KUSMA BACCHITAR STANZA
ਤਿਨ ਬਨਬਾਸੀ ਰਘੁਬਰ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
tin banabaasee raghubar jaanai |
ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਸਮ ਕਰ ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
dukh sukh sam kar sukh dukh maanai |
“The people residing in the forest, know Raghuvir Ram and consider his suffering and comfort as their own.
ਬਲਕਲ ਧਰ ਕਰ ਅਬ ਬਨ ਜੈਹੈਂ ॥
balakal dhar kar ab ban jaihain |
ਰਘੁਪਤ ਸੰਗ ਹਮ ਬਨ ਫਲ ਖੈਹੈਂ ॥੨੭੭॥
raghupat sang ham ban fal khaihain |277|
“Now I shall wear the rind of the tree and go to the forest and shall eat the forest fruit with ram.”277.
ਇਮ ਕਹਾ ਬਚਨਾ ਘਰ ਬਰ ਛੋਰੇ ॥
eim kahaa bachanaa ghar bar chhore |
ਬਲਕਲ ਧਰਿ ਤਨ ਭੂਖਨ ਤੋਰੇ ॥
balakal dhar tan bhookhan tore |
Saying this Bharat left his home and breaking the ornaments he threw them away and wore the bark-peel.
ਅਵਧਿਸ ਜਾਰੇ ਅਵਧਹਿ ਛਾਡਯੋ ॥
avadhis jaare avadheh chhaaddayo |
ਰਘੁਪਤਿ ਪਗ ਤਰ ਕਰ ਘਰ ਮਾਡਿਯੋ ॥੨੭੮॥
raghupat pag tar kar ghar maaddiyo |278|
He performed the death ceremony of king Dasrath and left Oudh and concentrated on abiding at the feet of Ram.278.
ਲਖਿ ਜਲ ਥਲ ਕਹ ਤਜਿ ਕੁਲ ਧਾਏ ॥
lakh jal thal keh taj kul dhaae |
ਮਨੁ ਮਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੈ ਤਿਹ ਠਾ ਆਏ ॥
man man sang lai tih tthaa aae |
The forest-dwellers, seeing the strong army of Bharat, came alongwith the sages and reached the place where Ram was staying.
ਲਖਿ ਬਲ ਰਾਮੰ ਖਲ ਦਲ ਭੀਰੰ ॥
lakh bal raaman khal dal bheeran |
ਗਹਿ ਧਨ ਪਾਣੰ ਸਿਤ ਧਰ ਤੀਰੰ ॥੨੭੯॥
geh dhan paanan sit dhar teeran |279|
Seeing the strong force ram thought that some tyrants had come to attack, therefore he held the bow and arrows in his hands.279.
ਗਹਿ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਮੰ ਸਰ ਬਰ ਪੂਰੰ ॥
geh dhan raaman sar bar pooran |
ਅਰਬਰ ਥਹਰੇ ਖਲ ਦਲ ਸੂਰੰ ॥
arabar thahare khal dal sooran |
Ram taking his bow in his hand began to discharge arrow and seeing this Indra, sun etc. trembled with fear.
ਨਰ ਬਰ ਹਰਖੇ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਅਮਰੰ ॥
nar bar harakhe ghar ghar amaran |
ਅਮਰਰਿ ਧਰਕੇ ਲਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਮਰੰ ॥੨੮੦॥
amarar dharake leh kar samaran |280|
Seeing this the forest-dwellers felt pleased in their dwelling places, but the gods of Amarpura seeing this battle became anxious.280.
ਤਬ ਚਿਤ ਅਪਨੇ ਭਰਥਰ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
tab chit apane bharathar jaanee |
ਰਨ ਰੰਗ ਰਾਤੇ ਰਘੁਬਰ ਮਾਨੀ ॥
ran rang raate raghubar maanee |
Then Bharat reflected in his mind that ram was thinking of starting the battle,
ਦਲ ਬਲ ਤਜਿ ਕਰਿ ਇਕਲੇ ਨਿਸਰੇ ॥
dal bal taj kar ikale nisare |
ਰਘੁਬਰ ਨਿਰਖੇ ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਸਰੇ ॥੨੮੧॥
raghubar nirakhe sabh dukh bisare |281|
Therefore he left all his forces, went forward alone and seeing Ram all his sufferings ended.281.
ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਜਬ ਨਿਰਖੇ ਭਟ ਮਣ ਰਾਮੰ ॥
drig jab nirakhe bhatt man raaman |
ਸਿਰ ਧਰ ਟੇਕਯੰ ਤਜ ਕਰ ਕਾਮੰ ॥
sir dhar ttekayan taj kar kaaman |
When Bharat saw with his own eyes the mighty Ram, then abandoning all his desires, Bharat prostrated before him.
ਇਮ ਗਤਿ ਲਖਿ ਕਰ ਰਘੁਪਤਿ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
eim gat lakh kar raghupat jaanee |
ਭਰਥਰ ਆਏ ਤਜਿ ਰਜਧਾਨੀ ॥੨੮੨॥
bharathar aae taj rajadhaanee |282|
Seeing this, Ram realized that it was Bharat who had come leaving his capital.282.
ਰਿਪਹਾ ਨਿਰਖੇ ਭਰਥਰ ਜਾਨੇ ॥
ripahaa nirakhe bharathar jaane |
ਅਵਧਿਸ ਮੂਏ ਤਿਨ ਮਾਨ ਮਾਨੇ ॥
avadhis mooe tin maan maane |
Seeing Shatrughan and Bharat, Ram recognized them and it came into the mind of ram and Lakshman that king Dasrath had left this world
ਰਘੁਬਰ ਲਛਮਨ ਪਰਹਰ ਬਾਨੰ ॥
raghubar lachhaman parahar baanan |
ਗਿਰ ਤਰ ਆਏ ਤਜ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੰ ॥੨੮੩॥

They abandoned their arrow and effacing their displeasure came down from the mountain.283.
ਦਲ ਬਲ ਤਜਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਲ ਰੋਏ ॥
dal bal taj kar mil gal roe |
ਦੁਖ ਕਸਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਦੀਆ ਸੁਖ ਸਭ ਖੋਏ ॥
dukh kas bidh deea sukh sabh khoe |
Leaving the army aside they hugged each other and wept. The providence had given such agony that they had lost all comforts.
ਅਬ ਘਰ ਚਲੀਏ ਰਘੁਬਰ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
ab ghar chalee raghubar mere |
ਤਜਿ ਹਠਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਸਭ ਪਗ ਤੇਰੇ ॥੨੮੪॥
taj hatth laage sabh pag tere |284|
Bharat said, “O Rahguvir, abandon your persistence and return to your home, because for this very reason all the people had fallen at your feet.”284.

ਜਾਹ ਘਰੈ ਨ ਹਮੈ ਦੁਖ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
jaah gharai na hamai dukh deejai |
“O Bharat! do not be obstinate, go to your home, do not give me more anguish by staying here
ਰਾਜ ਕਹਯੋ ਜੁ ਹਮੈ ਹਮ ਮਾਨੀ ॥
raaj kahayo ju hamai ham maanee |
ਤ੍ਰਿਯੋਦਸ ਬਰਖ ਬਸੈ ਬਨ ਧਾਨੀ ॥੨੮੫॥
triyodas barakh basai ban dhaanee |285|
“Whatever permission has been given to me, I am acting according to that and accordingly I shall remain in the forest for thirteen years (and return in the fourteenth year).285.
ਤ੍ਰਿਯੋਦਸ ਬਰਖ ਬਿਤੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਐਹੈਂ ॥

ਰਾਜ ਸੰਘਾਸਨ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਹੈਹੈਂ ॥

“I shall return after thirteen years and sit on the throne under a canopy.
ਜਾਹੁ ਘਰੈ ਸਿਖ ਮਾਨ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
jaahu gharai sikh maan hamaaree |
ਰੋਵਤ ਤੋਰਿ ਉਤੈ ਮਹਤਾਰੀ ॥੨੮੬॥

“Listen to my instruction and return home, your mothers must be weeping there.”286.

ਲਾਜ ਨ ਲਾਗਤ ਰਾਮ ਕਹੋ ਮੁਹ ॥
laaj na laagat raam kaho muh |
“O Ram! where should I go now after touching your feet? Shall I not be ashmed?
ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਦੀਨ ਮਲੀਨ ਬਿਨਾ ਗਤ ॥
mai at deen maleen binaa gat |
ਰਾਖ ਲੈ ਰਾਜ ਬਿਖੈ ਚਰਨਾਮ੍ਰਿਤ ॥੨੮੭॥
raakh lai raaj bikhai charanaamrit |287|
“I am extremely low, dirty and motionless. O Ram! manage your kingdom and glorify it with your ambrosial feet.”287.
ਚਛ ਬਿਹੀਨ ਸੁਪਛ ਜਿਮੰ ਕਰ ॥
chachh biheen supachh jiman kar |
ਤਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੀਰ ਗਿਰਯੋ ਪਗ ਭਰਥਰ ॥
tiau prabh teer girayo pag bharathar |
Just as a bird become sightless fells down, in the same way Bharat fell down before Ram.
ਅੰਕ ਰਹੇ ਗਹ ਰਾਮ ਤਿਸੈ ਤਬ ॥
ank rahe geh raam tisai tab |
ਰੋਇ ਮਿਲੇ ਲਛਨਾਦਿ ਭਯਾ ਸਭ ॥੨੮੮॥
roe mile lachhanaad bhayaa sabh |288|
At the same time Ram hugged him to his bosom and there Lakshman and all the brother wept.288.
ਪਾਨਿ ਪੀਆਇ ਜਗਾਇ ਸੁ ਬੀਰਹ ॥
paan peeae jagaae su beerah |
ਫੇਰਿ ਕਹਯੋ ਹਸ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਬੀਰਹ ॥
fer kahayo has sree raghubeerah |
The brave Bharat was brought to his senses by giving water. Ram again said smilingly :
ਤ੍ਰਿਯੋਦਸ ਬਰਖ ਗਏ ਫਿਰਿ ਐਹੈ ॥
triyodas barakh ge fir aihai |
ਜਾਹੁ ਹਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਕਾਜ ਕਿਵੈਹੈ ॥੨੮੯॥
jaahu hamai kachh kaaj kivaihai |289|
“After the elapse of thirteen years we shall return, now you go back because I have to fulfil some tasks in the forest.”289.
ਚੀਨ ਗਏ ਚਤੁਰਾ ਚਿਤ ਮੋ ਸਭ ॥
cheen ge chaturaa chit mo sabh |
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਬੀਰ ਕਹੀ ਅਸ ਕੈ ਜਬ ॥
sree raghubeer kahee as kai jab |
When Ram said this, then all the people understood its substance (that he had to kill the demons in the forest).
ਮਾਤ ਸਮੋਧ ਸੁ ਪਾਵਰਿ ਲੀਨੀ ॥
maat samodh su paavar leenee |
ਅਉਰ ਬਸੇ ਪੁਰ ਅਉਧ ਨ ਚੀਨੀ ॥੨੯੦॥
aaur base pur aaudh na cheenee |290|
Submitting reverently to the instructions of Ram and with pleased mind Bharat took the sandals of Ram and forgetting the recognition of Ayodhya, he began to live out of its limits.290.
ਸੀਸ ਜਟਾਨ ਕੋ ਜੂਟ ਧਰੇ ਬਰ ॥

ਰਾਜ ਸਮਾਜ ਦੀਯੋ ਪਊਵਾ ਪਰ ॥
raaj samaaj deeyo paoovaa par |
Wearing matted hair on his head he dedicated all the royal task to those sandals.
ਰਾਜ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਹੋਤ ਉਜਿਆਰੈ ॥
raaj kare din hot ujiaarai |
ਰੈਨਿ ਭਏ ਰਘੁਰਾਜ ਸੰਭਾਰੈ ॥੨੯੧॥
rain bhe raghuraaj sanbhaarai |291|
During the day he used to fulfil his royal duties with the support of those sandals and during the night he protected them.291.
ਜਜਰ ਭਯੋ ਝੁਰ ਝੰਝਰ ਜਿਉ ਤਨ ॥
jajar bhayo jhur jhanjhar jiau tan |
ਰਾਖਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਰਾਜ ਬਿਖੈ ਮਨ ॥
raakhat sree raghuraaj bikhai man |
The body of Bharat withered and become decrepit, but still he always kept the memory of Ram in his mind.
ਬੈਰਿਨ ਕੇ ਰਨ ਬਿੰਦ ਨਿਕੰਦਤ ॥
bairin ke ran bind nikandat |
ਭਾਖਤ ਕੰਠਿ ਅਭੂਖਨ ਛੰਦਤ ॥੨੯੨॥

Alongwith this he destroyed the groups of enemies and instead of ornaments he wore rosaries as necklaces.292.

- receive the blessing of his darshan in the early light of dawn. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਅਭਾਗੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥

If you do not meditate on the Lord, it is your own misfortune.
ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Following the Guru's Teachings, the perfect humble beings meditate on the Lord.
ਤਿਤੁ ਘਟ ਅਨਹਤ ਬਾਜੇ ਤੂਰਾ ॥੨॥
tit ghatt anahat baaje tooraa |2|
Within their hearts, the unstruck melody vibrates. ||2||
ਜੋ ਜਨ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
jo jan raam bhagat har piaar |
Those who worship the Lord and love the Lord
ਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
se prabh raakhe kirapaa dhaar |3|
- showering His Mercy, God protects them. ||3||
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
jin kai hiradai har har soee |
Those whose hearts are filled with the Lord, Har, Har
ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਦਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
tin kaa daras paras sukh hoee |4|
- gazing upon the blessed vision of their darshan, peace is obtained. ||4||
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਰਵੈ ॥
sarab jeea meh eko ravai |
Among all beings, the One Lord is pervading.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਭਵੈ ॥੫॥
manamukh ahankaaree fir joonee bhavai |5|
The eogtistical, self-willed manmukhs wander in reincarnation. ||5||
ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
so boojhai jo satigur paae |
They alone understand, who have found the True Guru.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੇ ਪਾਏ ॥੬॥
haumai maare gurasabade paae |6|
Subduing their ego, they receive the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||6||
ਅਰਧ ਉਰਧ ਕੀ ਸੰਧਿ ਕਿਉ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
aradh uradh kee sandh kiau jaanai |
How can anyone know of the Union between the being below and the Supreme Being above?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੰਧਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੭॥
guramukh sandh milai man maanai |7|
The Gurmukhs obtain this Union; their minds are reconciliated. ||7||
ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਗੁਣੁ ਕਰੀਐ ॥
ham paapee niragun kau gun kareeai |
I am a worthless sinner, without merit. What merit do I have?
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਤਰੀਐ ॥੮॥੧੬॥
prabh hoe deaal naanak jan tareeai |8|16|
When God showers His Mercy, servant Nanak is emancipated. ||8||16||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਜਿਉ ਗਾਈ ਕਉ ਗੋਇਲੀ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਰਾ ॥
jiau gaaee kau goeilee raakheh kar saaraa |
As the dairy farmer watches over and protects his cows, so does the Lord cherish and protect us, night and day. He blesses the soul with peace. ||1||
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪਾਲਹਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹਿ ਆਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
ahinis paaleh raakh lehi aatam sukh dhaaraa |1|
Please protect me here and hereafter, O Lord, Merciful to the meek.
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
eit ut raakhahu deen deaalaa |
I seek Your Sanctuary; please bless me with Your Glance of Grace. ||1||Pause||
ਤਉ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tau saranaagat nadar nihaalaa |1| rahaau |
Wherever I look, there You are. Save me, O Savior Lord!
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੇ ਰਖੁ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
jeh dekhau teh rav rahe rakh raakhanahaaraa |
You are the Giver, and You are the Enjoyer;
ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
toon daataa bhugataa toonhai toon praan adhaaraa |2|
You are the Support of the breath of life. ||2||
ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਅਧ ਊਰਧੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
kirat peaa adh aooradhee bin giaan beechaaraa |
According to the karma of past actions, people descend to the depths or rise to the heights, unless they contemplate spiritual wisdom.
ਬਿਨੁ ਉਪਮਾ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥੩॥
bin upamaa jagadees kee binasai na andhiaaraa |3|
Without the Praises of the Lord of the Universe, the darkness is not dispelled. ||3||
ਜਗੁ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਲੋਭੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
jag binasat ham dekhiaa lobhe ahankaaraa |
I have seen the world being destroyed by greed and egotism.
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥
gur sevaa prabh paaeaa sach mukat duaaraa |4|
Only by serving the Guru is God obtained, and the true gate of liberation found. ||4||
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਅਪਾਰ ਕੋ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
nij ghar mehal apaar ko aparanpar soee |
The Mansion of the Infinite Lord's Presence is within the home of one's own being. He is beyond any boundaries.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥
bin sabadai thir ko nahee boojhai sukh hoee |5|
Without the Word of the Shabad, nothing shall endure. Through understanding, peace is obtained. ||5||
ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਲੇ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਆ ਫਾਸਹਿ ਜਮ ਜਾਲਾ ॥
kiaa lai aaeaa le jaae kiaa faaseh jam jaalaa |
What have you brought, and what will you take away, when you are caught by the noose of Death?
ਡੋਲੁ ਬਧਾ ਕਸਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਆਕਾਸਿ ਪਤਾਲਾ ॥੬॥
ddol badhaa kas jevaree aakaas pataalaa |6|
Like the bucket tied to the rope in the well, you are pulled up to the Akaashic Ethers, and then lowered down to the nether regions of the underworld. ||6||
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
guramat naam na veesarai sahaje pat paaeeai |
Follow the Guru's Teachings, and do not forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord; you shall automatically obtain honor.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੭॥
antar sabad nidhaan hai mil aap gavaaeeai |7|
Deep within the self is the treasure of the Shabad; it is obtained only by eradicating selfishness and conceit. ||7||
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਣੀ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
nadar kare prabh aapanee gun ank samaavai |
When God bestows His Glance of Grace, people settle in the Lap of the Virtuous Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੧॥੧੭॥
naanak mel na chookee laahaa sach paavai |8|1|17|
O Nanak, this Union cannot be broken; the true profit is obtained. ||8||1||17||
