ਤਬ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਿਖਿਨ ਇਹੈ ਜੀਅ ਧਾਰੋ ॥
tab mil rikhin ihai jeea dhaaro |
ਏਕ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਹੈ ਬਡੋ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥
ek satru hai baddo hamaaro |
ਬਲਲ ਨਾਮ ਹਲਧਰ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਰੋ ॥
balal naam haladhar tih maaro |
ਮਾਨੋ ਤਿਹ ਪੈ ਕਾਲ ਪਚਾਰੋ ॥੨੩੯੨॥
maano tih pai kaal pachaaro |2392|
Then the sages thought in their mind that there was a very great enemy of their, whose name was Balal, “O Balram! destroy him, manifesting yourself as Death.”2392.

ਕਹਾ ਠਉਰ ਤਿਹ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਕੀ ਕਹੋ ਰਿਖਿਨ ਕੇ ਰਾਜ ॥
kahaa tthaur tih satru kee kaho rikhin ke raaj |
ਮੋਹਿ ਬਤਾਵੈ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਉ ਤਾਹਿ ਹਨੋ ਅਉ ਆਜੁ ॥੨੩੯੩॥
mohi bataavai jaeh kau taeh hano aau aaj |2393|
“O sages! where does that enemy live? Tell me his place, so that I may kill him today.”2393.

ਤਬ ਇਕ ਰਿਖ ਨੈ ਜਾਇ ਬਤਾਯੋ ॥

ਤਹਾ ਠਉਰ ਹੋ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥
tahaa tthaur ho satru banaayo |
Then one of the sages showed him the place, where the enemy was living
ਜਬ ਹਲਧਰਿ ਸੋ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
jab haladhar so satr nihaariyo |
ਹਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਰੁ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਪਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੨੩੯੪॥
ham sang lar ih bhaat pachaariyo |2394|
Balram saw the enemy, and challenged him for fighting.2394.
ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਤਬ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਰਿਸਾਯੋ ॥
sunat bachan tab satru risaayo |
ਹਾਥ ਗਾਗਨੋ ਯਾ ਪਰਿ ਆਯੋ ॥
haath gaagano yaa par aayo |
Hearing the challenge, the enemy was infuriated and on this side, these people, with the signs of their hands, told Balram everything
ਹਲਧਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੁਧ ਤਿਹ ਕੀਓ ॥
haladhar sang judh tih keeo |
ਜਿਹ ਸਮ ਠਉਰ ਬੀਰ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਓ ॥੨੩੯੫॥
jih sam tthaur beer nahee beeo |2395|
That enemy fought the battle with Balram, there has been no mughty warrior like Balram.2395.
ਬਹੁਤ ਜੁਧ ਤਿਹ ਠਾ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਧਾਰੋ ॥
bahut judh tih tthaa duhoon dhaaro |
ਦੁਹੂੰ ਸੂਰ ਤੇ ਏਕ ਨ ਹਾਰੋ ॥
duhoon soor te ek na haaro |
A dreadful battle was fought at that place, and none of both the warriors was defeated
ਜਉ ਥਕਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਬੈਠ ਤਹ ਰਹੈ ॥
jau thak jaeh baitth teh rahai |
ਮੁਛਿਤ ਹੋਹਿ ਜੁਧੁ ਫਿਰ ਚਹੈ ॥੨੩੯੬॥
muchhit hohi judh fir chahai |2396|
They would sit when they felt tired and on becoming unconscious, they expressed their wish to continued fighting.2396.
ਫਿਰਿ ਦੋਊ ਗਾਜਿ ਗਾਜਿ ਰਨ ਪਾਰੈ ॥
fir doaoo gaaj gaaj ran paarai |
ਆਪਸ ਬੀਚ ਗਦਾ ਬਹੁ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
aapas beech gadaa bahu maarai |
Then again they thundered and continued the fight and began to strike their maces on each other
ਠਾਢ ਰਹੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਪੈਗ ਨ ਟਰੈ ॥
tthaadt rahai thir paig na ttarai |
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਰਿਸਿ ਪਰਬਤ ਦੋਊ ਲਰੈ ॥੨੩੯੭॥
maanahu ris parabat doaoo larai |2397|
They were stable and did not recede even one step, it seemed that two mountains were fighting against each other.2397.
ਦੋਊ ਭਟ ਅਭ੍ਰਨ ਜਿਉ ਗਾਜੈ ॥
doaoo bhatt abhran jiau gaajai |
ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਜਮ ਲਾਜੈ ॥
bachan sunat jin ke jam laajai |
Both the warriors were thundering like clouds, hearing their voices, even Yama got fearful
ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਬੀਰ ਰਿਸਹਿ ਮੈ ਭਰੈ ॥
at hee beer riseh mai bharai |
ਦੋਊ ਬੀਰ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਸੋ ਲਰੈ ॥੨੩੯੮॥
doaoo beer krodh so larai |2398|
Both the warriors were fighting with each other filled with anger.2398.
ਜਿਨ ਕਉਤੁਕ ਦੇਖਨ ਸੁਰ ਆਏ ॥
jin kautuk dekhan sur aae |
ਭਾਤਿਨ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਿਵਾਨ ਬਨਾਏ ॥
bhaatin bhaat bivaan banaae |
In order to see this wonderful spectacle, even the gods came in their various types of air-vehicles
ਉਤ ਰੰਭਾਦਿਕ ਨਿਰਤਹਿ ਕਰੈ ॥
aut ranbhaadik nirateh karai |
ਇਤ ਤੇ ਬੀਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਮੈ ਲਰੈ ॥੨੩੯੯॥
eit te beer bhoom mai larai |2399|
On that side the heavenly damsel like Rambha began to dance and on this side, these warriors were fighting on the earth.2399.
ਬਹੁਤ ਗਦਾ ਤਨ ਲਗੇ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
bahut gadaa tan lage na jaanai |
ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਮਾਰਹਿ ਮਾਰ ਬਖਾਨੈ ॥
mukh te maareh maar bakhaanai |
They were not caring for the blows of the maces and were uttering the shouts of “kill, kill” from their mouths
ਰਨ ਕੀ ਛਿਤ ਤੇ ਪੈਗੁ ਨ ਟਰੈ ॥
ran kee chhit te paig na ttarai |
ਰੀਝਿ ਰੀਝਿ ਦੋਊ ਭਟ ਲਰੈ ॥੨੪੦੦॥
reejh reejh doaoo bhatt larai |2400|
They were not receding even one step in the battlefield and both of them were fighting delightfully.2400.

SWAYYA
ਜੁਧੁ ਭਯੋ ਬਹੁਤੋ ਤਿਹ ਠਾ ਤਬ ਮੂਸਲ ਕਉ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਜੂ ਸੰਭਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
judh bhayo bahuto tih tthaa tab moosal kau musalee joo sanbhaariyo |
ਕੈ ਬਲ ਹਾਥਨ ਦੋਊਨ ਕੇ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਤਕਿ ਘਾਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਯੋ ॥
kai bal haathan doaoon ke kab sayaam kahai tak ghaeh prahaarayo |
After the continuation of war for a long time, Balram held his huge mace and powerfully struck it with both the hands on the enemy
ਲਾਗਤ ਘਾ ਇਹ ਕੈ ਮਰਿ ਗਯੋ ਅਰਿ ਅੰਤਕ ਕੇ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਮਿ ਸਿਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
laagat ghaa ih kai mar gayo ar antak ke fun dhaam sidhaariyo |
When the blow struck him, he died and went to the next world
ਯੌ ਬਲਿਭਦ੍ਰ ਹਨਿਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਸਭ ਬਿਪਨ ਕੋ ਫੁਨਿ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੨੪੦੧॥
yau balibhadr haniyo tih ko sabh bipan ko fun kaaj savaariyo |2401|
In this way killing him, Balram completed the task assigned to him by the Brahmins.2401.
ਪਉਰਖ ਜੋ ਮੂਸਲੀਧਰਿ ਕੋ ਕਹਿਓ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਉ ਸੁਕਦੇਵ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
paurakh jo moosaleedhar ko kahio nrip kau sukadev sunaayo |
In this way, Shukdev related the bravery of Balram to the king
ਜਾਹਿ ਕਥਾ ਦਿਜ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਸੁਨੀ ਤਿਨ ਹੂ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
jaeh kathaa dij ke mukh te sabh sraun sunee tin hoo sukh paayo |
Whosoever has heard this story from the mouth of a Brahmin, he obtained happiness
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕੀਏ ਸਸਿ ਸੂਰ ਨਿਸਾ ਦਿਵ ਤਾਹੀ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨੋ ਜੀਅ ਆਯੋ ॥
jaa ke kee sas soor nisaa div taahee kee baat suno jeea aayo |
ਤਾਹੀ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨਾਉ ਦਿਜੋਤਮ ਬੇਦਨ ਕੈ ਜੋਊ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੨੪੦੨॥
taahee kee baat sunaau dijotam bedan kai joaoo bhed na paayo |2402|
“He, whose creation are the sun and moon, and day and night we should listen to his words. O great Brahmin! relate the story of Him, whose secret has not even been comprehended by the Vedas.2402.
ਜਾਹਿ ਖੜਾਨਨ ਸੇ ਸਹਸਾਨਨ ਖੋਜਿ ਰਹੇ ਕਛੁ ਪਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
jaeh kharraanan se sahasaanan khoj rahe kachh paar na paayo |
“He, whom, Kartikeya and Sheshnaga searched and got tired, but they could not know His end
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਜਿਹ ਕਉ ਚਤੁਰਾਨਨ ਬੇਦਨ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਭੀਤਰ ਗਾਯੋ ॥
sayaam bhanai jih kau chaturaanan bedan ke gun bheetar gaayo |
He, who has been eulogised by Brahma in the Vedas.
ਖੋਜ ਰਹੇ ਸਿਵ ਸੇ ਜਿਹ ਅੰਤ ਅਨੰਤ ਕਹਿਓ ਥਕਿ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
khoj rahe siv se jih ant anant kahio thak ant na paayo |
“He, whom Shiva etc. had been searching, but could not know His Mystery
ਤਾਹੀ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨੋ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਕਦੇਵ ਇਹੈ ਠਹਰਾਯੋ ॥੨੪੦੩॥
taahee kee baat suno tumare mukh te sukadev ihai tthaharaayo |2403|
O Shukdev! relate to me the story of that Lord.”2403.
ਭੂਪਤਿ ਜਉ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਕ ਕਉ ਸੁਕ ਹੂ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੁਨਾਈ ॥
bhoopat jau ih bhaat kahiyo suk kau suk hoo ih bhaat sunaaee |
When the king said this, then Shukdev replied,
ਦੀਨ ਦਿਆਲ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨਾਵ ਹੋਂ ਤੁਹਿ ਕਉ ਤੁਹਿ ਭੇਦੁ ਛਪਾਈ ॥
deen diaal kee baat sunaav hon tuhi kau tuhi bhed chhapaaee |
“I am relating to you the mystery of that Merciful Lord, who is the support of the oppressed
ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਸੁਦਾਮਾ ਹੁਤੋ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਹਉ ਕਹੋ ਹਰਿ ਜੈਸੇ ਮਿਟਾਈ ॥
bipr sudaamaa huto bipataa tih kee hau kaho har jaise mittaaee |
“Now I relate this how the Lord removed the suffering of the Brahmin named Sudama
ਸੋ ਹਉ ਸੁਨਾਵਤ ਹਉ ਤੁਹਿ ਕਉ ਸੁਨ ਲੈ ਸੋਊ ਸ੍ਰਉਨਨ ਦੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰਾਈ ॥੨੪੦੪॥
so hau sunaavat hau tuhi kau sun lai soaoo sraunan de nrip raaee |2404|
O king! now I relate that, listen attentively,”2404.

Bihaagraa, Fourth Mehl:
ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਤੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂੜ ਇਆਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
jin har har naam na chetio meree jindurree te manamukh moorr eaane raam |
Those who do not remember the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my soul - those self-willed manmukhs are foolish and ignorant.
ਜੋ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਦੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਸੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
jo mohi maaeaa chit laaeide meree jindurree se ant ge pachhutaane raam |
Those who attach their consciousness to emotional attachment and Maya, O my soul, depart regretfully in the end.
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਲਹਨੑਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜੋ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਾਪਿ ਲੁਭਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
har daragah dtoee naa lehana meree jindurree jo manamukh paap lubhaane raam |
They find no place of rest in the Court of the Lord, O my soul; those self-willed manmukhs are deluded by sin.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥੧॥
jan naanak gur mil ubare meree jindurree har jap har naam samaane raam |1|
O servant Nanak, those who meet the Guru are saved, O my soul; chanting the Name of the Lord, they are absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||1||
ਸਭਿ ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈ ਰਾਮ ॥
sabh jaae milahu satiguroo kau meree jindurree jo har har naam drirraavai raam |
Go, everyone, and meet the True Guru; O my soul, He implants the Name of the Lord, Har, har, within the heart.
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਦਿਆ ਖਿਨੁ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਕੀਜਈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਮਤੁ ਕਿ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਾਹੁ ਆਵੈ ਕਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਮ ॥
har japadiaa khin dtil na keejee meree jindurree mat ki jaapai saahu aavai ki na aavai raam |
Do not hesitate for an instant - meditate on the Lord, O my soul; who knows whether he shall draw another breath?
ਸਾ ਵੇਲਾ ਸੋ ਮੂਰਤੁ ਸਾ ਘੜੀ ਸੋ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਮ ॥
saa velaa so moorat saa gharree so muhat safal hai meree jindurree jit har meraa chit aavai raam |
That time, that moment, that instant, that second is so fruitful, O my soul, when my Lord comes into my mind.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜਮਕੰਕਰੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਮ ॥੨॥
jan naanak naam dhiaaeaa meree jindurree jamakankar nerr na aavai raam |2|
Servant Nanak has meditated on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O my soul, and now, the Messenger of Death does not draw near him. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸੁਣੈ ਨਿਤ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਸੋ ਡਰੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਤੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
har vekhai sunai nit sabh kichh meree jindurree so ddarai jin paap kamate raam |
The Lord continually watches, and hears everything, O my soul; he alone is afraid, who commits sins.
ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਤਿਨਿ ਜਨਿ ਸਭਿ ਡਰ ਸੁਟਿ ਘਤੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
jis antar hiradaa sudh hai meree jindurree tin jan sabh ddar sutt ghate raam |
One whose heart is pure within, O my soul, casts off all his fears.
ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤੀਜਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਸਭਿ ਝਖ ਮਾਰਨੁ ਦੁਸਟ ਕੁਪਤੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
har nirbhau naam pateejiaa meree jindurree sabh jhakh maaran dusatt kupate raam |
One who has faith in the Fearless Name of the Lord, O my soul - all his enemies and attackers speak against him in vain.
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਨਾਨਕਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੈਰੀ ਆਣਿ ਸਭਿ ਘਤੇ ਰਾਮ ॥੩॥
gur pooraa naanak seviaa meree jindurree jin pairee aan sabh ghate raam |3|
Nanak has served the Perfect Guru, O my soul, who causes all to fall at His feet. ||3||
ਸੋ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਤ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਦੂ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਵਡਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
so aisaa har nit seveeai meree jindurree jo sabh doo saahib vaddaa raam |
Serve such a Lord continuously, O my soul, who is the Great Lord and Master of all.
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਤਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਦੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਚਡਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
jinaee ik man ik araadhiaa meree jindurree tinaa naahee kisai dee kichh chaddaa raam |
Those who single-mindedly worship Him in adoration, O my soul, are not subservient to anyone.
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਝਖ ਮਾਰਨੁ ਸਭਿ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਘੰਡਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
gur seviai har mehal paaeaa meree jindurree jhakh maaran sabh nindak ghanddaa raam |
Serving the Guru, I have obtained the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, O my soul; all the slanderers and trouble-makers bark in vain.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਛਡਾ ਰਾਮ ॥੪॥੫॥
jan naanak naam dhiaaeaa meree jindurree dhur masatak har likh chhaddaa raam |4|5|
Servant Nanak has meditated on the Name, O my soul; such is the pre-ordained destiny which the Lord written on his forehead. ||4||5||
