ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਕੋ ਦਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
jaraasandh ko dal har maariyo |
ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਸਬ ਗਰਬ ਉਤਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
bhoopat ko sab garab utaariyo |
The army of Jarasandh was knocked down by Krishna and in this way pulverized the pride of the king
ਅਬਿ ਕਹੈ ਕਉਨ ਉਪਾਵਹਿ ਕਰੋ ॥
ab kahai kaun upaaveh karo |
ਰਨ ਮੈ ਆਜ ਜੂਝ ਹੀ ਮਰੋ ॥੧੮੪੦॥
ran mai aaj joojh hee maro |1840|
The king thought that then what step should he taken, and how should he die in the war on that day?1840.
ਇਉ ਚਿਤਿ ਚਿੰਤ ਧਨੁਖ ਕਰਿ ਗਹਿਯੋ ॥
eiau chit chint dhanukh kar gahiyo |
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੂਝ ਪੁਨਿ ਚਹਿਯੋ ॥
prabh kai sang joojh pun chahiyo |
Thinking thus, he caught hold of his bow in his hand and also thought of fighting with Krishna again
ਪਹਰਿਯੋ ਕਵਚ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
pahariyo kavach saamuhe dhaayo |
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਪ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥੧੮੪੧॥
sayaam bhanai man kop badtaayo |1841|
He wore his armour and came in front of Krishna.1841.

ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਰਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਮੈ ਬਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ਚਢਾਇ ॥

Jarasandh then taking up his bow and arrows and wearing his crown, said thus to Krishna,1842

ਜੋ ਬਲ ਹੈ ਤੁਮ ਮੈ ਨੰਦ ਨੰਦਨ ਸੋ ਅਬ ਪਉਰਖ ਮੋਹਿ ਦਿਖਈਯੈ ॥
jo bal hai tum mai nand nandan so ab paurakh mohi dikheeyai |
“O Krishna! if you have any power and strength, then show it to me
ਠਾਢੋ ਕਹਾ ਮੁਹਿ ਓਰ ਨਿਹਾਰਤ ਮਾਰਤ ਹੋ ਸਰ ਭਾਜਿ ਨ ਜਈਯੈ ॥
tthaadto kahaa muhi or nihaarat maarat ho sar bhaaj na jeeyai |
What are you looking at towards me, standing there? I am going to hit you with my arrow, do not run away anywhere
ਕੈ ਅਬ ਡਾਰਿ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਗਵਾਰ ਸੰਭਾਰ ਕੈ ਮੋ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੂਝ ਮਚਈਯੈ ॥
kai ab ddaar hathiaar gavaar sanbhaar kai mo sang joojh macheeyai |
“O foolish Yadava! surrender yourself otherwise fight with me with great caution
ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਤਜੈ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਬਨ ਮੈ ਸੁਖ ਸੋ ਬਛ ਗਾਇ ਚਰਈਯੈ ॥੧੮੪੩॥
kaahe kau praan tajai ran mai ban mai sukh so bachh gaae chareeyai |1843|
Why do you want to end your life in the war? Go and graze your cows and calves peacefully in the forest.”1843.
ਬ੍ਰਿਜਰਾਜ ਮਨੈ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਉਹ ਭੂਪ ਕੇ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨੇ ਜਬ ਐਸੇ ॥
brijaraaj manai kab sayaam bhanai uh bhoop ke bain sune jab aise |
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਉਰ ਮੈ ਰਿਸ ਯੌ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਪਰਸੇ ਘ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਾਵਕ ਤੈਸੇ ॥
sree har ke ur mai ris yau pragattee parase ghrit paavak taise |
When Krishna heard these words of the king, the anger erupted in his mind like the fire flaming up on putting ghee in it,
ਜਿਉ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਰਾਜ ਸ੍ਰਿਗਾਵਲ ਕੀ ਕੂਕ ਸੁਨੇ ਬਨਿ ਹੂਕ ਉਠੇ ਮਨ ਵੈਸੇ ॥
jiau mrigaraaj srigaaval kee kook sune ban hook utthe man vaise |
ਯੌ ਅਟਕੀ ਅਰਿ ਕੀ ਬਤੀਯਾ ਖਟਕੈ ਪਗ ਮੈ ਅਟਿ ਕੰਟਕ ਜੈਸੇ ॥੧੮੪੪॥
yau attakee ar kee bateeyaa khattakai pag mai att kanttak jaise |1844|
“O like the lion gets infuriated on hearing the howls of jackals, or like the mind getting angry on thorns being struck into the clothes.1844.
ਕ੍ਰੁਧਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਰਾਜ ਇਤੈ ਸੁ ਘਨੇ ਲਖਿ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਬਾਨ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
krudhat hvai brijaraaj itai su ghane lakh kai tih baan chalaae |
On this side, Krishna getting infuriated, discharged many arrows
ਕੋਪਿ ਉਤੇ ਧਨੁ ਲੇਤ ਭਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਦੋਊ ਨੈਨ ਤਚਾਏ ॥
kop ute dhan let bhayo nrip sayaam bhanai doaoo nain tachaae |
On that side the king in anger, with reddened eyes, took up his bow in his hand
ਜੋ ਸਰ ਆਵਤ ਭਯੋ ਹਰਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਸੋ ਛਿਨ ਮੈ ਸਬ ਕਾਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਏ ॥
jo sar aavat bhayo har aoopar so chhin mai sab kaatt giraae |
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸਰ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਕਉ ਤਨਕੋ ਨਹਿ ਭੇਟਨ ਪਾਏ ॥੧੮੪੫॥
sree har ke sar bhoopat ke tan kau tanako neh bhettan paae |1845|
The arrows which were coming towards Krishna were intercepted by him and the arrows of Krishna are not even touching the kng.1845.
ਇਤ ਸੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਜੂਝਿ ਕਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਉਤ ਤੇ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਇਕ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
eit so nrip joojh karai har siau ut te musalee ik bain sunaayo |
ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਦਏ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਭਟ ਤੈ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਨਹੀ ਨੈਕੁ ਲਜਾਯੋ ॥
maar bidaar de tumare bhatt tai man mai nahee naik lajaayo |
On this side the king is fighting with Krishna and on that side Balram said to the king, “We have killed your warriors, but still you do not feel ashamed
ਰੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਜੂਝ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਾਹੋ ਘਰੈ ਲਰਿ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
re nrip kaahe kau joojh marai fir jaaho gharai lar kaa fal paayo |
“O king! go back to your home, what will you gain by fighting? O king! you are like deer and
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬੜੋ ਜਢ ਹੈ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਰਨ ਜੀਤਨਿ ਆਯੋ ॥੧੮੪੬॥
taa te barro jadt hai mrig bhoopat kehar so ran jeetan aayo |1846|
Are only dreaming about your victory over the lion.1846.

Why bother to read the Simritees to a dog?
ਕਹਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਪਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥
kahaa saakat peh har gun gaae |1|
Why bother to sing the Lord's Praises to the faithless cynic? ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਮੇ ਰਮਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥
raam raam raam rame ram raheeai |
Remain absorbed in the Lord's Name, Raam, Raam, Raam.
ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਭੂਲਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saakat siau bhool nahee kaheeai |1| rahaau |
Do not bother to speak of it to the faithless cynic, even by mistake. ||1||Pause||
ਕਊਆ ਕਹਾ ਕਪੂਰ ਚਰਾਏ ॥
kaooaa kahaa kapoor charaae |
Why offer camphor to a crow?
ਕਹ ਬਿਸੀਅਰ ਕਉ ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਆਏ ॥੨॥
keh biseear kau doodh peeae |2|
Why give the snake milk to drink? ||2||
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
satasangat mil bibek budh hoee |
Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, discriminating understanding is attained.
ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
paaras paras lohaa kanchan soee |3|
That iron which touches the Philosopher's Stone becomes gold. ||3||
ਸਾਕਤੁ ਸੁਆਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥
saakat suaan sabh kare karaaeaa |
The dog, the faithless cynic, does everything as the Lord causes him to do.
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
jo dhur likhiaa su karam kamaaeaa |4|
He does the deeds pre-ordained from the very beginning. ||4||
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਨੀਮੁ ਸਿੰਚਾਈ ॥
amrit lai lai neem sinchaaee |
If you take Ambrosial Nectar and irrigate the neem tree with it,
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਉਆ ਕੋ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥੭॥੨੦॥
kehat kabeer uaa ko sehaj na jaaee |5|7|20|
still, says Kabeer, its natural qualities are not changed. ||5||7||20||

ਲੰਕਾ ਸਾ ਕੋਟੁ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਸੀ ਖਾਈ ॥
lankaa saa kott samund see khaaee |
A fortress like that of Sri Lanka, with the ocean as a moat around it
ਤਿਹ ਰਾਵਨ ਘਰ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
tih raavan ghar khabar na paaee |1|
- there is no news about that house of Raavan. ||1||
ਕਿਆ ਮਾਗਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ॥
kiaa maagau kichh thir na rahaaee |
What shall I ask for? Nothing is permanent.
ਦੇਖਤ ਨੈਨ ਚਲਿਓ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dekhat nain chalio jag jaaee |1| rahaau |
I see with my eyes that the world is passing away. ||1||Pause||
ਇਕੁ ਲਖੁ ਪੂਤ ਸਵਾ ਲਖੁ ਨਾਤੀ ॥
eik lakh poot savaa lakh naatee |
Thousands of sons and thousands of grandsons
ਤਿਹ ਰਾਵਨ ਘਰ ਦੀਆ ਨ ਬਾਤੀ ॥੨॥
tih raavan ghar deea na baatee |2|
- but in that house of Raavan, the lamps and wicks have gone out. ||2||
ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਤਪਤ ਰਸੋਈ ॥
chand sooraj jaa ke tapat rasoee |
The moon and the sun cooked his food.
ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕਪਰੇ ਧੋਈ ॥੩॥
baisantar jaa ke kapare dhoee |3|
The fire washed his clothes. ||3||
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਬਸਾਈ ॥
guramat raamai naam basaaee |
Under Guru's Instructions, one whose mind is filled with the Lord's Name,
ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥
asathir rahai na katahoon jaaee |4|
becomes permanent, and does not go anywhere. ||4||
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਲੋਈ ॥
kehat kabeer sunahu re loee |
Says Kabeer, listen, people:
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥੮॥੨੧॥
raam naam bin mukat na hoee |5|8|21|
without the Lord's Name, no one is liberated. ||5||8||21||

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪੂਤੁ ਪਿਛੈਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥

First, the son was born, and then, his mother.
ਗੁਰੁ ਲਾਗੋ ਚੇਲੇ ਕੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
gur laago chele kee paaee |1|
The guru falls at the feet of the disciple. ||1||
ਏਕੁ ਅਚੰਭਉ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਤੁਮੑ ਭਾਈ ॥
ek achanbhau sunahu tuma bhaaee |
Listen to this wonderful thing, O Siblings of Destiny!
ਦੇਖਤ ਸਿੰਘੁ ਚਰਾਵਤ ਗਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dekhat singh charaavat gaaee |1| rahaau |
I saw the lion herding the cows. ||1||Pause||
ਜਲ ਕੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਤਰਵਰਿ ਬਿਆਈ ॥
jal kee machhulee taravar biaaee |
The fish of the water gives birth upon a tree.
ਦੇਖਤ ਕੁਤਰਾ ਲੈ ਗਈ ਬਿਲਾਈ ॥੨॥
dekhat kutaraa lai gee bilaaee |2|
I saw a cat carrying away a dog. ||2||
ਤਲੈ ਰੇ ਬੈਸਾ ਊਪਰਿ ਸੂਲਾ ॥
talai re baisaa aoopar soolaa |
The branches are below, and the roots are above.
ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਪੇਡਿ ਲਗੇ ਫਲ ਫੂਲਾ ॥੩॥
tis kai pedd lage fal foolaa |3|
The trunk of that tree bears fruits and flowers. ||3||
ਘੋਰੈ ਚਰਿ ਭੈਸ ਚਰਾਵਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
ghorai char bhais charaavan jaaee |
Riding a horse, the buffalo takes him out to graze.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਬੈਲੁ ਗੋਨਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਈ ॥੪॥
baahar bail gon ghar aaee |4|
The bull is away, while his load has come home. ||4||
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੁ ਇਸ ਪਦ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
kehat kabeer ju is pad boojhai |
Says Kabeer, one who understands this hymn,
ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥੫॥੯॥੨੨॥
raam ramat tis sabh kichh soojhai |5|9|22|
and chants the Lord's Name, comes to understand everything. ||5||9||22||

ਬਿੰਦੁ ਤੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਕੀਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਕੁੰਡ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥
bind te jin pindd keea agan kundd rahaaeaa |
The Lord created the body from sperm, and protected it in the fire pit.
ਦਸ ਮਾਸ ਮਾਤਾ ਉਦਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
das maas maataa udar raakhiaa bahur laagee maaeaa |1|
For ten months He preserved you in your mother's womb, and then, after you were born, you became attached to Maya. ||1||
ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਲੋਭਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਖੋਇਆ ॥
praanee kaahe kau lobh laage ratan janam khoeaa |
O mortal, why have you attached yourself to greed, and lost the jewel of life?
ਪੂਰਬ ਜਨਮਿ ਕਰਮ ਭੂਮਿ ਬੀਜੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਬੋਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
poorab janam karam bhoom beej naahee boeaa |1| rahaau |
You did not plant the seeds of good actions in the earth of your past lives. ||1||Pause||
ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਹੋਨਾ ਸੋ ਹੋਇਆ ॥
baarik te biradh bheaa honaa so hoeaa |
From an infant, you have grown old. That which was to happen, has happened.
ਜਾ ਜਮੁ ਆਇ ਝੋਟ ਪਕਰੈ ਤਬਹਿ ਕਾਹੇ ਰੋਇਆ ॥੨॥
jaa jam aae jhott pakarai tabeh kaahe roeaa |2|
When the Messenger of Death comes and grabs you by your hair, why do you cry out then? ||2||
ਜੀਵਨੈ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਕਰਹਿ ਜਮੁ ਨਿਹਾਰੈ ਸਾਸਾ ॥
jeevanai kee aas kareh jam nihaarai saasaa |
You hope for long life, while Death counts your breaths.
ਬਾਜੀਗਰੀ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਕਬੀਰਾ ਚੇਤਿ ਢਾਲਿ ਪਾਸਾ ॥੩॥੧॥੨੩॥
baajeegaree sansaar kabeeraa chet dtaal paasaa |3|1|23|
The world is a game, O Kabeer, so throw the dice consciously. ||3||1||23||
