When the princess saw the king, the treasure of beauty, she held her wreath of flowers with smile.86.
ਗਹਿ ਫੂਲ ਕੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਲ ॥

ਅਤਿ ਰੂਪਵੰਤ ਸੁ ਬਾਲ ॥
at roopavant su baal |
ਤਿਸੁ ਡਾਰੀਆ ਉਰਿ ਆਨਿ ॥

ਦਸ ਚਾਰਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਨਿਧਾਨਿ ॥੮੭॥

The charming damsel caught the garland in her hand and put it around the neck of the king, expert in eighteen sciences.87.
ਤਿਹ ਦੇਬਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਕੀਨ ॥

ਦਸ ਚਾਰਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥

ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਇਮ ਬੈਨ ॥

ਸਸਿ ਕ੍ਰਾਤ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਨੈਨ ॥੮੮॥

The goddess said to that princess, who was expert in all sciences, “O beautiful maiden like moonlight having charming eyes! listen to what I say.88.
ਤਵ ਜੋਗ ਹੈ ਅਜਿ ਰਾਜ ॥

ਸੁਨ ਰੂਪਵੰਤ ਸਲਾਜ ॥
sun roopavant salaaj |
“O princess full of charm and shyness! the king Aj is worthy match for you
ਬਰੁ ਆਜੁ ਤਾ ਕਹ ਜਾਇ ॥
bar aaj taa keh jaae |
ਸੁਨਿ ਬੈਨਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਕਾਇ ॥੮੯॥
sun bain sundar kaae |89|
You see him and listen to my speech”89.

The tabor, drum, kettledrum and many other musical instruments of various tunes and tones were played

ਬਹੁ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਸੁਭ ਨੈਨ ॥੯੧॥

The flutes were played and there were many beautiful ladies of charming eyes seated there.91.
ਤਿਹ ਬਿਆਹਿ ਕੈ ਅਜਿ ਰਾਜਿ ॥

ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਲੈ ਕਰ ਦਾਜ ॥
bahu bhaat lai kar daaj |
The king Aj wedded that damsel and taking various types of dowry and
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਆਈਆ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥
grih aaeea sukh paae |
ਡਫ ਬੇਣ ਬੀਣ ਬਜਾਇ ॥੯੨॥
ddaf ben been bajaae |92|
Causing the tabor and lyre to be played, he retuned home with great happiness.92.
ਅਜਿ ਰਾਜ ਰਾਜ ਮਹਾਨ ॥

ਦਸ ਚਾਰਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥

The king expert in eighteen sciences, was the ocean of pleasure and store of gentleness
ਸੁਖ ਸਿੰਧੁ ਸੀਲ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ॥
sukh sindh seel samundr |
ਜਿਨਿ ਜੀਤਿਆ ਰਣ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ॥੯੩॥

He had conquered even Shiva in the war.93.
ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਰਾਜ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

ਸਿਰਿ ਅਤ੍ਰ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਫਿਰਾਇ ॥

In this waay, he ruled and caused the canopy to be swung over his head and in the whole world,
ਰਣ ਧੀਰ ਰਾਜ ਬਿਸੇਖ ॥

ਜਗ ਕੀਨ ਜਾਸੁ ਭਿਖੇਖ ॥੯੪॥

The ceremonies regarding he divine kingship of that victorious king were performed.94.

The king Aj, after conquering all the four directions, gave charities of materials as a generous king
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਦਾਨ ਸੀਲ ਪਹਾਰ ॥

ਦਸ ਚਾਰਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਉਦਾਰ ॥੯੫॥

Being expert in all sciences, that king was extremely benevolent.95.

ਜਿਹ ਪੇਖਿ ਖਿਝਤ ਮੈਨ ॥

His eyes and body were so charming, hat even the god of love felt jealous
ਮੁਖ ਦੇਖਿ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਸਰੂਪ ॥

ਚਿਤ ਸੋ ਚੁਰਾਵਤ ਭੂਪ ॥੯੬॥

Hundreds of kings evaded him, seeing the moonlike beauty of his face.96.
ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੈ ਬਡ ਰਾਜ ॥

ਬਹੁ ਜਗ ਧਰਮ ਸਮਾਜ ॥

In this way, the king ruled like a great sovereign in the world doing religious and social services and performing Yajnas
ਜਉ ਕਹੋ ਸਰਬ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥
jau kaho sarab bichaar |
ਇਕ ਹੋਤ ਕਥਾ ਪਸਾਰ ॥੯੭॥
eik hot kathaa pasaar |97|
If I narrate all the things associated with him, the story will be greatly increased.97.
ਤਿਹ ਤੇ ਸੁ ਥੋਰੀਐ ਬਾਤ ॥

ਸੁਨਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਭਾਖੋ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ॥

Therefore, I say in brief, O brothers! listen to it
ਬਹੁ ਜਗ ਧਰਮ ਸਮਾਜ ॥
bahu jag dharam samaaj |
ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੈ ਅਜਿ ਰਾਜ ॥੯੮॥

The king Aj ruled in this way in various ways in religions and society.98.
ਜਗ ਆਪਨੋ ਅਜਿ ਮਾਨ ॥
jag aapano aj maan |
ਤਰਿ ਆਖ ਆਨ ਨ ਆਨ ॥
tar aakh aan na aan |
He abandoned the idea of considering the whole world as his own and did not care for anyone
ਤਬ ਕਾਲ ਕੋਪ ਕ੍ਰਵਾਲ ॥
tab kaal kop kravaal |
ਅਜਿ ਜਾਰੀਆ ਮਧਿ ਜ੍ਵਾਲ ॥੯੯॥
aj jaareea madh jvaal |99|
Then the great Death, in great rage, reduced king Aj to ashes in his fire.99.
ਅਜਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਨ ॥
aj jot jot milaan |
ਤਬ ਸਰਬ ਦੇਖਿ ਡਰਾਨ ॥

Seeing the king Aj merging in the supreme Light, all the people became fearful like the passengers of a boat without the sailor
ਜਿਮ ਨਾਵ ਖੇਵਟ ਹੀਨ ॥

ਜਿਮ ਦੇਹ ਅਰਬਲ ਛੀਨ ॥੧੦੦॥

The people became weak like the individual becoming helpless with the loss of physical strength.100.
ਜਿਮ ਗਾਵ ਰਾਵ ਬਿਹੀਨ ॥

ਜਿਮ ਉਰਬਰਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ ਛੀਨ ॥

Just as a village becomes helpless without a headman, the earth becomes meaningless without fertility,
ਜਿਮ ਦਿਰਬ ਹੀਣ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥
jim dirab heen bhanddaar |
ਜਿਮ ਸਾਹਿ ਹੀਣ ਬਿਪਾਰ ॥੧੦੧॥

The treasure loses charm without wealth and the trader becomes in low spirit without the trade.101.
ਜਿਮ ਅਰਥ ਹੀਣ ਕਬਿਤ ॥

ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੇ ਜਿਮ ਮਿਤ ॥

Without the king, the people became like poetry without meaning, friend without love,
ਜਿਮ ਰਾਜ ਹੀਣ ਸੁ ਦੇਸ ॥

ਜਿਮ ਸੈਣ ਹੀਨ ਨਰੇਸ ॥੧੦੨॥

The country without the king and as the army becomes helpless without the general.102.
ਜਿਮ ਗਿਆਨ ਹੀਣ ਜੁਗੇਾਂਦ੍ਰ ॥

ਜਿਮ ਭੂਮ ਹੀਣ ਮਹੇਾਂਦ੍ਰ ॥

That state becomes like a Yogi without knowledge, a king without kingdom,
ਜਿਮ ਅਰਥ ਹੀਣ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥
jim arath heen bichaar |
ਜਿਮ ਦਰਬ ਹੀਣ ਉਦਾਰ ॥੧੦੩॥

The idea without the meaning and the donor without the material.103.
ਜਿਮ ਅੰਕੁਸ ਹੀਣ ਗਜੇਸ ॥

The people became like an elephant without a goad, the king without the army,
ਜਿਮ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਹੀਣ ਲੁਝਾਰ ॥
jim sasatr heen lujhaar |
ਜਿਮ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਾਝ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੧੦੪॥

The warrior without weapons and the ideas without wiseom.104.
ਜਿਮ ਨਾਰਿ ਹੀਣ ਭਤਾਰ ॥

They are just like the wife without husband, the woman without beloved,
ਜਿਮ ਬੁਧਿ ਹੀਣ ਕਬਿਤ ॥

ਜਿਮ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਹੀਣ ਸੁ ਮਿਤ ॥੧੦੫॥

The poetry without wisdom and the friend without love.105.
ਜਿਮ ਦੇਸ ਭੂਪ ਬਿਹੀਨ ॥

ਬਿਨੁ ਕੰਤ ਨਾਰਿ ਅਧੀਨ ॥
bin kant naar adheen |
They are just like the country becoming desolate, the women losing their husbands,
ਜਿਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਅਬਿਦਿ ॥
jih bhaat bipr abid |
ਜਿਮ ਅਰਥ ਹੀਣ ਸਬਿਦਿ ॥੧੦੬॥
jim arath heen sabid |106|
The Brahmins without learning or the men without wealth.106.
ਤੇ ਕਹੇ ਸਰਬ ਨਰੇਸ ॥
te kahe sarab nares |
ਜੇ ਆ ਗਏ ਇਹ ਦੇਸਿ ॥
je aa ge ih des |
In this way, the kings, who ruled over this country, how can they be described?
ਕਰਿ ਅਸਟ ਦਸ੍ਰਯ ਪੁਰਾਨਿ ॥

O man, grasp this Truth firmly in your soul.
ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ਹੈ ਜੈਸੇ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਲਗਤ ਨ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sagal jagat hai jaise supanaa binasat lagat na baar |1| rahaau |
The whole world is just like a dream; it will pass away in an instant. ||1||Pause||
ਬਾਰੂ ਭੀਤਿ ਬਨਾਈ ਰਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਰਹਤ ਨਹੀ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
baaroo bheet banaaee rach pach rehat nahee din chaar |
Like a wall of sand, built up and plastered with great care, which does not last even a few days,
ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਉਰਝਿਓ ਕਹਾ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੧॥
taise hee ih sukh maaeaa ke urajhio kahaa gavaar |1|
just so are the pleasures of Maya. Why are you entangled in them, you ignorant fool? ||1||
ਅਜਹੂ ਸਮਝਿ ਕਛੁ ਬਿਗਰਿਓ ਨਾਹਿਨਿ ਭਜਿ ਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥
ajahoo samajh kachh bigario naahin bhaj le naam muraar |
Understand this today - it is not yet too late! Chant and vibrate the Name of the Lord.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਜ ਮਤੁ ਸਾਧਨ ਕਉ ਭਾਖਿਓ ਤੋਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ॥੨॥੮॥
kahu naanak nij mat saadhan kau bhaakhio tohi pukaar |2|8|
Says Nanak, this is the subtle wisdom of the Holy Saints, which I proclaim out loud to you. ||2||8||

ਇਹ ਜਗਿ ਮੀਤੁ ਨ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਕੋਈ ॥

In this world, I have not found any true friend.
ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ਅਪਨੈ ਸੁਖਿ ਲਾਗਿਓ ਦੁਖ ਮੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sagal jagat apanai sukh laagio dukh mai sang na hoee |1| rahaau |
The whole world is attached to its own pleasures, and when trouble comes, no one is with you. ||1||Pause||
ਦਾਰਾ ਮੀਤ ਪੂਤ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ ਸਗਰੇ ਧਨ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
daaraa meet poot sanabandhee sagare dhan siau laage |
Wives, friends, children and relatives - all are attached to wealth.
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਨਰ ਕਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਭ ਭਾਗੇ ॥੧॥
jab hee niradhan dekhio nar kau sang chhaadd sabh bhaage |1|
When they see a poor man, they all forsake his company and run away. ||1||
ਕਹਂਉ ਕਹਾ ਯਿਆ ਮਨ ਬਉਰੇ ਕਉ ਇਨ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾਇਓ ॥
kahnau kahaa yiaa man baure kau in siau nehu lagaaeo |
So what should I say to this crazy mind, which is affectionately attached to them?
ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਸਕਲ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਜਸੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਬਿਸਰਾਇਓ ॥੨॥
deenaa naath sakal bhai bhanjan jas taa ko bisaraaeo |2|
The Lord is the Master of the meek, the Destroyer of all fears, and I have forgotten to praise Him. ||2||
ਸੁਆਨ ਪੂਛ ਜਿਉ ਭਇਓ ਨ ਸੂਧਉ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਜਤਨੁ ਮੈ ਕੀਨਉ ॥
suaan poochh jiau bheo na soodhau bahut jatan mai keenau |
Like a dog's tail, which will never straighten out, the mind will not change, no matter how many things are tried.
ਨਾਨਕ ਲਾਜ ਬਿਰਦ ਕੀ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਹਾਰਉ ਲੀਨਉ ॥੩॥੯॥
naanak laaj birad kee raakhahu naam tuhaarau leenau |3|9|
Says Nanak, please, Lord, uphold the honor of Your innate nature; I chant Your Name. ||3||9||

O mind, you have not accepted the Guru's Teachings.
ਕਹਾ ਭਇਓ ਜਉ ਮੂਡੁ ਮੁਡਾਇਓ ਭਗਵਉ ਕੀਨੋ ਭੇਸੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kahaa bheo jau moodd muddaaeo bhagvau keeno bhes |1| rahaau |
What is the use of shaving your head, and wearing saffron robes? ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਚ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਝੂਠਹ ਲਾਗਿਓ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਓ ॥
saach chhaadd kai jhootthah laagio janam akaarath khoeo |
Abandoning Truth, you cling to falsehood; your life is uselessly wasting away.
ਕਰਿ ਪਰਪੰਚ ਉਦਰ ਨਿਜ ਪੋਖਿਓ ਪਸੁ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਸੋਇਓ ॥੧॥
kar parapanch udar nij pokhio pas kee niaaee soeo |1|
Practicing hypocrisy, you fill your belly, and then sleep like an animal. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਭਜਨ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਾਥਿ ਬਿਕਾਨਾ ॥
raam bhajan kee gat nahee jaanee maaeaa haath bikaanaa |
You do not know the Way of the Lord's meditation; you have sold yourself into Maya's hands.
ਉਰਝਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਿਖਿਅਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਉਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਬਿਸਰਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
aurajh rahio bikhian sang bauraa naam ratan bisaraanaa |2|
The madman remains entangled in vice and corruption; he has forgotten the jewel of the Naam. ||2||
ਰਹਿਓ ਅਚੇਤੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਅਉਧ ਸਿਰਾਨੀ ॥
rahio achet na chetio gobind birathaa aaudh siraanee |
He remains thoughtless, not thinking of the Lord of the Universe; his life is uselessly passing away.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਪਛਾਨਉ ਭੂਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥੩॥੧੦॥
kahu naanak har birad pachhaanau bhoole sadaa paraanee |3|10|
Says Nanak, O Lord, please, confirm your innate nature; this mortal is continually making mistakes. ||3||10||

ਜੋ ਨਰੁ ਦੁਖ ਮੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ॥

That man, who in the midst of pain, does not feel pain,
ਸੁਖ ਸਨੇਹੁ ਅਰੁ ਭੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕੰਚਨ ਮਾਟੀ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sukh sanehu ar bhai nahee jaa kai kanchan maattee maanai |1| rahaau |
who is not affected by pleasure, affection or fear, and who looks alike upon gold and dust;||1||Pause||
ਨਹ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਨਹ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥
neh nindiaa neh usatat jaa kai lobh mohu abhimaanaa |
Who is not swayed by either slander or praise, nor affected by greed, attachment or pride;
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਆਰਉ ਨਾਹਿ ਮਾਨ ਅਪਮਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
harakh sog te rahai niaarau naeh maan apamaanaa |1|
who remains unaffected by joy and sorrow, honor and dishonor;||1||
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਜਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ॥
aasaa manasaa sagal tiaagai jag te rahai niraasaa |
who renounces all hopes and desires and remains desireless in the world;
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਜਿਹ ਪਰਸੈ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਤਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥੨॥
kaam krodh jih parasai naahan tih ghatt braham nivaasaa |2|
who is not touched by sexual desire or anger - within his heart, God dwells. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਹ ਨਰ ਕਉ ਕੀਨੀ ਤਿਹ ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਪਛਾਨੀ ॥
gur kirapaa jih nar kau keenee tih ih jugat pachhaanee |
That man, blessed by Guru's Grace, understands this way.
ਨਾਨਕ ਲੀਨ ਭਇਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਪਾਨੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਨੀ ॥੩॥੧੧॥
naanak leen bheo gobind siau jiau paanee sang paanee |3|11|
O Nanak, he merges with the Lord of the Universe, like water with water. ||3||11||
