ਜਬ ਆਇਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋ ਭਯੋ ਜਨਮੁ ਧਰਾ ਜਗ ਆਇ ॥
jab aaeis prabh ko bhayo janam dharaa jag aae |
When the Lord Willed, I was born on this earth.
ਅਬ ਮੈ ਕਥਾ ਸੰਛੇਪ ਤੇ ਸਭਹੂੰ ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥੬੪॥
ab mai kathaa sanchhep te sabhahoon kehat sunaae |64|

My father proceeded towards the east and visited several places of pilgrimage.
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਜਾਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਬੇਣੀ ਭਏ ॥
jab hee jaat tribenee bhe |
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਦਿਨ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਤਏ ॥੧॥
pun daan din karat bite |1|
When he went to Triveni (Prayag), he passed his days in act of charity.1.
ਤਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਭਯੋ ॥

ਪਟਨਾ ਸਹਰ ਬਿਖੈ ਭਵ ਲਯੋ ॥
pattanaa sehar bikhai bhav layo |
I was conceived there and took birth at Patna.
ਮੱਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਸ ਹਮ ਕੋ ਲੇ ਆਏ ॥

ਭਾਂਤਿ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਦਾਈਅਨਿ ਦੁਲਰਾਏ ॥੨॥

Whence I was brought to Madra Desh (Punjab), where I was caressed by various nurses.2

ਦੀਨੀ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਕੀ ਸਿੱਛਾ ॥

I was given physical protection in various ways and given various types of education.
ਜਬ ਹਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਮੋ ਆਏ ॥

ਜਥਾ ਸਕਤ ਤਬ ਧਰਮ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥
jathaa sakat tab dharam chalaayo |
When I obtained the position of responsibility, I performed the religious acts to the best of my ability.
ਭਾਂਤਿ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਨ ਖੇਲ ਸਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
bhaant bhaant ban khel sikaaraa |
ਮਾਰੇ ਰੀਛ ਰੋਝ ਝੰਖਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
maare reechh rojh jhankhaaraa |1|
I went hunting various kinds of animals in the forest and killed bears, nilgais (blue bulls) and elks.1.
ਦੇਸ ਚਾਲ ਹਮ ਤੇ ਪੁਨਿ ਭਈ ॥

ਸਹਰ ਪਾਂਵਟਾ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ ਲਈ ॥

Then I left my home and went to place named Paonta.
ਕਾਲਿੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਤਟਿ ਕਰੇ ਬਿਲਾਸਾ ॥
kaalindree tatt kare bilaasaa |
ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤ ਕੇ ਪੇਖ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥੨॥

I enjoyed my stay on the banks of Kalindri (Yamuna) and saw amusement of various kind2.
ਤਹ ਕੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਘਨੇ ਚੁਨਿ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
teh ke singh ghane chun maare |
ਰੋਝ ਰੀਛ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥
rojh reechh bahu bhaant bidaare |
There I killed may lions, nilgais and bears.
ਫਤੇਸਾਹ ਕੋਪਾ ਤਬਿ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
fatesaah kopaa tab raajaa |
ਲੋਹ ਪਰਾ ਹਮ ਸੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਾਜਾ ॥੩॥
loh paraa ham so bin kaajaa |3|
On this the king Fateh Shah become angry and fought with me without any reason.3.

ਪੰਚੋ ਬੀਰ ਬੰਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਿਥੀ ਪਾਇ ਰੋਪੇ ॥
pancho beer banke prithee paae rope |
There Sri Shah (Sango Shah) become enraged and all the five warriors stood firmly in the battlefield.
ਹਠੀ ਜੀਤਮੱਲੰ ਸੁ ਗਾਜੀ ਗੁਲਾਬੰ ॥
hatthee jeetamalan su gaajee gulaaban |
ਰਣੰ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਰੰਗ ਰੂਪੰ ਸਹਾਬੰ ॥੪॥
ranan dekheeai rang roopan sahaaban |4|
Including the tenacious Jit Mal and the desparate hero Gulab, whose faces were red with ire, in the field.4.
ਹਠਿਯੋ ਮਾਹਰੀਚੰਦਯੰ ਗੰਗਰਾਮੰ ॥
hatthiyo maahareechandayan gangaraaman |
ਜਿਨੈ ਕਿਤਯੰ ਜਿਤੀਯੰ ਫੌਜ ਤਾਮੰ ॥
jinai kitayan jiteeyan fauaj taaman |
The persistent Mahari Chand and Ganga Ram, who had defeated lot of forces.
ਕੁਪੇ ਲਾਲਚੰਦੰ ਕੀਏ ਲਾਲ ਰੂਪੰ ॥
kupe laalachandan kee laal roopan |
ਜਿਨੈ ਗੱਜੀਯੰ ਗਰਬ ਸਿੰਘੰ ਅਨੂਪੰ ॥੫॥
jinai gajeeyan garab singhan anoopan |5|
Lal Chand was red with anger, who had shattered pride of several lion-like heroes.5.
ਕੁਪਿਯੋ ਮਾਹਰੂ ਕਾਹਰੂ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
kupiyo maaharoo kaaharoo roop dhaare |
ਜਿਨੈ ਖਾਨ ਖਾਵੀਨਿਯੰ ਖੇਤ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
jinai khaan khaaveeniyan khet maare |
Maharu got enraged and with frightening expression killed brave Khans in the battlefield.
ਕੁਪਿਓ ਦੇਵਤੇਸੰ ਦਯਾਰਾਮ ਜੁੱਧੰ ॥
kupio devatesan dayaaraam judhan |
ਕੀਯੋ ਦ੍ਰੋਣ ਕੀ ਜਿਉ ਮਹਾ ਜੁੱਧ ਸੁੱਧੰ ॥੬॥
keeyo dron kee jiau mahaa judh sudhan |6|
The godly Daya Ram, filled with great ire, fought very heroically in the field like Dronacharya.6.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕੋਪਿਯੰ ਕੁਤਕੋ ਸੰਭਾਰੀ ॥
kripaal kopiyan kutako sanbhaaree |
ਹਠੀ ਖਾਨਹੱਯਾਤ ਕੇ ਸੀਸ ਝਾਰੀ ॥
hatthee khaanahayaat ke sees jhaaree |
Kirpal in rage, rushed with his mace and struck it on the head of the tenacious Hayaat Khan.
ਉੱਠੀ ਛਿੱਛ ਇੱਛੰ ਕਢਾ ਮੇਝ ਜੋਰੰ ॥
autthee chhichh ichhan kadtaa mejh joran |
ਮਨੋ ਮਾਖਨੰ ਮੱਟਕੀ ਕਾਨ੍ਹ ਫੋਰੰ ॥੭॥
mano maakhanan mattakee kaanh foran |7|
With all his might, he caused the marrow flow out of his head, which splashed like the butter spattering out of the pitcher of butter broken by lord Krishan.7.
ਤਹਾ ਨੰਦਚੰਦੰ ਕੀਯੋ ਕੋਪੁ ਭਾਰੋ ॥
tahaa nandachandan keeyo kop bhaaro |
ਲਗਾਈ ਬਰੱਛੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਣੰ ਸੰਭਾਰੋ ॥
lagaaee barachhee kripaanan sanbhaaro |
Then Namd Chand, in fierce rage, wielding his sword struck it with force.
ਤੁਟੀ ਤੇਗ ਤ੍ਰਿੱਖੀ ਕਢੇ ਜਮਦੱਢੰ ॥
tuttee teg trakhee kadte jamadadtan |
ਹਠੀ ਰਾਖਯੰ ਲੱਜ ਬੰਸੰ ਸੱਨਢੰ ॥੮॥
hatthee raakhayan laj bansan sanadtan |8|
But it broke. Then he drew his dagger and the tenacious warrior saved the honour of the Sodhi clan.8.
ਤਹਾਂ ਮਾਤਲੇਯੰ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੰ ਕ੍ਰੁੱਧੰ ॥
tahaan maataleyan kripaalan krudhan |
ਛਕਿਓ ਛੋਭ ਛੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਰਯੋ ਜੁੱਧ ਸੁੱਧੰ ॥
chhakio chhobh chhatree karayo judh sudhan |
Then the Maternal uncle Kirpal, in great ire, manifested the war-feats like a true Kshatriya.
ਸਹੇ ਦੇਹ ਆਪੰ ਮਹਾਂ ਬੀਰ ਬਾਣੰ ॥
sahe deh aapan mahaan beer baanan |
ਕਰੋ ਖਾਨ ਬਾਨੀਨ ਖਾਲੀ ਪਲਾਣੰ ॥੯॥
karo khaan baaneen khaalee palaanan |9|
The great hero was struck by an arrow, but he caused the brave Khan to fall from the saddle.9.
ਹਠਿਯੋ ਸਾਹਬੰਚੰਦ ਖੇਤੰ ਖਤ੍ਰਿਯਾਣੰ ॥
hatthiyo saahabanchand khetan khatriyaanan |
ਹਨੇ ਖਾਨ ਖੂਨੀ ਖੁਰਾਸਾਨ ਭਾਨੰ ॥
hane khaan khoonee khuraasaan bhaanan |
Sahib Chand, the valiant Kshatriya, killed a bloody Khan of Khorasan.
ਤਹਾਂ ਬੀਰ ਬੰਕੇ ਭਲੀ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
tahaan beer banke bhalee bhaant maare |
ਬਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ॥੧੦॥
bache praan lai ke sipaahee sidhaare |10|
He slew several graceful warriors, with full force the soldiers who survived, fled away in order to save their lives.10.
ਤਹਾਂ ਸਾਹ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਕੀਨੇ ਅਖਾਰੇ ॥
tahaan saah sangraam keene akhaare |
ਘਨੇ ਖੇਤ ਮੋ ਖਾਨ ਖੂਨੀ ਲਤਾਰੇ ॥
ghane khet mo khaan khoonee lataare |
There (Sango) Shah exhibited his acts of bravery in the battlefield and trampled under feet many bloody Khans.
ਨ੍ਰਿਪੰ ਗੋਪਲਾਯੰ ਖਰੋ ਖੇਤ ਗਾਜੈ ॥
nripan gopalaayan kharo khet gaajai |
ਮ੍ਰਿਗਾ ਝੁੰਡ ਮੱਧਿਯੰ ਮਨੋ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਾਜੈ ॥੧੧॥
mrigaa jhundd madhiyan mano singh raajai |11|
Gopal, the king of Guleria, stood firmly in the field and roared like a lion amidst a herd of deers.11.
ਤਹਾਂ ਏਕ ਬੀਰੰ ਹਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਕੋਪ︀ਯੋ ॥
tahaan ek beeran haree chand kopayo |
ਭਲੀ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਸੋ ਖੇਤ ਮੋ ਪਾਵ ਰੋਪ︀ਯੋ ॥
bhalee bhaant so khet mo paav ropayo |
There in great fury, a warrior Hari Chand, very skillfully took position in the battlefield.
ਮਹਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕੈ ਤੀਰ ਤੀਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇ ॥
mahaa krodh kai teer teekhe prahaare |
ਲਗੈ ਜੌਨ ਕੇ ਤਾਹਿ ਪਾਰੈ ਪਧਾਰੇ ॥੧੨॥
lagai jauan ke taeh paarai padhaare |12|
He discharged sharp arrows in great rage and whosoever was struck, left for the other world.12.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੁਲੈ ਭੁਲਾਈਐ ਭੂਲੀ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਇ ॥
manamukh bhulai bhulaaeeai bhoolee tthaur na kaae |
The self-willed manmukhs wander around, deluded and deceived. They find no place of rest.
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਦਿਖਾਵਈ ਅੰਧੀ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur bin ko na dikhaavee andhee aavai jaae |
Without the Guru, no one is shown the Way. Like the blind, they continue coming and going.
ਗਿਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਠਗਿਆ ਮੁਠਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
giaan padaarath khoeaa tthagiaa mutthaa jaae |1|
Having lost the treasure of spiritual wisdom, they depart, defrauded and plundered. ||1||
ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥
baabaa maaeaa bharam bhulaae |
O Baba, Maya deceives with its illusion.
ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੀ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਨਾ ਪਿਰ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bharam bhulee ddohaaganee naa pir ank samaae |1| rahaau |
Deceived by doubt, the discarded bride is not received into the Lap of her Beloved. ||1||Pause||
ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਦਿਸੰਤਰੀ ਭੂਲੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
bhoolee firai disantaree bhoolee grihu taj jaae |
The deceived bride wanders around in foreign lands; she leaves, and abandons her own home.
ਭੂਲੀ ਡੂੰਗਰਿ ਥਲਿ ਚੜੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
bhoolee ddoongar thal charrai bharamai man ddolaae |
Deceived, she climbs the plateaus and mountains; her mind wavers in doubt.
ਧੁਰਹੁ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੀ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਰਬਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
dhurahu vichhunee kiau milai garab mutthee bilalaae |2|
Separated from the Primal Being, how can she meet with Him again? Plundered by pride, she cries out and bewails. ||2||
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
vichhurriaa gur melasee har ras naam piaar |
The Guru unites the separated ones with the Lord again, through the love of the Delicious Name of the Lord.
ਸਾਚਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਘਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਿ ॥
saach sehaj sobhaa ghanee har gun naam adhaar |
Through truth and intuitive poise, great honor is obtained, with the Support of the Naam and the Glory of the Lord.
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਖੁ ਤੂੰ ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
jiau bhaavai tiau rakh toon mai tujh bin kavan bhataar |3|
As it pleases You, Lord, please save and protect me. Without You, O my Husband Lord, who else is there for me? ||3||
ਅਖਰ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭੁਲੀਐ ਭੇਖੀ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
akhar parr parr bhuleeai bhekhee bahut abhimaan |
Reading their books over and over again, people continue making mistakes; they are so proud of their religious robes.
ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
teerath naataa kiaa kare man meh mail gumaan |
But what is the use of bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, when the filth of stubborn pride is within the mind?
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ॥੪॥
gur bin kin samajhaaeeai man raajaa sulataan |4|
Other than the Guru, who can explain that within the mind is the Lord, the King, the Emperor? ||4||
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
prem padaarath paaeeai guramukh tat veechaar |
The Treasure of the Lord's Love is obtained by the Gurmukh, who contemplates the essence of reality.
ਸਾ ਧਨ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
saa dhan aap gavaaeaa gur kai sabad seegaar |
The bride eradicates her selfishness, and adorns herself with the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਘਰ ਹੀ ਸੋ ਪਿਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
ghar hee so pir paaeaa gur kai het apaar |5|
Within her own home, she finds her Husband, through infinite love for the Guru. ||5||
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur kee sevaa chaakaree man niramal sukh hoe |
Applying oneself to the service of the Guru, the mind is purified, and peace is obtained.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਖੋਇ ॥
gur kaa sabad man vasiaa haumai vichahu khoe |
The Word of the Guru's Shabad abides within the mind, and egotism is eliminated from within.
ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
naam padaarath paaeaa laabh sadaa man hoe |6|
The Treasure of the Naam is acquired, and the mind reaps the lasting profit. ||6||
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਲਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
karam milai taa paaeeai aap na leaa jaae |
If He grants His Grace, then we obtain it. We cannot find it by our own efforts.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਗਿ ਰਹੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
gur kee charanee lag rahu vichahu aap gavaae |
Remain attached to the Feet of the Guru, and eradicate selfishness from within.
ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਸਚੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੭॥
sache setee ratiaa sacho palai paae |7|
Attuned to Truth, you shall obtain the True One. ||7||
ਭੁਲਣ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
bhulan andar sabh ko abhul guroo karataar |
Everyone makes mistakes; only the Guru and the Creator are infallible.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਲਾਗਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
guramat man samajhaaeaa laagaa tisai piaar |
One who instructs his mind with the Guru's Teachings comes to embrace love for the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੧੨॥
naanak saach na veesarai mele sabad apaar |8|12|
O Nanak, do not forget the Truth; you shall receive the Infinite Word of the Shabad. ||8||12||
