ਤਬ ਜਦੁਪਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਰੂਪ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥

ਇਕ ਦਿਜ ਕੈ ਇਕ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੇ ਆਯੋ ॥
eik dij kai ik nrip ke aayo |
Then Krishna manifested himself in tow forms, in one form he went to the king and in the other he went to the Brahmin
ਦਿਜ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਅਤਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਤਿਹ ਕਰੀ ॥
dij nrip at sevaa tih karee |
ਚਿਤ ਕੀ ਸਭ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਪਰਹਰੀ ॥੨੪੪੫॥
chit kee sabh chintaa paraharee |2445|
Both the king and the Brahmin performed extreme service and relinquished all the afflictions of their mind.2445.

ਚਾਰ ਮਾਸ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਤਹਾ ਰਹੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥
chaar maas har joo tahaa rahe bahut sukh paae |
ਬਹੁਰੁ ਆਪੁਨੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਗਏ ਜਸ ਕੀ ਬੰਬ ਬਜਾਇ ॥੨੪੪੬॥
bahur aapune grih ge jas kee banb bajaae |2446|
Krishna stayed there for four months happily and then he went back to his home causing the resounding of his trumpets.2446.
ਇਕ ਕਹਿ ਗੇ ਦਿਜ ਭੂਪ ਕਉ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਪਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਇਸ ਨੇਹੁ ॥

ਬੇਦ ਚਾਰਿ ਜਿਉ ਮੁਹਿ ਜਪੈ ਤਿਉ ਮੁਹਿ ਜਪੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੇਹੁ ॥੨੪੪੭॥
bed chaar jiau muhi japai tiau muhi jap sun lehu |2447|
Krishna said to the king and the Brahmin with love, “The way in which all the four Vedas repeat my name, you may also repeat and listen to my Name.”2447.

ਕਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਗਾਵਤ ਹੈ ਗੁਨ ਬੇਦ ਸੁਨੋ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਸੁਕ ਇਉ ਜੀਯ ਆਈ ॥
kaa bidh gaavat hai gun bed suno tum te suk iau jeey aaee |
ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਭੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਮ ਕੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਜਸਤਾਈ ॥
tiaag sabhai fun dhaam ke laalach sayaam bhanai prabh kee jasataaee |
“O king! listen, how the Vedas eulogise Him and sing the praises of the Lord causing the relinquishment of all the domestic temptations
ਇਉ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਬੇਦ ਸੁਨੋ ਤੁਮ ਰੰਗ ਨ ਰੂਪ ਲਖਿਯੋ ਕਛੂ ਜਾਈ ॥
eiau gun gaavat bed suno tum rang na roop lakhiyo kachhoo jaaee |
The Vedas says that the form and colour of that Lord are invisible. O king! I have never given you such an instruction
ਇਉ ਸੁਕ ਬੈਨ ਕਹੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸਾਚ ਰਿਦੇ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਠਹਰਾਈ ॥੨੪੪੮॥
eiau suk bain kahai nrip so nrip saach ride apune tthaharaaee |2448|
Therefore abide this instruction in your mind.”2248.
ਰੰਗ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਅਭੇਖ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਹੈ ਜੁ ਬਤਇਯੈ ॥
rang na rekh abhekh sadaa prabh ant na aavat hai ju bateiyai |
That Lord has no form, no colour, no garb and no end
ਚਉਦਹੂ ਲੋਕਨ ਮੈ ਜਿਹ ਕੋ ਦਿਨਿ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਜਸੁ ਕੇਵਲ ਗਇਯੈ ॥
chaudahoo lokan mai jih ko din rain sadaa jas keval geiyai |
His praises are sung in all the fourteen worlds day and night
ਗਿਆਨ ਬਿਖੈ ਅਰੁ ਧਿਆਨ ਬਿਖੈ ਇਸਨਾਨ ਬਿਖੈ ਰਸ ਮੈ ਚਿਤ ਕਇਯੈ ॥
giaan bikhai ar dhiaan bikhai isanaan bikhai ras mai chit keiyai |
His love should be kept in mind in meditation, spiritual pursuits and in the bath
ਬੇਦ ਜਪੈ ਜਿਹ ਕੋ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਪ ਸਦਾ ਕਰੀਯੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਯੌ ਸੁਨਿ ਲਇਯੈ ॥੨੪੪੯॥
bed japai jih ko tih jaap sadaa kareeyai nrip yau sun leiyai |2449|
O king! He, whom the Vedas remember, He should always be remembered.”2449.
ਜਾਹਿ ਕੀ ਦੇਹ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਜੂ ਕੇ ਰਸ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਭੀਨੀ ॥
jaeh kee deh sadaa gun gaavat sayaam joo ke ras ke sang bheenee |
ਤਾਹਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਹਮਰੇ ਸੰਗ ਬਾਤ ਕਹੀ ਤਿਹ ਤੇ ਹਮ ਹੂ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੀਨੀ ॥
taeh pitaa hamare sang baat kahee tih te ham hoo sun leenee |
The Lord, whose praises are sung with love by all, my father (Vyas) also used to sing His praises which I have heard
ਜਾਪ ਜਪੈ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਸੁ ਜਪੈ ਨਹਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਹ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੀਨੀ ॥
jaap japai sabh hee har ko su japai neh hai jih kee mat heenee |
ਤਾਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਰੁਚਿ ਸੋ ਜਪੀਐ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਸੁਕਦੇਵ ਇਹੈ ਮਤਿ ਦੀਨੀ ॥੨੪੫੦॥
taeh sadaa ruch so japeeai nrip ko sukadev ihai mat deenee |2450|
Those who are of very low intellect, they only do not remember Him, “in this way Shukdev addressed the king, “O king! that Lord should always be remembered with love.”2450.
ਕਸਟ ਕੀਏ ਜੋ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਸੀਸ ਜਟਾ ਧਰੇ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
kasatt kee jo na aavat hai kar sees jattaa dhare haath na aavai |
He, who is not realized on enduring many sufferings and wearing mattered locks
ਬਿਦਿਆ ਪੜੇ ਨ ਕੜੇ ਤਪ ਸੋ ਅਰੁ ਜੋ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਮੂੰਦ ਕੋਊ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
bidiaa parre na karre tap so ar jo drig moond koaoo gun gaavai |
Who is not realised by getting education, by performing austerities and closing the eyes
ਬੀਨ ਬਜਾਇ ਸੁ ਨ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਿਖਾਇ ਬਤਾਇ ਭਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਲੋਕ ਰਿਝਾਵੈ ॥
been bajaae su nrit dikhaae bataae bhale har lok rijhaavai |
And who cannot be pleased by playing upon several types of musical instruments and by dancing
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਰ ਮੋ ਨਹੀ ਆਵਤ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਹੂ ਸੋ ਜਿਹ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨੪੫੧॥
prem binaa kar mo nahee aavat braham hoo so jih bhed na paavai |2451|
That Brahman cannot be realized by anyone without love.2451.
ਖੋਜ ਰਹੇ ਰਵਿ ਸੇ ਸਸਿ ਸੇ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਆਯੋ ॥
khoj rahe rav se sas se tih ko tih ko kachh ant na aayo |
He is being searched by Surya and Chandra, but they could not know his mystery
ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਪਾਰ ਨ ਪਇਯਤ ਜਾਹਿ ਕੇ ਬੇਦ ਸਕੈ ਨਹਿ ਭੇਦ ਬਤਾਯੋ ॥
rudr ke paar na peiyat jaeh ke bed sakai neh bhed bataayo |
Even the ascetic like Rudra (Shiva) and also Vedas could not know His mystery
ਨਾਰਦ ਤੂੰਬਰ ਲੈ ਕਰਿ ਬੀਨ ਭਲੇ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਯੋ ॥
naarad toonbar lai kar been bhale bidh so har ko gun gaayo |
Narada also sings His praises on his Vina (lyre), but according to the poet Shyam
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੀਏ ਬ੍ਰਿਜ ਨਾਇਕ ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਿਜ ਨਾਇਕ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੨੪੫੨॥
sayaam bhanai bin prem kee brij naaeik so brij naaeik paayo |2452|
Without love none could realise Krishna as Lord-God.2452.

ਜਬ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੋ ਸੁਕ ਯੌ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਤਬ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੁਕ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ॥
jab nrip so suk yau kahiyo tab nrip suk ke saath |
When Shukdev said this to the king, the king asked Shukdev, “How this can happen that in his birth the Lord may remain in agony and
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਦੁਖੀ ਸੁਖੀ ਸੁ ਸਿਵ ਰਹੈ ਸੁ ਕਹੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਗਾਥ ॥੨੪੫੩॥
har jan dukhee sukhee su siv rahai su kahu muhi gaath |2453|
Shiva himself may remain in comfort, kindly enlighten me on this episode.”2453.

ਇਹੈ ਜੁਧਿਸਟਰ ਕੈ ਜੀਅ ਆਯੋ ॥
eihai judhisattar kai jeea aayo |
ਹਰਿ ਪੂਛਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਭੇਦ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥੨੪੫੪॥
har poochhio har bhed sunaayo |2454|
Then the king said this to Shukdev, then Shukdev while replying said this, “The same thing also occurred in the mind of Yudhishtar and he had asked Krishna the same thing and Krishna had also explained this mystery to Yudhishtar.”2254.

sun bhoopat yaa jagat mai dukhee rehat har sant |
ਅੰਤਿ ਲਹਤ ਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਤ ਹੈ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੨੪੫੫॥
ant lehat hai mukat fal paavat hai bhagavant |2455|
“O king! listen, the saints of God live in agony in this world, but ultimately they attain salvation and realise the Lord.2455.
ਬਿਹਾਗੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਛੰਤ ॥

ਅਨ ਕਾਏ ਰਾਤੜਿਆ ਵਾਟ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
an kaae raatarriaa vaatt duhelee raam |
Why are you imbued with the love of another? That path is very dangerous.
ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਦਿਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਬੇਲੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
paap kamaavadiaa teraa koe na belee raam |
O sinner, no one is your friend.
ਕੋਏ ਨ ਬੇਲੀ ਹੋਇ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੇ ॥
koe na belee hoe teraa sadaa pachhotaavahe |
No one shall be your friend, and you shall forever regret your actions.
ਗੁਨ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਨ ਜਪਹਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਦਹੁ ਸੇ ਦਿਹ ਆਵਹੇ ॥
gun gupaal na japeh rasanaa fir kadahu se dih aavahe |
You have not chanted with your tongue the Praises of the Sustainer of the World; when will these days come again?
ਤਰਵਰ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੇ ਨਹ ਪਾਤ ਜੁੜਤੇ ਜਮ ਮਗਿ ਗਉਨੁ ਇਕੇਲੀ ॥
taravar vichhune neh paat jurrate jam mag gaun ikelee |
The leaf, separated from the branch, shall not be joined with it again; all alone, it falls on its way to death.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਫਿਰਤ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ॥੧॥
binavant naanak bin naam har ke sadaa firat duhelee |1|
Prays Nanak, without the Lord's Name, the soul wanders, forever suffering. ||1||
ਤੂੰ ਵਲਵੰਚ ਲੂਕਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਭ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
toon valavanch look kareh sabh jaanai jaanee raam |
You are practicing deception secretly, but the Lord, the Knower, knows all.
ਲੇਖਾ ਧਰਮ ਭਇਆ ਤਿਲ ਪੀੜੇ ਘਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
lekhaa dharam bheaa til peerre ghaanee raam |
When the Righteous Judge of Dharma reads your account, you shall be squeezed like a sesame seed in the oil-press.
ਕਿਰਤ ਕਮਾਣੇ ਦੁਖ ਸਹੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਇਆ ॥
kirat kamaane dukh sahu paraanee anik jon bhramaaeaa |
For the actions you committed, you shall suffer the penalty; you shall be consigned to countless reincarnations.
ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
mahaa mohanee sang raataa ratan janam gavaaeaa |
Imbued with the love of Maya, the great enticer, you shall lose the jewel of this human life.
ਇਕਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਆਨ ਕਾਜ ਸਿਆਣੀ ॥
eikas har ke naam baajhahu aan kaaj siaanee |
Except for the One Name of the Lord, you are clever in everything else.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਭਰਮਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਲੁਭਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
binavant naanak lekh likhiaa bharam mohi lubhaanee |2|
Prays Nanak, those who have such pre-ordained destiny are attracted to doubt and emotional attachment. ||2||
ਬੀਚੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਕਰੇ ਅਕ੍ਰਿਤਘਣੁ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਪਇਆ ॥
beech na koe kare akritaghan vichhurr peaa |
No one advocates for the ungrateful person, who is separated from the Lord.
ਆਏ ਖਰੇ ਕਠਿਨ ਜਮਕੰਕਰਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਲਇਆ ॥
aae khare katthin jamakankar pakarr leaa |
The hard-hearted Messenger of Death comes and seizes him.
ਪਕੜੇ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਅਪਣਾ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਰਾਤਿਆ ॥
pakarre chalaaeaa apanaa kamaaeaa mahaa mohanee raatiaa |
He seizes him, and leads him away, to pay for his evil deeds; he was imbued with Maya, the great enticer.
ਗੁਨ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨ ਜਪਿਆ ਤਪਤ ਥੰਮੑ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਤਿਆ ॥
gun govind guramukh na japiaa tapat thama gal laatiaa |
He was not Gurmukh - he did not chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe; and now, the hot irons are put to his chest.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਮੂਠਾ ਖੋਇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਛੁਤਾਪਿਆ ॥
kaam krodh ahankaar mootthaa khoe giaan pachhutaapiaa |
He is ruined by sexual desire, anger and egotism; deprived of spiritual wisdom, he comes to regret.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪੁ ਰਸਨ ਨ ਜਾਪਿਆ ॥੩॥
binavant naanak sanjog bhoolaa har jaap rasan na jaapiaa |3|
Prays Nanak, by his cursed destiny he has gone astray; with his tongue, he does not chant the Name of the Lord. ||3||
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
tujh bin ko naahee prabh raakhanahaaraa raam |
Without You, God, no one is our savior.
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
patit udhaaran har birad tumaaraa raam |
It is Your Nature, Lord, to save the sinners.
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਸਰਨਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
patit udhaaran saran suaamee kripaa nidh deaalaa |
O Savior of sinners, I have entered Your Sanctuary, O Lord and Master, Compassionate Ocean of Mercy.
ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਤੇ ਉਧਰੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਸਗਲ ਘਟ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥
andh koop te udhar karate sagal ghatt pratipaalaa |
Please, rescue me from the deep, dark pit, O Creator, Cherisher of all hearts.
ਸਰਨਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਟਿ ਮਹਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥
saran teree katt mahaa berree ik naam dehi adhaaraa |
I seek Your Sanctuary; please, cut away these heavy bonds, and give me the Support of the One Name.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰ ਦੇਇ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਰਾ ॥੪॥
binavant naanak kar dee raakhahu gobind deen deaaraa |4|
Prays Nanak, please, give me Your Hand and save me, O Lord of the Universe, Merciful to the meek. ||4||
ਸੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਗਣਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
so din safal ganiaa har prabhoo milaaeaa raam |
That day is judged to be fruitful, when I merged with my Lord.
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਪਰਗਟਿਆ ਦੁਖ ਦੂਰਿ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
sabh sukh paragattiaa dukh door paraaeaa raam |
Total happiness was revealed, and pain was taken far away.
ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਅਨਦ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਗੁਨ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਈਐ ॥
sukh sehaj anad binod sad hee gun gupaal nit gaaeeai |
Peace, tranquility, joy and eternal happiness come from constantly singing the Glorious Praises of the Sustainer of the World.
ਭਜੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੇ ਮਿਲੇ ਰੰਗੇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਧਾਈਐ ॥
bhaj saadhasange mile range bahurr jon na dhaaeeai |
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I lovingly remember the Lord; I shall not wander again in reincarnation.
ਗਹਿ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਏ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ਆਦਿ ਅੰਕੁਰੁ ਆਇਆ ॥
geh kantth laae sehaj subhaae aad ankur aaeaa |
He has naturally hugged me close in His Loving Embrace, and the seed of my primal destiny has sprouted.
