DOHRA

ਜਿਹ ਚਾਹੇ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਹਨੇ ਜੋ ਬਾਛੈ ਸੋ ਲੇਇ ॥

jih chaahe taa ko hane jo baachhai so lee |

Whomsoever (Ajai Singh) wants he kills him, whatever he desires, he gets.

ਜਿਹ ਰਾਖੈ ਸੋਈ ਰਹੈ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਿਹ ਦੇਇ ॥੧੩॥੨੫੦॥

jih raakhai soee rahai jih jaanai tih dee |13|250|

Whomsoever he protects, he remains safe, and whosoever he considers protagonist, he bestows on him the desired position.13.250.

ਐਸੀ ਭਾਤ ਕੀਨੋ ਇਹ ਜਬ ਹੀ ॥

aisee bhaat keeno ih jab hee |

When he began such a treatment,

ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਲੋਕ ਸਭ ਬਸ ਭਏ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥

prajaa lok sabh bas bhe tab hee |

All the subject with this, came under his control

ਅਉ ਬਸਿ ਹੋਇ ਗਏ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸਾ ॥

aau bas hoe ge neb khavaasaa |

And the chieftains and other prominent persons came under his control,

ਜੋ ਰਾਖਤ ਥੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ॥੧॥੨੫੧॥

jo raakhat the nrip kee aasaa |1|251|

Who had earlier owned allegiance to the king.1.251.

ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਤਿਹੂੰ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਸੁਜਾਨਾ ॥

ek divas tihoon bhraat sujaanaa |

One day all the three sagacious brothers,

ਮੰਡਸ ਚੌਪਰ ਖੇਲ ਖਿਲਾਨਾ ॥

manddas chauapar khel khilaanaa |

Began to play chess.

ਦਾਉ ਸਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਰਿਸਕ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਓ ॥

daau samai kachh risak bichaario |

When the dice was thrown, (one of the two real brothers) thought in indignation,

ਅਜੈ ਸੁਨਤ ਇਹ ਭਾਤ ਉਚਾਰਿਓ ॥੨॥੨੫੨॥

ajai sunat ih bhaat uchaario |2|252|

And uttered these words, while Ajai listened.2.252.

ਕਹਾ ਕਰੈ ਦਾ ਕਹ ਪਰੈ ਕਹ ਯਹ ਬਾਧੈ ਸੂਤ ॥

kahaa karai daa keh parai keh yeh baadhai soot |

Let us see, what he does how doth he throw the dice how shalt he keep the propriety of conduct?

ਕਹਾ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਯਾ ਤੇ ਮਰੈ ਜੋ ਰਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਪੂਤ ॥੩॥੨੫੩॥

kahaa satru yaa te marai jo rajeea kaa poot |3|253|

How shalt the enemy be killed by him, who himself is the son of maid-servant?3.253.

CHAUPI

ਯਹੈ ਆਜ ਹਮ ਖੇਲ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥

yahai aaj ham khel bichaaree |

We have thought about this game to-day.

ਸੋ ਭਾਖਤ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਪੁਕਾਰੀ ॥

so bhaakhat hai pragatt pukaaree |

That we utter apparently.

ਏਕਹਿ ਰਤਨ ਰਾਜ ਧਨੁ ਲੀਨਾ ॥

ekeh ratan raaj dhan leenaa |

One of them took the gems of the kingdom.

ਦੁਤੀਐ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਉਸਟ ਗਜ ਲੀਨਾ ॥੧॥੨੫੪॥

duteeai asv usatt gaj leenaa |1|254|

The second one took horses, camels and elephants.1.254.

ਕੁਅਰੈ ਬਾਟ ਸੈਨ ਸਭ ਲੀਆ ॥

kuarai baatt sain sabh leea |

The princes distributed all the forces.

ਤੀਨਹੁ ਬਾਟ ਤੀਨ ਕਰ ਕੀਆ ॥

teenahu baatt teen kar keea |

The divided the army in three parts.

ਪਾਸਾ ਢਾਰ ਧਰੈ ਕਸ ਦਾਵਾ ॥

paasaa dtaar dharai kas daavaa |

They thought, how the dice be cast and the rouse be played?

ਕਹਾ ਖੇਲ ਧੌ ਕਰੈ ਕਰਾਵਾ ॥੨॥੨੫੫॥

kahaa khel dhau karai karaavaa |2|255|

How the game and trick be played?2.255.

ਚਉਪਰ ਖੇਲ ਪਰੀ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਹਾ ॥

chaupar khel paree tih maahaa |

The game of dice was began to watch the play.

ਦੇਖਤ ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਨਰ ਨਾਹਾ ॥

dekhat aooch neech nar naahaa |

The high and low all began to watch the play

ਜ੍ਵਾਲਾ ਰੂਪ ਸੁਪਰਧਾ ਬਾਢੀ ॥

jvaalaa roop suparadhaa baadtee |

The fire of jealousy increased in their hearts,

ਭੂਪਨ ਫਿਰਤ ਸੰਘਾਰਤ ਕਾਢੀ ॥੩॥੨੫੬॥

bhoopan firat sanghaarat kaadtee |3|256|

Which is said to be the destroyer of the kings.3.256.

ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਬੀਚ ਪਰੀ ਅਸ ਖੇਲਾ ॥

tin kai beech paree as khelaa |

The game was played thus amongst them,

ਕਟਨ ਸੁ ਹਿਤ ਭਇਉ ਮਿਟਨ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥

kattan su hit bheiau mittan duhelaa |

That they reached the stage of destroying one another and it was difficult to pacify them.

ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੈ ਰਤਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਬ ਬਹੁ ਲਾਯੋ ॥

prithamai ratan drib bahu laayo |

In the beginning the princes put the gems and wealth to stake

ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਾਜ ਗਜ ਬਹੁਤ ਹਰਾਯੋ ॥੪॥੨੫੭॥

basatr baaj gaj bahut haraayo |4|257|

Then they bet the clothes, horses and elephants, they lost all.4.257.

ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨ ਬੀਚ ਸੁਪਰਧਾ ਬਾਢਾ ॥

duhoonan beech suparadhaa baadtaa |

The wrangling increased on both the sides.

ਦੁਹ ਦਿਸ ਉਠੇ ਸੁਭਟ ਅਸ ਕਾਢਾ ॥

duh dis utthe subhatt as kaadtaa |

On both the sides, the warriors drew their swords

ਚਮਕਹਿ ਕਹੂੰ ਅਸਨ ਕੀ ਧਾਰਾ ॥

chamakeh kahoon asan kee dhaaraa |

The sharp edges of the swords glistened,

ਬਿਛ ਗਈ ਲੋਥ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੫॥੨੫੮॥

bichh gee loth anek apaaraa |5|258|

And many corpses lay scattered there.5.258.

ਜੁਗਨ ਦੈਤ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਹਰਿਖਾਨੇ ॥

jugan dait fireh harikhaane |

The vamps and demons wandered with pleasure

ਗੀਧ ਸਿਵਾ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੇ ॥

geedh sivaa boleh abhimaane |

The vultures and ganas of Shiva manifested their pride through their gay voices.

ਭੂਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਨਾਚਹਿ ਅਰੁ ਗਾਵਹਿ ॥

bhoot pret naacheh ar gaaveh |

The ghosts and goblins danced and sang.

ਕਹੂੰ ਕਹੂੰ ਸਬਦ ਬੈਤਾਲ ਸੁਨਾਵਹਿ ॥੬॥੨੫੯॥

kahoon kahoon sabad baitaal sunaaveh |6|259|

Somewhere the Baitals raised their voice.6.259.

ਚਮਕਤ ਕਹੂੰ ਖਗਨ ਕੀ ਧਾਰਾ ॥

chamakat kahoon khagan kee dhaaraa |

Somewhere the sharp edges of the swords gleamed.

ਬਿਥ ਗਏ ਰੁੰਡ ਭਸੁੰਡ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

bith ge rundd bhasundd apaaraa |

The heads of warriors and trunks of elephants lay scattered on the earth.

ਚਿੰਸਤ ਕਹੂੰ ਗਿਰੇ ਗਜ ਮਾਤੇ ॥

chinsat kahoon gire gaj maate |

Somewhere the intoxicated elephants were trumpeting after having fallen.

ਸੋਵਤ ਕਹੂੰ ਸੁਭਟ ਰਣ ਤਾਤੇ ॥੭॥੨੬੦॥

sovat kahoon subhatt ran taate |7|260|

Somewhere the furious warriors in the battlefield rolled down.7.260.

ਹਿੰਸਤ ਕਹੂੰ ਗਿਰੇ ਹੈ ਘਾਏ ॥

hinsat kahoon gire hai ghaae |

Somewhere the wounded horses have fallen and are neighing.

ਸੋਵਤ ਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਸਲੋਕ ਪਠਾਏ ॥

sovat kraoor salok patthaae |

Somewhere the terrible warriors are lying down they have been sent.

ਕਟਿ ਗਏ ਕਹੂੰ ਕਉਚ ਅਰੁ ਚਰਮਾ ॥

katt ge kahoon kauch ar charamaa |

Someone’s armour was cut down and someone’s was broken.

ਕਟਿ ਗਏ ਗਜ ਬਾਜਨ ਕੇ ਬਰਮਾ ॥੮॥੨੬੧॥

katt ge gaj baajan ke baramaa |8|261|

Somewhere the armours of elephants and horses were cut down.8.261.

ਜੁਗਨ ਦੇਤ ਕਹੂੰ ਕਿਲਕਾਰੀ ॥

jugan det kahoon kilakaaree |

Somewhere the vamps were raising joyful shrieks

ਨਾਚਤ ਭੂਤ ਬਜਾਵਤ ਤਾਰੀ ॥

naachat bhoot bajaavat taaree |

Somewhere the ghosts were dancing, while clapping their hands

ਬਾਵਨ ਬੀਰ ਫਿਰੈ ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰਾ ॥

baavan beer firai chahoon oraa |

The fifty-two heroic spirits were wandering in all the four directions

ਬਾਜਤ ਮਾਰੂ ਰਾਗ ਸਿਦਉਰਾ ॥੯॥੨੬੨॥

baajat maaroo raag sidauraa |9|262|

Maru musical mode was being played.9.262.

ਰਣ ਅਸ ਕਾਲ ਜਲਧ ਜਿਮ ਗਾਜਾ ॥

ran as kaal jaladh jim gaajaa |

The war was waged so violently as if the ocean was thundering

ਭੂਤ ਪਿਸਾਚ ਭੀਰ ਭੈ ਭਾਜਾ ॥

bhoot pisaach bheer bhai bhaajaa |

The gathering of ghosts and goblins ran away in great feat.

ਰਣ ਮਾਰੂ ਇਹ ਦਿਸ ਤੇ ਬਾਜ︀ਯੋ ॥

ran maaroo ih dis te baajayo |

The Maru Raga was played from this side,

ਕਾਇਰੁ ਹੁਤੋ ਸੋ ਭੀ ਨਹਿ ਭਾਜ︀ਯੋ ॥੧੦॥੨੬੩॥

kaaeir huto so bhee neh bhaajayo |10|263|

Which made even the cowards so courageous that they did not run away form the battlefield.10.263.

ਰਹਿ ਗਈ ਸੂਰਨ ਖਗ ਕੀ ਟੇਕਾ ॥

reh gee sooran khag kee ttekaa |

The support of the sword remained only with the warriors.

ਕਟਿ ਗਏ ਸੁੰਡ ਭਸੁੰਡ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥

katt ge sundd bhasundd anekaa |

The trunks of many elephants were chopped off.

ਨਾਚਤ ਜੋਗਨ ਕਹੂੰ ਬਿਤਾਰਾ ॥

naachat jogan kahoon bitaaraa |

Somewhere the vamps and Baitals danced.

ਧਾਵਤ ਭੂਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਬਿਕਰਾਰਾ ॥੧੧॥੨੬੪॥

dhaavat bhoot pret bikaraaraa |11|264|

Somewhere the terrible ghosts and goblins were running here and there.11.264.

ਧਾਵਤ ਅਧ ਕਮਧ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥

dhaavat adh kamadh anekaa |

Many trunks cut into halves were running.

ਮੰਡਿ ਰਹੇ ਰਾਵਤ ਗਡਿ ਟੇਕਾ ॥

mandd rahe raavat gadd ttekaa |

The princes were fighting and were stabilizing their positions.

ਅਨਹਦ ਰਾਗ ਅਨਾਹਦ ਬਾਜਾ ॥

anahad raag anaahad baajaa |

The musical modes were played with such intensity,

ਕਾਇਰੁ ਹੁਤਾ ਵਹੈ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਜਾ ॥੧੨॥੨੬੫॥

kaaeir hutaa vahai nahee bhaajaa |12|265|

That even the cowards did not run away from the field.12.265.

ਮੰਦਰ ਤੂਰ ਕਰੂਰ ਕਰੋਰਾ ॥

mandar toor karoor karoraa |

Million of drums and musical instruments sounded.

ਗਾਜ ਸਰਾਵਤ ਰਾਗ ਸੰਦੋਰਾ ॥

gaaj saraavat raag sandoraa |

The elephants also joined this music with their trumpets.

ਝਮਕਸਿ ਦਾਮਨ ਜਿਮ ਕਰਵਾਰਾ ॥

jhamakas daaman jim karavaaraa |

The swords gleamed like lightning,

ਬਰਸਤ ਬਾਨਨ ਮੇਘ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੧੩॥੨੬੬॥

barasat baanan megh apaaraa |13|266|

And the shafts came like rain from clouds.13.266.

ਘੂਮਹਿ ਘਾਇਲ ਲੋਹ ਚੁਚਾਤੇ ॥

ghoomeh ghaaeil loh chuchaate |

The wounded warriors with dripping blood revolved,

ਖੇਲ ਬਸੰਤ ਮਨੋ ਮਦ ਮਾਤੇ ॥

khel basant mano mad maate |

As if the intoxicated persons are playing Holi.

ਗਿਰ ਗਏ ਕਹੂੰ ਜਿਰਹ ਅਰੁ ਜੁਆਨਾ ॥

gir ge kahoon jirah ar juaanaa |

Somewhere the armour and the warriors had fallen

ਗਰਜਨ ਗਿਧ ਪੁਕਾਰਤ ਸੁਆਨਾ ॥੧੪॥੨੬੭॥

garajan gidh pukaarat suaanaa |14|267|

Somewhere the vultures shrieked and the dogs barked.14.267.

ਉਨ ਦਲ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਭਾਇਨ ਕੋ ਭਾਜਾ ॥

aun dal duhoon bhaaein ko bhaajaa |

The forces of both the brothers ran helter and skelter.

ਠਾਢ ਨ ਸਕਿਯੋ ਰੰਕੁ ਅਰੁ ਰਾਜਾ ॥

tthaadt na sakiyo rank ar raajaa |

No pauper and king could stand there (before Ajai Singh).

ਤਕਿਓ ਓਡਛਾ ਦੇਸੁ ਬਿਚਛਨ ॥

takio oddachhaa des bichachhan |

The running kings with their forces entered the beautiful country of Orissa,

ਰਾਜਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਤਿਲਕ ਸੁਭ ਲਛਨ ॥੧੫॥੨੬੮॥

raajaa nripat tilak subh lachhan |15|268|

Whose king ‘Tilak’ was a person of good qualities.15.268.

ਮਦ ਕਰਿ ਮਤ ਭਏ ਜੇ ਰਾਜਾ ॥

mad kar mat bhe je raajaa |

The kings who get intoxicated with wine,

ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਗਏ ਐਸ ਹੀ ਕਾਜਾ ॥

tin ke ge ais hee kaajaa |

All their errands are destroyed like this.

ਛੀਨ ਛਾਨ ਛਿਤ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਫਿਰਾਯੋ ॥

chheen chhaan chhit chhatr firaayo |

(Ajai Singh) sezed the kingdom and held the canopy on his head.

ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਆਪਹੀ ਕਹਾਯੋ ॥੧੬॥੨੬੯॥

mahaaraaj aapahee kahaayo |16|269|

He caused himself to be called Maharaja.16.269.

ਆਗੇ ਚਲੇ ਅਸ੍ਵਮੇਧ ਹਾਰਾ ॥

aage chale asvamedh haaraa |

The defeated Asumedh was running in front,

ਧਵਹਿ ਪਾਛੇ ਫਉਜ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

dhaveh paachhe fauj apaaraa |

And the great army was pursuing him.

ਗੇ ਜਹਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਤਿਲਕ ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ॥

ge jeh nripat tilak mahaaraajaa |

Asumedh went to the kingdom of Maharaja Tilak,

ਰਾਜ ਪਾਟ ਵਾਹੂ ਕਉ ਛਾਜਾ ॥੧੭॥੨੭੦॥

raaj paatt vaahoo kau chhaajaa |17|270|

Who was a most appropriate king.17.270.

ਤਹਾ ਇਕ ਆਹਿ ਸਨਉਢੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਨ ॥

tahaa ik aaeh snaudtee brahaman |

There lived a Sanaudhi Brahmin.

ਪੰਡਤ ਬਡੇ ਮਹਾ ਬਡ ਗੁਨ ਜਨ ॥

panddat badde mahaa badd gun jan |

He was a very great Pundit and had many great qualities.

ਭੂਪਹਿ ਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਸਭਹੁ ਕੀ ਪੂਜਾ ॥

bhoopeh ko gur sabhahu kee poojaa |

He was the preceptor of the king and all worshiped him.

ਤਿਹ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਮਾਨਹਿ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧੮॥੨੭੧॥

tih bin avar na maaneh doojaa |18|271|

None other was abored there.18.271.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

salok mahalaa 1 |

Salok, First Mehl:

ਖਤਿਅਹੁ ਜੰਮੇ ਖਤੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਤ ਖਤਿਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

khatiahu jame khate karan ta khatiaa vich paeh |

Born because of the karma of their past mistakes, they make more mistakes, and fall into mistakes.

ਧੋਤੇ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਣ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

dhote mool na utareh je sau dhovan paeh |

By washing, their pollution is not removed, even though they may wash hundreds of times.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੇ ਬਖਸੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਤ ਪਾਹੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

naanak bakhase bakhaseeeh naeh ta paahee paeh |1|

O Nanak, if God forgives, they are forgiven; otherwise, they are kicked and beaten. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਝਖਣਾ ਦੁਖ ਛਡਿ ਮੰਗੀਅਹਿ ਸੁਖ ॥

naanak bolan jhakhanaa dukh chhadd mangeeeh sukh |

O Nanak, it is absurd to ask to be spared from pain by begging for comfort.

ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੁਇ ਦਰਿ ਕਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਮਨੁਖ ॥

sukh dukh due dar kaparre pahireh jaae manukh |

Pleasure and pain are the two garments given, to be worn in the Court of the Lord.

ਜਿਥੈ ਬੋਲਣਿ ਹਾਰੀਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਚੰਗੀ ਚੁਪ ॥੨॥

jithai bolan haareeai tithai changee chup |2|

Where you are bound to lose by speaking, there, you ought to remain silent. ||2||

Pauree:

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਅੰਦਰੁ ਭਾਲਿਆ ॥

chaare kunddaa dekh andar bhaaliaa |

After looking around in the four directions, I looked within my own self.

ਸਚੈ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਅਲਖਿ ਸਿਰਜਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥

sachai purakh alakh siraj nihaaliaa |

There, I saw the True, Invisible Lord Creator.

ਉਝੜਿ ਭੁਲੇ ਰਾਹ ਗੁਰਿ ਵੇਖਾਲਿਆ ॥

aujharr bhule raah gur vekhaaliaa |

I was wandering in the wilderness, but now the Guru has shown me the Way.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਚੇ ਵਾਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲਿਆ ॥

satigur sache vaahu sach samaaliaa |

Hail to the True, True Guru, through whom we merge in the Truth.

ਪਾਇਆ ਰਤਨੁ ਘਰਾਹੁ ਦੀਵਾ ਬਾਲਿਆ ॥

paaeaa ratan gharaahu deevaa baaliaa |

I have found the jewel within the home of my own self; the lamp within has been lit.

ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਸਚ ਵਾਲਿਆ ॥

sachai sabad salaeh sukhee sach vaaliaa |

Those who praise the True Word of the Shabad, abide in the peace of Truth.

ਨਿਡਰਿਆ ਡਰੁ ਲਗਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਸਿ ਗਾਲਿਆ ॥

niddariaa ddar lag garab si gaaliaa |

But those who do not have the Fear of God, are overtaken by fear. They are destroyed by their own pride.

ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲਾ ਜਗੁ ਫਿਰੈ ਬੇਤਾਲਿਆ ॥੨੪॥

naavahu bhulaa jag firai betaaliaa |24|

Having forgotten the Name, the world is roaming around like a wild demon. ||24||

Salok, Third Mehl:

ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਭੈ ਮਰੈ ਭੀ ਭਉ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

bhai vich jamai bhai marai bhee bhau man meh hoe |

In fear we are born, and in fear we die. Fear is always present in the mind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

bhai vin jeevai bahut bahut khuseea khusee kamaae |

Without the fear of God, you may live very, very long, and savor the most enjoyable pleasures.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

naanak bhai vin je marai muhi kaalai utth jaae |2|

O Nanak, if you die without the fear of God, you will arise and depart with a blackened face. ||2||

When the True Guru is merciful, then your desires will be fulfilled.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਝੂਰੀਐ ॥

satigur hoe deaal na kabahoon jhooreeai |

When the True Guru is merciful, you will never grieve.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥

satigur hoe deaal taa dukh na jaaneeai |

When the True Guru is merciful, you will know no pain.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣੀਐ ॥

satigur hoe deaal taa har rang maaneeai |

When the True Guru is merciful, you will enjoy the Lord's Love.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ॥

When the True Guru is merciful, then why should you fear death?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਹਾ ॥

satigur hoe deaal taa sad hee sukh dehaa |

When the True Guru is merciful, the body is always at peace.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

satigur hoe deaal taa nav nidh paaeeai |

When the True Guru is merciful, the nine treasures are obtained.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੨੫॥

satigur hoe deaal ta sach samaaeeai |25|

When the True Guru is merciful, you shall be absorbed in the True Lord. ||25||

Salok, First Mehl:

ਸਿਰੁ ਖੋਹਾਇ ਪੀਅਹਿ ਮਲਵਾਣੀ ਜੂਠਾ ਮੰਗਿ ਮੰਗਿ ਖਾਹੀ ॥

sir khohaae peeeh malavaanee jootthaa mang mang khaahee |

They pluck the hair out of their heads, and drink in filthy water; they beg endlessly and eat the garbage which others have thrown away.

ਫੋਲਿ ਫਦੀਹਤਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਲੈਨਿ ਭੜਾਸਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਸਗਾਹੀ ॥

fol fadeehat muhi lain bharraasaa paanee dekh sagaahee |

They spread manure, they suck in rotting smells, and they are afraid of clean water.

ਭੇਡਾ ਵਾਗੀ ਸਿਰੁ ਖੋਹਾਇਨਿ ਭਰੀਅਨਿ ਹਥ ਸੁਆਹੀ ॥

bheddaa vaagee sir khohaaein bhareean hath suaahee |

Their hands are smeared with ashes, and the hair on their heads is plucked out-they are like sheep!

ਮਾਊ ਪੀਊ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਗਵਾਇਨਿ ਟਬਰ ਰੋਵਨਿ ਧਾਹੀ ॥

maaoo peeaoo kirat gavaaein ttabar rovan dhaahee |

They have renounced the lifestyle of their mothers and fathers, and their families and relatives cry out in distress.

ਓਨਾ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਨ ਪਤਲਿ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਨ ਦੀਵਾ ਮੁਏ ਕਿਥਾਊ ਪਾਹੀ ॥

onaa pindd na patal kiriaa na deevaa mue kithaaoo paahee |

No one offers the rice dishes at their last rites, and no one lights the lamps for them. After their death, where will they be sent?

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਨਿ ਨ ਢੋਈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਹੀ ॥

atthasatth teerath den na dtoee brahaman an na khaahee |

The sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage give them no place of protection, and no Brahmin will eat their food.

ਸਦਾ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਥੈ ਟਿਕੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

sadaa kucheel raheh din raatee mathai ttike naahee |

They remain polluted forever, day and night; they do not apply the ceremonial tilak mark to their foreheads.

ਝੁੰਡੀ ਪਾਇ ਬਹਨਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਮਰਣੈ ਦੜਿ ਦੀਬਾਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ॥

jhunddee paae behan nit maranai darr deebaan na jaahee |

They sit together in silence, as if in mourning; they do not go to the Lord's Court.

ਲਕੀ ਕਾਸੇ ਹਥੀ ਫੁੰਮਣ ਅਗੋ ਪਿਛੀ ਜਾਹੀ ॥

lakee kaase hathee funman ago pichhee jaahee |

With their begging bowls hanging from their waists, and their fly-brushes in their hands, they walk along in single file.

ਨਾ ਓਇ ਜੋਗੀ ਨਾ ਓਇ ਜੰਗਮ ਨਾ ਓਇ ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁੰਲਾ ॥

naa oe jogee naa oe jangam naa oe kaajee munlaa |

They are not Yogis, and they are not Jangams, followers of Shiva. They are not Qazis or Mullahs.

ਦਯਿ ਵਿਗੋਏ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਫਿਟਾ ਵਤੈ ਗਲਾ ॥

day vigoe fireh vigute fittaa vatai galaa |

Ruined by the Merciful Lord, they wander around in disgrace, and their entire troop is contaminated.

ਜੀਆ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਸੋਈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਰਖੈ ॥

jeea maar jeevaale soee avar na koee rakhai |

The Lord alone kills and restores to life; no one else can protect anyone from Him.

ਦਾਨਹੁ ਤੈ ਇਸਨਾਨਹੁ ਵੰਜੇ ਭਸੁ ਪਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਖੁਥੈ ॥

daanahu tai isanaanahu vanje bhas pee sir khuthai |

They go without giving alms or any cleansing baths; their shaven heads become covered with dust.

ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਰਤਨ ਉਪੰਨੇ ਮੇਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਮਾਧਾਣੀ ॥

paanee vichahu ratan upane mer keea maadhaanee |

The jewel emerged from the water, when the mountain of gold was used to churn it.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਵੀ ਥਾਪੇ ਪੁਰਬੀ ਲਗੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

atthasatth teerath devee thaape purabee lagai baanee |

The gods established the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, where the festivals are celebrated and hymns are chanted.

ਨਾਇ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਨਾਤੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਨਾਵਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਜਾਣੀ ॥

naae nivaajaa naatai poojaa naavan sadaa sujaanee |

After bathing, the Muslims recite their prayers, and after bathing, the Hindus perform their worship services. The wise always take cleansing baths.

ਮੁਇਆ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਾਂ ਸਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਾਣੀ ॥

mueaa jeevadiaa gat hovai jaan sir paaeeai paanee |

At the time of death, and at the time of birth, they are purified, when water is poured on their heads.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰਖੁਥੇ ਸੈਤਾਨੀ ਏਨਾ ਗਲ ਨ ਭਾਣੀ ॥

naanak sirakhuthe saitaanee enaa gal na bhaanee |

O Nanak, the shaven-headed ones are devils. They are not pleased to hear these words.

ਵੁਠੈ ਹੋਇਐ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਜੀਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

vutthai hoeiai hoe bilaaval jeea jugat samaanee |

When it rains, there is happiness. Water is the key to all life.

ਵੁਠੈ ਅੰਨੁ ਕਮਾਦੁ ਕਪਾਹਾ ਸਭਸੈ ਪੜਦਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

vutthai an kamaad kapaahaa sabhasai parradaa hovai |

When it rains, the corn grows, and the sugar cane, and the cotton, which provides clothing for all.

ਵੁਠੈ ਘਾਹੁ ਚਰਹਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਸੁਰਹੀ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਦਹੀ ਵਿਲੋਵੈ ॥

vutthai ghaahu chareh nit surahee saa dhan dahee vilovai |

When it rains, the cows always have grass to graze upon, and housewives can churn the milk into butter.

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਿਇ ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਸਦ ਪੂਜਾ ਪਇਐ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥

tit ghie hom jag sad poojaa peiai kaaraj sohai |

With that ghee, sacred feasts and worship services are performed; all these efforts are blessed.

ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਨਦੀ ਸਭਿ ਸਿਖੀ ਨਾਤੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

guroo samund nadee sabh sikhee naatai jit vaddiaaee |

The Guru is the ocean, and all His Teachings are the river. Bathing within it, glorious greatness is obtained.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਸਿਰਖੁਥੇ ਨਾਵਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾ ਸਤ ਚਟੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥

naanak je sirakhuthe naavan naahee taa sat chatte sir chhaaee |1|

O Nanak, if the shaven-headed ones do not bathe, then seven handfuls of ashes are upon their heads. ||1||
