ROOAAL STANZA

ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸਨ ਕੇ ਸਬੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਆਨਿ ਕੈ ਤਹਿ ਠਉਰ ॥

des desan ke sabai nrip aan kai teh tthaur |

ਜਾਨਿ ਪਾਨ ਪਰੈ ਸਬੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਦਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਰਮਉਰ ॥

jaan paan parai sabai gur dat sree sarmaur |

The kings of various countries from far and near fell at the feet of the supreme Guru Dutt at that place

ਤਿਆਗਿ ਅਉਰ ਨਏ ਮਤਿ ਏਕ ਹੀ ਮਤਿ ਠਾਨ ॥

tiaag aaur ne mat ek hee mat tthaan |

They all abandoned the new sects and joined the one sect of Yoga

ਆਨਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਮੁੰਡਾਤ ਭੇ ਸਭ ਰਾਜ ਪਾਟ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥੧੩੫॥

aan moondd munddaat bhe sabh raaj paatt nidhaan |135|

They abandoned their royal responsibilities and came to get done their tonsure ceremony.135.

ਆਨਿ ਆਨਿ ਲਗੇ ਸਬੈ ਪਗ ਜਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥

aan aan lage sabai pag jaan kai guradev |

ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਬੈ ਭ੍ਰਿਤਾਬਰ ਅਨੰਤ ਰੂਪ ਅਭੇਵ ॥

sasatr saasatr sabai bhritaabar anant roop abhev |

All of them, considering him as the Supreme Guru, came to bow at his feet and Dutt was also the great purusha comprehending the secret of weapons and Shastras

ਅਛਿਦ ਗਾਤ ਅਛਿਜ ਰੂਪ ਅਭਿਦ ਜੋਗ ਦੁਰੰਤ ॥

achhid gaat achhij roop abhid jog durant |

His body was invincible, the form indestructible and he had achieved oneness in Yoga

ਅਮਿਤ ਉਜਲ ਅਜਿਤ ਪਰਮ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਸੁ ਦਤ ਮਹੰਤ ॥੧੩੬॥

amit ujal ajit param upajio su dat mahant |136|

He has manifested himself in the form of unlimited, lustrous and unconquerable power.136.

ਪੇਖਿ ਰੂਪ ਚਕੇ ਚਰਾਚਰ ਸਰਬ ਬ︀ਯੋਮ ਬਿਮਾਨ ॥

pekh roop chake charaachar sarab bayom bimaan |

The animate and inanimate creation and the gods of heaven, were wonder-struck on seeing his figure and

ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਰਹੇ ਨਰਾਧਪ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਰੂਪ ਸਮਾਨ ॥

jatr tatr rahe naraadhap chitr roop samaan |

The kings looked splendid like the pretty portraits here and there

ਅਤ੍ਰ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਕੋ ਤਜਿ ਜੋਗ ਲੈ ਸੰਨ︀ਯਾਸ ॥

atr chhatr nripat ko taj jog lai sanayaas |

They all had forsaken their arms and canopies, had been initiated into Sannyas and Yoga and

ਆਨਿ ਆਨਿ ਕਰੈ ਲਗੇ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਉਦਾਸ ॥੧੩੭॥

aan aan karai lage hvai jatr tatr udaas |137|

Had come to him as ascetics from all directions and were there at his feet.137.

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਉਪਿੰਦ੍ਰ ਚਕੇ ਸਬੈ ਚਿਤ ਚਉਕਿਯੋ ਸਸਿ ਭਾਨੁ ॥

eindr upindr chake sabai chit chaukiyo sas bhaan |

Indra, Upendra, Surya, Chandra etc. all marveled in their mind and

ਲੈ ਨ ਦਤ ਛਨਾਇ ਆਜ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਮੋਰ ਮਹਾਨ ॥

lai na dat chhanaae aaj nripat mor mahaan |

Were thinking that the great Dutt may not seize their kingdom

ਰੀਝ ਰੀਝ ਰਹੇ ਜਹਾ ਤਹਾ ਸਰਬ ਬ︀ਯੋਮ ਬਿਮਾਨ ॥

reejh reejh rahe jahaa tahaa sarab bayom bimaan |

All were getting pleased in the sky, sitting in their vehicles and

ਜਾਨ ਜਾਨ ਸਬੈ ਪਰੇ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਦਤ ਮਹਾਨ ॥੧੩੮॥

jaan jaan sabai pare guradev dat mahaan |138|

Were considering Dutt as the great Guru.138.

ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਦਿਸਾ ਵਿਸਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰਾਜ ਸਾਜ ਬਿਸਾਰ ॥

jatr tatr disaa visaa nrip raaj saaj bisaar |

ਆਨਿ ਆਨਿ ਸਬੋ ਗਹੇ ਪਗ ਦਤ ਦੇਵ ਉਦਾਰ ॥

aan aan sabo gahe pag dat dev udaar |

Here and there, in all the directions, the kings, forgetting their royal responsibilities, had caught the feet of the supremely generous Dutt

ਜਾਨਿ ਜਾਨਿ ਸੁ ਧਰਮ ਕੋ ਘਰ ਮਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥

jaan jaan su dharam ko ghar maan kai guradev |

Considering him as the treasure of dharma and the great Guru,

ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਨ ਸਬੈ ਲਗੇ ਮਨ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ॥੧੩੯॥

preet maan sabai lage man chhaadd kai ahamev |139|

All had abandoned their ego and had dedicated themselves affectionately in his service.139.

ਰਾਜ ਸਾਜ ਸਬੈ ਤਜੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਭੇਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਨ︀ਯਾਸ ॥

raaj saaj sabai taje nrip bhes kai sanayaas |

The kings had worn the garb of Sannyas and Yoga, leaving their royal responsibilities and

ਆਨਿ ਜੋਗ ਕਰੈ ਲਗੇ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਉਦਾਸ ॥

aan jog karai lage hvai jatr tatr udaas |

Becoming unattached, they had begun the practice of Yoga

ਮੰਡਿ ਅੰਗਿ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਉਜਲ ਸੀਸ ਜੂਟ ਜਟਾਨ ॥

mandd ang bibhoot ujal sees joott jattaan |

Smearing their bodies with ashes and wearing matted locks on their heads,

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਨ ਸੌ ਸੁਭੇ ਸਭ ਰਾਜ ਪਾਟ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥੧੪੦॥

bhaat bhaatan sau subhe sabh raaj paatt nidhaan |140|

Various types of kings had gathered there.140.

ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ॥

jatr tatr bisaar sanpat putr mitr kalatr |

All the kings, leaving their property, wealth, son friends and the attachment of he queens,

ਭੇਸ ਲੈ ਸੰਨ︀ਯਾਸ ਕੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਜਯ ਪਤ੍ਰ ॥

bhes lai sanayaas ko nrip chhaadd kai jay patr |

Their honours and victories, they adopted Sannyas and Yoga and have come there

ਬਾਜ ਰਾਜ ਸਮਾਜ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਛਾਡ ਕੇ ਗਜ ਰਾਜ ॥

baaj raaj samaaj sundar chhaadd ke gaj raaj |

They came and sat there as ascetics here and there gathering together from all directions,

ਆਨਿ ਆਨਿ ਬਸੇ ਮਹਾ ਬਨਿ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਉਦਾਸ ॥੧੪੧॥

aan aan base mahaa ban jatr tatr udaas |141|

Leaving behind elephants and horses and their fine society.141.

Pauree:

ਏਹ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਰਾਣੇ ਰੰਗ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ॥

eeh bhoopat raane rang din chaar suhaavanaa |

The pleasures of kings and emperors are pleasing, but they last for only a few days.

ਏਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥

ehu maaeaa rang kasunbh khin meh leh jaavanaa |

These pleasures of Maya are like the color of the safflower, which wears off in a moment.

ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਪਾਪ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥

chaladiaa naal na chalai sir paap lai jaavanaa |

They do not go with him when he departs; instead, he carries the load of sins upon his head.

ਜਾਂ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਕਾਲਿ ਤਾਂ ਖਰਾ ਡਰਾਵਣਾ ॥

jaan pakarr chalaaeaa kaal taan kharaa ddaraavanaa |

When death seizes him, and marches him away, then he looks absolutely hideous.

ਓਹ ਵੇਲਾ ਹਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਣਾ ॥੬॥

oeh velaa hath na aavai fir pachhutaavanaa |6|

That lost opportunity will not come into his hands again, and in the end, he regrets and repents. ||6||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

salok mahalaa 3 |

Salok, Third Mehl:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਮੁਹ ਫਿਰੇ ਸੇ ਬਧੇ ਦੁਖ ਸਹਾਹਿ ॥

satigur te jo muh fire se badhe dukh sahaeh |

Those who turn their faces away from the True Guru, suffer in sorrow and bondage.

ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਨੀ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਤੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

fir fir milan na paaeinee jameh tai mar jaeh |

Again and again, they are born only to die; they cannot meet their Lord.

ਸਹਸਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਈ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

sahasaa rog na chhoddee dukh hee meh dukh paeh |

The disease of doubt does not depart, and they find only pain and more pain.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਖਸਿ ਲੇਹਿ ਸਬਦੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

naanak nadaree bakhas lehi sabade mel milaeh |1|

O Nanak, if the Gracious Lord forgives, then one is united in Union with the Word of the Shabad. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮੁਹ ਫਿਰੇ ਤਿਨਾ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥

jo satigur te muh fire tinaa tthaur na tthaau |

Those who turn their faces away from the True Guru, shall find no place of rest or shelter.

ਜਿਉ ਛੁਟੜਿ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਦੁਹਚਾਰਣਿ ਬਦਨਾਉ ॥

jiau chhuttarr ghar ghar firai duhachaaran badanaau |

They wander around from door to door, like a woman forsaken, with a bad character and a bad reputation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਖਸੀਅਹਿ ਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੨॥

naanak guramukh bakhaseeeh se satigur mel milaau |2|

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are forgiven, and united in Union with the True Guru. ||2||

Pauree:

ਜੋ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਤਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਸੇ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਰਿ ਗਇਆ ॥

jo seveh sat muraar se bhavajal tar geaa |

Those who serve the True Lord, the Destroyer of ego, cross over the terrifying world-ocean.

ਜੋ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ਤਿਨ ਜਮੁ ਛਡਿ ਗਇਆ ॥

jo boleh har har naau tin jam chhadd geaa |

Those who chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, are passed over by the Messenger of Death.

ਸੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਲਇਆ ॥

se daragah paidhe jaeh jinaa har jap leaa |

Those who meditate on the Lord, go to His Court in robes of honor.

ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇਈ ਪੁਰਖ ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਮਇਆ ॥

har seveh seee purakh jinaa har tudh meaa |

They alone serve You, O Lord, whom You bless with Grace.

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭਉ ਗਇਆ ॥੭॥

gun gaavaa piaare nit guramukh bhram bhau geaa |7|

I sing continually Your Glorious Praises, O Beloved; as Gurmukh, my doubts and fears have been dispelled. ||7||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Salok, Third Mehl:

ਥਾਲੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੈ ਵਸਤੂ ਪਈਓ ਹਰਿ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

thaalai vich tai vasatoo peeo har bhojan amrit saar |

Upon the plate, three things have been placed; this is the sublime, ambrosial food of the Lord.

ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਧੈ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

jit khaadhai man tripateeai paaeeai mokh duaar |

Eating this, the mind is satisfied, and the Door of Salvation is found.

ਇਹੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਅਲਭੁ ਹੈ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਲਭੈ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

eihu bhojan alabh hai santahu labhai gur veechaar |

It is so difficult to obtain this food, O Saints; it is obtained only by contemplating the Guru.

ਏਹ ਮੁਦਾਵਣੀ ਕਿਉ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਕਢੀਐ ਸਦਾ ਰਖੀਐ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

eeh mudaavanee kiau vichahu kadteeai sadaa rakheeai ur dhaar |

Why should we cast this riddle out of our minds? We should keep it ever enshrined in our hearts.

ਏਹ ਮੁਦਾਵਣੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਲਧੀ ਭਾਲਿ ॥

eeh mudaavanee satiguroo paaee gurasikhaa ladhee bhaal |

The True Guru has posed this riddle. The Guru's Sikhs have found its solution.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੁ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਘਾਲਿ ॥੧॥

naanak jis bujhaae su bujhasee har paaeaa guramukh ghaal |1|

O Nanak, he alone understands this, whom the Lord inspires to understand. The Gurmukhs work hard, and find the Lord. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

jo dhur mele se mil rahe satigur siau chit laae |

Those whom the Primal Lord unites, remain in Union with Him; they focus their consciousness on the True Guru.

ਆਪਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇਨੁ ਸੇ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਇ ॥

aap vichhorren se vichhurre doojai bhaae khuaae |

Those whom the Lord Himself separates, remain separated; in the love of duality, they are ruined.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਣੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

naanak vin karamaa kiaa paaeeai poorab likhiaa kamaae |2|

O Nanak, without good karma, what can anyone obtain? He earns what he is pre-destined to receive. ||2||

Pauree:

ਬਹਿ ਸਖੀਆ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗਾਵਣਹਾਰੀਆ ॥

beh sakheea jas gaaveh gaavanahaareea |

Sitting together, the companions sing the Songs of the Lord's Praises.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਕਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀਆ ॥

har naam salaahihu nit har kau balihaareea |

They praise the Lord's Name continually; they are a sacrifice to the Lord.

ਜਿਨੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ਤਿਨਾ ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀਆ ॥

jinee sun maniaa har naau tinaa hau vaareea |

Those who hear, and believe in the Lord's Name, to them I am a sacrifice.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੁ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਹਾਰੀਆ ॥

guramukheea har mel milaavanahaareea |

O Lord, let me unite with the Gurmukhs, who are united with You.

ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਵਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਦੇਖਣਹਾਰੀਆ ॥੮॥

hau bal jaavaa din raat gur dekhanahaareea |8|

I am a sacrifice to those who, day and night, behold their Guru. ||8||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Salok, Third Mehl:

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭਿ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਨਿਤ ਜਗਿ ਤੋਟਾ ਸੈਸਾਰਿ ॥

vin naavai sabh bharamade nit jag tottaa saisaar |

Without the Name of the Lord, everyone wanders around the world, losing.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥

manamukh karam kamaavane haumai andh gubaar |

The self-willed manmukhs do their deeds in the pitch black darkness of egotism.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

guramukh amrit peevanaa naanak sabad veechaar |1|

The Gurmukhs drink in the Ambrosial Nectar, O Nanak, contemplating the Word of the Shabad. ||1||
