ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਸਰਬ ਛਿਤ ਕੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥
eih bhaat sarab chhit ke nripaal |
ਸੰਨ︀ਯਾਸ ਜੋਗ ਲਾਗੇ ਉਤਾਲ ॥
sanayaas jog laage utaal |
In this way, all the kings of the earth immediately joined the path of Sannyas and Yoga
ਇਕ ਕਰੈ ਲਾਗਿ ਨਿਵਲਿ ਆਦਿ ਕਰਮ ॥
eik karai laag nival aad karam |
ਇਕ ਧਰਤ ਧਿਆਨ ਲੈ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਚਰਮ ॥੧੪੨॥
eik dharat dhiaan lai basatr charam |142|
Someone performed the Neoli Karma (purging of insestines) and someone wearing the garments of hide, was absorbed in meditation.142.
ਇਕ ਧਰਤ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਲਕਲਨ ਅੰਗਿ ॥

ਇਕ ਰਹਤ ਕਲਪ ਇਸਥਿਤ ਉਤੰਗ ॥
eik rehat kalap isathit utang |
Someone is wearing the garments of a recluse and someone is standing straight with a special notion
ਇਕ ਕਰਤ ਅਲਪ ਦੁਗਧਾ ਅਹਾਰ ॥
eik karat alap dugadhaa ahaar |
ਇਕ ਰਹਤ ਬਰਖ ਬਹੁ ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰ ॥੧੪੩॥
eik rehat barakh bahu niraahaar |143|
Someone subsists only on milk and someone abides without eating and srinking.143.
ਇਕ ਰਹਤ ਮੋਨ ਮੋਨੀ ਮਹਾਨ ॥
eik rehat mon monee mahaan |
ਇਕ ਕਰਤ ਨ︀ਯਾਸ ਤਜਿ ਖਾਨ ਪਾਨ ॥
eik karat nayaas taj khaan paan |
Those great saints observed silence and many practiced Yoga without eating and drinking
ਇਕ ਰਹਤ ਏਕ ਪਗ ਨਿਰਾਧਾਰ ॥
eik rehat ek pag niraadhaar |
ਇਕ ਬਸਤ ਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਕਾਨਨ ਪਹਾਰ ॥੧੪੪॥
eik basat graam kaanan pahaar |144|
Many stood on one foot without and support and many resided in villages, forests and mountains.144.
ਇਕ ਕਰਤ ਕਸਟ ਕਰ ਧੂਮ੍ਰ ਪਾਨ ॥
eik karat kasatt kar dhoomr paan |
ਇਕ ਕਰਤ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿਨ ਸਨਾਨ ॥
eik karat bhaat bhaatin sanaan |
Many taking in smoke endured suffering and many took baths of different kinds
ਇਕ ਰਹਤ ਇਕ ਪਗ ਜੁਗ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ॥
eik rehat ik pag jug pramaan |
ਕਈ ਊਰਧ ਬਾਹ ਮੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਮਹਾਨ ॥੧੪੫॥
kee aooradh baah mun man mahaan |145|
Many stood on their foot for ages and many great sages turned their arms upwards.145.
ਇਕ ਰਹਤ ਬੈਠਿ ਜਲਿ ਮਧਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
eik rehat baitth jal madh jaae |
ਇਕ ਤਪਤ ਆਗਿ ਊਰਧ ਜਰਾਇ ॥
eik tapat aag aooradh jaraae |
Someone sat down in water and many made themselves warm by burning fire
ਇਕ ਕਰਤ ਨ︀ਯਾਸ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ॥
eik karat nayaas bahu bidh prakaar |
ਇਕ ਰਹਤ ਏਕ ਆਸਾ ਅਧਾਰ ॥੧੪੬॥
eik rehat ek aasaa adhaar |146|
Someone practiced various postures and someone continued to live on the strength of one desire.146.
ਕੇਈ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨੀਚ ਨਹੀ ਕਰਤ ਡੀਠ ॥
keee kabahoon neech nahee karat ddeetth |
ਕੇਈ ਤਪਤ ਆਗਿ ਪਰ ਜਾਰ ਪੀਠ ॥
keee tapat aag par jaar peetth |
There are many who do not see below and many warm themselves by burning fire on their back
ਕੇਈ ਬੈਠ ਕਰਤ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਚਰਜ ਦਾਨ ॥
keee baitth karat brat charaj daan |
ਕੇਈ ਧਰਤ ਚਿਤ ਏਕੈ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥੧੪੭॥
keee dharat chit ekai nidhaan |147|
Some sit down and hold fasts and bestow charities and many are absorbed only in One Lord.147.
ਕੇਈ ਕਰਤ ਜਗਿ ਅਰੁ ਹੋਮ ਦਾਨ ॥
keee karat jag ar hom daan |
ਕੇਈ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਿਧਵਤਿ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥
keee bhaat bhaat bidhavat isanaan |
Many take bath according to Shastric injuctions in various ways
ਕੇਈ ਧਰਤ ਜਾਇ ਲੈ ਪਿਸਟ ਪਾਨ ॥
keee dharat jaae lai pisatt paan |
ਕੇਈ ਦੇਤ ਕਰਮ ਕੀ ਛਾਡਿ ਬਾਨ ॥੧੪੮॥

And many are busy in Yajnas charities and hom many are standing with their hands touching the earth at their back and many forsaking crores of rupees are donating whatever they have with th

Many are sitting in Supreme Light and many are roaming unattached on mountain and in the forest
ਕੇਈ ਰਹਤ ਏਕ ਆਸਨ ਅਡੋਲ ॥

ਕੇਈ ਜਪਤ ਬੈਠਿ ਮੁਖ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਅਮੋਲ ॥੧੪੯॥

Many are sitting in one posture and many are reciting mantras.149.
ਕੇਈ ਕਰਤ ਬੈਠਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
keee karat baitth har har uchaar |
ਕੇਈ ਕਰਤ ਪਾਠ ਮੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਉਦਾਰ ॥
keee karat paatth mun man udaar |
Some are uttering the Name of the Lord while sitting and some sages are reading the religious text with a generous heart
ਕੇਈ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਵ ਭਗਵਤ ਭਜੰਤ ॥
keee bhagat bhaav bhagavat bhajant |
ਕੇਈ ਰਿਚਾ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਟੰਤ ॥੧੫੦॥
keee richaa bed sinmrit rattant |150|
Many are meditating on the Lord with devotion and many are repeating the Vedic verses and Smritis.150.
ਕੇਈ ਏਕ ਪਾਨ ਅਸਥਿਤ ਅਡੋਲ ॥
keee ek paan asathit addol |
ਕੇਈ ਜਪਤ ਜਾਪ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤ ਖੋਲਿ ॥
keee japat jaap man chit khol |
Many are standing on one hand and many are reciting mantras with fullness of mind
ਕੇਈ ਰਹਤ ਏਕ ਮਨ ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰ ॥
keee rehat ek man niraahaar |
ਇਕ ਭਛਤ ਪਉਨ ਮੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਉਦਾਰ ॥੧੫੧॥
eik bhachhat paun mun man udaar |151|
Many go without food and many sages only subsist on air.151.
ਇਕ ਕਰਤ ਨਿਆਸ ਆਸਾ ਬਿਹੀਨ ॥
eik karat niaas aasaa biheen |
ਇਕ ਰਹਤ ਏਕ ਭਗਵਤ ਅਧੀਨ ॥
eik rehat ek bhagavat adheen |
Many are sitting in postures, abandoning their desires and expectations and many have resigned themselves to the support of the Lord
ਇਕ ਕਰਤ ਨੈਕੁ ਬਨ ਫਲ ਅਹਾਰ ॥
eik karat naik ban fal ahaar |
ਇਕ ਰਟਤ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਆਮਾ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੧੫੨॥
eik rattat naam siaamaa apaar |152|
Many are subsisting on small quantity of fruit in the forest and many are only repeating the Name of the Lord.152.
ਇਕ ਏਕ ਆਸ ਆਸਾ ਬਿਰਹਤ ॥
eik ek aas aasaa birahat |
ਇਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਭਾਤਿ ਦੁਖ ਦੇਹ ਸਹਤ ॥
eik bahut bhaat dukh deh sehat |
Many are abiding only with the hope of meeting the Lord and many are enduring many kinds of sufferings
ਇਕ ਕਹਤ ਏਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਕਥਾਨ ॥
eik kehat ek har ko kathaan |
ਇਕ ਮੁਕਤ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਵਤ ਨਿਦਾਨ ॥੧੫੩॥
eik mukat patr paavat nidaan |153|
Many are busy in speaking a discourse of the Lord and many are ultimately obtaining salvation.153.
ਇਕ ਪਰੇ ਸਰਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
eik pare saran har ke duaar |
ਇਕ ਰਹਤ ਤਾਸੁ ਨਾਮੈ ਅਧਾਰ ॥
eik rehat taas naamai adhaar |
Many have come under the refuge of the Lord and their support is only the name of the Lord
ਇਕ ਜਪਤ ਨਾਮ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦੁਰੰਤ ॥
eik japat naam taa ko durant |
ਇਕ ਅੰਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਾਵਤ ਬਿਅੰਤ ॥੧੫੪॥
eik ant mukat paavat biant |154|
Many are repeating His Name and are ultimately obtaining salvation.154.
ਇਕ ਕਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
eik karat naam nis din uchaar |
ਇਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਹੋਤ੍ਰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥
eik agan hotr brahamaa bichaar |
Many are uttering the Name of the Lord day and night and many adopting the thought of the Lord in their mind, are performing Agnihotra (the rite of fire-offering)
ਇਕ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਰਬ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਰਟੰਤ ॥
eik saasatr sarab simrit rattant |
ਇਕ ਸਾਧ ਰੀਤਿ ਨਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਚਲੰਤ ॥੧੫੫॥
eik saadh reet nis din chalant |155|
Many are repeating for memory the Shastras and Smritis and many are continuously observing
ਇਕ ਹੋਮ ਦਾਨ ਅਰੁ ਬੇਦ ਰੀਤਿ ॥
eik hom daan ar bed reet |
ਇਕ ਰਟਤ ਬੈਠਿ ਖਟ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਮੀਤ ॥
eik rattat baitth khatt saasatr meet |
Many are performing the acts of hom and charity according to Vedic injunctions and many friends sitting together are cramming the six Shastras
ਇਕ ਕਰਤ ਬੇਦ ਚਾਰੋ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
eik karat bed chaaro uchaar |
ਇਕ ਗਿਆਨ ਗਾਥ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੧੫੬॥
eik giaan gaath mahimaa apaar |156|
Many are reciting the four Vedas and are describing the infinite greatness of the discussion about knowledge.15
ਇਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਮਿਸਟਾਨ ਭੋਜ ॥
eik bhaat bhaat misattaan bhoj |
ਬਹੁ ਦੀਨ ਬੋਲਿ ਭਛ ਦੇਤ ਰੋਜ ॥
bahu deen bol bhachh det roj |
Many are ever calling lowly and afflicted ones and serving them sweets and food
ਕੇਈ ਕਰਤ ਬੈਠਿ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਪਾਠ ॥
keee karat baitth bahu bhaat paatth |
ਕਈ ਅੰਨਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਚਾਬੰਤ ਕਾਠ ॥੧੫੭॥
kee an tiaag chaabant kaatth |157|
Many are busy in reciting the religious texts in various ways and many forsaking the corn, are just chewing the wood.157.

Third Mehl:
ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੋਵੈ ॥
sahaje jaagai sahaje sovai |
He wakes in peace, and he sleeps in peace.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
guramukh anadin usatat hovai |
The Gurmukh praises the Lord night and day.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮੈ ਸਹਸਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
manamukh bharamai sahasaa hovai |
The self-willed manmukh remains deluded by his doubts.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਸੋਵੈ ॥
antar chintaa need na sovai |
He is filled with anxiety, and he cannot even sleep.
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਾਗਹਿ ਸਵਹਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
giaanee jaageh saveh subhaae |
The spiritually wise wake and sleep in peace.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤਿਆ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੨॥
naanak naam ratiaa bal jaau |2|
Nanak is a sacrifice to those who are imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਤਿਆ ॥
se har naam dhiaaveh jo har ratiaa |
They alone meditate on the Lord's Name, who are imbued with the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਇਕੋ ਹਰਿ ਸਤਿਆ ॥
har ik dhiaaveh ik iko har satiaa |
They meditate on the One Lord; the One and Only Lord is True.
ਹਰਿ ਇਕੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਇਕੁ ਇਕੋ ਉਤਪਤਿਆ ॥
har iko varatai ik iko utapatiaa |
The One Lord is pervading everywhere; the One Lord created the Universe.
ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਡਰੁ ਸਟਿ ਘਤਿਆ ॥
jo har naam dhiaaveh tin ddar satt ghatiaa |
Those who meditate on the Lord's Name, cast out their fears.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਦੇਵੈ ਆਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਆ ॥੯॥
guramatee devai aap guramukh har japiaa |9|
The Lord Himself blesses them with Guru's Instruction; the Gurmukh meditates on the Lord. ||9||

Salok, Third Mehl:
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
antar giaan na aaeo jit kichh sojhee paae |
Spiritual wisdom, which would bring understanding, does not enter into his mind.
ਵਿਣੁ ਡਿਠਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
vin dditthaa kiaa saalaaheeai andhaa andh kamaae |
Without seeing, how can he praise the Lord? The blind act in blindness.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥
naanak sabad pachhaaneeai naam vasai man aae |1|
O Nanak, when one realizes the Word of the Shabad, then the Naam comes to abide in the mind. ||1||

ਇਕਾ ਬਾਣੀ ਇਕੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਇਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
eikaa baanee ik gur iko sabad veechaar |
There is One Bani; there is One Guru; there is one Shabad to contemplate.
ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਹਟੁ ਸਚੁ ਰਤਨੀ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥
sachaa saudaa hatt sach ratanee bhare bhanddaar |
True is the merchandise, and true is the shop; the warehouses are overflowing with jewels.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਅਨਿ ਜੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
gur kirapaa te paaeean je devai devanahaar |
By Guru's Grace, they are obtained, if the Great Giver gives them.
ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਖਟਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
sachaa saudaa laabh sadaa khattiaa naam apaar |
Dealing in this true merchandise, one earns the profit of the incomparable Naam.
ਵਿਖੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਆ ਕਰਮਿ ਪੀਆਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
vikh vich amrit pragattiaa karam peeaavanahaar |
In the midst of poison, the Ambrosial Nectar is revealed; by His Mercy, one drinks it in.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak sach salaaheeai dhan savaaranahaar |2|
O Nanak, praise the True Lord; blessed is the Creator, the Embellisher. ||2||

Pauree:
ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ॥
jinaa andar koorr varatai sach na bhaavee |
Those who are permeated by falsehood, do not love the Truth.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਕੂੜਾ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਵਈ ॥
je ko bolai sach koorraa jal jaavee |
If someone speaks the Truth, falsehood is burnt away.
ਕੂੜਿਆਰੀ ਰਜੈ ਕੂੜਿ ਜਿਉ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਕਾਗੁ ਖਾਵਈ ॥
koorriaaree rajai koorr jiau visattaa kaag khaavee |
The false are satisfied by falsehood, like the crows who eat manure.
ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਸੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਈ ॥
jis har hoe kripaal so naam dhiaavee |
When the Lord grants His Grace, then one meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵਈ ॥੧੦॥
har guramukh naam araadh koorr paap leh jaavee |10|
As Gurmukh, worship the Lord's Name in adoration; fraud and sin shall disappear. ||10||

Salok, Third Mehl:
ਸੇਖਾ ਚਉਚਕਿਆ ਚਉਵਾਇਆ ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣਿ ॥
sekhaa chauchakiaa chauvaaeaa ehu man ikat ghar aan |
O Shaykh, you wander in the four directions, blown by the four winds; bring your mind back to the home of the One Lord.
ਏਹੜ ਤੇਹੜ ਛਡਿ ਤੂ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
eeharr teharr chhadd too gur kaa sabad pachhaan |
Renounce your petty arguments, and realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਢਹਿ ਪਉ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
satigur agai dteh pau sabh kichh jaanai jaan |
Bow in humble respect before the True Guru; He is the Knower who knows everything.
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਜਲਾਇ ਤੂ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੁ ਮਿਹਮਾਣੁ ॥
aasaa manasaa jalaae too hoe rahu mihamaan |
Burn away your hopes and desires, and live like a guest in this world.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਭੀ ਚਲਹਿ ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਣੁ ॥
satigur kai bhaanai bhee chaleh taa daragah paaveh maan |
If you walk in harmony with the True Guru's Will, then you shall be honored in the Court of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਤਿਨ ਧਿਗੁ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਧਿਗੁ ਖਾਣੁ ॥੧॥
naanak ji naam na chetanee tin dhig painan dhig khaan |1|
O Nanak, those who do not contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord - cursed are their clothes, and cursed is their food. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

There is no end to the Lord's Glorious Praises; His worth cannot be described.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak guramukh har gun raveh gun meh rahai samaae |2|
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they are absorbed in His Glorious Virtues. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਚੋਲੀ ਦੇਹ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਕਢਿ ਪੈਧੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ॥

The Lord has adorned the coat of the body; He has embroidered it with devotional worship.
ਹਰਿ ਪਾਟੁ ਲਗਾ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਬਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਿ ॥
har paatt lagaa adhikaaee bahu bahu bidh bhaat kar |
The Lord has woven His silk into it, in so many ways and fashions.
ਕੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੂਝਣਹਾਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਕਰਿ ॥
koee boojhai boojhanahaaraa antar bibek kar |
How rare is that man of understanding, who understands, and deliberates within.
ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਹੁ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਹਰਿ ॥
so boojhai ehu bibek jis bujhaae aap har |
He alone understands these deliberations, whom the Lord Himself inspires to understand.
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਤਿ ਹਰਿ ॥੧੧॥
jan naanak kahai vichaaraa guramukh har sat har |11|
Poor servant Nanak speaks: the Gurmukhs know the Lord, the Lord is True. ||11||
