O Lord! Thy Praise is Supreme and Infinite,
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਲਹਿਓ ਨ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਪਾਰਾ ॥
jaa kaa lahio na kinahoon paaraa |
None could comprehend its limits.
ਦੇਵ ਦੇਵ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
dev dev raajan ke raajaa |
O God of gods and King of kings,
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ॥੧॥
deen deaal gareeb nivaajaa |1|
The Merciful Lord of the lowly and protector of the humble.1.

ਮੂਕ ਉਚਰੈ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਖਟ ਪਿੰਗੁ ਗਿਰਨ ਚੜਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

The dumb utters the six Shastras and the crippled climbs the mountain.
ਅੰਧ ਲਖੈ ਬਧਰੋ ਸੁਨੈ ਜੌ ਕਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਾਇ ॥੨॥
andh lakhai badharo sunai jau kaal kripaa karaae |2|
The blind one sees and the deaf listens, if the KAL becomes Gracious.2.

ਕਹਾ ਬੁੱਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁੱਛ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
kahaa budh prabh tuchh hamaaree |
O God! My intellect is trifling.
ਬਰਨ ਸਕੈ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਜੁ ਤਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
baran sakai mahimaa ju tihaaree |
How can it narrate Thy Praise?
ਹਮ ਨ ਸਕਤ ਕਰ ਸਿਫਤ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
ham na sakat kar sifat tumaaree |
I cannot (have sufficient words to) praise Thee,
ਆਪ ਲੇਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਧਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
aap lehu tum kathaa sudhaaree |3|
Thou mayst Thyself improve this narration.3.
ਕਹਾ ਲਗੈ ਇਹ ਕੀਟ ਬਖਾਨੈ ॥
kahaa lagai ih keett bakhaanai |
Upto what limit this insect can depict (Thy Praises)?
ਮਹਿਮਾ ਤੋਰ ਤੁਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
mahimaa tor tuhee prabh jaanai |
Thou mayst Thyself improve Thy Greatness.
ਪਿਤਾ ਜਨਮ ਜਿਮ ਪੂਤ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
pitaa janam jim poot na paavai |
Just as the son cannot say anything about the birth of his father
ਕਹਾ ਤਵਨ ਕਾ ਭੇਦ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
kahaa tavan kaa bhed bataavai |4|
Then how can one unfold Thy mystery.4.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਤੁਮੈ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥
tumaree prabhaa tumai ban aaee |
Thy Greatness is Only Thine
ਅਉਰਨ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤ ਬਤਾਈ ॥
aauran te nahee jaat bataaee |
It cannot be described by others.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੁਮ ਹੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਨੋ ॥
tumaree kripaa tum hoon prabh jaano |
O Lord! Only Thou knowest Thy doings.
ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਕਸ ਸਕਤ ਬਖਾਨੋ ॥੫॥
aooch neech kas sakat bakhaano |5|
Who hast the power to elucidate Thy High of Low acts? 5.
ਸੇਸਨਾਗ ਸਿਰ ਸਹਸ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
sesanaag sir sehas banaaee |
Thou hast made one thousand hoods of Sheshanaga
ਦ੍ਵੈ ਸਹੰਸ ਰਸਨਾਹੁ ਸੁਹਾਈ ॥
dvai sahans rasanaahu suhaaee |
Which contain two thousand tongues.
ਰਟਤ ਅਬ ਲਗੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
rattat ab lage naam apaaraa |
He is reciting till now Thy Infinite Names
ਤੁਮਰੋ ਤਊ ਨ ਪਾਵਤ ਪਾਰਾ ॥੬॥
tumaro taoo na paavat paaraa |6|
Even then he hath not know the end of Thy Names.6.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕਹਾਂ ਕੋਊ ਕਹੈ ॥
tumaree kriaa kahaan koaoo kahai |
What can one say about Thy doings?
ਸਮਝਤ ਬਾਤ ਉਰਝ ਮਤਿ ਰਹੈ ॥
samajhat baat urajh mat rahai |
One gets puzzled while understanding it.
ਸੂਛਮ ਰੂਪ ਨ ਬਰਨਾ ਜਾਈ ॥
soochham roop na baranaa jaaee |
Thy subtle form is indescribable
ਬਿਰਧ ਸਰੂਪਹਿ ਕਹੋ ਬਨਾਈ ॥੭॥
biradh saroopeh kaho banaaee |7|
(Therefore) I speak about Thy Immanent Form.7.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਬ ਗਹਿਹੌ ॥
tumaree prem bhagat jab gahihau |
When I shall observe Thy loving Devotion
ਛੋਰ ਕਥਾ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਤਬ ਕਹਿਹੌ ॥
chhor kathaa sabh hee tab kahihau |
I shall then describe all Thy anecdotes from the beginning.
ਅਬ ਮੈ ਕਹੋ ਸੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਕਥਾ ॥
ab mai kaho su apanee kathaa |
Now I narrate my own life-story
ਸੋਢੀ ਬੰਸ ਉਪਜਿਯਾ ਜਥਾ ॥੮॥
sodtee bans upajiyaa jathaa |8|
How the Sodhi clan came into being (in this world).8.

ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮ ਕਥਾ ਸੰਛੇਪ ਤੇ ਕਹੋ ਸੁ ਹਿਤੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
pritham kathaa sanchhep te kaho su hit chit laae |
With the concentration of my mind, I narrate in brief my earlier story.
ਬਹੁਰ ਬਡੋ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ਕੈ ਕਹਿਹੌ ਸਭੋ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥੯॥
bahur baddo bisathaar kai kahihau sabho sunaae |9|
Then after that, I shall relate all in great detail.9.

ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮ ਕਾਲ ਜਬ ਕਰਾ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
pritham kaal jab karaa pasaaraa |
In the beginning when KAL created the world
ਓਅੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਉਪਾਰਾ ॥
oankaar te srisatt upaaraa |
It was brought into being by Aumkara (the One Lord).
ਕਾਲਸੈਣ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੈ ਭਇਓ ਭੂਪਾ ॥
kaalasain prithamai bheo bhoopaa |
Kal sain was the first king
ਅਧਿਕ ਅਤੁਲ ਬਲਿ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪਾ ॥੧੦॥
adhik atul bal roop anoopaa |10|
Who was of immeasurable strength and supreme beauty.10.
ਕਾਲਕੇਤ ਦੂਸਰ ਭੂਅ ਭਯੋ ॥
kaalaket doosar bhooa bhayo |
Kalket became the second king
ਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਬਰਸ ਤੀਸਰ ਜਗ ਠਯੋ ॥
kraoor baras teesar jag tthayo |
And Kurabaras, the third.
ਕਾਲਧੁਜ ਚਤੁਰਥ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
kaaladhuj chaturath nrip sohai |
Kaldhuj was the fourth kin
ਜਿਹ ਤੇ ਭਇਓ ਜਗਤ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
jih te bheo jagat sabh ko hai |11|
From whon the whole world originated. 11.
ਸਹਸਰਾਛ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸੁਭ ਸੋਹੈਂ ॥
sahasaraachh jaa ke subh sohain |
ਸਹਸ ਪਾਦ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਮੋ ਹੈਂ ॥
sehas paad jaa ke tan mo hain |
He had a thousand eyes and thousand feet.
ਸੇਖਨਾਗ ਪਰ ਸੋਇਬੋ ਕਰੈ ॥
sekhanaag par soeibo karai |
He slept on Sheshanaga
ਜਗ ਤਹਿ ਸੇਖਸਾਇ ਉਚਰੈ ॥੧੨॥
jag teh sekhasaae ucharai |12|
Therefore he was called the master of Shesha.12.
ਏਕ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਤੇ ਮੈਲ ਨਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
ek sravan te mail nikaaraa |
Out of the secretion from one of his ears
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਮਧੁ ਕੀਟਭ ਤਨ ਧਾਰਾ ॥
taa te madh keettabh tan dhaaraa |
Madhu and Kaitabh came into being.
ਦੁਤੀਯ ਕਾਨ ਤੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਿਕਾਰੀ ॥
duteey kaan te mail nikaaree |
And from the secretion of the other ear
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਭਈ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੧੩॥
taa te bhee srisatt ih saaree |13|
The whole world materialized.13.
ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਕਾਲ ਬਹੁਰ ਬਧ ਕਰਾ ॥
tin ko kaal bahur badh karaa |
After some period the Lord killed the demons (Madhu and Kaitabh).
ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਮੇਦ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਮੋ ਪਰਾ ॥
tin ko med samund mo paraa |
Their marrow flowed into the ocean.
ਚਿਕਨ ਤਾਸ ਜਲ ਪਰ ਤਿਰ ਰਹੀ ॥
chikan taas jal par tir rahee |
The greasy substance floated thereon because of that medital (marrow)
ਮੇਧਾ ਨਾਮ ਤਬਹਿ ਤੇ ਕਹੀ ॥੧੪॥
medhaa naam tabeh te kahee |14|
The earth was called medha (or medani).14.
ਸਾਧ ਕਰਮ ਜੇ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
saadh karam je purakh kamaavai |
Because of virtuous actions
ਨਾਮ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਜਗਤ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
naam devataa jagat kahaavai |
A purusha (person) is known as devta (god)
ਕੁਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਰਮ ਜੇ ਜਗ ਮੈ ਕਰਹੀਂ ॥
kukrit karam je jag mai karaheen |
And because of evil actions
ਨਾਮ ਅਸੁਰ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਸਭ ਧਰਹੀਂ ॥੧੫॥
naam asur tin ko sabh dharaheen |15|
He is known as asura (demon).15.
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਥਾਰ ਕਹਾ ਲਗੈ ਬਖਾਨੀਅਤ ॥
bahu bithaar kahaa lagai bakhaaneeat |
If everything is described in detail
ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਬਢਨ ਤੇ ਅਤਿ ਡਰੁ ਮਾਨੀਅਤ ॥
granth badtan te at ddar maaneeat |
It is feared that the description will become voluminous.
ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਹੋਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਆਏ ॥
tin te hot bahut nrip aae |
There were many kings after Kaldhuj
ਦੱਛ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਪਤਿ ਜਿਨ ਉਪਜਾਏ ॥੧੬॥
dachh prajaapat jin upajaae |16|
Like Daksha Prajapati etc. 16.
ਦਸ ਸਹੰਸ੍ਰ ਤਿਹਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਭਈ ਕੰਨਿਆ ॥
das sahansr tihi grih bhee kaniaa |
Ten thousand daughters were born to them
ਜਿਹ ਸਮਾਨ ਕਹ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਅੰਨਿਆ ॥
jih samaan keh lagai na aniaa |
Whose beauty was not matched by others.
ਕਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਐਸੀ ਤਹ ਭਈ ॥
kaal kriaa aisee teh bhee |
In due course all these daughters
ਤੇ ਸਭ ਬਿਆਹਿ ਨਰੇਸਨ ਦਈ ॥੧੭॥
te sabh biaaeh naresan dee |17|
Were married with the kings.17.
ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Siree Raag, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੀਆ ਰਖਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
man tan dhan jin prabh deea rakhiaa sehaj savaar |
This mind, body and wealth were given by God, who naturally adorns us.
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਪਿਆ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
sarab kalaa kar thaapiaa antar jot apaar |
He has blessed us with all our energy, and infused His Infinite Light deep within us.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਿਮਰੀਐ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਖੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
sadaa sadaa prabh simareeai antar rakh ur dhaar |1|
Forever and ever, meditate in remembrance on God; keep Him enshrined in your heart. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
mere man har bin avar na koe |
O my mind, without the Lord, there is no other at all.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
prabh saranaaee sadaa rahu dookh na viaapai koe |1| rahaau |
Remain in God's Sanctuary forever, and no suffering shall afflict you. ||1||Pause||
ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮਾਣਕਾ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਖਾਕੁ ॥
ratan padaarath maanakaa sueinaa rupaa khaak |
Jewels, treasures, pearls, gold and silver-all these are just dust.
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਬੰਧਪਾ ਕੂੜੇ ਸਭੇ ਸਾਕ ॥
maat pitaa sut bandhapaa koorre sabhe saak |
Mother, father, children and relatives-all relations are false.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਸੁ ਨਾਪਾਕ ॥੨॥
jin keetaa tiseh na jaanee manamukh pas naapaak |2|
The self-willed manmukh is an insulting beast; he does not acknowledge the One who created him. ||2||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
antar baahar rav rahiaa tis no jaanai door |
The Lord is pervading within and beyond, and yet people think that He is far away.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਲਾਗੀ ਰਚਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕੂਰਿ ॥
trisanaa laagee rach rahiaa antar haumai koor |
They are engrossed in clinging desires; within their hearts there is ego and falsehood.
ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਆਵਹਿ ਵੰਞਹਿ ਪੂਰ ॥੩॥
bhagatee naam vihooniaa aaveh vanyeh poor |3|
Without devotion to the Naam, crowds of people come and go. ||3||
ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਰਣਹਾਰ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ॥
raakh lehu prabh karanahaar jeea jant kar deaa |
Please preserve Your beings and creatures, God; O Creator Lord, please be merciful!
ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਰਖਨਹਾਰੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਕਟ ਜਮ ਭਇਆ ॥
bin prabh koe na rakhanahaar mahaa bikatt jam bheaa |
Without God, there is no saving grace. The Messenger of Death is cruel and unfeeling.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰਉ ਕਰਿ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਮਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੪॥੮੪॥
naanak naam na veesrau kar apunee har meaa |4|14|84|
O Nanak, may I never forget the Naam! Please bless me with Your Mercy, Lord! ||4||14||84||
ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Siree Raag, Fifth Mehl:
ਮੇਰਾ ਤਨੁ ਅਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਰਾਜ ਰੂਪ ਮੈ ਦੇਸੁ ॥
meraa tan ar dhan meraa raaj roop mai des |
"My body and my wealth; my ruling power, my beautiful form and country-mine!"
ਸੁਤ ਦਾਰਾ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਅਨੇਕ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਰੰਗ ਅਰੁ ਵੇਸ ॥
sut daaraa banitaa anek bahut rang ar ves |
You may have children, a wife and many mistresses; you may enjoy all sorts of pleasures and fine clothes.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਨ ਵਸਈ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਲੇਖਿ ॥੧॥
har naam ridai na vasee kaaraj kitai na lekh |1|
And yet, if the Name of the Lord does not abide within the heart, none of it has any use or value. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥
mere man har har naam dhiaae |
O my mind, meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਕਰਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਿਤ ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kar sangat nit saadh kee gur charanee chit laae |1| rahaau |
Always keep the Company of the Holy, and focus your consciousness on the Feet of the Guru. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ॥
naam nidhaan dhiaaeeai masatak hovai bhaag |
Those who have such blessed destiny written on their foreheads meditate on the Treasure of the Naam.
ਕਾਰਜ ਸਭਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੁ ॥
kaaraj sabh savaareeeh gur kee charanee laag |
All their affairs are brought to fruition, holding onto the Guru's Feet.
ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਨਾ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਜਾਗੁ ॥੨॥
haumai rog bhram katteeai naa aavai naa jaag |2|
The diseases of ego and doubt are cast out; they shall not come and go in reincarnation. ||2||
ਕਰਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਤੂ ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਉ ॥
kar sangat too saadh kee atthasatth teerath naau |
Let the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, be your cleansing baths at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
ਜੀਉ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਰੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਹੁ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
jeeo praan man tan hare saachaa ehu suaau |
Your soul, breath of life, mind and body shall blossom forth in lush profusion; this is the true purpose of life.
ਐਥੈ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਵਡਾਈਆ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਥਾਉ ॥੩॥
aithai mileh vaddaaeea darageh paaveh thaau |3|
In this world you shall be blessed with greatness, and in the Court of the Lord you shall find your place of rest. ||3||
ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਹਾਥਿ ॥
kare karaae aap prabh sabh kichh tis hee haath |
God Himself acts, and causes others to act; everything is in His Hands.
ਮਾਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਜੀਵਾਲਦਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਾਥਿ ॥
maar aape jeevaaladaa antar baahar saath |
He Himself bestows life and death; He is with us, within and beyond.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਸਰਬ ਘਟਾ ਕੇ ਨਾਥ ॥੪॥੧੫॥੮੫॥
naanak prabh saranaagatee sarab ghattaa ke naath |4|15|85|
Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of God, the Master of all hearts. ||4||15||85||
