When Amit Singh, in great fury, discharged innumerable arrows, then the enemy’s fled like the darkness running away in bewilderment before the sun.1226.

ਜਾਤ ਭਜੇ ਜਦਵੀਰ ਪ੍ਰਿਤਨਾ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਪਚਾਰੇ ॥
jaat bhaje jadaveer pritanaa ran mai musalee ih bhaat pachaare |
ਛਤ੍ਰਨਿ ਕੇ ਕੁਲ ਮੈ ਉਪਜੇ ਕਿਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਵਤ ਹੋ ਬਲੁ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
chhatran ke kul mai upaje kih bhaat paraavat ho bal haare |
Balram said to the running away Yadava army, “O warriors born in the clans of Kshatriyas! why are you running away?
ਆਯੁਧ ਛਾਡਤ ਹੋ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਡਰੁ ਮਾਨਿ ਘਨੋ ਬਿਨ ਹੀ ਅਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
aayudh chhaaddat ho kar te ddar maan ghano bin hee ar maare |
“You are dropping your weapons without killing the enemy
ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਕਰੋ ਨ ਕਛੂ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਜਬ ਲਉ ਤਨ ਮੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੧੨੨੭॥
traas karo na kachhoo ran mai jab lau tan mai thir praan hamaare |1227|
You should have not fear of war, till I am alive.”1227.

ਕੋਪ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਹਲੀ ਸੁਭਟਨਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਪਚਾਰਿ ॥

Balram in anger, caressing the warriors, said, “Kill Amit Singh by besieging him.”1228.

ਆਇਸ ਪਾਇ ਤਬੈ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਚਮੂੰ ਲਲਕਾਰ ਪਰੀ ॥

ਅਤਿ ਕੋਪ ਭਰੀ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਅਮਿਟੇਸ ਕੇ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਇ ਅਰੀ ॥
at kop bharee apune man mai amittes ke saamuhe aae aree |
Receiving the command of Balram, his army fell upon the enemy challenging him from all the four directions and filled with rage resisted in front of Amit Singh
ਬਹੁ ਜੁਧੁ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਬੀਚ ਭਯੋ ਕਬ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਨਹੀ ਨੈਕੁ ਡਰੀ ॥
bahu judh ayodhan beech bhayo kab sayaam kahai nahee naik ddaree |
There was dreadful fighting in the battlefield, but the army did not fear even slightly
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬੀਰ ਸਰਾਸਨਿ ਲੈ ਕਰ ਬਾਨ ਘਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਤਨਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਕਰੀ ॥੧੨੨੯॥
nrip beer saraasan lai kar baan ghanee pritanaa bin praan karee |1229|
The king Amit Singh, taking his bow in his hand, killed many warriors of the army and made the army helpless.1229.
ਕਾਟਿ ਕਰੀ ਰਥ ਕਾਟਿ ਦਏ ਬਹੁ ਬੀਰ ਹਨੇ ਅਤਿ ਬਾਜ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
kaatt karee rath kaatt de bahu beer hane at baaj sanghaare |
The elephants, chariots, warriors and horses were killed and destroyed
ਘਾਇਲ ਘੂਮਤ ਹੈ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਕਿਤਨੇ ਸਿਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਪਰੇ ਧਰ ਭਾਰੇ ॥
ghaaeil ghoomat hai ran mai kitane sir bhoom pare dhar bhaare |
Many warriors, getting wounded, are roaming and many huge trunks are lying on the earth
ਜੀਵਤ ਜੇ ਤੇਊ ਆਯੁਧ ਲੈ ਨ ਡਰੇ ਅਰਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਘਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇ ॥
jeevat je teaoo aayudh lai na ddare ar aoopar ghaae prahaare |
Those who are alive, they taking their weapons in their hands are striking blows on the enemy fearlessly
ਤਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਆਹਵ ਮੈ ਅਸਿ ਲੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਖੰਡਨ ਖੰਡ ਕੈ ਡਾਰੇ ॥੧੨੩੦॥
tau tin ke tan aahav mai as lai nrip khanddan khandd kai ddaare |1230|
The king Amit Singh has chopped into bits the bodies of such-like warriors, taking his sword in his hand.1230.
ਜੁਧ ਬਿਖੈ ਅਤਿ ਤੀਰ ਲਗੇ ਬਹੁ ਬੀਰਨ ਕੋ ਤਨ ਸ੍ਰੋਣਤ ਭੀਨੇ ॥

With the infliction of arrows, the bodies of many warriors are saturated with blood
ਕਾਇਰ ਭਾਜ ਗਏ ਰਨ ਤੇ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਡਰ ਸਿਉ ਜਿਹ ਗਾਤ ਪਸੀਨੇ ॥
kaaeir bhaaj ge ran te at hee ddar siau jih gaat paseene |
The cowards have perspired and run away from the battlefield
ਭੂਤ ਪਿਸਾਚ ਕਰੈ ਕਿਲਕਾਰ ਫਿਰੈ ਰਨ ਜੋਗਿਨ ਖਪਰ ਲੀਨੇ ॥
bhoot pisaach karai kilakaar firai ran jogin khapar leene |
ਆਨਿ ਫਿਰਿਓ ਤਹ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰਾਰਿ ਸੁ ਆਧੋਈ ਅੰਗ ਸਿਵਾ ਤਨ ਕੀਨੇ ॥੧੨੩੧॥
aan firio teh sree tripuraar su aadhoee ang sivaa tan keene |1231|
The ghosts and fiends are running raising shrieks and the Yoginis have taken the bowls in their hands, Shiva is also roaming there alongwith his ganas and the dead lying there have been reduced into half, because their flesh in being eaten.1231.

ਮੂਰਛਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਛੇ ਘਰੀ ਤੀਨਿ ਭਏ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤ ॥

ਦਾਰੁਕ ਸੋ ਕਹਿਓ ਹਾਕਿ ਰਥੁ ਪੁਨਿ ਆਏ ਜਹ ਖੇਤੁ ॥੧੨੩੨॥
daaruk so kahio haak rath pun aae jeh khet |1232|
Krishna regained consciousness after about three gharis (short span of time) of remaining unconscious and getting his chariot driven by Daruk, he reached the battlefield again.1232.

ਜਾਨੋ ਸਹਾਇ ਭਯੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਬਹੁਰੋ ਜਦੁ ਬੰਸਨਿ ਕੋਪ ਜਗਿਯੋ ॥
jaano sahaae bhayo har ko bahuro jad bansan kop jagiyo |
When the warriors of Yadava can saw Krishna coming for their help
ਅਮਿਟੇਸ ਸੋ ਧਾਇ ਅਰੇ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਤਿਹ ਜੋਧਨ ਸੋ ਨਹੀ ਏਕ ਭਗਿਯੋ ॥
amittes so dhaae are ran mai tih jodhan so nahee ek bhagiyo |
The anger awoke in them, they ran to fight against Amit Singh and none of them ran away from the battlefield
ਗਹਿ ਬਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਗਦਾ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਦਲੁ ਆਹਵ ਕੋ ਉਮਗਿਯੋ ॥
geh baan kamaan kripaan gadaa at hee dal aahav ko umagiyo |
ਬਹੁ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਪਗੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਜਗੇ ਮਨੋ ਆਗਿ ਲਗੇ ਗਨ ਸਾਲ ਦਗਿਯੋ ॥੧੨੩੩॥
bahu sraun page rang sayaam jage mano aag lage gan saal dagiyo |1233|
The forces rushed forward taking their swords, bows, arrows, maces etc., the warriors filled with blood were gleaming like a heap of straw burning in fire.1233.
ਬਿਬਿਧਾਯੁਧ ਲੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਜੁਧੁ ਕੀਓ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਭਟ ਕੋਪ ਭਰੇ ॥
bibidhaayudh lai pun judh keeo at hee man mai bhatt kop bhare |
The warriors waged the war in fury taking up their weapons
ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਹਿ ਮਾਰੁ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਪਰੇ ਲਖਿ ਕੈ ਰਨ ਕਉ ਨਹੀ ਨੈਕੁ ਡਰੇ ॥
mukh te keh maar hee maar pare lakh kai ran kau nahee naik ddare |
All were shouting “Kill, Kill” and not fearing even slightly
ਪੁਨਿ ਯਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਿਉ ਕਬਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਕਹੈ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਘਨੇ ਅਰਿ ਸਾਥ ਅਰੇ ॥
pun yaa bidh siau kab raam kahai jadubeer ghane ar saath are |
The poet says again that Krishna resisted numerous warriors
ਰਿਸਿ ਭੂਪ ਤਬੈ ਬਲ ਕੈ ਅਸਿ ਲੈ ਰਿਪੁ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਦ੍ਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਚਾਰ ਕਰੇ ॥੧੨੩੪॥
ris bhoop tabai bal kai as lai rip ke tan dvai kar chaar kare |1234|
On the other side, the king Amit Singh, in great rage, simultaneously chopped the bodies of two warriors at a time into four parts.1234.
ਐਸੀ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਚੀ ਜੋਊ ਜੀਵਤ ਥੇ ਤਜਿ ਜੁਧੁ ਪਰਾਨੇ ॥
aisee nihaar kai maar machee joaoo jeevat the taj judh paraane |
Seeing such a dreadful war, those warriors who were coming for fighting left and ran away from war-arena
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੇ ਅਮਿਟੇਸ ਕੇ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਹਵ ਮੈ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਠਹਿਰਾਨੇ ॥
sayaam bhane amittes ke saamuhe aahav mai koaoo na tthahiraane |
No one could confront Amit Singh
ਜੇ ਬਰ ਬੀਰ ਕਹਾਵਤ ਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਰ ਭਿਰੇ ਰਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਤ ਬਾਨੇ ॥
je bar beer kahaavat hai bahu baar bhire ran baadhit baane |
ਸੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਚਲੇ ਭਜਿ ਕੈ ਜਿਮ ਪਉਨ ਬਹੇ ਦ੍ਰੁਮ ਪਾਤ ਉਡਾਨੇ ॥੧੨੩੫॥
so ih bhaat chale bhaj kai jim paun bahe drum paat uddaane |1235|
Those who called themselves great warriors, and were roaming wielding many kings of weapons, they ran away from the battlefield like the leaves of a tree flying away before the blow of wind.1235.
ਕੇਤੇ ਰਹੇ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਰੁਪ ਕੈ ਕਿਤਨੇ ਭਜਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕੇ ਤੀਰ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ॥
kete rahe ran mai rup kai kitane bhaj sayaam ke teer pukaare |
Some of the warriors stood firmly in war and some of them, inflicted by the arrows of Krishna speed away from the field crying
ਬੀਰ ਘਨੇ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤ ਗਨੇ ਅਮਿਟੇਸਿ ਬਲੀ ਰਿਸ ਸਾਥਿ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
beer ghane nahee jaat gane amittes balee ris saath sanghaare |
Amit Singh killed many, they can’t be enumerated
ਬਾਜ ਮਰੇ ਗਜ ਰਾਜ ਪਰੇ ਸੁ ਕਹੂੰ ਰਥ ਕਾਟਿ ਕੈ ਭੂ ਪਰਿ ਡਾਰੇ ॥
baaj mare gaj raaj pare su kahoon rath kaatt kai bhoo par ddaare |
Somewhere the horses, somewhere the elephants and somewhere the shattered chariots were lying on the ground
ਆਵਤ ਕਾ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਹਰਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਨਹਾਰੇ ॥੧੨੩੬॥
aavat kaa tumare man mai karataa harataa pratipaalanahaare |1236|
O Lord! you are the creator, sustainer and the destroyer, What is in your mind, no one can understand.1236.

ਕਿਆ ਜੰਗਲੁ ਢੂਢੀ ਜਾਇ ਮੈ ਘਰਿ ਬਨੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ॥
kiaa jangal dtoodtee jaae mai ghar ban hareeaavalaa |
Why should I go searching in the forests, when the woods of my home are so green?
ਸਚਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਤਾਵਲਾ ॥੧॥
sach ttikai ghar aae sabad utaavalaa |1|
The True Word of the Shabad has instantaneously come and settled in my heart. ||1||
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਸੋਇ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
jeh dekhaa teh soe avar na jaaneeai |
Wherever I look, there He is; I know no other.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur kee kaar kamaae mehal pachhaaneeai |1| rahaau |
Working for the Guru, one realizes the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||1||Pause||
ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਈ ॥
aap milaavai sach taa man bhaavee |
The True Lord blends us with Himself, when it is pleasing to His Mind.
ਚਲੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਜਾਇ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵਈ ॥੨॥
chalai sadaa rajaae ank samaavee |2|
One who ever walks in accordance with His Will, merges into His Being. ||2||
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
sachaa saahib man vasai vasiaa man soee |
When the True Lord dwells in the mind, that mind flourishes.
ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
aape de vaddiaaeea de tott na hoee |3|
He Himself grants greatness; His Gifts are never exhausted. ||3||
ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਿਉ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
abe tabe kee chaakaree kiau daragah paavai |
Serving this and that person, how can one obtain the Lord's Court?
ਪਥਰ ਕੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਜੇ ਚੜੈ ਭਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਬੁਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
pathar kee berree je charrai bhar naal buddaavai |4|
If someone embarks on a boat of stone, he shall drown with its cargo. ||4||
ਆਪਨੜਾ ਮਨੁ ਵੇਚੀਐ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
aapanarraa man vecheeai sir deejai naale |
So offer your mind, and surrender your head with it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਅਪਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਭਾਲੇ ॥੫॥
guramukh vasat pachhaaneeai apanaa ghar bhaale |5|
The Gurmukh realizes the true essence, and finds the home of his own self. ||5||
ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਤਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕੀਆ ॥
jaman maranaa aakheeai tin karatai keea |
People discuss birth and death; the Creator created this.
ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਥੀਆ ॥੬॥
aap gavaaeaa mar rahe fir maran na theea |6|
Those who conquer their selfhood and remain dead, shall never have to die again. ||6||
ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਧੁਰ ਕੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ॥
saaee kaar kamaavanee dhur kee furamaaee |
Do those deeds which the Primal Lord has ordered for you.
ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
je man satigur de milai kin keemat paaee |7|
If one surrenders his mind upon meeting the True Guru, who can estimate its value? ||7||
ਰਤਨਾ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਸੋ ਧਣੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
ratanaa paarakh so dhanee tin keemat paaee |
That Lord Master is the Assayer of the jewel of the mind; He places the value on it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥੧੭॥
naanak saahib man vasai sachee vaddiaaee |8|17|
O Nanak, True is the Glory of that one, in whose mind the Lord Master dwells. ||8||17||

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
jinaee naam visaariaa doojai bharam bhulaaee |
Those who have forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are deluded by doubt and duality.
ਮੂਲੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਡਾਲੀ ਲਗੇ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥
mool chhodd ddaalee lage kiaa paaveh chhaaee |1|
Those who abandon the roots and cling to the branches, shall obtain only ashes. ||1||
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
bin naavai kiau chhootteeai je jaanai koee |
Without the Name, how can one be emancipated? Who knows this?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramukh hoe ta chhootteeai manamukh pat khoee |1| rahaau |
One who becomes Gurmukh is emancipated; the self-willed manmukhs lose their honor. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਏਕੋ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
jinaee eko seviaa pooree mat bhaaee |
Those who serve the One Lord become perfect in their understanding, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਾ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥
aad jugaad niranjanaa jan har saranaaee |2|
The Lord's humble servant finds Sanctuary in Him, the Immaculate One, from the very beginning, and throughout the ages. ||2||
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥
saahib meraa ek hai avar nahee bhaaee |
My Lord and Master is the One; there is no other, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਚੇ ਪਰਥਾਈ ॥੩॥
kirapaa te sukh paaeaa saache parathaaee |3|
By the Grace of the True Lord, celestial peace is obtained. ||3||
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕੇਤੀ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
gur bin kinai na paaeo ketee kahai kahaae |
Without the Guru, no one has obtained Him, although many may claim to have done so.
ਆਪਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਵਾਟੜੀਂ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥੪॥
aap dikhaavai vaattarreen sachee bhagat drirraae |4|
He Himself reveals the Way, and implants true devotion within. ||4||
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਜੇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੀ ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਏ ॥
manamukh je samajhaaeeai bhee ujharr jaae |
Even if the self-willed manmukh is instructed, he stills goes into the wilderness.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਛੂਟਸੀ ਮਰਿ ਨਰਕ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੫॥
bin har naam na chhoottasee mar narak samaae |5|
Without the Lord's Name, he shall not be emancipated; he shall die, and sink into hell. ||5||
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
janam marai bharamaaeeai har naam na levai |
He wanders through birth and death, and never chants the Lord's Name.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵੈ ॥੬॥
taa kee keemat naa pavai bin gur kee sevai |6|
He never realizes his own value, without serving the Guru. ||6||
ਜੇਹੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਾਈਐ ਕਰਣੀ ਭੀ ਸਾਈ ॥
jehee sev karaaeeai karanee bhee saaee |
Whatever service the Lord causes us to do, that is just what we do.
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੭॥
aap kare kis aakheeai vekhai vaddiaaee |7|
He Himself acts; who else should be mentioned? He beholds His own greatness. ||7||
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
gur kee sevaa so kare jis aap karaae |
He alone serves the Guru, whom the Lord Himself inspires to do so.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੇ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੮॥੧੮॥
naanak sir de chhootteeai daragah pat paae |8|18|
O Nanak, offering his head, one is emancipated, and honored in the Court of the Lord. ||8||18||
