ਭੂਲ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੈ ਘਟ ਕਾਮ ਕੀਯੋ ਤੁਮ ਸੋ ਜੁ ਪੈ ਜੁਧ ਚਹਿਯੋ ॥
bhool pariyo prabh mai ghatt kaam keeyo tum so ju pai judh chahiyo |
“O Lord! I have executed a very mean task in thinking of fighting with you
ਤੋ ਕਹਾ ਭਯੋ ਜੋ ਰਿਸਿ ਆਇ ਭਿਰਿਯੋ ਤੁ ਕਹਾ ਇਹ ਠਾ ਮੇਰੋ ਮਾਨ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥
to kahaa bhayo jo ris aae bhiriyo tu kahaa ih tthaa mero maan rahiyo |
What! if I fought with you in my fury, but you have shattered my pride at this place
ਤੁਮਰੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਹੀ ਸਹਸ ਫਨਿ ਅਉਰ ਚਤੁਰਾਨਨ ਹਾਰਿ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥
tumare gun gaavat hee sehas fan aaur chaturaanan haar rahiyo |
Sheshnaga and Brahma have become tired of praising you
ਤੁਮਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਉਨ ਗਨੈ ਕਹ ਲਉ ਜਿਹ ਬੇਦ ਸਕੈ ਨਹਿ ਭੇਦ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥੨੨੩੬॥
tumare gun kaun ganai keh lau jih bed sakai neh bhed kahiyo |2236|
To what extent your virtues may be described? Because the Vedas could not completely describe your secret.”2236.

ਕਾ ਭਯੋ ਜੋ ਧਰਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਜਟਾ ਸੋ ਤਪੋਧਨ ਕੋ ਜਗ ਭੇਖ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ ॥
kaa bhayo jo dhar moondd jattaa so tapodhan ko jag bhekh dikhaayo |
What then, if someone roamed wearing matted locks and adopting different guises
ਕਾ ਭਯੋ ਜੁ ਕੋਊ ਲੋਚਨ ਮੂੰਦਿ ਭਲੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਯੋ ॥
kaa bhayo ju koaoo lochan moond bhalee bidh so har ko gun gaayo |
Closing his eyes and singing the Praises of the Lord,
ਅਉਰ ਕਹਾ ਜੋ ਪੈ ਆਰਤੀ ਲੈ ਕਰਿ ਧੂਪ ਜਗਾਇ ਕੈ ਸੰਖ ਬਜਾਯੋ ॥
aaur kahaa jo pai aaratee lai kar dhoop jagaae kai sankh bajaayo |
And performing your aarti (circumambulation) by burning the incenses and blowing the conches
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਨ ਕਹੋ ਬਿਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਿਹੂ ਬ੍ਰਿਜ ਨਾਇਕ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੨੨੩੭॥
sayaam kahai tum hee na kaho bin prem kihoo brij naaeik paayo |2237|
Buy the poet Shyam says that without love one cannot realise God, the hero of Braja.2237.
ਤਿਉ ਚਤੁਰਾਨਨ ਤਿਉਹੂ ਖੜਾਨਨ ਤਿਉ ਸਹਸਾਨਨ ਹੀ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਯੋ ॥
tiau chaturaanan tiauhoo kharraanan tiau sahasaanan hee gun gaayo |
ਨਾਰਦ ਸਕ੍ਰ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਵ ਬ︀ਯਾਸ ਇਤੇ ਗੁਨ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕੋ ਗਾਇ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
naarad sakr sadaa siv bayaas ite gun sayaam ko gaae sunaayo |
Brahma, Kartikeya, Sheshnaga, Narada, Indra, Shiva, Vyasa etc, all are singing the praise of God
ਚਾਰੋ ਈ ਬੇਦ ਨ ਭੇਦ ਲਹਿਯੋ ਜਗ ਖੋਜਤ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਪਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
chaaro ee bed na bhed lahiyo jag khojat hai sabh paar na paayo |
All the four Vedas, seeking Him, have not been able to comprehend His mystery
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਨ ਕਹੋ ਬਿਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਹੂ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਨਾਥ ਰਿਝਾਯੋ ॥੨੨੩੮॥
sayaam bhanai tum hee na kaho bin prem kahoo brijanaath rijhaayo |2238|
The poet Sham says, tell me whether without love, someone has been able to please that Lord of Braja.2238.

ਪਾਇ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਸਿਵ ਜੂ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਮੋ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
paae pariyo siv joo har ke kahiyo mo binatee har joo sun leejai |
Shiva said, holding the feet of Krishna, “O Lord! listen to my request
ਸੇਵਕ ਮਾਗਤ ਹੈ ਬਰੁ ਏਕ ਵਹੈ ਅਬ ਰੀਝਿ ਦਇਆ ਨਿਧਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
sevak maagat hai bar ek vahai ab reejh deaa nidh deejai |
This servant of your is asking for a boon, kindly bestow on me the same
ਹੇਰਿ ਹਮੈ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਰਸ ਕੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
her hamai kab sayaam bhanai kabahoon karunaa ras ke sang bheejai |
“O Lord! looking towards me, mercifully, give your consent not to kill Sahasrabahu,
ਬਾਹੈ ਕਟੀ ਸਹਸ੍ਰਾਭੁਜ ਕੀ ਤੁ ਭਲੋ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਅਬ ਨਾਸੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੨੨੩੯॥
baahai kattee sahasraabhuj kee tu bhalo tih ko ab naas na keejai |2239|
Though his arms have been chopped.”2239.

Salok, Fifth Mehl:
ਕੋਟਿ ਬਿਘਨ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਾਗਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥
kott bighan tis laagate jis no visarai naau |
Millions of obstacles stand in the way of one who forgets the Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਿਲਪਤੇ ਜਿਉ ਸੁੰਞੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਉ ॥੧॥
naanak anadin bilapate jiau sunyai ghar kaau |1|
O Nanak, night and day, he croaks like a raven in a deserted house. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਪਿਰੀ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਜਾ ਥੀਐ ਸਾਈ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਰੁਤਿ ॥
piree milaavaa jaa theeai saaee suhaavee rut |
Beauteous is that season, when I am united with my Beloved.
ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨਹ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਵੀਐ ਨਿਤ ॥੨॥
gharree muhat neh veesarai naanak raveeai nit |2|
I do not forget Him for a moment or an instant; O Nanak, I contemplate Him constantly. ||2||

Pauree:
ਸੂਰਬੀਰ ਵਰੀਆਮ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਹੋੜੀਐ ॥
soorabeer vareeaam kinai na horreeai |
Even brave and mighty men cannot withstand the powerful
ਫਉਜ ਸਤਾਣੀ ਹਾਠ ਪੰਚਾ ਜੋੜੀਐ ॥
fauj sataanee haatth panchaa jorreeai |
And overwhelming army which the five passions have gathered.
ਦਸ ਨਾਰੀ ਅਉਧੂਤ ਦੇਨਿ ਚਮੋੜੀਐ ॥
das naaree aaudhoot den chamorreeai |
The ten organs of sensation attach even detached renunciates to sensory pleasures.
ਜਿਣਿ ਜਿਣਿ ਲੈਨੑਿ ਰਲਾਇ ਏਹੋ ਏਨਾ ਲੋੜੀਐ ॥
jin jin laina ralaae eho enaa lorreeai |
They seek to conquer and overpower them, and so increase their following.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਇਨ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਮੋੜੀਐ ॥
trai gun in kai vas kinai na morreeai |
The world of the three dispositions is under their influence; no one can stand against them.
ਭਰਮੁ ਕੋਟੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਖਾਈ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਤੋੜੀਐ ॥
bharam kott maaeaa khaaee kahu kit bidh torreeai |
So tell me - how can the fort of doubt and the moat of Maya be overcome?
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਆਰਾਧਿ ਬਿਖਮ ਦਲੁ ਫੋੜੀਐ ॥
gur pooraa aaraadh bikham dal forreeai |
Worshipping the Perfect Guru, this awesome force is subdued.
ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਰਹਾ ਕਰ ਜੋੜੀਐ ॥੧੫॥
hau tis agai din raat rahaa kar jorreeai |15|
I stand before Him, day and night, with my palms pressed together. ||15||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Salok, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਸਭੇ ਉਤਰਨਿ ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥
kilavikh sabhe utaran neet neet gun gaau |
All sins are washed away, by continually singing the Lord's Glories.
ਕੋਟਿ ਕਲੇਸਾ ਊਪਜਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥
kott kalesaa aoopajeh naanak bisarai naau |1|
Millions of afflictions are produced, O Nanak, when the Name is forgotten. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਭੇਟਿਐ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੁਗਤਿ ॥
naanak satigur bhettiai pooree hovai jugat |
O Nanak, meeting the True Guru, one comes to know the Perfect Way.
ਹਸੰਦਿਆ ਖੇਲੰਦਿਆ ਪੈਨੰਦਿਆ ਖਾਵੰਦਿਆ ਵਿਚੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ॥੨॥
hasandiaa khelandiaa painandiaa khaavandiaa viche hovai mukat |2|
While laughing, playing, dressing and eating, he is liberated. ||2||

Pauree:
ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਭਰਮ ਗੜੁ ਤੋੜਿਆ ॥
so satigur dhan dhan jin bharam garr torriaa |
Blessed, blessed is the True Guru, who has demolished the fortress of doubt.
ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੋੜਿਆ ॥
so satigur vaahu vaahu jin har siau jorriaa |
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail! Hail! to the True Guru, who has united me with the Lord.
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਇ ਦਾਰੂਓ ॥
naam nidhaan akhutt gur dee daarooo |
The Guru has given me the medicine of the inexhaustible treasure of the Naam.
ਮਹਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ਤਿਨੈ ਬਿਦਾਰੂਓ ॥
mahaa rog bikaraal tinai bidaarooo |
He has banished the great and terrible disease.
ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਖਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
paaeaa naam nidhaan bahut khajaaniaa |
I have obtained the great treasure of the wealth of the Naam.
ਜਿਤਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥
jitaa janam apaar aap pachhaaniaa |
I have obtained eternal life, recognizing my own self.
ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਗੁਰ ਸਮਰਥ ਦੇਵ ॥
mahimaa kahee na jaae gur samarath dev |
The Glory of the all-powerful Divine Guru cannot be described.
ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵ ॥੧੬॥
gur paarabraham paramesur aparanpar alakh abhev |16|
The Guru is the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord, infinite, unseen and unknowable. ||16||
ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Salok, Fifth Mehl:
ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰੇਦਿਆ ਜੀਉ ਤੂੰ ਕਮਾਵਦਿਆ ਸੁਖ ਭੁੰਚੁ ॥
audam karediaa jeeo toon kamaavadiaa sukh bhunch |
Make the effort, and you shall live; practicing it, you shall enjoy peace.
ਧਿਆਇਦਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਉਤਰੀ ਚਿੰਤ ॥੧॥
dhiaaeidiaa toon prabhoo mil naanak utaree chint |1|
Meditating, you shall meet God, O Nanak, and your anxiety shall vanish. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਸੁਭ ਚਿੰਤਨ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਰਮਣ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗ ॥
subh chintan gobind raman niramal saadhoo sang |
Bless me with sublime thoughts, O Lord of the Universe, and contemplation in the immaculate Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵਿਸਰਉ ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੨॥
naanak naam na visrau ik gharree kar kirapaa bhagavant |2|
O Nanak, may I never forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, for even an instant; be merciful to me, Lord God. ||2||

Pauree:
ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਕਾਹੇ ਡਰਪੀਐ ॥
teraa keetaa hoe ta kaahe ddarapeeai |
Whatever happens is according to Your Will, so why should I be afraid?
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਨਾਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਜੀਉ ਅਰਪੀਐ ॥
jis mil japeeai naau tis jeeo arapeeai |
Meeting Him, I meditate on the Name - I offer my soul to Him.
ਆਇਐ ਚਿਤਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਬੇਸੁਮਾਰ ॥
aaeiai chit nihaal saahib besumaar |
When the Infinite Lord comes to mind, one is enraptured.
ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਪੋਹੇ ਕਵਣੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਲਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥
tis no pohe kavan jis val nirankaar |
Who can touch one who has the Formless Lord on his side?
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਬਾਹਰਾ ॥
sabh kichh tis kai vas na koee baaharaa |
Everything is under His control; no one is beyond Him.
ਸੋ ਭਗਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵੁਠਾ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਹਰਾ ॥
so bhagataa man vutthaa sach samaaharaa |
He, the True Lord, dwells in the minds of His devotees.
ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਤੂੰ ਰਖਣ ਵਾਲਿਆ ॥
tere daas dhiaaein tudh toon rakhan vaaliaa |
Your slaves meditate on You; You are the Savior, the Protector Lord.
ਸਿਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥੧੭॥
sir sabhanaa samarath nadar nihaaliaa |17|
You are the Almighty Overlord of all; You bless us with Your Glance of Grace. ||17||
