ਅਮਿਟ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੇ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਢਾਇ ॥
amitt singh ke bachan sun har joo krodh badtaae |
ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਬੈ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਲਏ ਸਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਹੁਚਿਯੋ ਧਾਇ ॥੧੨੧੮॥
sasatr sabai kar mai le sanamukh pahuchiyo dhaae |1218|
Hearing the words of Amit Singh and in great anger, carrying all his weapons in his hands, Krishna reached in front of Amit Singh.1218.

ਆਵਤ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕੋ ਪੇਖਿ ਬਲੀ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਕੋਪ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥
aavat sayaam ko pekh balee apune man mai at kop badtaayo |
Seeing Krishna coming, that mighty warrior got highly enraged
ਚਾਰੋ ਈ ਘੋਰਨਿ ਘਾਇਲ ਕੈ ਸਰ ਤੀਛਨ ਦਾਰੁਕ ਕੇ ਉਰਿ ਲਾਯੋ ॥
chaaro ee ghoran ghaaeil kai sar teechhan daaruk ke ur laayo |
He wounded all the four horses of Krishna and inflicted a sharp arrow in the bosom of Daruk
ਦੂਸਰੇ ਤੀਰ ਸੋ ਕਾਨ੍ਰਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਸੁ ਕੋਪ ਹਨ︀ਯੋ ਜੋਊ ਠਉਰ ਤਕਾਯੋ ॥
doosare teer so kaanrah sareer su kop hanayo joaoo tthaur takaayo |
He discharged the second arrow on Krishna, seeing him in front of himself
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਅਮਿਟੇਸ ਮਨੋ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਕੀ ਦੇਹ ਕੋ ਲਛ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥੧੨੧੯॥
sayaam kahai amittes mano jadubeer kee deh ko lachh banaayo |1219|
The poet says that Amit Singh made Krishna as the target.1219.
ਬਾਨ ਚਲਾਇ ਘਨੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਇਕ ਲੈ ਸਰ ਤੀਛਨ ਔਰ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥
baan chalaae ghane har ko ik lai sar teechhan aauar chalaayo |
Discharging his arrows towards Krishna, he shot a sharp arrow, which hit Krishna, and he fell down in his chariot
ਲਾਗਤ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਗਿਰਿਓ ਰਥ ਮੈ ਰਨ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਦਾਰੁਕ ਸੂਤ ਪਰਾਯੋ ॥
laagat sayaam girio rath mai ran chhaadd kai daaruk soot paraayo |
The charioteer of Krishna, Daruk, sped alongwith him.
ਦੇਖ ਕੈ ਭੂਪ ਭਜਿਯੋ ਬਲਬੀਰ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ਚਮੂੰ ਤਿਹ ਊਪਰ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
dekh kai bhoop bhajiyo balabeer nihaar chamoon tih aoopar dhaayo |
Seeing Krishna going away, the king fell upon his army
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਹੇਰਿ ਬਡੇ ਸਰ ਕੋ ਗਜਰਾਜ ਕਵੀ ਗਨ ਰੌਦਨ ਆਯੋ ॥੧੨੨੦॥
maanahu her badde sar ko gajaraaj kavee gan rauadan aayo |1220|
It seemed that seeing a large tank, the king of elephants was moving forward to crush it.1220.
ਆਵਤ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਲੀ ਅਰਿ ਕੋ ਸੁ ਧਵਾਇ ਕੈ ਸ︀ਯੰਦਨ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਯੋ ॥
aavat dekh halee ar ko su dhavaae kai sayandan saamuhe aayo |
ਤਾਨਿ ਲੀਯੋ ਧਨੁ ਕੋ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਸਰ ਕੋ ਧਰ ਕੈ ਅਰਿ ਓਰਿ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥
taan leeyo dhan ko kar mai sar ko dhar kai ar or chalaayo |
When Balram saw the enemy coming, he drove his horses and came in front and pulling his bow, he discharged his arrows on the enemy
ਸੋ ਅਮਿਟੇਸ ਜੂ ਨੈਨ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ਸੁ ਆਵਤ ਬਾਨ ਸੁ ਕਾਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਯੋ ॥
so amittes joo nain nihaar su aavat baan su kaatt giraayo |
ਆਇ ਭਿਰਿਯੋ ਬਲ ਸਿਉ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਜੀਯ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਕੋਪੁ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥੧੨੨੧॥
aae bhiriyo bal siau tab hee apune jeey mai at kop badtaayo |1221|
His arrows were intercepted by Amit Singh and in extreme anger came to fight with Balram.1221.
ਕਾਟਿ ਧੁਜਾ ਰਥੁ ਕਾਟਿ ਦਯੋ ਅਸਿ ਚਾਪ ਕੋ ਕਾਟਿ ਜੁਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਡਾਰਿਓ ॥
kaatt dhujaa rath kaatt dayo as chaap ko kaatt judaa kar ddaario |
The banner, chariot, sword, bow etc. of Balram were all cut into bits
ਮੂਸਲ ਅਉ ਹਲ ਕਾਟਿ ਦਯੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਯੁਧ ਹੁਇ ਬਲਦੇਵ ਪਧਾਰਿਓ ॥
moosal aau hal kaatt dayo bin aayudh hue baladev padhaario |
The mace and plough were also chopped and being deprived of his weapons, Balram began to move away
ਜਾਤ ਕਹਾ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਭਜਿ ਕੈ ਕਬਿ ਰਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰਿਓ ॥
jaat kahaa musalee bhaj kai kab raam kahai ih bhaat uchaario |
ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਅਸਿ ਕੋ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਲਹਿ ਕੈ ਦਲ ਜਾਦਵ ਕੋ ਲਲਕਾਰਿਓ ॥੧੨੨੨॥
yau keh kai as ko geh kai leh kai dal jaadav ko lalakaario |1222|
Seeing this, Amit Singh said, “O Balram! why are you running away now?” Saying this and holding his sward in his hand Amit Singh Challenged the Yadava army.1222.
ਜੋ ਇਹ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਇ ਭਿਰੈ ਭਟ ਤਾ ਹੀ ਸੰਘਾਰ ਕੈ ਭੂਮਿ ਗਿਰਾਵੈ ॥
jo ih saamuhe aae bhirai bhatt taa hee sanghaar kai bhoom giraavai |
The warrior who would come in front of him, Amit Singh would kill him
ਕਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ਲਉ ਤਾਨਿ ਕਮਾਨ ਘਨੇ ਸਰ ਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
kaan pramaan lau taan kamaan ghane sar satran ke tan laavai |
Pulling his bow upto his ear, he was showering his arrows on the enemies
ਸੋਊ ਬਚੇ ਤਿਹ ਤੇ ਬਲ ਬੀਰ ਜੋਊ ਭਜਿ ਆਪਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਬਚਾਵੈ ॥
soaoo bache tih te bal beer joaoo bhaj aapane praan bachaavai |
Only that warrior would remain safe, who would run away to save himself
ਅਉਰਨ ਕੀ ਸੁ ਕਹਾ ਗਨਤੀ ਜੁ ਬਡੇ ਭਟ ਜੀਵਤ ਜਾਨ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧੨੨੩॥
aauran kee su kahaa ganatee ju badde bhatt jeevat jaan na paavai |1223|
What was number of others? Even the great warriors could not go alive from that place.1223.
ਮੂਸਲ ਅਉਰ ਲਏ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਚੜਿ ਸ︀ਯੰਦਨ ਪੈ ਬਹੁਰੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
moosal aaur le musalee charr sayandan pai bahuro fir dhaayo |
ਆਵਤ ਹੀ ਬਲ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੋ ਚਤੁਰੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕੋ ਜੁਧੁ ਮਚਾਯੋ ॥
aavat hee bal kai nrip so chaturang prakaar ko judh machaayo |
Balram mounted on his chariot came again with the other mace and on his arrival, he began to wage war of four types with the king
ਅਉਰ ਜਿਤੇ ਭਟ ਠਾਢੇ ਹੁਤੇ ਰਿਸ ਕੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
aaur jite bhatt tthaadte hute ris kai mukh te ih bhaat sunaayo |
He, in great, anger, said to all the other remaining warriors, “Do not let him go alive
ਜਾਨਿ ਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਅਰੇ ਅਰਿ ਕੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਦਲੁ ਕੋਪੁ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥੧੨੨੪॥
jaan na dehu are ar ko sun kai har ke dal kop badtaayo |1224|
” Hearing these words, the forces of Krishna also became infuriated.1224.
ਐਸੇ ਹਲਾਯੁਧ ਕੋਪਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਤਬ ਜਾਦਵ ਬੀਰ ਸਬੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਧਾਏ ॥
aise halaayudh kop kahiyo tab jaadav beer sabai mil dhaae |
When Balram exhibited his ire in this manner, then all the Yadava warriors fell upon the enemy whosoever now came before them, could not return alive
ਜੋ ਇਹ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਇ ਅਰੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੋ ਤੇਊ ਜੀਵਤ ਜਾਨਿ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
jo ih saamuhe aae are grih ko teaoo jeevat jaan na paae |
All those who were standing there,
ਅਉਰ ਜਿਤੇ ਤਹ ਠਾਢੇ ਹੁਤੇ ਅਸਿ ਲੈ ਬਰਛੈ ਪਰਸੇ ਗਹਿ ਆਏ ॥
aaur jite teh tthaadte hute as lai barachhai parase geh aae |
They started moving with their axes and lances
ਤੇਊ ਭਿਰੇ ਜੋਊ ਲਾਜ ਭਰੇ ਅਰਿ ਕੋ ਬਰ ਕੈ ਤਿਨ ਘਾਇ ਲਗਾਏ ॥੧੨੨੫॥
teaoo bhire joaoo laaj bhare ar ko bar kai tin ghaae lagaae |1225|
Keeping into consideration their honour and custom, they struck blows on the enemy with full strength.1225.
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਲੇ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਸਚਿ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
manasaa maneh samaaeile bhaujal sach taranaa |
Stilling the desires of the mind, the mortal truly crosses over the terrifying world-ocean.
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤੂ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥੧॥
aad jugaad deaal too tthaakur teree saranaa |1|
In the very beginning, and throughout the ages, You have been the Merciful Lord and Master; I seek Your Sanctuary. ||1||
ਤੂ ਦਾਤੌ ਹਮ ਜਾਚਿਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
too daatau ham jaachikaa har darasan deejai |
You are the Giver, and I am a mere beggar. Lord, please grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਨ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramukh naam dhiaaeeai man mandar bheejai |1| rahaau |
The Gurmukh meditates on the Naam; the temple of his mind resounds with joy. ||1||Pause||
ਕੂੜਾ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡੀਐ ਤਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
koorraa laalach chhoddeeai tau saach pachhaanai |
Renouncing false greed, one comes to realize the Truth.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਪਰਮਾਰਥੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੨॥
gur kai sabad samaaeeai paramaarath jaanai |2|
So let yourself be absorbed in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and know this supreme realization. ||2||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਲੋਭੀਆ ਲੁਭਤਉ ਲੋਭਾਈ ॥
eihu man raajaa lobheea lubhtau lobhaaee |
This mind is a greedy king, engrossed in greed.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ॥੩॥
guramukh lobh nivaareeai har siau ban aaee |3|
The Gurmukh eliminates his greed, and comes to an understanding with the Lord. ||3||
ਕਲਰਿ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kalar khetee beejeeai kiau laahaa paavai |
Planting the seeds in the rocky soil, how can one reap a profit?
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਭੀਜਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਗਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
manamukh sach na bheejee koorr koorr gaddaavai |4|
The self-willed manmukh is not pleased with Truth; the false are buried in falsehood. ||4||
ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਅੰਧਿਹੋ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
laalach chhoddahu andhiho laalach dukh bhaaree |
So renounce greed - you are blind! Greed only brings pain.
ਸਾਚੌ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
saachau saahib man vasai haumai bikh maaree |5|
When the True Lord dwells within the mind, the poisonous ego is conquered. ||5||
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਮੂਸਹੁਗੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
dubidhaa chhodd kuvaattarree moosahuge bhaaee |
Renounce the evil way of duality, or you shall be plundered, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੬॥
ahinis naam salaaheeai satigur saranaaee |6|
Day and night, praise the Naam, in the Sanctuary of the True Guru's protection. ||6||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਥਰੁ ਸੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਫੀਕਾ ॥
manamukh pathar sail hai dhrig jeevan feekaa |
The self-willed manmukh is a rock, a stone. His life is cursed and useless.
ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕੇਤਾ ਰਾਖੀਐ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੂਕਾ ॥੭॥
jal meh ketaa raakheeai abh antar sookaa |7|
No matter now long a stone is kept under water, it still remains dry at its core. ||7||
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥
har kaa naam nidhaan hai poorai gur deea |
The Name of the Lord is the treasure; the Perfect Guru has given it to me.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ॥੮॥੧੫॥
naanak naam na veesarai math amrit peea |8|15|
O Nanak, one who does not forget the Naam, churns and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||8||15||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਚਲੇ ਚਲਣਹਾਰ ਵਾਟ ਵਟਾਇਆ ॥
chale chalanahaar vaatt vattaaeaa |
The travellers travel from one road to another.
ਧੰਧੁ ਪਿਟੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
dhandh pitte sansaar sach na bhaaeaa |1|
The world is engrossed in its entanglements, and does not appreciate the Truth. ||1||
ਕਿਆ ਭਵੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਢੂਢੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
kiaa bhaveeai kiaa dtoodteeai gur sabad dikhaaeaa |
Why wander around, and why go searching, when the Guru's Shabad reveals Him to us?
ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਿਸਰਜਿਆ ਅਪਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mamataa mohu visarajiaa apanai ghar aaeaa |1| rahaau |
Leaving behind egotism and attachment, I have arrived at my own home. ||1||Pause||
ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
sach milai sachiaar koorr na paaeeai |
Through Truth, one meets the True One; He is not obtained through falsehood.
ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ॥੨॥
sache siau chit laae bahurr na aaeeai |2|
Centering your consciousness on the True Lord, you shall not have to come into the world again. ||2||
ਮੋਇਆ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਰੋਵਹੁ ਰੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੂ ॥
moeaa kau kiaa rovahu roe na jaanahoo |
Why do you weep for the dead? You do not know how to weep.
ਰੋਵਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੂ ॥੩॥
rovahu sach salaeh hukam pachhaanahoo |3|
Weep by praising the True Lord, and recognize His Command. ||3||
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਵਜਹੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
hukamee vajahu likhaae aaeaa jaaneeai |
Blessed is the birth of one who is destined to abide by the Lord's Command.
ਲਾਹਾ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ ॥੪॥
laahaa palai paae hukam siyaaneeai |4|
He obtains the true profit, realizing the Lord's Command. ||4||
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਭਾਣੀਐ ॥
hukamee paidhaa jaae daragah bhaaneeai |
If it pleases the Commander, one goes to His Court, robed in honor.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰ ਬੰਦਿ ਰਬਾਣੀਐ ॥੫॥
hukame hee sir maar band rabaaneeai |5|
By His Command, God's slaves are hit over the head. ||5||
ਲਾਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਆਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥
laahaa sach niaau man vasaaeeai |
The profit is earned by enshrining Truth and justice in the mind.
ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਗਰਬੁ ਵਞਾਈਐ ॥੬॥
likhiaa palai paae garab vayaaeeai |6|
They obtain what is written in their destiny, and overcome pride. ||6||
ਮਨਮੁਖੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰ ਵਾਦਿ ਖਪਾਈਐ ॥
manamukheea sir maar vaad khapaaeeai |
The self-willed manmukhs are hit over the head, and consumed by conflict.
ਠਗਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਬੰਨੑਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥੭॥
tthag mutthee koorriaar bana chalaaeeai |7|
The cheaters are plundered by falsehood; they are chained and led away. ||7||
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੀ ॥
saahib ridai vasaae na pachhotaavahee |
Enshrine the Lord Master in your mind, and you shall not have to repent.
ਗੁਨਹਾਂ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੀ ॥੮॥
gunahaan bakhasanahaar sabad kamaavahee |8|
He forgives our sins, when we practice the Teachings of the Guru's Word. ||8||
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਘਾਲੀਐ ॥
naanak mangai sach guramukh ghaaleeai |
Nanak begs for the True Name, which is obtained by the Gurmukh.
ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ॥੯॥੧੬॥
mai tujh bin avar na koe nadar nihaaleeai |9|16|
Without You, I have no other at all; please, bless me with Your Glance of Grace. ||9||16||
