ਅਸੁਮੇਧ ਅਰੁ ਅਸਮੇਦਹਾਰਾ ॥

Asumedh and Asumedhan (the sons of Janmeja),
ਮਹਾ ਸੂਰ ਸਤਵਾਨ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
mahaa soor satavaan apaaraa |
Were great heroes and truthful (princes).
ਮਹਾ ਬੀਰ ਬਰਿਆਰ ਧਨੁਖ ਧਰ ॥
mahaa beer bariaar dhanukh dhar |
They were very brave, mighty and archers.
ਗਾਵਤ ਕੀਰਤ ਦੇਸ ਸਭ ਘਰ ਘਰ ॥੧॥੨੩੮॥
gaavat keerat des sabh ghar ghar |1|238|
Their praises were sung in every home in the country.1.238.
ਮਹਾ ਬੀਰ ਅਰੁ ਮਹਾ ਧਨੁਖ ਧਰ ॥
mahaa beer ar mahaa dhanukh dhar |
They were supreme warriors and supreme archers.
ਕਾਪਤ ਤੀਨ ਲੋਕ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਡਰ ॥
kaapat teen lok jaa ke ddar |
Because of their fear, the three worlds trembled.
ਬਡ ਮਹੀਪ ਅਰੁ ਅਖੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਾ ॥
badd maheep ar akhandd prataapaa |
They were kings of indivisible glory.
ਅਮਿਤ ਤੇਜ ਜਾਪਤ ਜਗ ਜਾਪਾ ॥੨॥੨੩੯॥
amit tej jaapat jag jaapaa |2|239|
They were persons of unlimited splendour and the whole world remembered them.2.239.
ਅਜੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਉਤ ਸੂਰ ਮਹਾਨਾ ॥
ajai singh ut soor mahaanaa |
On the other hand, Ajai Singh was a superb hero,
ਬਡ ਮਹੀਪ ਦਸ ਚਾਰ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ॥
badd maheep das chaar nidhaanaa |
Who was a great monarch and adept in fourteen learnings.
ਅਨਬਿਕਾਰ ਅਨਤੋਲ ਅਤੁਲ ਬਲ ॥
anabikaar anatol atul bal |
He was without any vices, he was incomparable and of unweighable minght,
ਅਰ ਅਨੇਕ ਜੀਤੇ ਜਿਨ ਦਲਮਲ ॥੩॥੨੪੦॥
ar anek jeete jin dalamal |3|240|
Who conqured many enemies and mashed them.3.240.
ਜਿਨ ਜੀਤੇ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥
jin jeete sangraam anekaa |
He was the conqueror of many wars.
ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਰਿ ਛਾਡਨ ਏਕਾ ॥
sasatr asatr dhar chhaaddan ekaa |
None of the weapon-wielders could escape him.
ਮਹਾ ਸੂਰ ਗੁਨਵਾਨ ਮਹਾਨਾ ॥
mahaa soor gunavaan mahaanaa |
He was a great hero, possessing great qualities
ਮਾਨਤ ਲੋਕ ਸਗਲ ਜਿਹ ਆਨਾ ॥੪॥੨੪੧॥
maanat lok sagal jih aanaa |4|241|
And all the world venerated him.4.241.
ਮਰਨ ਕਾਲ ਜਨਮੇਜੇ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
maran kaal janameje raajaa |
At the time of death, the king janmeja,
ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਓ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਨ ਸਮਾਜਾ ॥
mantr keeo mantreen samaajaa |
Consulted his council of ministers,
ਰਾਜ ਤਿਲਕ ਭੂਪਤ ਅਭਖੇਖਾ ॥
raaj tilak bhoopat abhakhekhaa |
As to whom should the kingship be awarded?
ਨਿਰਖਤ ਭਏ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਕੀ ਰੇਖਾ ॥੫॥੨੪੨॥
nirakhat bhe nripat kee rekhaa |5|242|
They looked for the mark of kingship.5.242.
ਇਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਜ ਕਵਨ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
ein meh raaj kavan kau deejai |
Out of these three who should be given the kingship?
ਕਉਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਸੁਤ ਕਉ ਨ੍ਰਿਪੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
kaun nripat sut kau nrip keejai |
Which son of the king should be made the king?
ਰਜੀਆ ਪੂਤ ਨ ਰਾਜ ਕੀ ਜੋਗਾ ॥
rajeea poot na raaj kee jogaa |
The son of the maid-servant is not entitled to be the king
ਯਾਹਿ ਕੇ ਜੋਗ ਨ ਰਾਜ ਕੇ ਭੋਗਾ ॥੬॥੨੪੩॥
yaeh ke jog na raaj ke bhogaa |6|243|
The enjoyments of kingship are not meant for him.6.243.
ਅਸ੍ਵਮੇਦ ਕਹੁ ਦੀਨੋ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
asvamed kahu deeno raajaa |
(The eldest son) Asumedh was made the king,
ਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਭਾਖ︀ਯੋ ਸਕਲ ਸਮਾਜਾ ॥
jai pat bhaakhayo sakal samaajaa |
And all the people cheered him as king.
ਜਨਮੇਜਾ ਕੀ ਸੁਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
janamejaa kee sugat karaaee |
The funeral rites of Janmeja were performed.
ਅਸ੍ਵਮੇਦ ਕੈ ਵਜੀ ਵਧਾਈ ॥੭॥੨੪੪॥
asvamed kai vajee vadhaaee |7|244|
There were great rejoicings in the house of Asumedh.7.244.
ਦੂਸਰ ਭਾਇ ਹੁਤੋ ਜੋ ਏਕਾ ॥
doosar bhaae huto jo ekaa |
Another one brother that the king had,
ਰਤਨ ਦੀਏ ਤਿਹ ਦਰਬ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥
ratan dee tih darab anekaa |
Was given enormous wealth and precious articles.
ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਕੈ ਅਪਨਾ ਠਹਰਾਇਓ ॥
mantree kai apanaa tthaharaaeo |
He was also made one of the ministers,
ਦੂਸਰ ਠਉਰ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਬੈਠਾਇਓ ॥੮॥੨੪੫॥
doosar tthaur tiseh baitthaaeo |8|245|
And placed him at another position.8.245.
ਤੀਸਰ ਜੋ ਰਜੀਆ ਸੁਤ ਰਹਾ ॥
teesar jo rajeea sut rahaa |
The third one, who was the son of maid-servant.
ਸੈਨਪਾਲ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਪੁਨ ਕਹਾ ॥
sainapaal taa ko pun kahaa |
He was given the position of army-general
ਬਖਸੀ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਕੌ ਠਹਰਾਇਓ ॥
bakhasee kar taakau tthaharaaeo |
He was made the Bakhshi
ਸਬ ਦਲ ਕੋ ਤਿਹ ਕਾਮੁ ਚਲਾਇਓ ॥੯॥੨੪੬॥
sab dal ko tih kaam chalaaeo |9|246|
And he administered all the work of the forces.9.246.
ਰਾਜੁ ਪਾਇ ਸਭਹੂ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਓ ॥
raaj paae sabhahoo sukh paaeo |
(All the brothers) were happy on getting their positions in kingdom.
ਭੂਪਤ ਕਉ ਨਾਚਬ ਸੁਖ ਆਇਓ ॥
bhoopat kau naachab sukh aaeo |
The king felt great pleasure in seeing dances.
ਤੇਰਹ ਸੈ ਚੌਸਠ ਮਰਦੰਗਾ ॥
terah sai chauasatth maradangaa |
There were thirteen hundred and sixty-four Mridangs,
ਬਾਜਤ ਹੈ ਕਈ ਕੋਟ ਉਪੰਗਾ ॥੧੦॥੨੪੭॥
baajat hai kee kott upangaa |10|247|
And millions of other musical instruments resounded in his presence.10.247.
ਦੂਸਰ ਭਾਇ ਭਏ ਮਦ ਅੰਧਾ ॥
doosar bhaae bhe mad andhaa |
The second brother took to heavy drinding.
ਦੇਖਤ ਨਾਚਤ ਲਾਇ ਸੁਗੰਧਾ ॥
dekhat naachat laae sugandhaa |
He was fond of applying perfumes and seeing dances.
ਰਾਜ ਸਾਜ ਦੁਹਹੂੰ ਤੇ ਭੂਲਾ ॥
raaj saaj duhahoon te bhoolaa |
Both the brothers forgot to perform the royal responsibilities,
ਵਾਹੀ ਕੈ ਜਾਇ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਰ ਝੂਲਾ ॥੧੧॥੨੪੮॥
vaahee kai jaae chhatr sir jhoolaa |11|248|
And the canopy of royalty was held on the head of the third one.11.248.
ਕਰਤ ਕਰਤ ਬਹੁ ਦਿਨ ਅਸ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
karat karat bahu din as raajaa |
After the passage of many days in the kingdom like this,
ਉਨ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਭੂਲਿਓ ਰਾਜ ਸਮਾਜਾ ॥
aun duhoon bhoolio raaj samaajaa |
Both the brothers forgot the royal responsibilities.
ਮਦ ਕਰਿ ਅੰਧ ਭਏ ਦੋਊ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾ ॥
mad kar andh bhe doaoo bhraataa |
Both the brother became blind with heavy drinking,
ਰਾਜ ਕਰਨ ਕੀ ਬਿਸਰੀ ਬਾਤਾ ॥੧੨॥੨੪੯॥
raaj karan kee bisaree baataa |12|249|
And forgot everything about kingdom.12.249.

Pauree:
ਕੇਤੇ ਕਹਹਿ ਵਖਾਣ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥
kete kaheh vakhaan keh keh jaavanaa |
Some speak and expound, and while speaking and lecturing, they pass away.
ਵੇਦ ਕਹਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਣ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥
ved kaheh vakhiaan ant na paavanaa |
The Vedas speak and expound on the Lord, but they do not know His limits.
ਪੜਿਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਭੇਦੁ ਬੁਝਿਐ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥
parriai naahee bhed bujhiai paavanaa |
Not by studying, but through understanding, is the Lord's Mystery revealed.
ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਭੇਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਾ ॥
khatt darasan kai bhekh kisai sach samaavanaa |
There are six pathways in the Shaastras, but how rare are those who merge in the True Lord through them.
ਸਚਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ॥
sachaa purakh alakh sabad suhaavanaa |
The True Lord is Unknowable; through the Word of His Shabad, we are embellished.
ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਬਿਸੰਖ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥
mane naau bisankh daragah paavanaa |
One who believes in the Name of the Infinite Lord, attains the Court of the Lord.
ਖਾਲਕ ਕਉ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਢਾਢੀ ਗਾਵਣਾ ॥
khaalak kau aades dtaadtee gaavanaa |
I humbly bow to the Creator Lord; I am a minstrel singing His Praises.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਾ ॥੨੧॥
naanak jug jug ek man vasaavanaa |21|
Nanak enshrines the Lord within his mind. He is the One, throughout the ages. ||21||
ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੨ ॥

Salok, Second Mehl:
ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੋਇ ਅਠੂਹਿਆ ਨਾਗੀ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
mantree hoe atthoohiaa naagee lagai jaae |
Those who charm scorpions and handle snakes
ਆਪਣ ਹਥੀ ਆਪਣੈ ਦੇ ਕੂਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ॥
aapan hathee aapanai de koochaa aape laae |
Only brand themselves with their own hands.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਇਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਅਤੀ ਹੂ ਧਕਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
hukam peaa dhur khasam kaa atee hoo dhakaa khaae |
By the pre-ordained Order of our Lord and Master, they are beaten badly, and struck down.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਿਉ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅੜੈ ਡੁਬੈ ਹਕਿ ਨਿਆਇ ॥
guramukh siau manamukh arrai ddubai hak niaae |
If the self-willed manmukhs fight with the Gurmukh, they are condemned by the Lord, the True Judge.
ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਆਪੇ ਖਸਮੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਉਪਾਇ ॥
duhaa siriaa aape khasam vekhai kar viaupaae |
He Himself is the Lord and Master of both worlds. He beholds all and makes the exact determination.
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak evai jaaneeai sabh kichh tiseh rajaae |1|
O Nanak, know this well: everything is in accordance with His Will. ||1||

Second Mehl:
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੇ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਤਾ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
naanak parakhe aap kau taa paarakh jaan |
O Nanak, if someone judges himself, only then is he known as a real judge.
ਰੋਗੁ ਦਾਰੂ ਦੋਵੈ ਬੁਝੈ ਤਾ ਵੈਦੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥
rog daaroo dovai bujhai taa vaid sujaan |
If someone understands both the disease and the medicine, only then is he a wise physician.
ਵਾਟ ਨ ਕਰਈ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਿਹਮਾਣੁ ॥
vaatt na karee maamalaa jaanai mihamaan |
Do not involve yourself in idle business on the way; remember that you are only a guest here.
ਮੂਲੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਗਲਾ ਕਰੇ ਹਾਣਿ ਲਾਏ ਹਾਣੁ ॥
mool jaan galaa kare haan laae haan |
Speak with those who know the Primal Lord, and renounce your evil ways.
ਲਬਿ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਟੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
lab na chalee sach rahai so visatt paravaan |
That virtuous person who does not walk in the way of greed, and who abides in Truth, is accepted and famous.
ਸਰੁ ਸੰਧੇ ਆਗਾਸ ਕਉ ਕਿਉ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਬਾਣੁ ॥
sar sandhe aagaas kau kiau pahuchai baan |
If an arrow is shot at the sky, how can it reach there?
ਅਗੈ ਓਹੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਵਾਹੇਦੜੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
agai ohu agam hai vaahedarr jaan |2|
The sky above is unreachable-know this well, O archer! ||2||

Pauree:
ਨਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੀਆ ॥
naaree purakh piaar prem seegaareea |
The soul-bride loves her Husband Lord; she is embellished with His Love.
ਕਰਨਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਨ ਰਹਨੀ ਵਾਰੀਆ ॥
karan bhagat din raat na rahanee vaareea |
She worships Him day and night; she cannot be restrained from doing so.
ਮਹਲਾ ਮੰਝਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਆ ॥
mahalaa manjh nivaas sabad savaareea |
In the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, she has made her home; she is adorned with the Word of His Shabad.
ਸਚੁ ਕਹਨਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਸੇ ਵੇਚਾਰੀਆ ॥
sach kehan aradaas se vechaareea |
She is humble, and she offers her true and sincere prayer.
ਸੋਹਨਿ ਖਸਮੈ ਪਾਸਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੀਆ ॥
sohan khasamai paas hukam sidhaareea |
She is beautiful in the Company of her Lord and Master; she walks in the Way of His Will.
ਸਖੀ ਕਹਨਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਮਨਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੀਆ ॥
sakhee kehan aradaas manahu piaareea |
With her dear friends, she offers her heart-felt prayers to her Beloved.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਵਾਸੁ ਫਿਟੁ ਸੁ ਜੀਵਿਆ ॥
bin naavai dhrig vaas fitt su jeeviaa |
Cursed is that home, and shameful is that life, which is without the Name of the Lord.
ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਆਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਿਆ ॥੨੨॥
sabad savaareeaas amrit peeviaa |22|
But she who is adorned with the Word of His Shabad, drinks in the Amrit of His Nectar. ||22||
ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok, First Mehl:
ਮਾਰੂ ਮੀਹਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਆ ਅਗੀ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਭੁਖ ॥
maaroo meehi na tripatiaa agee lahai na bhukh |
The desert is not satisfied by rain, and the fire is not quenched by desire.
ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਜਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਆ ਸਾਇਰ ਭਰੇ ਕਿਸੁਕ ॥
raajaa raaj na tripatiaa saaeir bhare kisuk |
The king is not satisfied with his kingdom, and the oceans are full, but still they thirst for more.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਕੇਤੀ ਪੁਛਾ ਪੁਛ ॥੧॥
naanak sache naam kee ketee puchhaa puchh |1|
O Nanak, how many times must I seek and ask for the True Name? ||1||

Second Mehl:
ਨਿਹਫਲੰ ਤਸਿ ਜਨਮਸਿ ਜਾਵਤੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨ ਬਿੰਦਤੇ ॥
nihafalan tas janamas jaavat braham na bindate |
Life is useless, as long as one does not know the Lord God.
ਸਾਗਰੰ ਸੰਸਾਰਸਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਰਹਿ ਕੇ ॥
saagaran sansaaras gur parasaadee tareh ke |
Only a few cross over the world-ocean, by Guru's Grace.
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
karan kaaran samarath hai kahu naanak beechaar |
The Lord is the All-powerful Cause of causes, says Nanak after deep deliberation.
ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਲ ਰਖੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
kaaran karate vas hai jin kal rakhee dhaar |2|
The creation is subject to the Creator, who sustains it by His Almighty Power. ||2||

Pauree:
ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ਢਾਢੀ ਵਸਿਆ ॥
khasamai kai darabaar dtaadtee vasiaa |
In the Court of the Lord and Master, His minstrels dwell.
ਸਚਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਕਲਾਣਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਵਿਗਸਿਆ ॥
sachaa khasam kalaan kamal vigasiaa |
Singing the Praises of their True Lord and Master, the lotuses of their hearts have blossomed forth.
ਖਸਮਹੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇ ਮਨਹੁ ਰਹਸਿਆ ॥
khasamahu pooraa paae manahu rahasiaa |
Obtaining their Perfect Lord and Master, their minds are transfixed with ecstasy.
ਦੁਸਮਨ ਕਢੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਜਣ ਸਰਸਿਆ ॥
dusaman kadte maar sajan sarasiaa |
Their enemies have been driven out and subdued, and their friends are very pleased.
ਸਚਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਚਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਦਸਿਆ ॥
sachaa satigur sevan sachaa maarag dasiaa |
Those who serve the Truthful True Guru are shown the True Path.
ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਵਿਧਉਸਿਆ ॥
sachaa sabad beechaar kaal vidhausiaa |
Reflecting on the True Word of the Shabad, death is overcome.
ਢਾਢੀ ਕਥੇ ਅਕਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
dtaadtee kathe akath sabad savaariaa |
Speaking the Unspoken Speech of the Lord, one is adorned with the Word of His Shabad.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਣ ਗਹਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥੨੩॥
naanak gun geh raas har jeeo mile piaariaa |23|
Nanak holds tight to the Treasure of Virtue, and meets with the Dear, Beloved Lord. ||23||
