7||
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
naanak daataa ek hai doojaa aaur na koe |
O Nanak, the One Lord alone is the Giver; there is no other at all.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥੨॥੧੯॥
gur parasaadee paaeeai karam paraapat hoe |8|2|19|
By Guru's Grace, He is obtained. By His Mercy, He is found. ||8||2||19||
