BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA
ਮਚੇ ਬੀਰ ਬੀਰੰ ਅਭੂਤੰ ਭਯਾਣੰ ॥
mache beer beeran abhootan bhayaanan |
ਬਜੀ ਭੇਰ ਭੁੰਕਾਰ ਧੁੱਕੇ ਨਿਸਾਣੰ ॥
bajee bher bhunkaar dhuke nisaanan |
The warriors fighting with warriors are looking wonderfully frightening. The clattering sound of kettledrums is heard and there is also the thunder of trumpets.
ਨਵੰ ਨੱਦ ਨੀਸਾਣ ਗੱਜੇ ਗਹੀਰੰ ॥
navan nad neesaan gaje gaheeran |
ਫਿਰੈ ਰੁੰਡ ਮੁੰਡੰ ਤਨੰ ਤੱਛ ਤੀਰੰ ॥੩੯॥
firai rundd munddan tanan tachh teeran |39|
The serious tone of the new trumpets resounds. Somewhere the trunks, somewhere the heads, somewhere the bodies hewed by arrows are seen moving.39.
ਬਹੇ ਖੱਗ ਖੇਤੰ ਖਿਆਲੰ ਖਤੰਗੰ ॥
bahe khag khetan khiaalan khatangan |
ਰੁਲੇ ਤੱਛ ਮੁੱਛੰ ਮਹਾ ਜੋਧ ਜੰਗੰ ॥
rule tachh muchhan mahaa jodh jangan |
The warriors strike their swords and care for their arrows in the battlefield. The great heroes, chopped in the war are rolling in dust.
ਬੰਧੇ ਬੀਰ ਬਾਨਾ ਬਡੇ ਐਠਿ ਵਾਰੇ ॥
bandhe beer baanaa badde aitth vaare |
ਘੁਮੈ ਲੋਹ ਘੁੱਟੰ ਮਨੋ ਮਤਵਾਰੇ ॥੪੦॥
ghumai loh ghuttan mano matavaare |40|
The greatly proud warriors, having tied their quivers and equipped with armour move in the battlefield like the drunkards.40.
ਉਠੀ ਕੂਹ ਜੂਹੰ ਸਮਰ ਸਾਰ ਬੱਜਿਯੰ ॥
autthee kooh joohan samar saar bajiyan |
ਕਿਧੋ ਅੰਤ ਕੇ ਕਾਲ ਕੋ ਮੇਘ ਗੱਜਿਯੰ ॥
kidho ant ke kaal ko megh gajiyan |
The weapons were struck and there was confusion all around, it seemed that the clouds of doomsday were thundering.
ਭਈ ਤੀਰ ਭੀਰੰ ਕਮਾਣੰ ਕੱੜਕਿਯੰ ॥
bhee teer bheeran kamaanan karrakiyan |
ਬਜੇ ਲੋਹ ਕ੍ਰੋਹੰ ਮਹਾਂ ਜੰਗ ਮੱਚਿਯੰ ॥੪੧॥
baje loh krohan mahaan jang machiyan |41|
Hearing the cracking sound bows, the warriors of great endurance are becoming cowards. The steel clatters in rage with steel nad the great war is in progress.41.
ਬਿਰੱਚੇ ਮਹਾਂ ਜੰਗ ਜੋਧਾ ਜੁਆਣੰ ॥
birache mahaan jang jodhaa juaanan |
ਖੁਲੇ ਖੱਗ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਅਭੂਤੰ ਭਯਾਣੰ ॥
khule khag khatree abhootan bhayaanan |
The youthful warriors are moving in this great war, with naked swords the fighters look wonderfully terrible.
ਬਲੀ ਜੁੱਝ ਰੁੱਝੈ ਰਸੰ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਰੱਤੇ ॥
balee jujh rujhai rasan rudr rate |
ਮਿਲੇ ਹੱਥ ਬੱਖੰ ਮਹਾ ਤੇਜ ਤੱਤੇ ॥੪੨॥
mile hath bakhan mahaa tej tate |42|
Adsorbed in violent rage, the brave warriors are engaged in war. The heroes with utmost enthusiasm are catching hold the waists of opponents in order to throw them down.42.
ਝਮੀ ਤੇਜ ਤੇਗੰ ਸੁ ਰੋਸੰ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੰ ॥
jhamee tej tegan su rosan prahaaran |
ਰੁਲੇ ਰੁੰਡ ਮੁੰਡੰ ਉਠੀ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਝਾਰੰ ॥
rule rundd munddan utthee sasatr jhaaran |
The sharp swords glisten and are struck with great rage. Somewhere the trunks and heads are rolling in dust and with the collision of weapons, the fire-sparks arise.
ਬਬਕੰਤ ਬੀਰੰ ਭਭਕੰਤ ਘਾਯੰ ॥
babakant beeran bhabhakant ghaayan |
ਮਨੋ ਜੁੱਧ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੰ ਜੁਟਿਓ ਬ੍ਰਿਤਰਾਯੰ ॥੪੩॥
mano judh indran juttio britaraayan |43|
Somewhere the warriors are shouting and somewhere the blood is emerging out of the wounds. It appears that Indira and Britrasura are engaged in war 43.
ਮਹਾਂ ਜੁੱਧ ਮੱਚਿਯੰ ਮਹਾਂ ਸੂਰ ਗਾਜੇ ॥
mahaan judh machiyan mahaan soor gaaje |
ਅਪੋ ਆਪ ਮੈਂ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੋਂ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਾਜੇ ॥
apo aap main sasatr son sasatr baaje |
The terrible war is in progress in which the great heroes are thundering. The weapons collide with the confronting weapons.
ਉਠੇ ਝਾਰ ਸਾਂਗੰ ਮਚੇ ਲੋਹ ਕ੍ਰੋਹੰ ॥
autthe jhaar saangan mache loh krohan |
ਮਨੋ ਖੇਲ ਬਾਸੰਤ ਮਾਹੰਤ ਸੋਹੰ ॥੪੪॥
mano khel baasant maahant sohan |44|
The sparks of fire came out of the striking spears and in violent rage, the steel reigns supreme; it seems that good persons, looking impressive, are playing Holi.44.

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਾਈਆ ਕਟਿਅੜਾ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥
sant janaa mil bhaaeea kattiarraa jamakaal |
Meeting with the humble beings, O Siblings of Destiny, the Messenger of Death is conquered.
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵੁਠਾ ਹੋਆ ਖਸਮੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥
sachaa saahib man vutthaa hoaa khasam deaal |
The True Lord and Master has come to dwell within my mind; my Lord and Master has become Merciful.
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਬਿਨਸਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥੧॥
pooraa satigur bhettiaa binasiaa sabh janjaal |1|
Meeting with the Perfect True Guru, all my worldly entanglements have ended. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾ ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥
mere satiguraa hau tudh vittahu kurabaan |
O my True Guru, I am a sacrifice to You.
ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਤੁਸਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tere darasan kau balihaaranai tus ditaa amrit naam |1| rahaau |
I am a sacrifice to the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. By the Pleasure of Your Will, You have blessed me with the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨ ਤੂੰ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਸੇਈ ਪੁਰਖ ਸੁਜਾਨ ॥
jin toon seviaa bhaau kar seee purakh sujaan |
Those who have served You with love are truly wise.
ਤਿਨਾ ਪਿਛੈ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥
tinaa pichhai chhutteeai jin andar naam nidhaan |
Those who have the Treasure of the Naam within emancipate others as well as themselves.
ਗੁਰ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਆਤਮ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
gur jevadd daataa ko nahee jin ditaa aatam daan |2|
There is no other Giver as great as the Guru, who has given the gift of the soul. ||2||
ਆਏ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
aae se paravaan heh jin gur miliaa subhaae |
Blessed and acclaimed is the coming of those who have met the Guru with loving faith.
ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
sache setee ratiaa daragah baisan jaae |
Attuned to the True One, you shall obtain a place of honor in the Court of the Lord.
ਕਰਤੇ ਹਥਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥
karate hath vaddiaaeea poorab likhiaa paae |3|
Greatness is in the Hands of the Creator; it is obtained by pre-ordained destiny. ||3||
ਸਚੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੁ ਟੇਕ ॥
sach karataa sach karanahaar sach saahib sach ttek |
True is the Creator, True is the Doer. True is our Lord and Master, and True is His Support.
ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਸਚੋ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥
sacho sach vakhaaneeai sacho budh bibek |
So speak the Truest of the True. Through the True One, an intuitive and discerning mind is obtained.
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵੈ ਏਕ ॥੪॥੨੮॥੯੮॥
sarab nirantar rav rahiaa jap naanak jeevai ek |4|28|98|
Nanak lives by chanting and meditating on the One, who is pervading within and contained amongst all. ||4||28||98||

ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰੁ ਪੂਜੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਲਾਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
gur paramesur poojeeai man tan laae piaar |
Worship the Guru, the Transcendent Lord, with your mind and body attuned to love.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਸਭਸੈ ਦੇਇ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
satigur daataa jeea kaa sabhasai dee adhaar |
The True Guru is the Giver of the soul; He gives Support to all.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਸਚਾ ਏਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
satigur bachan kamaavane sachaa ehu veechaar |
Act according to the Instructions of the True Guru; this is the true philosophy.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਰਤਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
bin saadhoo sangat ratiaa maaeaa mohu sabh chhaar |1|
Without being attuned to the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, all attachment to Maya is just dust. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
mere saajan har har naam samaal |
O my friend, reflect upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har
ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saadhoo sangat man vasai pooran hovai ghaal |1| rahaau |
. In the Saadh Sangat, He dwells within the mind, and one's works are brought to perfect fruition. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur samarath apaar gur vaddabhaagee darasan hoe |
The Guru is All-powerful, the Guru is Infinite. By great good fortune, the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is obtained.
ਗੁਰੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਗੁਰ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
gur agochar niramalaa gur jevadd avar na koe |
The Guru is Imperceptible, Immaculate and Pure. There is no other as great as the Guru.
ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
gur karataa gur karanahaar guramukh sachee soe |
The Guru is the Creator, the Guru is the Doer. The Gurmukh obtains true glory.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਲੋੜੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
gur te baahar kichh nahee gur keetaa lorre su hoe |2|
Nothing is beyond the Guru; whatever He wishes comes to pass. ||2||
ਗੁਰੁ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਨਸਾ ਪੂਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
gur teerath gur paarajaat gur manasaa pooranahaar |
The Guru is the Sacred Shrine of Pilgrimage, the Guru is the Wish-fulfilling Elysian Tree.
ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਉਧਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
gur daataa har naam dee udharai sabh sansaar |
The Guru is the Fulfiller of the desires of the mind. The Guru is the Giver of the Name of the Lord, by which all the world is saved.
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਊਚਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
gur samarath gur nirankaar gur aoochaa agam apaar |
The Guru is All-powerful, the Guru is Formless; the Guru is Lofty, Inaccessible and Infinite.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਅਗਮ ਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਕਥੇ ਕਥਨਹਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
gur kee mahimaa agam hai kiaa kathe kathanahaar |3|
The Praise of the Guru is so sublime-what can any speaker say? ||3||
ਜਿਤੜੇ ਫਲ ਮਨਿ ਬਾਛੀਅਹਿ ਤਿਤੜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
jitarre fal man baachheeeh titarre satigur paas |
All the rewards which the mind desires are with the True Guru.
ਪੂਰਬ ਲਿਖੇ ਪਾਵਣੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
poorab likhe paavane saach naam de raas |
One whose destiny is so pre-ordained, obtains the Wealth of the True Name.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣੀ ਆਇਆਂ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥
satigur saranee aaeaan baahurr nahee binaas |
Entering the Sanctuary of the True Guru, you shall never die again.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਸਰਉ ਏਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਾਸੁ ॥੪॥੨੯॥੯੯॥
har naanak kade na visrau ehu jeeo pindd teraa saas |4|29|99|
Nanak: may I never forget You, Lord. This soul, body and breath are Yours. ||4||29||99||

O Saints, O Siblings of Destiny, listen: release comes only through the True Name.
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਸਰੇਵਣੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
gur ke charan sarevane teerath har kaa naau |
Worship the Feet of the Guru. Let the Name of the Lord be your sacred shrine of pilgrimage.
ਆਗੈ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਮੰਨੀਅਹਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਿਥਾਵੇ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥
aagai darageh maneeeh milai nithaave thaau |1|
Hereafter, you shall be honored in the Court of the Lord; there, even the homeless find a home. ||1||
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵ ॥
bhaaee re saachee satigur sev |
O Siblings of Destiny, service to the True Guru alone is True.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੂਰਨ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satigur tutthai paaeeai pooran alakh abhev |1| rahaau |
When the True Guru is pleased, we obtain the Perfect, Unseen, Unknowable Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥
satigur vittahu vaariaa jin ditaa sach naau |
I am a sacrifice to the True Guru, who has bestowed the True Name.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਣਾ ਸਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥
anadin sach salaahanaa sache ke gun gaau |
Night and day, I praise the True One; I sing the Glorious Praises of the True One.
ਸਚੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਸਚੁ ਪੈਨਣਾ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥
sach khaanaa sach painanaa sache sachaa naau |2|
True is the food, and true are the clothes, of those who chant the True Name of the True One. ||2||
ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਸਫਲੁ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਪਿ ॥
saas giraas na visarai safal moorat gur aap |
With each breath and morsel of food, do not forget the Guru, the Embodiment of Fulfillment.
ਗੁਰ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦਿਸਈ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਪਿ ॥
gur jevadd avar na disee aatth pehar tis jaap |
None is seen to be as great as the Guru. Meditate on Him twenty-four hours a day.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
nadar kare taa paaeeai sach naam gunataas |3|
As He casts His Glance of Grace, we obtain the True Name, the Treasure of Excellence. ||3||
ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
gur paramesar ek hai sabh meh rahiaa samaae |
The Guru and the Transcendent Lord are one and the same, pervading and permeating amongst all.
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥
jin kau poorab likhiaa seee naam dhiaae |
Those who have such pre-ordained destiny, meditate on the Naam.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੩੦॥੧੦੦॥
naanak gur saranaagatee marai na aavai jaae |4|30|100|
Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Guru, who does not die, or come and go in reincarnation. ||4||30||100||
