ਸੰਕਰਖਣ ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਕਰੀਐ ਕਵਨ ਉਪਾਇ ॥

sankarakhan har so kahiyo kareeai kavan upaae |

ਸੁਮਤਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿ ਦਲ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਲੈ ਰਨ ਮਧਿ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਯੋ ਆਇ ॥੧੭੬੦॥

sumat mantr dal prabal lai ran madh pahunchiyo aae |1760|

Balram said to Krishna, “Some step may be taken, because the minister Sumati has reached with innumerable forces in the battlefield.1760.

ਤਬ ਬੋਲਿਓ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਢੀਲ ਤਜੋ ਬਲਿ ਹਲਿ ਗਹੋ ॥

tab bolio jadubeer dteel tajo bal hal gaho |

Then Krishna said, “Leave your idleness and take up your plough

ਰਹੀਯੋ ਤੁਮ ਮਮ ਤੀਰ ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਜਾਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ॥੧੭੬੧॥

raheeyo tum mam teer aagai paachhai jaahu jin |1761|

Be near me and do not go anywhere.”1761.

SWAYYA

ਰਾਮ ਲੀਯੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਨਿ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਧਸ੍ਰਯੋ ਤਿਨ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਪੁ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥

raam leeyo dhan paan sanbhaar dhasrayo tin mai man kop badtaayo |

Balram held up his bow and arrows and in great fury, jumped into the war-arena

ਬੀਰ ਅਨੇਕ ਹਨੇ ਤਿਹ ਠਉਰ ਘਨੋ ਅਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਤਬ ਜੁਧੁ ਮਚਾਯੋ ॥

beer anek hane tih tthaur ghano ar siau tab judh machaayo |

He killed many warriors and waged a dreadful war with the enemy

ਜੋ ਕੋਊ ਆਇ ਭਿਰਿਯੋ ਬਲਿ ਸਿਉ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਸੋਊ ਘਾਇਨ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਘਾਯੋ ॥

jo koaoo aae bhiriyo bal siau at hee soaoo ghaaein ke sang ghaayo |

Whosoever came to fight with Balram, he was wounded very badly and the warrior who confronted him,

ਮੂਰਛ ਭੂਮਿ ਗਿਰੇ ਭਟ ਝੂਮਿ ਰਹੇ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਧਾਯੋ ॥੧੭੬੨॥

moorachh bhoom gire bhatt jhoom rahe ran mai tih saamuhe dhaayo |1762|

He either fell down unconscious on the ground or hissed while dying.1762.

ਕਾਨ੍ਰਹ ਕਮਾਨ ਲੀਏ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਜਬ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਜਿਉ ਭਭਕਾਰੇ ॥

kaanrah kamaan lee kar mai ran mai jab kehar jiau bhabhakaare |

When Krishna, taking up his bow and arrows, is challenging in the war like a lion,

ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਓ ਭਟ ਐਸੇ ਬਲੀ ਜਗਿ ਧੀਰ ਧਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਰਨ ਪਾਰੇ ॥

ko pragattio bhatt aise balee jag dheer dhare har so ran paare |

Who is then so mighty not to forsake endurance and fight with him?

ਅਉਰ ਸੁ ਕਉਨ ਤਿਹੂੰ ਪੁਰ ਮੈ ਬਲਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਸਿਉ ਬੈਰ ਕੋ ਭਾਉ ਬਿਚਾਰੇ ॥

aaur su kaun tihoon pur mai bal sayaam siau bair ko bhaau bichaare |

Who is there in all the three worlds who can be inimical with Balram and Krishna,

ਜੋ ਹਠ ਕੈ ਕੋਊ ਜੁਧੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੁ ਮਰੈ ਪਲ ਮੈ ਜਮਲੋਕਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ॥੧੭੬੩॥

jo hatth kai koaoo judh karai su marai pal mai jamalok sidhaare |1763|

But still if anyone comes persistently to fight with them, he reaches the abode of Yama in an instant.1763.

ਜਬ ਜੁਧੁ ਕੋ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਜੂ ਰਾਮ ਚਢੇ ਤਬ ਕਉਨ ਬਲੀ ਰਨ ਧੀਰ ਧਰੈ ॥

jab judh ko sayaam joo raam chadte tab kaun balee ran dheer dharai |

Which mighty warrior will observe endurance, seeing Balram and Krishna coming to fight?

ਜੋਊ ਚਉਦਹ ਲੋਕਨ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸੁ ਬਾਲਕ ਜਾਨਿ ਲਰੈ ॥

joaoo chaudah lokan ko pratipaal nripaal su baalak jaan larai |

He, who is the Lord of the fourteen world, the king, considering him a child, is fighting with him

ਜਿਹ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਤੇ ਪਾਪ ਟਰੈ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਰਨ ਭੀਤਰ ਕਉਨ ਹਰੈ ॥

jih naam prataap te paap ttarai tih ko ran bheetar kaun harai |

He, with the glory of whose name, all the sins are destroyed, who can kill him in the war?

ਮਿਲਿ ਆਪਸਿ ਮੈ ਸਬ ਲੋਕ ਕਹੈ ਰਿਪੁ ਸੰਧਿ ਜਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਈ ਮਰੈ ॥੧੭੬੪॥

mil aapas mai sab lok kahai rip sandh jaraa bin aaee marai |1764|

All the people getting together are saying this that the enemy Jarasandh will die without cause.1764.

SORTHA

ਇਤ ਏ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ਸੁਭਟ ਲੋਕ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਟਕ ਮੈ ॥

eit e karat bichaar subhatt lok nrip kattak mai |

On this side in the army of the king, such-like thoughts are arising int eh minds of the warriors and

ਉਤ ਬਲਿ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਧਾਇ ਪਰਿਓ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਡਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੭੬੫॥

aut bal sasatr sanbhaar dhaae pario naahin ddariyo |1765|

On that side Krishna sustaining his power and weapons, fearlessly fell upon the army.1765.

Pauree:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਡੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ॥

satigur vaddaa kar saalaaheeai jis vich vaddeea vaddiaaeea |

Praise the Great True Guru; within Him is the greatest greatness.

ਸਹਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਤਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਈਆ ॥

seh mele taa nadaree aaeea |

When the Lord causes us to meet the Guru, then we come to see them.

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਆ ॥

jaa tis bhaanaa taa man vasaaeea |

When it pleases Him, they come to dwell in our minds.

ਕਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਥੁ ਧਰਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਢੀਆ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ ॥

kar hukam masatak hath dhar vichahu maar kadteea buriaaeea |

By His Command, when He places His hand on our foreheads, wickedness departs from within.

ਸਹਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਆ ॥੧੮॥

seh tutthai nau nidh paaeea |18|

When the Lord is thoroughly pleased, the nine treasures are obtained. ||18||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

salok mahalaa 1 |

Salok, First Mehl:

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸੁਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਚੈ ਬੈਠਾ ਆਇ ॥

pahilaa suchaa aap hoe suchai baitthaa aae |

First, purifying himself, the Brahmin comes and sits in his purified enclosure.

ਸੁਚੇ ਅਗੈ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਭਿਟਿਓ ਜਾਇ ॥

suche agai rakhion koe na bhittio jaae |

The pure foods, which no one else has touched, are placed before him.

ਸੁਚਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਜੇਵਿਆ ਲਗਾ ਪੜਣਿ ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥

suchaa hoe kai jeviaa lagaa parran salok |

Being purified, he takes his food, and begins to read his sacred verses.

ਕੁਹਥੀ ਜਾਈ ਸਟਿਆ ਕਿਸੁ ਏਹੁ ਲਗਾ ਦੋਖੁ ॥

kuhathee jaaee sattiaa kis ehu lagaa dokh |

But it is then thrown into a filthy place - whose fault is this?

ਅੰਨੁ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਲੂਣੁ ॥

an devataa paanee devataa baisantar devataa loon |

The corn is sacred, the water is sacred; the fire and salt are sacred as well;

ਪੰਜਵਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਘਿਰਤੁ ॥ ਤਾ ਹੋਆ ਪਾਕੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ॥

panjavaa paaeaa ghirat | taa hoaa paak pavit |

When the fifth thing, the ghee, is added, then the food becomes pure and sanctified.

ਪਾਪੀ ਸਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਗਡਿਆ ਥੁਕਾ ਪਈਆ ਤਿਤੁ ॥

paapee siau tan gaddiaa thukaa peea tith |

Coming into contact with the sinful human body, the food becomes so impure that is is spat upon.

ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਊਚਰਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਰਸ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

jit mukh naam na aoochareh bin naavai ras khaeh |

That mouth which does not chant the Naam, and without the Name eats tasty foods

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਤਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਥੁਕਾ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

naanak evai jaaneeai tith mukh thukaa paeh |1|

- O Nanak, know this: such a mouth is to be spat upon. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਭੰਡਿ ਜੰਮੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਨਿੰਮੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਮੰਗਣੁ ਵੀਆਹੁ ॥

bhandd jameeai bhandd ninmeeai bhandd mangan veeaahu |

From woman, man is born; within woman, man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married.

ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਭੰਡਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਰਾਹੁ ॥

bhanddahu hovai dosatee bhanddahu chalai raahu |

Woman becomes his friend; through woman, the future generations come.

ਭੰਡੁ ਮੁਆ ਭੰਡੁ ਭਾਲੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਬੰਧਾਨੁ ॥

bhandd muaa bhandd bhaaleeai bhandd hovai bandhaan |

When his woman dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound.

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾਨ ॥

so kiau mandaa aakheeai jit jameh raajaan |

So why call her bad? From her, kings are born.

ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੀ ਭੰਡੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

bhanddahu hee bhandd aoopajai bhanddai baajh na koe |

From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

naanak bhanddai baaharaa eko sachaa soe |

O Nanak, only the True Lord is without a woman.

ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਭਾਗਾ ਰਤੀ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

jit mukh sadaa saalaaheeai bhaagaa ratee chaar |

That mouth which praises the Lord continually is blessed and beautiful.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

naanak te mukh aoojale tith sachai darabaar |2|

O Nanak, those faces shall be radiant in the Court of the True Lord. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੋ ਚੁਣਿ ਕਢੀਐ ॥

sabh ko aakhai aapanaa jis naahee so chun kadteeai |

All call You their own, Lord; one who does not own You, is picked up and thrown away.

ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਲੇਖਾ ਸੰਢੀਐ ॥

keetaa aapo aapanaa aape hee lekhaa sandteeai |

Everyone receives the rewards of his own actions; his account is adjusted accordingly.

ਜਾ ਰਹਣਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਐਤੁ ਜਗਿ ਤਾ ਕਾਇਤੁ ਗਾਰਬਿ ਹੰਢੀਐ ॥

jaa rahanaa naahee ait jag taa kaaeit gaarab handteeai |

Since one is not destined to remain in this world anyway, why should he ruin himself in pride?

ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਆਖੀਐ ਪੜਿ ਅਖਰੁ ਏਹੋ ਬੁਝੀਐ ॥

mandaa kisai na aakheeai parr akhar eho bujheeai |

Do not call anyone bad; read these words, and understand.

ਮੂਰਖੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਲੁਝੀਐ ॥੧੯॥

moorakhai naal na lujheeai |19|

Don't argue with fools. ||19||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

salok mahalaa 1 |

Salok, First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਫਿਕੈ ਬੋਲਿਐ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਫਿਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

naanak fikai boliai tan man fikaa hoe |

O Nanak, speaking insipid words, the body and mind become insipid.

ਫਿਕੋ ਫਿਕਾ ਸਦੀਐ ਫਿਕੇ ਫਿਕੀ ਸੋਇ ॥

fiko fikaa sadeeai fike fikee soe |

He is called the most insipid of the insipid; the most insipid of the insipid is his reputation.

ਫਿਕਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਟੀਐ ਮੁਹਿ ਥੁਕਾ ਫਿਕੇ ਪਾਇ ॥

fikaa daragah satteeai muhi thukaa fike paae |

The insipid person is discarded in the Court of the Lord, and the insipid one's face is spat upon.

ਫਿਕਾ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਪਾਣਾ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

fikaa moorakh aakheeai paanaa lahai sajaae |1|

The insipid one is called a fool; he is beaten with shoes in punishment. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਝੂਠੇ ਪੈਜ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਫੈਲੁ ॥

andarahu jhootthe paij baahar duneea andar fail |

Those who are false within, and honorable on the outside, are very common in this world.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਜੇ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਉਤਰੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈਲੁ ॥

atthasatth teerath je naaveh utarai naahee mail |

Even though they may bathe at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, still, their filth does not depart.

ਜਿਨੑ ਪਟੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਗੁਦੜੁ ਤੇ ਭਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

jina patt andar baahar gudarr te bhale sansaar |

Those who have silk on the inside and rags on the outside, are the good ones in this world.

ਤਿਨੑ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾ ਰਬ ਸੇਤੀ ਦੇਖਨੑੇ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

tina nehu lagaa rab setee dekhanae veechaar |

They embrace love for the Lord, and contemplate beholding Him.

ਰੰਗਿ ਹਸਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਚੁਪ ਭੀ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

rang haseh rang roveh chup bhee kar jaeh |

In the Lord's Love, they laugh, and in the Lord's Love, they weep, and also keep silent.

ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਕੇਰੀ ਬਾਝੁ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਹ ॥

paravaah naahee kisai keree baajh sache naah |

They do not care for anything else, except their True Husband Lord.

ਦਰਿ ਵਾਟ ਉਪਰਿ ਖਰਚੁ ਮੰਗਾ ਜਬੈ ਦੇਇ ਤ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

dar vaatt upar kharach mangaa jabai dee ta khaeh |

Sitting, waiting at the Lord's Door, they beg for food, and when He gives to them, they eat.

ਦੀਬਾਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਕਲਮ ਏਕਾ ਹਮਾ ਤੁਮੑਾ ਮੇਲੁ ॥

deebaan eko kalam ekaa hamaa tumaa mel |

There is only One Court of the Lord, and He has only one pen; there, you and I shall meet.

ਦਰਿ ਲਏ ਲੇਖਾ ਪੀੜਿ ਛੁਟੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਉ ਤੇਲੁ ॥੨॥

dar le lekhaa peerr chhuttai naanakaa jiau tel |2|

In the Court of the Lord, the accounts are examined; O Nanak, the sinners are crushed, like oil seeds in the press. ||2||
