ਗਾਲ ਬਜਾਇ ਭਲੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੋ ਅਰੁ ਤਾਲ ਸਭੋ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਾਥਨ ਦੀਨੋ ॥
gaal bajaae bhalee bidh so ar taal sabho sang haathan deeno |
He, appreciating himself, clapped with all his hands
ਜੈਸੇ ਲਿਖੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਬੇਦ ਬਿਖੈ ਤਿਹ ਭੂਪ ਤਿਹੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੋ ਤਪੁ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
jaise likhee bidh bed bikhai tih bhoop tihee bidh so tap keeno |
The king performed austerities according to Vedic injunctions,
ਜਗਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਪੂਰਬ ਕਉਨ ਬਿਧਾਨ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਹੀਨੋ ॥
jag kare sabh hee bidh poorab kaun bidhaan binaa nahee heeno |
And held a Yajna in accordance with the Vedic rites
ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਰਿਝਾਇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੁ ਹੋ ਕੁਟਵਾਰ ਇਹੀ ਬਰੁ ਲੀਨੋ ॥੨੧੮੫॥
rudr rijhaae kahiyo ih bhaat su ho kuttavaar ihee bar leeno |2185|
After pleasing Rudra, he received the boon of protective power.2185.
ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਜਬੈ ਕੁਟਵਾਰ ਕਯੋ ਤਬ ਦੇਸਨਿ ਦੇਸਨ ਧਰਮ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥
rudr jabai kuttavaar kayo tab desan desan dharam chalaayo |
When Rudra bestowed the boon, the king established the religion in various countries
ਪਾਪ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਗਈ ਛਪ ਕੈ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਜਗ ਮੈ ਜਸੁ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਛਾਯੋ ॥
paap kee baat gee chhap kai sabh hee jag mai jas bhoopat chhaayo |
There was to sin left and the king was praised throughout the world
ਸਤ੍ਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਸੂਲ ਕੈ ਬਸਿ ਭਏ ਅਰਿ ਅਉਰ ਕਿਹੂੰ ਨਹਿ ਸੀਸ ਉਠਾਯੋ ॥
satr trisool kai bas bhe ar aaur kihoon neh sees utthaayo |
All the enemies came under the control of the trident of the king and no one raised his head out of fear
ਲੋਗਨ ਤਉਨ ਸਮੈ ਜਗ ਮੈ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੨੧੮੬॥
logan taun samai jag mai kab sayaam bhanai at hee sukh paayo |2186|
The poet says that the people were extremely happy during his reign.2186.
ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਭਏ ਅਰਿ ਬਸਿ ਕਿਹੂੰ ਅਰਿ ਆਨ ਨ ਸੀਸ ਉਠਾਯੋ ॥

With the grace of Rudra, all the enemies came under his control and no one raised his head
ਕਰਿ ਲੈ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਪਾਇਨ ਊਪਰ ਸੀਸ ਝੁਕਾਯੋ ॥
kar lai kab sayaam bhanai at hee ih paaein aoopar sees jhukaayo |
All of them paid the tax and bowed at his feet
ਭੂਪ ਨ ਰੰਚਕ ਬਾਤ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਪਉਰਖ ਮੇਰੋ ਈ ਹੈ ਲਖਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
bhoop na ranchak baat lee ih paurakh mero ee hai lakh paayo |
Without understanding the mystery of the grace of Rudra, the king thought that this was due to his power only
ਪਉਰਖ ਭਯੋ ਭੁਜਦੰਡਨ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਜੁਧ ਹੀ ਕੋ ਬਰੁ ਮਾਗਨ ਧਾਯੋ ॥੨੧੮੭॥
paurakh bhayo bhujadanddan rudr te judh hee ko bar maagan dhaayo |2187|
Thinking about the strength of his arms, he went to Shiva for the grant of the boon of the victory in war.2187.

ਮੂਰਖ ਲਹਿਯੋ ਨ ਭੇਦੁ ਜੁਧੁ ਚਹਨਿ ਸਿਵ ਪੈ ਚਲਿਯੋ ॥
moorakh lahiyo na bhed judh chehan siv pai chaliyo |
ਕਰਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਭ ਖੇਦਿ ਜਿਵ ਰਵਿ ਤਪ ਬਾਰੂ ਤਪੈ ॥੨੧੮੮॥
kar birathaa sabh khed jiv rav tap baaroo tapai |2188|
Like the blazing sand heated by the sun, that foolish king, without understanding the mystery of his grace, went to Shiva for the grant of the boon of victory in war.2188.

ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਇ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਢਾਇ ਕੈ ਯੌ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਸੋ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ॥
sees nivaae kai prem badtaae kai yau nrip rudr so bain sunaavai |
ਜਾਤ ਹੋ ਹਉ ਜਿਹ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੈ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਜੂ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਆਗੇ ਤੇ ਹਾਥ ਉਠਾਵੈ ॥
jaat ho hau jih satr pai rudr joo koaoo na aage te haath utthaavai |
Bowing down his head, the king said to Rudra (Shiva) with affection, “Wherever I go, no one raises his hand against me
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਕਉ ਹਮਰੋ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਮਨੂਆ ਲਲਚਾਵੈ ॥
taa te ayodhan kau hamaro kab sayaam kahai manooaa lalachaavai |
ਚਾਹਤ ਹੋ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਬਰੁ ਆਜ ਕੋਊ ਹਮਰੇ ਸੰਗ ਜੂਝ ਮਚਾਵੈ ॥੨੧੮੯॥
chaahat ho tum te bar aaj koaoo hamare sang joojh machaavai |2189|
My mind is eager to wage a war and I request you to bestow on me the boon that someone may come to fight with me.”2189.

ਯੌ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੇ ਸਿਵ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥
yau sun ke siv krodh badtaayo |
ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
yau keh kai tih bachan sunaayo |
ਜਬੈ ਧੁਜਾ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਗਿਰ ਪਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
jabai dhujaa tumaree gir par hai |
ਤਬੈ ਸੂਰ ਕੋਊ ਤੁਮ ਸੰਗ ਲਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੨੧੯੦॥
tabai soor koaoo tum sang lar hai |2190|
Hearing this, Shiva got enraged and said, “When your banner will fall down, then someone will come to fight with you.”2190.

ਖੇਤਿ ਮਿਆਲਾ ਉਚੀਆ ਘਰੁ ਉਚਾ ਨਿਰਣਉ ॥
khet miaalaa ucheea ghar uchaa nirnau |
Raising the embankments of the mind's field, I gaze at the heavenly mansion.
ਮਹਲ ਭਗਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਸਰੈ ਸਜਣ ਪਾਹੁਣਿਅਉ ॥
mehal bhagatee ghar sarai sajan paahuniaau |
When devotion comes to the mind of the soul-bride, she is visited by the friendly guest.
ਬਰਸਨਾ ਤ ਬਰਸੁ ਘਨਾ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਬਰਸਹਿ ਕਾਹਿ ॥
barasanaa ta baras ghanaa bahurr baraseh kaeh |
O clouds, if you are going to rain, then go ahead and rain; why rain after the season has passed?
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨੑ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਜਿਨੑ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
naanak tina balihaaranai jina guramukh paaeaa man maeh |1|
Nanak is a sacrifice to those Gurmukhs who obtain the Lord in their minds. ||1||

Third Mehl:
ਮਿਠਾ ਸੋ ਜੋ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਸਜਣੁ ਸੋ ਜਿ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
mitthaa so jo bhaavadaa sajan so ji raas |
That which is pleasing is sweet, and one who is sincere is a friend.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
naanak guramukh jaaneeai jaa kau aap kare paragaas |2|
O Nanak, he is known as a Gurmukh, whom the Lord Himself enlightens. ||2||

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਤੂ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਂਈ ॥
prabh paas jan kee aradaas too sachaa saanee |
O God, Your humble servant offers his prayer to You; You are my True Master.
ਤੂ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
too rakhavaalaa sadaa sadaa hau tudh dhiaaee |
You are my Protector, forever and ever; I meditate on You.
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
jeea jant sabh teriaa too rahiaa samaaee |
All the beings and creatures are Yours; You are pervading and permeating in them.
ਜੋ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਪਚਾਈ ॥
jo daas tere kee nindaa kare tis maar pachaaee |
One who slanders Your slave is crushed and destroyed.
ਚਿੰਤਾ ਛਡਿ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਰਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਗਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੨੧॥
chintaa chhadd achint rahu naanak lag paaee |21|
Falling at Your Feet, Nanak has renounced his cares, and has become care-free. ||21||

ਆਸਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਗੁ ਮੁਆ ਆਸਾ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
aasaa karataa jag muaa aasaa marai na jaae |
Building up its hopes, the world dies, but its hopes do not die or depart.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਸਾ ਪੂਰੀਆ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak aasaa pooreea sache siau chit laae |1|
O Nanak, hopes are fulfilled only by attaching one's consciousness to the True Lord. ||1||

Third Mehl:
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੋ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
aasaa manasaa mar jaaeisee jin keetee so lai jaae |
Hopes and desires shall die only when He, who created them, takes them away.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak nihachal ko nahee baajhahu har kai naae |2|
O Nanak, nothing is permanent, except the Name of the Lord. ||2||

ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਓਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਥਾਟੁ ॥

He Himself created the world, with His perfect workmanship.
ਆਪੇ ਸਾਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਾਟੁ ॥
aape saahu aape vanajaaraa aape hee har haatt |
He Himself is the true banker, He Himself is the merchant, and He Himself is the store.
ਆਪੇ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖੇਵਾਟੁ ॥
aape saagar aape bohithaa aape hee khevaatt |
He Himself is the ocean, He Himself is the boat, and He Himself is the boatman.
ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਚੇਲਾ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਦਸੇ ਘਾਟੁ ॥
aape gur chelaa hai aape aape dase ghaatt |
He Himself is the Guru, He Himself is the disciple, and He Himself shows the destination.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਤੂ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਾਟੁ ॥੨੨॥੧॥ ਸੁਧੁ

O servant Nanak, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and all your sins shall be eradicated. ||22||1||Sudh||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਰਾਧਣਾ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਉ ॥
antar gur aaraadhanaa jihavaa jap gur naau |
Deep within yourself, worship the Guru in adoration, and with your tongue, chant the Guru's Name.
ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੇਖਣਾ ਸ੍ਰਵਣੀ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਉ ॥
netree satigur pekhanaa sravanee sunanaa gur naau |
Let your eyes behold the True Guru, and let your ears hear the Guru's Name.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਠਾਉ ॥
satigur setee ratiaa daragah paaeeai tthaau |
Attuned to the True Guru, you shall receive a place of honor in the Court of the Lord.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਏਹ ਵਥੁ ਦੇਇ ॥
kahu naanak kirapaa kare jis no eeh vath dee |
Says Nanak, this treasure is bestowed on those who are blessed with His Mercy.
ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਉਤਮ ਕਾਢੀਅਹਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਕੇਈ ਕੇਇ ॥੧॥
jag meh utam kaadteeeh virale keee kee |1|
In the midst of the world, they are known as the most pious - they are rare indeed. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਰਖੇ ਰਖਣਹਾਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਉਬਾਰਿਅਨੁ ॥
rakhe rakhanahaar aap ubaarian |
O Savior Lord, save us and take us across.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਇ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰਿਅਨੁ ॥
gur kee pairee paae kaaj savaarian |
Falling at the feet of the Guru, our works are embellished with perfection.
ਹੋਆ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਅਨੁ ॥
hoaa aap deaal manahu na visaarian |
You have become kind, merciful and compassionate; we do not forget You from our minds.
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਾਰਿਅਨੁ ॥
saadh janaa kai sang bhavajal taarian |
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, we are carried across the terrifying world-ocean.
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਦੁਸਟ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਅਨੁ ॥
saakat nindak dusatt khin maeh bidaarian |
In an instant, You have destroyed the faithless cynics and slanderous enemies.
ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
tis saahib kee ttek naanak manai maeh |
That Lord and Master is my Anchor and Support; O Nanak, hold firm in your mind.
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
jis simarat sukh hoe sagale dookh jaeh |2|
Remembering Him in meditation, happiness comes, and all sorrows and pains simply vanish. ||2||
