ਏਕੁ ਬਧੂ ਜੁਤ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਨ ਥੋ ਤਿਹ ਯਾ ਜਗੁ ਬੀਚ ਬਡੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
ek badhoo jut braahaman tho tih yaa jag beech baddo dukh paayo |
There was a married Brahmin, who had undergone great suffering
ਦੁਖਿਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਇਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਮੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜੋ ਜਗ ਗਾਯੋ ॥
dukhit hvai ik divas kahiyo tih mitr hai mo prabh jo jag gaayo |
Being greatly afflicted, one day he said (to his wife) that Krishna was his friend
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰੀਯਾ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਜਾਹੁ ਤਹਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਮਾਨਤ ਭਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਮੂੰਡ ਮੁਡਾਯੋ ॥
taa kee treeyaa kahiyo jaahu tahaa sun maanat bhayo tih moondd muddaayo |
His wife said, “You go to your friend,” the Brahmin agreed after getting his head shaved,
ਤੰਦੁਲ ਲੈ ਦਿਜ ਦਾਰਦੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਸੁ ਦੁਆਰਵਤੀ ਹੂ ਕੀ ਓਰਿ ਸਿਧਾਯੋ ॥੨੪੦੫॥
tandul lai dij daaradee haath su duaaravatee hoo kee or sidhaayo |2405|
That poor man took a small quantity of rice and started towards Dwarka/2405.

ਹਉ ਅਰੁ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਸੰਦੀਪਨ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਬੀਚ ਪੜੇ ਹਿਤ ਹੈ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਕਰਿ ॥
hau ar sayaam sandeepan ke greh beech parre hit hai at hee kar |
ਹਉ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਧਰਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਰਹਿਓ ਰਹੈ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹੈ ਸੁ ਸ︀ਯਾਮਹਿ ਮੋ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਧਰਿ ॥
hau chit mai dhar sayaam rahio rahai hvai hai su sayaameh mo chit mai dhar |
I and Krishna have been studying together with out teacher Sandipan, when I remember Krishna, then he may also be remembering me
ਦੈ ਧਨ ਪਾਇ ਘਨੋ ਘਰਿ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਦੀਨਨ ਦੇਤ ਨ ਨੈਕੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ॥
dai dhan paae ghano ghar mai kachh deenan det na naik kripaa kar |
He gives so much to the helpless people, he may also kindly give me something
ਈਸ ਲਹੈ ਕਿਧੋ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਹਾਰ ਕੈ ਕੈਸੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ਹਮ ਪੈ ਹਰਿ ॥੨੪੦੬॥
ees lahai kidho mohi nihaar kai kaisee kripaa kar hai ham pai har |2406|
But I cannot say, only the Lord knows, whether he will do such thing with me.”2406.
ਮਾਰਗ ਨਾਖ ਕੈ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਜਬੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਕੇ ਭੀਤਰ ਆਯੋ ॥
maarag naakh kai bipr jabai grihi sree jadubeer ke bheetar aayo |
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਨਾਥ ਨਿਹਾਰਤ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੁ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਸੁਦਾਮਾ ਇਹੈ ਠਹਰਾਯੋ ॥
sree brijanaath nihaarat taeh su bipr sudaamaa ihai tthaharaayo |
After finishing his journey, when the Brahmin reached the residence of Krishna, Krishna recognised him that he was the Brahmin Sudama
ਆਸਨ ਤੇ ਉਠਿ ਆਤੁਰ ਹੁਇ ਅਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਢਾਇ ਕੈ ਲੈਬੇ ਕਉ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
aasan te utth aatur hue at preet badtaae kai laibe kau dhaayo |
He advanced forward to receive him, affectionately, leaving his seat
ਪਾਇ ਪਰਿਓ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਉਠਿ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਗਾਯੋ ॥੨੪੦੭॥
paae pario tih ko har jee fir sayaam bhanai utth kantth lagaayo |2407|
He touched his feet and then hugged him.2407.
ਲੈ ਤਿਹ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਗਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਕਰਿ ਆਦਰੁ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
lai tih mandir maeh gayo tih ko at hee kar aadar keeno |
He took him to his palace and welcomed and honoured him
ਬਾਰਿ ਮੰਗਾਇ ਤਹੀ ਦਿਜ ਕੋ ਦੋਊ ਪਾਇਨ ਧ੍ਵੈ ਚਰਨਾਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਲੀਨੋ ॥
baar mangaae tahee dij ko doaoo paaein dhvai charanaamrit leeno |
He caused water to be brought, with which he washed the feet of the Brahmin, he also drank the washings of the feet
ਝੌਪਰੀ ਤੇ ਤਿਹ ਠਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਸੁਭ ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋ ਪੁਨਿ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
jhauaparee te tih tthaa har joo subh kanchan ko pun mandar keeno |
On the other side, he transformed his hut into a palace
ਤਉ ਨ ਸਕਿਓ ਸੁ ਬਿਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਬਿਪਹਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਤਿਹ ਰੰਚ ਨ ਦੀਨੋ ॥੨੪੦੮॥
tau na sakio su bidaa kar bipeh sayaam bhanai tih ranch na deeno |2408|
Doing all this, he bade farewell to the Brahmin and apparently, he did not give him anything.2408.

ਸਭਿ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਜੋ ਜੀਇ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਰਾਮ ॥
sabh jeea tere toon varatadaa mere har prabh toon jaaneh jo jee kamaaeeai raam |
All beings are Yours - You permeate them all. O my Lord God, You know what they do in their hearts.
ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਾਲਿ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਸਭ ਵੇਖੈ ਮਨਿ ਮੁਕਰਾਈਐ ਰਾਮ ॥
har antar baahar naal hai meree jindurree sabh vekhai man mukaraaeeai raam |
The Lord is with them, inwardly and outwardly, O my soul; He sees everything, but the mortal denies the Lord in his mind.
ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਸਭ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਘਾਲ ਗਵਾਈਐ ਰਾਮ ॥
manamukhaa no har door hai meree jindurree sabh birathee ghaal gavaaeeai raam |
The Lord is far away from the self-willed manmukhs, O my soul; all their efforts are in vain.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਹਰਿ ਹਾਜਰੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਈਐ ਰਾਮ ॥੧॥
jan naanak guramukh dhiaaeaa meree jindurree har haajar nadaree aaeeai raam |1|
Servant Nanak, as Gurmukh, meditates on the Lord, O my soul; he beholds the Lord ever-present. ||1||
ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਸੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
se bhagat se sevak meree jindurree jo prabh mere man bhaane raam |
They are devotees, and they are servants, O my soul, who are pleasing to the Mind of my God.
ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਨਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
se har daragah painaaeaa meree jindurree ahinis saach samaane raam |
They are robed in honor in the Court of the Lord, O my soul; night and day, they remain absorbed in the True Lord.
ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
tin kai sang mal utarai meree jindurree rang raate nadar neesaane raam |
In their company, the filth of one's sins is washed away, O my soul; imbued with the Lord's Love, one comes to bear the Mark of His Grace.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਘਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥੨॥
naanak kee prabh benatee meree jindurree mil saadhoo sang aghaane raam |2|
Nanak offers his prayer to God, O my soul; joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, he is satisfied. ||2||
ਹੇ ਰਸਨਾ ਜਪਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥
he rasanaa jap gobindo meree jindurree jap har har trisanaa jaae raam |
O tongue, chant the Name of God; O my soul, chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, your desires shall be extinguished.
ਜਿਸੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥
jis deaa kare meraa paarabraham meree jindurree tis man naam vasaae raam |
He, unto whom my Supreme Lord God shows Mercy, O my soul, enshrines the Name in his mind.
ਜਿਸੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥
jis bhette pooraa satiguroo meree jindurree so har dhan nidh paae raam |
One who meets the Perfect True Guru, O my soul, obtains the treasure of the Lord's wealth.
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥੩॥
vaddabhaagee sangat milai meree jindurree naanak har gun gaae raam |3|
By great good fortune, one joins the Company of the Holy, O my soul. O Nanak, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||
ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
thaan thanantar rav rahiaa meree jindurree paarabraham prabh daataa raam |
In the places and interspaces, O my soul, the Supreme Lord God, the Great Giver, is pervading.
ਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
taa kaa ant na paaeeai meree jindurree pooran purakh bidhaataa raam |
His limits cannot be found, O my soul; He is the Perfect Architect of Destiny.
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਦਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲਕ ਪਿਤ ਮਾਤਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
sarab jeea pratipaaladaa meree jindurree jiau baalak pit maataa raam |
He cherishes all beings, O my soul, as the mother and father cherish their child.
ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਰਾਮ ॥੪॥੬॥ ਛਕਾ ੧ ॥
sehas siaanap neh milai meree jindurree jan naanak guramukh jaataa raam |4|6| chhakaa 1 |
By thousands of clever tricks, He cannot be obtained, O my soul; servant Nanak, as Gurmukh, has come to know the Lord. ||4||6|| First Set of Six||

har kaa ek achanbhau dekhiaa mere laal jeeo jo kare su dharam niaae raam |
I have seen one miracle of the Lord, O my Dear Beloved - whatever He does is righteous and just.
ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਅਖਾੜਾ ਪਾਇਓਨੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੀਉ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਸਬਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥
har rang akhaarraa paaeon mere laal jeeo aavan jaan sabaae raam |
The Lord has fashioned this beautiful arena, O my Dear Beloved, where all come and go.
ਆਵਣੁ ਤ ਜਾਣਾ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਕੀਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਮੇਦਨਿ ਸਿਰਜੀਆ ॥
aavan ta jaanaa tineh keea jin medan sirajeea |
The One who fashioned the world causes them to come and go.
ਇਕਨਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਏ ਇਕਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਫਿਰਦਿਆ ॥
eikanaa mel satigur mehal bulaae ik bharam bhoole firadiaa |
Some meet the True Guru - the Lord invites them into the Mansion of His Presence; others wander around, deluded by doubt.
ਅੰਤੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
ant teraa toonhai jaaneh toon sabh meh rahiaa samaae |
You alone know Your limits; You are contained in all.
ਸਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਧਰਮ ਨਿਆਏ ॥੧॥
sach kahai naanak sunahu santahu har varatai dharam niaae |1|
Nanak speaks the Truth: listen, Saints - the Lord dispenses even-handed justice. ||1||
ਆਵਹੁ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੀਉ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
aavahu milahu saheleeho mere laal jeeo har har naam araadhe raam |
Come and join me, O my beautiful dear beloveds; let's worship the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਕਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੀਉ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਸਾਧੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
kar sevahu pooraa satiguroo mere laal jeeo jam kaa maarag saadhe raam |
Let's serve the Perfect True Guru, O my dear beloveds, and clear away the Path of Death.
ਮਾਰਗੁ ਬਿਖੜਾ ਸਾਧਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
maarag bikharraa saadh guramukh har daragah sobhaa paaeeai |
Having cleared the treacherous path, as Gurmukhs, we shall obtain honor in the Court of the Lord.
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਬਿਧਾਤੈ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਰੈਣਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
jin kau bidhaatai dhurahu likhiaa tinaa rain din liv laaeeai |
Those who have such pre-ordained destiny, lovingly focus their consciousness on the Lord, night and day.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਛੁਟਾ ਜਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਾਧੇ ॥
haumai mamataa mohu chhuttaa jaa sang miliaa saadhe |
Self-conceit, egotism and emotional attachment are eradicated when one joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਜਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਹੋਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧੇ ॥੨॥
jan kahai naanak mukat hoaa har har naam araadhe |2|
Says servant Nanak, one who contemplates the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is liberated. ||2||
ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਇ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੀਉ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪੂਜੇਹਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
kar jorrihu sant ikatr hoe mere laal jeeo abinaasee purakh poojehaa raam |
Let's join hands, O Saints; let's come together, O my dear beloveds, and worship the imperishable, Almighty Lord.
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਖੋਜੀਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੀਉ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਅਰਪੇਹਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
bahu bidh poojaa khojeea mere laal jeeo ihu man tan sabh arapehaa raam |
I sought Him through uncounted forms of adoration, O my dear beloveds; now, I dedicate my entire mind and body to the Lord.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕੇਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਪੂਜ ਚੜਾਵਏ ॥
man tan dhan sabh prabhoo keraa kiaa ko pooj charraave |
The mind, body and all wealth belong to God; so what can anyone offer to Him in worship?
ਜਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵਏ ॥
jis hoe kripaal deaal suaamee so prabh ank samaave |
He alone merges in the lap of God, unto whom the Merciful Lord Master becomes compassionate.
ਭਾਗੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹੋਇ ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਸਨੇਹਾ ॥
bhaag masatak hoe jis kai tis gur naal sanehaa |
One who has such pre-ordained destiny written on his forehead, comes to bear love for the Guru.
ਜਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੂਜੇਹਾ ॥੩॥
jan kahai naanak mil saadhasangat har har naam poojehaa |3|
Says servant Nanak, joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, let's worship the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||
ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਖੋਜਤ ਹਮ ਫਿਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੀਉ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਅੜਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਏ ਰਾਮ ॥
deh dis khojat ham fire mere laal jeeo har paaeiarraa ghar aae raam |
I wandered around, searching in the ten directions, O my dear beloveds, but I came to find the Lord in the home of my own being.
ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੀਉ ਹਰਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥
har mandar har jeeo saajiaa mere laal jeeo har tis meh rahiaa samaae raam |
The Dear Lord has fashioned the body as the temple of the Lord, O my dear beloveds; the Lord continues to dwell there.
ਸਰਬੇ ਸਮਾਣਾ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇਆ ॥
sarabe samaanaa aap suaamee guramukh paragatt hoeaa |
The Lord and Master Himself is pervading everywhere; through the Guru, He is revealed.
ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅਧੇਰਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਨਾਠਾ ਅਮਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚੋਇਆ ॥
mittiaa adheraa dookh naatthaa amiau har ras choeaa |
Darkness is dispelled, and pains are removed, when the sublime essence of the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar trickles down.
ਜਹਾ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਭ ਠਾਏ ॥
jahaa dekhaa tahaa suaamee paarabraham sabh tthaae |
Wherever I look, the Lord and Master is there. The Supreme Lord God is everywhere.
ਜਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਅੜਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਏ ॥੪॥੧॥
jan kahai naanak satigur milaaeaa har paaeiarraa ghar aae |4|1|
Says servant Nanak, meeting the True Guru, I have found the Lord, within the home of my own being. ||4||1||
