He said to Krishna, “You have killed Addar Singh fraudulently
ਅਜਬ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਰਿ ਕਪਟ ਖਪਾਯੋ ॥
ajab singh kar kapatt khapaayo |
ਇਹ ਸਭ ਭੇਦ ਹਮੋ ਲਖਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੧੨੦੫॥
eih sabh bhed hamo lakh paayo |1205|
You have also killed Ajaib Singh Dishonestly and I know this secret very well.”1205.

Aghar Singh spoke extremely fearlessly in front of Krishna
ਬਚਨ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਸੋਂ ਜੇ ਕਹੇ ਸੋ ਕਬਿ ਕਹਿਤ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥੧੨੦੬॥
bachan sayaam son je kahe so kab kahit sunaae |1206|
Whatever words he spoke to Krishna, the poet now tells them.1206.

ਢੀਠ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਬੋਲਤ ਭਯੋ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਹਸਿ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਬਤੀਯਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੈਹੋ ॥
dteetth hvai bolat bhayo ran mai has kai har so bateeyaa sun laiho |
He spoke to Krishna in the battlefield without any shame, “You are uselessly angry with us
ਕ੍ਰੁਧ ਕੀਏ ਹਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਿਸੰਗ ਕਹਾ ਅਬ ਜੁਧ ਕੀਏ ਫਲੁ ਪੈ ਹੋ ॥
krudh kee ham sang nisang kahaa ab judh kee fal pai ho |
What will you gain from this war? You are still a boy,
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਲਰੋ ਨਹੀ ਮੋ ਸੰਗਿ ਆਇ ਕੈ ਹੋ ਲਰਿਕਾ ਰਨ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਰੈ ਹੋ ॥
taa te laro nahee mo sang aae kai ho larikaa ran dekh parai ho |
“Therefore do not fight with me and run away
ਜੋ ਹਠ ਕੈ ਲਰਿ ਹੋ ਮਰਿ ਹੋ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਜੀਤਿ ਨ ਜੈਹੋ ॥੧੨੦੭॥
jo hatth kai lar ho mar ho apune grih maarag jeet na jaiho |1207|
In case you persist in fighting, then you will not find the way to your home and will be killed.”1207.

ਜਿਉ ਬੋਲਿਯੋ ਅਤਿ ਗਰਬ ਸਿਉ ਇਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਐਚਿ ਕਮਾਨ ॥
jiau boliyo at garab siau it har aich kamaan |
When he spoke with pride like this, Krishna pulled his bow and the arrow hit his face
ਸਰ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ਅਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬਿਖੈ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਛਿਤਿ ਆਨਿ ॥੧੨੦੮॥
sar maariyo ar mukh bikhai pariyo mritak chhit aan |1208|
With the infliction of the arrow, he died and fell upon the earth.1208.
ਅਰਜਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਤਬ ਢੀਠ ਹੁਇ ਕਹੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਸੋ ਬਾਤ ॥
arajan singh tab dteetth hue kahee krisan so baat |
ਮਹਾਬਲੀ ਹਉ ਆਜ ਹੀ ਕਰਿ ਹੋਂ ਤੇਰੋ ਘਾਤ ॥੧੨੦੯॥
mahaabalee hau aaj hee kar hon tero ghaat |1209|
Then the obstinate Arjun Singh said to Krishna, “I am a mighty warrior and shall knock you down immediately.”1209.
ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਹਰਿ ਖਗੁ ਲੈ ਅਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਝਾਰਿਯੋ ਧਾਇ ॥
sunat bachan har khag lai ar sir jhaariyo dhaae |
ਗਿਰਿਓ ਮਨੋ ਆਂਧੀ ਬਚੇ ਬਡੋ ਬ੍ਰਿਛ ਮੁਰਝਾਇ ॥੧੨੧੦॥
girio mano aandhee bache baddo brichh murajhaae |1210|
Hearing this, Krishna struck a blow on his head with his dagger and he fell down like a tree in a storm.1210.

ਅਰਜਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਹਨ︀ਯੋ ਅਸਿ ਸਿਉ ਅਮਰੇਸ ਮਹੀਪ ਹਨਿਓ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥

ਅਟਲੇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕੋਪ ਭਯੋ ਲਖਿ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੁਨੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਲਏ ਸਬ ਹੀ ॥
attales prakop bhayo lakh kai har aapune sasatr le sab hee |
Arjun Singh and the king named Amresh Singh were killed with the dagger, then Krishna held his weapons, getting furious on Atlesh
ਅਤਿ ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਇ ਅਰਿਓ ਜਬ ਹੀ ॥
at maar hee maar pukaar pario har saamuhe aae ario jab hee |
He also began to say “Kill, Kill”, while coming in front of Krishna
ਕਲਧਉਤ ਕੇ ਭੂਖਨ ਅੰਗ ਸਜੇ ਜਿਹ ਕੀ ਛਬਿ ਸੋ ਸਵਿਤਾ ਦਬ ਹੀ ॥੧੨੧੧॥
kaldhaut ke bhookhan ang saje jih kee chhab so savitaa dab hee |1211|
Before the glory of his limbs bedecked with gold ornaments, even the sun seemed bedimmed.1211.
ਜਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ਕੀਓ ਘਮਸਾਨ ਬਡੌ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਸੰਘਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
jaam pramaan keeo ghamasaan baddau balavaan na jaae sanghaariyo |
He waged a violent war for one Pabar (about three hours), but he could not be killed
ਮੇਘ ਜਿਉ ਗਾਜਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਤਬੈ ਅਸਿ ਲੈ ਕਰਿ ਮੈ ਅਰਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਝਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
megh jiau gaaj muraar tabai as lai kar mai ar aoopar jhaariyo |
Then Krishna thundering like the cloud, struck a blow on the enemy with his sword,
ਹੁਇ ਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭੂਮਿ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਜਬੈ ਸਿਰੁ ਕਾਟਿ ਉਤਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
hue mrit bhoom pariyo tab hee jadubeer jabai sir kaatt utaariyo |
And when Krishna cut down his head, he died and fell on the earth
ਧੰਨਿ ਹੀ ਧੰਨਿ ਕਹੈ ਸਬ ਦੇਵ ਬਡੋ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਭਵ ਭਾਰ ਉਤਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੨੧੨॥
dhan hee dhan kahai sab dev baddo har joo bhav bhaar utaariyo |1212|
Seeing this, the gods hailed and said, “O Krishna! you have lightened a great burden of the earth.”1212.

ਅਮਿਟ ਸਿੰਘ ਤਬ ਅਮਿਟ ਹੁਇ ਕੀਨੋ ਜੁਧ ਉਪਾਉ ॥੧੨੧੩॥
amitt singh tab amitt hue keeno judh upaau |1213|
When Atal Singh, who was the king of many warriors, was killed, then Amit Singh started his efforts for waging war.1213.

ਬੋਲਤ ਇਉ ਹਠਿ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਭਟ ਤਉ ਲਖਿ ਹੋ ਜਬ ਮੋ ਸੋ ਲਰੈਗੋ ॥
bolat iau hatth kai har so bhatt tau lakh ho jab mo so laraigo |
He said to Krishna, “I shall consider you a great warrior, if you fight with me
ਮੋ ਕੋ ਕਹਾ ਹਨਿ ਰਾਜਨ ਜ︀ਯੋ ਛਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਹੁਇ ਛਲ ਸਾਥ ਛਰੈਗੋ ॥
mo ko kahaa han raajan jayo chhal moorat hue chhal saath chharaigo |
Will you also deceive me like these kings through stratagem?
ਮੋ ਅਤਿ ਕੋਪ ਭਰੋ ਲਖਿ ਕੈ ਰਹਿ ਹੋ ਨਹਿ ਆਹਵ ਹੂੰ ਤੇ ਟਰੈਗੋ ॥
mo at kop bharo lakh kai reh ho neh aahav hoon te ttaraigo |
ਜਉ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਭਿਰ ਹੋ ਹਮ ਸੋ ਨਿਸਚੈ ਨਿਜ ਦੇਹ ਕੋ ਤਿਆਗੁ ਕਰੈਗੋ ॥੧੨੧੪॥
jau kabahoon bhir ho ham so nisachai nij deh ko tiaag karaigo |1214|
“You will definitely run away from the field seeing me greatly infuriated and if you fight with me at any time, then you will assuredly leave your body.1214.
ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਕਾਨ੍ਰਹ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਹਿਤ ਔਰਨ ਕੇ ਰਿਸ ਕੈ ਰਨ ਪਾਰੋ ॥
kaahe kau kaanrah ayodhan mai hit aauaran ke ris kai ran paaro |
ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਘਾਇ ਸਹੋ ਤਨ ਮੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਕਾ ਕੇ ਕਹੇ ਅਰਿ ਭੂਪਨਿ ਮਾਰੋ ॥
kaahe kau ghaae saho tan mai pun kaa ke kahe ar bhoopan maaro |
“O Krishna! why are you waging war in great anger? Why are you enduring wounds on your body? On whose bidding you are killing the kings?
ਜੀਵਤ ਹੋ ਤਬ ਲਉ ਜਗ ਮੈ ਜਬ ਲਉ ਮੁਹਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਭਿਰਿਓ ਨ ਬਿਚਾਰੋ ॥
jeevat ho tab lau jag mai jab lau muhi sang bhirio na bichaaro |
“You will remain alive only if you do not fight with me
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਜਾਨ ਕੈ ਛਾਡਤ ਹੋ ਤਜਿ ਕੈ ਰਨ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਜੂ ਧਾਮਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੋ ॥੧੨੧੫॥
sundar jaan kai chhaaddat ho taj kai ran sayaam joo dhaam sidhaaro |1215|
Considering you beautiful, I condone you, therefore leave the war-arena and go to your home.”1215.
ਫੇਰਿ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਰਿਸਿ ਕੇ ਅਮਿਟੇਸ ਬਲੀ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥
fer ayodhan mai ris ke amittes balee ih bhaat uchaaro |
ਬੈਸ ਕਿਸੋਰ ਮਨੋਹਰਿ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਲੈ ਹੋ ਕਹਾ ਲਖਿ ਜੁਧ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥
bais kisor manohar moorat lai ho kahaa lakh judh hamaaro |
Amit Singh spoke again in the battlefield, “Still you rage is much less and it will be of no value to you, if you see me fighting
ਹਉ ਤੁਮ ਸਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਚ ਕਹਿਓ ਤੁਮ ਜਉ ਜੀਯ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਅਉਰ ਬਿਚਾਰੋ ॥
hau tum siau har saach kahio tum jau jeey mai kachh aaur bichaaro |
“O Krishna! I am telling you the truth, but you are thinking something else in your mind
ਕੈ ਹਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਰੋ ਤਜਿ ਕੈ ਡਰ ਕੈ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਸਭ ਆਯੁਧ ਡਾਰੋ ॥੧੨੧੬॥
kai ham sang laro taj kai ddar kai apune sabh aayudh ddaaro |1216|
You may now either fight with me fearlessly or throw away all your weapons.1216.
ਆਜੁ ਆਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਹਨਿ ਹੋ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਤਨਾ ਕੋ ॥
aaj aayodhan mai tum ko han ho tumaree sabh hee pritanaa ko |
“I shall kill you and all your army today in the battlefield
ਜਉ ਰੇ ਕੋਊ ਤੁਮ ਮੈ ਭਟ ਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਆਵਤ ਹੈ ਬਿਧਿ ਆਹਵ ਜਾ ਕੋ ॥
jau re koaoo tum mai bhatt hai bahu aavat hai bidh aahav jaa ko |
If there is any heroic fighter amongst you and if someone knows the art of warfare, then he should come forward to fight with me
ਸੋ ਹਮਰੇ ਸੰਗ ਆਇ ਭਿਰੇ ਨ ਲਰੈ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਹੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ॥
so hamare sang aae bhire na larai paramesur kee sahu taa ko |
“I swear by God that I shall not fight with you
ਜੋ ਟਰਿ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਆਹਵ ਤੇ ਸੋਈ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਹੀ ਭਟ ਸ੍ਰਯਾਰ ਕਹਾ ਕੋ ॥੧੨੧੭॥
jo ttar hai ih aahav te soee singh nahee bhatt srayaar kahaa ko |1217|
If anyone recedes from this war, he will not be called a lion, but only a jackal.”1217.
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Aasaa, Kaafee, First Mehl, Eighth House, Ashtpadheeyaa:
ਜੈਸੇ ਗੋਇਲਿ ਗੋਇਲੀ ਤੈਸੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
jaise goeil goeilee taise sansaaraa |
As the shepherd is in the field for only a short time, so is one in the world.
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਾਂਧਹਿ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
koorr kamaaveh aadamee baandheh ghar baaraa |1|
Practicing falsehood, they build their homes. ||1||
ਜਾਗਹੁ ਜਾਗਹੁ ਸੂਤਿਹੋ ਚਲਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaagahu jaagahu sootiho chaliaa vanajaaraa |1| rahaau |
Wake up! Wake up! O sleepers, see that the travelling merchant is leaving. ||1||Pause||
ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਘਰ ਬਾਂਧੀਅਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਹਣਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
neet neet ghar baandheeeh je rahanaa hoee |
Go ahead and build your houses, if you think you will stay here forever and ever.
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਚਲਸੀ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥
pindd pavai jeeo chalasee je jaanai koee |2|
The body shall fall, and the soul shall depart; if only they knew this. ||2||
ਓਹੀ ਓਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਹੈ ਹੋਸੀ ਸੋਈ ॥
ohee ohee kiaa karahu hai hosee soee |
Why do you cry out and mourn for the dead? The Lord is, and shall always be.
ਤੁਮ ਰੋਵਹੁਗੇ ਓਸ ਨੋ ਤੁਮੑ ਕਉ ਕਉਣੁ ਰੋਈ ॥੩॥
tum rovahuge os no tuma kau kaun roee |3|
You mourn for that person, but who will mourn for you? ||3||
ਧੰਧਾ ਪਿਟਿਹੁ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਤੁਮੑ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
dhandhaa pittihu bhaaeeho tuma koorr kamaavahu |
You are engrossed in worldly entanglements, O Siblings of Destiny, and you are practicing falsehood.
ਓਹੁ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਕਤ ਹੀ ਤੁਮੑ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਵਹੁ ॥੪॥
ohu na sunee kat hee tuma lok sunaavahu |4|
The dead person does not hear anything at all; your cries are heard only by other people. ||4||
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਸੁਤਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਾਗਾਏ ਸੋਈ ॥
jis te sutaa naanakaa jaagaae soee |
Only the Lord, who causes the mortal to sleep, O Nanak, can awaken him again.
ਜੇ ਘਰੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਾਂ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥
je ghar boojhai aapanaa taan need na hoee |5|
One who understands his true home, does not sleep. ||5||
ਜੇ ਚਲਦਾ ਲੈ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
je chaladaa lai chaliaa kichh sanpai naale |
If the departing mortal can take his wealth with him,
ਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
taa dhan sanchahu dekh kai boojhahu beechaare |6|
then go ahead and gather wealth yourself. See this, reflect upon it, and understand. ||6||
ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਖਸੂਦੁ ਲੈਹੁ ਮਤ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੁ ॥
vanaj karahu makhasood laihu mat pachhotaavahu |
Make your deals, and obtain the true merchandise, or else you shall regret it later.
ਅਉਗਣ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਹੁ ਐਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਪਰਾਵਹੁ ॥੭॥
aaugan chhoddahu gun karahu aise tat paraavahu |7|
Abandon your vices, and practice virtue, and you shall obtain the essence of reality. ||7||
ਧਰਮੁ ਭੂਮਿ ਸਤੁ ਬੀਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਐਸੀ ਕਿਰਸ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
dharam bhoom sat beej kar aisee kiras kamaavahu |
Plant the seed of Truth in the soil of Dharmic faith, and practice such farming.
ਤਾਂ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਜਾਣੀਅਹੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥੮॥
taan vaapaaree jaaneeahu laahaa lai jaavahu |8|
Only then will you be known as a merchant, if you take your profits with you. ||8||
ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
karam hovai satigur milai boojhai beechaaraa |
If the Lord shows His Mercy, one meets the True Guru; contemplating Him, one comes to understand.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਾ ॥੯॥
naam vakhaanai sune naam naame biauhaaraa |9|
Then, one chants the Naam, hears the Naam, and deals only in the Naam. ||9||
ਜਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਤੋਟਾ ਤਿਵੈ ਵਾਟ ਚਲਦੀ ਆਈ ॥
jiau laahaa tottaa tivai vaatt chaladee aaee |
As is the profit, so is the loss; this is the way of the world.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਾਈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੦॥੧੩॥
jo tis bhaavai naanakaa saaee vaddiaaee |10|13|
Whatever pleases His Will, O Nanak, is glory for me. ||10||13||

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਢੂਢੀਆ ਕੋ ਨੀਮੑੀ ਮੈਡਾ ॥
chaare kunddaa dtoodteea ko neemaee maiddaa |
I have searched in the four directions, but no one is mine.
ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਹਉ ਤੈਡਾ ॥੧॥
je tudh bhaavai saahibaa too mai hau taiddaa |1|
If it pleases You, O Lord Master, then You are mine, and I am Yours. ||1||
ਦਰੁ ਬੀਭਾ ਮੈ ਨੀਮੑਿ ਕੋ ਕੈ ਕਰੀ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
dar beebhaa mai neema ko kai karee salaam |
There is no other door for me; where shall I go to worship?
ਹਿਕੋ ਮੈਡਾ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hiko maiddaa too dhanee saachaa mukh naam |1| rahaau |
You are my only Lord; Your True Name is in my mouth. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿਧਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ॥
sidhaa sevan sidh peer maageh ridh sidh |
Some serve the Siddhas, the beings of spiritual perfection, and some serve spiritual teachers; they beg for wealth and miraculous powers.
ਮੈ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਬੁਧਿ ॥੨॥
mai ik naam na veesarai saache gur budh |2|
May I never forget the Naam, the Name of the One Lord. This is the wisdom of the True Guru. ||2||
ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਕਾਪੜੀ ਕਿਆ ਭਵਹਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ॥
jogee bhogee kaaparree kiaa bhaveh disantar |
Why do the Yogis, the revellers, and the beggars wander in foreign lands?
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੑਹੀ ਤਤੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ॥੩॥
gur kaa sabad na cheenahee tat saar nirantar |3|
They do not understand the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and the essence of excellence within them. ||3||
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪਾਧੇ ਜੋਇਸੀ ਨਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥
panddit paadhe joeisee nit parrheh puraanaa |
The Pandits, the religious scholars, the teachers and astrologers, and those who endlessly read the Puraanas,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੑੀ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਲੁਕਾਣਾ ॥੪॥
antar vasat na jaananaee ghatt braham lukaanaa |4|
do not know what is within; God is hidden deep within them. ||4||
ਇਕਿ ਤਪਸੀ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਤਪੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
eik tapasee ban meh tap kareh nit teerath vaasaa |
Some penitents perform penance in the forests, and some dwell forever at sacred shrines.
ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਤਾਮਸੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
aap na cheeneh taamasee kaahe bhe udaasaa |5|
The unenlightened people do not understand themselves - why have they become renunciates? ||5||
ਇਕਿ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਦੇ ਸੇ ਜਤੀ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
eik bind jatan kar raakhade se jatee kahaaveh |
Some control their sexual energy, and are known as celibates.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਨ ਛੂਟਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥੬॥
bin gurasabad na chhoottahee bhram aaveh jaaveh |6|
But without the Guru's Word, they are not saved, and they wander in reincarnation. ||6||
ਇਕਿ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਾਧਿਕਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
eik girahee sevak saadhikaa guramatee laage |
Some are householders, servants, and seekers, attached to the Guru's Teachings.
ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁ ਜਾਗੇ ॥੭॥
naam daan isanaan drirr har bhagat su jaage |7|
They hold fast to the Naam, to charity, to cleansing and purification; they remain awake in devotion to the Lord. ||7||
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸੋ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ॥
gur te dar ghar jaaneeai so jaae siyaanai |
Through the Guru, the Gate of the Lord's Home is found, and that place is recognized.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੮॥੧੪॥
naanak naam na veesarai saache man maanai |8|14|
Nanak does not forget the Naam; his mind has surrendered to the True Lord. ||8||14||
