ਕਿਤਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਬੀਤਤ ਭਏ ਕਰਤ ਉਸੈ ਉਤਪਾਤ ॥

kitak divas beetat bhe karat usai utapaat |

ਗੁਆਲੇਰੀਅਨ ਕੀ ਪਰਤ ਭੀ ਆਨ ਮਿਲਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ॥੪॥

guaalereean kee parat bhee aan milan kee baat |4|

Some days passed in such acts, the turn of meeting the Raja of Guler came.4.

ਜੌ ਦਿਨ ਦੁਇਕ ਨ ਵੇ ਮਿਲਤ ਤਬ ਆਵਤ ਅਰਰਾਇ ॥

jau din dueik na ve milat tab aavat araraae |

ਕਾਲਿ ਤਿਨੂ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਬਿਖੈ ਡਾਰੀ ਕਲਹ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੫॥

kaal tinoo ke ghar bikhai ddaaree kalah banaae |5|

If he had met (Hussain) for two days more, the enemy would have come here (towards me), but the Providence had thrown a device of discord towards his house.5.

The Raja of Guler came to meet Hussain and with him came Ram Singh.

ਚਤਰਥ ਆਨ ਮਿਲਤ ਭਏ ਜਾਮੰ ॥

chatarath aan milat bhe jaaman |

ਫੂਟਿ ਗਈ ਲਖਿ ਨਜਰਿ ਗੁਲਾਮੰ ॥੬॥

foott gee lakh najar gulaaman |6|

They met Hussain after the four quarters of the days had passed. The slave Hussian become blind in vanity.6.

ਜੈਸੇ ਰਵਿ ਕੇ ਤੇਜ ਤੇ ਰੇਤ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਪਤਾਇ ॥

jaise rav ke tej te ret adhik tapataae |

ਰਵਿ ਬਲਿ ਛੁਦ੍ਰ ਨ ਜਾਨਈ ਆਪਨ ਹੀ ਗਰਬਾਇ ॥੭॥

rav bal chhudr na jaanee aapan hee garabaae |7|

Just as the sand becomes heated by the heat of the sun, the wretched sand doth not know the might of the sun and become proud of itself.7.

ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਫੂਲ ਗੁਲਾਮ ਜਾਤ ਭਯੋ ॥

ਤਿਨੈ ਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਤਰੇ ਆਨਤ ਭਯੋ ॥

tinai na drisatt tare aanat bhayo |

Slimilarly the slave Hussain was puffed up with ego, he did not care to notice them.

ਕਾਹਲੂਰੀਆ ਕਟੋਚ ਸੰਗ ਲਹਿ ॥

kaahalooreea kattoch sang leh |

ਜਾਨਾ ਆਨ ਨ ਮੋ ਸਰ ਮਹਿ ਮਹਿ ॥੮॥

jaanaa aan na mo sar meh meh |8|

With the Rajas of Kahlur and Katoch on his side, he considered himself peerless. 8.

ਤਿਨ ਜੋ ਧਨ ਆਨੋ ਸੋ ਸਾਥਾ ॥

tin jo dhan aano so saathaa |

ਤੇ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹੁਸੈਨੀ ਹਾਥਾ ॥

te de rahe husainee haathaa |

(The Raja of Guler and Ram Singh) offered money to Hussain, which they had brought with them.

ਦੇਤ ਲੇਤ ਆਪਨ ਕੁਰਰਾਨੇ ॥

det let aapan kuraraane |

ਤੇ ਧਨਿ ਲੈ ਨਿਜਿ ਧਾਮ ਸਿਧਾਨੇ ॥੯॥

te dhan lai nij dhaam sidhaane |9|

A dispute arose in giving and taking, therefore the Rajas returned to their places with the money.9.

ਚੇਰੋ ਤਬੈ ਤੇਜ ਤਨ ਤਯੋ ॥

chero tabai tej tan tayo |

ਭਲਾ ਬੁਰਾ ਕਛੁ ਲਖਤ ਨ ਭਯੋ ॥

bhalaa buraa kachh lakhat na bhayo |

Then Hussain was enraged and lost the power of discriminating between good and bad.

ਛੰਦ ਬੰਦ ਨਹ ਨੈਕੁ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ॥

chhand band neh naik bichaaraa |

ਜਾਤ ਭਯੋ ਦੇ ਤਬਹਿ ਨਗਾਰਾ ॥੧੦॥

jaat bhayo de tabeh nagaaraa |10|

He made no other consideration and ordered the beating drum against the Raja of Guler.10.

ਦਾਵ ਘਾਵ ਤਿਨ ਨੈਕੁ ਨ ਕਰਾ ॥

daav ghaav tin naik na karaa |

ਸਿੰਘਹਿ ਘੇਰਿ ਸਸਾ ਕਹੁ ਡਰਾ ॥

singheh gher sasaa kahu ddaraa |

He did not think of any tactical consideration. The hare surrounded the lion for frightening him.

ਪੰਦ੍ਰਹ ਪਹਿਰ ਗਿਰਦ ਤਿਨ ਕੀਯੋ ॥

pandrah pahir girad tin keeyo |

ਖਾਨ ਪਾਨ ਤਿਨ ਜਾਨ ਨ ਦੀਯੋ ॥੧੧॥

khaan paan tin jaan na deeyo |11|

He besieged him for fifteen pahars (about 45 hours) and did not allow the items of food and drink to reach the state.11.

ਖਾਨ ਪਾਨ ਬਿਨ ਸੂਰਿ ਰਿਸਾਏ ॥

khaan paan bin soor risaae |

ਸਾਮ ਕਰਨ ਹਿਤ ਦੂਤ ਪਠਾਏ ॥

saam karan hit doot patthaae |

Being without food and drink, the warriors were filled with ire, the Raja sent the messengers for the Purpose of making peace.

ਦਾਸ ਨਿਰਖ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੈਨ ਪਠਾਨੀ ॥

daas nirakh sang sain patthaanee |

ਫੂਲਿ ਗਯੋ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਾਨੀ ॥੧੨॥

fool gayo tin kee naheen maanee |12|

Seeing the Pathan forces around him, the slave Hussain lost his balance and did not consider the request of the Raja.12.

ਦਸ ਸਹੰਸ੍ਰ ਅਬ ਹੀ ਕੈ ਦੈਹੂ ॥

das sahansr ab hee kai daihoo |

ਨਾ ਤਰ ਮੀਚ ਮੂੰਡ ਪਰ ਲੈਹੂ ॥

naa tar meech moondd par laihoo |

He said, “Either give me ten thousand rupees immediately or take death on year head.”

ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਗਤੀਆ ਤਹਾ ਪਠਾਏ ॥

singh sangateea tahaa patthaae |

ਗੋਪਾਲੈ ਸੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਦੇ ਲਿਆਏ ॥੧੩॥

gopaalai su dharam de liaae |13|

I had sent Sangatia Singh there for making peace (among the chief), he brought Gopal on oath of God.13.

ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਉਨ ਕੀ ਬਨੀ ॥

tin kai sang na un kee banee |

ਤਬ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਚਿਤ ਮੋ ਇਹ ਗਨੀ ॥

tab kripaal chit mo ih ganee |

But he could not reconcile with them then Kirpal thought within his mind:

ਐਸਿ ਘਾਤਿ ਫਿਰ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਐਹੈ ॥

ais ghaat fir haath na aihai |

ਸਬਹੂੰ ਫੇਰ ਸਮੋ ਛਲਿ ਜੈਹੈ ॥੧੪॥

sabahoon fer samo chhal jaihai |14|

That such an opportunity will not be available again, because the circle of time deceives everybody.14.

ਗੋਪਾਲੈ ਸੁ ਅਬੈ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥

gopaalai su abai geh leejai |

ਕੈਦ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਕੈ ਬਧ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

kaid keejeeai kai badh keejai |

He decided to catch hold of Gopal immediately, either to imprision him or kill him.

ਤਨਕ ਭਨਕ ਜਬ ਤਿਨ ਸੁਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

tanak bhanak jab tin sun paaee |

ਨਿਜ ਦਲ ਜਾਤ ਭਯੋ ਭਟਰਾਈ ॥੧੫॥

nij dal jaat bhayo bhattaraaee |15|

When Gopal got scent of the conspiracy, he escaped to his people (forces).15.

When Gopal was gone, Kirpal was filled with anger.

ਹਿੰਮਤ ਹੁਸੈਨ ॥

ਜੁੰਮੈ ਲੁਝੈਨ ॥੧੬॥

junmai lujhain |16|

Himmat and Hussain rushed for fighting in the field.16.

ਕਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਮਾਨ ॥

kar ke gumaan |

ਜੁੰਮੈ ਜੁਆਨ ॥

junmai juaan |

With great pride, more warriors followed.

ਬੱਜੇ ਤੱਬਲ ॥

ਦੁੰਦਭਿ ਦੱਬਲ ॥੧੭॥

The drums and trumpets resounded.17.

ਬੱਜੇ ਨਿਸਾਣ ॥

ਨੱਚੇ ਕਿਕਾਣ ॥

On the other side, the trumpets also resounded and the horses danced in the battlefield.

ਬਾਹੈ ਤੜਾਕ ॥

ਉੱਠੈ ਕੜਾਕ ॥੧੮॥

The warriors enthusiastically strike their weapons, creating clattering sound.18.

ਬੱਜੇ ਨਿਸੰਗ ॥

ਗੱਜੇ ਨਿਹੰਗ ॥

gaje nihang |

The fearless warriors blow their horns and shout loudly.

ਛੁੱਟੈ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ॥

ਲਿੱਟੈ ਜੁਆਨ ॥੧੯॥

The swords are struck and the warriors are lying on the ground.19.

ਤੁੱਪਕ ਤੜਾਕ ॥

The guns, arrows, lances and axes create noises.

ਸੈਹਥੀ ਸੜਾਕ ॥

The warriors shout.20.

ਗੱਜੇ ਸੁ ਬੀਰ ॥

The heroes who stand firmly in the field, thunder.

ਬਿਚਰੇ ਨਿਹੰਗ ॥

The fighters move in the field like leopards.21.

ਹੁੰਕੇ ਕਿਕਾਣ ॥

ਧੁੰਕੇ ਨਿਸਾਣ ॥

dhunke nisaan |

The horses neigh and the trumpets resound.

ਬਾਹੈ ਤੜਾਕ ॥

ਝੱਲੈ ਝੜਾਕ ॥੨੨॥

The warriors strike their weapons enthusiastically and also endure the blows.22.

ਜੁੱਝੇ ਨਿਹੰਗ ॥

jujhe nihang |

ਲਿੱਟੇ ਮਲੰਗ ॥

The warriors falling as martyrs appear like the carefree intoxicated persons lying down of the ground.

ਖੁਲ੍ਹੇ ਕਿਸਾਰ ॥

khulhe kisaar |

ਜਨੁ ਜਟਾਧਾਰ ॥੨੩॥

jan jattaadhaar |23|

Their disheveled hair appear like the matted hair (of hermits).23.

The huge elephants are decorated and the warrior-chiefs descending from them and holding their bows, thunder in the field.24.

ਪੰਖੀ ਬਿਰਖਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੜਾ ਸਚੁ ਚੁਗੈ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥

pankhee birakh suhaavarraa sach chugai gur bhaae |

The soul-bird in the beautiful tree of the body pecks at Truth, with love for the Guru.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਹੈ ਉਡੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

har ras peevai sehaj rahai uddai na aavai jaae |

She drinks in the Sublime Essence of the Lord, and abides in intuitive ease; she does not fly around coming and going.

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥

nij ghar vaasaa paaeaa har har naam samaae |1|

She obtains her home within her own heart; she is absorbed into the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

man re gur kee kaar kamaae |

O mind, work to serve the Guru.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

gur kai bhaanai je chaleh taa anadin raacheh har naae |1| rahaau |

If you walk in harmony with the Guru's Will, you shall remain immersed in the Lord's Name, night and day. ||1||Pause||

ਪੰਖੀ ਬਿਰਖ ਸੁਹਾਵੜੇ ਊਡਹਿ ਚਹੁ ਦਿਸਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

pankhee birakh suhaavarre aooddeh chahu dis jaeh |

The birds in the beautiful trees fly around in all four directions.

ਜੇਤਾ ਊਡਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਘਣੇ ਨਿਤ ਦਾਝਹਿ ਤੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਹਿ ॥

jetaa aooddeh dukh ghane nit daajheh tai bilalaeh |

The more they fly around, the more they suffer; they burn and cry out in pain.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਨਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

bin gur mehal na jaapee naa amrit fal paeh |2|

Without the Guru, they do not find the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, and they do not obtain the Ambrosial Fruit. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

guramukh braham hareeaavalaa saachai sehaj subhaae |

The Gurmukh is like God's tree, always green, blessed with the Sublime Love of the True One, with intuitive peace and poise.

ਸਾਖਾ ਤੀਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਆ ਏਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

saakhaa teen nivaareea ek sabad liv laae |

He cuts off the three branches of the three qualities, and embraces love for the One Word of the Shabad.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਖਵਾਇ ॥੩॥

amrit fal har ek hai aape dee khavaae |3|

The Lord alone is the Ambrosial Fruit; He Himself gives it to us to eat. ||3||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਊਭੇ ਸੁਕਿ ਗਏ ਨਾ ਫਲੁ ਤਿੰਨਾ ਛਾਉ ॥

manamukh aoobhe suk ge naa fal tinaa chhaau |

The self-willed manmukhs stand there and dry up; they do not bear any fruit, and they do not provide any shade.

ਤਿੰਨਾ ਪਾਸਿ ਨ ਬੈਸੀਐ ਓਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਨ ਗਿਰਾਉ ॥

tinaa paas na baiseeai onaa ghar na giraau |

Don't even bother to sit near them-they have no home or village.

ਕਟੀਅਹਿ ਤੈ ਨਿਤ ਜਾਲੀਅਹਿ ਓਨਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥

katteeeh tai nit jaaleeeh onaa sabad na naau |4|

They are cut down and burnt each day; they have neither the Shabad, nor the Lord's Name. ||4||

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਫਿਰਾਉ ॥

hukame karam kamaavane peiai kirat firaau |

According to the Lord's Command, people perform their actions; they wander around, driven by the karma of their past actions.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਣਾ ਜਹ ਭੇਜਹਿ ਤਹ ਜਾਉ ॥

hukame darasan dekhanaa jeh bhejeh teh jaau |

By the Lord's Command, they behold the Blessed Vision of His Darshan. Wherever He sends them, there they go.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੫॥

hukame har har man vasai hukame sach samaau |5|

By His Command, the Lord, Har, Har, abides within our minds; by His Command we merge in Truth. ||5||

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਬਪੁੜੇ ਭੂਲੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥

hukam na jaaneh bapurre bhoole fireh gavaar |

The wretched fools do not know the Lord's Will; they wander around making mistakes.

ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਹਿ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

manahatth karam kamaavade nit nit hohi khuaar |

They go about their business stubborn-mindedly; they are disgraced forever and ever.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾ ਸਚਿ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੬॥

antar saant na aavee naa sach lagai piaar |6|

Inner peace does not come to them; they do not embrace love for the True Lord. ||6||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀਆ ਮੁਹ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

guramukheea muh sohane gur kai het piaar |

Beautiful are the faces of the Gurmukhs, who bear love and affection for the Guru.

ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥

sachee bhagatee sach rate dar sachai sachiaar |

Through true devotional worship, they are attuned to Truth; at the True Door, they are found to be true.

ਆਏ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਕੁਲ ਕਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥੭॥

aae se paravaan hai sabh kul kaa kareh udhaar |7|

Blessed is their coming into being; they redeem all their ancestors. ||7||

ਸਭ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

sabh nadaree karam kamaavade nadaree baahar na koe |

All do their deeds under the Lord's Glance of Grace; no one is beyond His Vision.

ਜੈਸੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਚਾ ਤੈਸਾ ਹੀ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥

jaisee nadar kar dekhai sachaa taisaa hee ko hoe |

According to the Glance of Grace with which the True Lord beholds us, so do we become.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਾਈਆ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥੩॥੨੦॥

naanak naam vaddaaeea karam paraapat hoe |8|3|20|

O Nanak, the Glorious Greatness of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is received only by His Mercy. ||8||3||20||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

guramukh naam dhiaaeeai manamukh boojh na paae |

The Gurmukhs meditate on the Naam; the self-willed manmukhs do not understand.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥

guramukh sadaa mukh aoojale har vasiaa man aae |

The faces of the Gurmukhs are always radiant; the Lord has come to dwell within their minds.

ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥

sahaje hee sukh paaeeai sahaje rahai samaae |1|

Through intuitive understanding they are at peace, and through intuitive understanding they remain absorbed in the Lord. ||1||

ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

bhaaee re daasan daasaa hoe |

O Siblings of Destiny, be the slaves of the Lord's slaves.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

gur kee sevaa gur bhagat hai viralaa paae koe |1| rahaau |

Service to the Guru is worship of the Guru. How rare are those who obtain it! ||1||Pause||

ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਗੁ ਸੁਹਾਗਣੀ ਜੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥

sadaa suhaag suhaaganee je chaleh satigur bhaae |

The happy soul-bride is always with her Husband Lord, if she walks in harmony with the Will of the True Guru.

ਸਦਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

sadaa pir nihachal paaeeai naa ohu marai na jaae |

She attains her Eternal, Ever-stable Husband, who never dies or goes away.

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਨਾ ਵੀਛੁੜੈ ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

sabad milee naa veechhurrai pir kai ank samaae |2|

United with the Word of the Shabad, she shall not be separated again. She is immersed in the Lap of her Beloved. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਤਿ ਊਜਲਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

har niramal at aoojalaa bin gur paaeaa na jaae |

The Lord is Immaculate and Radiantly Bright; without the Guru, He cannot be found.

ਪਾਠੁ ਪੜੈ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਈ ਭੇਖੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥

paatth parrai naa boojhee bhekhee bharam bhulaae |

He cannot be understood by reading scriptures; the deceitful pretenders are deluded by doubt.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥

guramatee har sadaa paaeaa rasanaa har ras samaae |3|

Through the Guru's Teachings, the Lord is always found, and the tongue is permeated with the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||3||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

maaeaa mohu chukaaeaa guramatee sehaj subhaae |

Emotional attachment to Maya is shed with intuitive ease, through the Guru's Teachings.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਜਗੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਫਿਰੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਗਈ ਖਾਇ ॥

bin sabadai jag dukheea firai manamukhaa no gee khaae |

Without the Shabad, the world wanders lost in pain. The self-willed manmukh is consumed.

ਸਬਦੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਬਦੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥

sabade naam dhiaaeeai sabade sach samaae |4|

Through the Shabad, meditate on the Naam; through the Shabad, you shall merge in Truth. ||4||

ਮਾਇਆ ਭੂਲੇ ਸਿਧ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

maaeaa bhoole sidh fireh samaadh na lagai subhaae |

The Siddhas wander around, deluded by Maya; they are not absorbed in the Samaadhi of the Lord's Sublime Love.

ਤੀਨੇ ਲੋਅ ਵਿਆਪਤ ਹੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਹੀ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥

teene loa viaapat hai adhik rahee lapattaae |

The three worlds are permeated by Maya; they are totally covered by it.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥

bin gur mukat na paaeeai naa dubidhaa maaeaa jaae |5|

Without the Guru, liberation is not attained, and the double-mindedness of Maya does not go away. ||5||

ਮਾਇਆ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

maaeaa kis no aakheeai kiaa maaeaa karam kamaae |

What is called Maya? What does Maya do?

ਦੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਿ ਏਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਬਧੁ ਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

dukh sukh ehu jeeo badh hai haumai karam kamaae |

These beings are bound by pleasure and pain; they do their deeds in egotism.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਨਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥

bin sabadai bharam na chookee naa vichahu haumai jaae |6|

Without the Shabad, doubt is not dispelled, and egotism is not eliminated from within. ||6||

ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

bin preetee bhagat na hovee bin sabadai thaae na paae |

Without love, there is no devotional worship. Without the Shabad, no one finds acceptance.

ਸਬਦੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

sabade haumai maareeai maaeaa kaa bhram jaae |

Through the Shabad, egotism is conquered and subdued, and the illusion of Maya is dispelled.

ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੭॥

naam padaarath paaeeai guramukh sehaj subhaae |7|

The Gurmukh obtains the Treasure of the Naam with intuitive ease. ||7||

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਣ ਨ ਜਾਪਨੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

bin gur gun na jaapanee bin gun bhagat na hoe |

Without the Guru, one's virtues do not shine forth; without virtue, there is no devotional worship.

ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥

bhagat vachhal har man vasiaa sehaj miliaa prabh soe |

The Lord is the Lover of His devotees; He abides within their minds. They meet that God with intuitive ease.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥੪॥੨੧॥

naanak sabade har saalaaheeai karam paraapat hoe |8|4|21|

O Nanak, through the Shabad, praise the Lord. By His Grace, He is obtained. ||8||4||21||
