ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥

BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA

ਕਹੂੰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਾਨੀ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੇਦ ਚਰਚਾ ॥

kahoon braham baanee kareh bed charachaa |

Somewhere there was the recitation of Upnishads and somewhere there was discussion about the Vedas.

ਕਹੂੰ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਬੈਠੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਅਰਚਾ ॥

kahoon bipr baitthe kareh braham arachaa |

Somewhere the Brahmins were seated together and worshipping Brahman

ਤਹਾ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਸਨੌਢ ਤੇ ਏਕ ਲਛਨ ॥

tahaa bipr sanauadt te ek lachhan |

There the Sanaudh Brahmin lived with such qualifications:

ਕਰੈ ਬਕਲ ਬਸਤ੍ਰੰ ਫਿਰੈ ਬਾਇ ਭਛਨ ॥੧॥੨੭੨॥

karai bakal basatran firai baae bhachhan |1|272|

He wore the clothes of the leaves and bark of birch tree and moved around subsisting only on air.1.272.

ਕਹੂੰ ਬੇਦ ਸਿਯਾਮੰ ਸੁਰੰ ਸਾਥ ਗਾਵੈ ॥

kahoon bed siyaaman suran saath gaavai |

Somewhere the hymns of Sam Veda were sung melodiously

ਕਹੂੰ ਜੁਜਰ ਬੇਦੰ ਪੜੇ ਮਾਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

kahoon jujar bedan parre maan paavai |

Somewhere the Yajur Veda was being recited and honours were received

ਕਹੂੰ ਰਿਗੰ ਬਾਚੈ ਮਹਾ ਅਰਥ ਬੇਦੰ ॥

kahoon rigan baachai mahaa arath bedan |

Somewhere the Rig Veda was being read and somewhere the Atharva Veda

ਕਹੂੰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਿਛਾ ਕਹੂੰ ਬਿਸਨ ਭੇਦੰ ॥੨॥੨੭੩॥

kahoon braham sichhaa kahoon bisan bhedan |2|273|

Somewhere there was the discourse about Brahm Sutras and somewhere there was discussion about the mysteries of Vishnu.2.273.

ਕਹੂੰ ਅਸਟ ਦ੍ਵੈ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕਥੈ ਕਥਾਣੰ ॥

kahoon asatt dvai avataar kathai kathaanan |

Somewhere the discourse about the ten incarnations was being delivered.

ਦਸੰ ਚਾਰ ਚਉਦਾਹ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਨਿਧਾਨੰ ॥

dasan chaar chaudaah bidiaa nidhaanan |

There were persons adept in fourteen learinings.

ਤਹਾ ਪੰਡਤੰ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਪਰਮੰ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨੰ ॥

tahaa panddatan bipr paraman prabeenan |

There were three very learned Brahmins,

ਰਹੇ ਏਕ ਆਸੰ ਨਿਰਾਸੰ ਬਿਹੀਨੰ ॥੩॥੨੭੪॥

rahe ek aasan niraasan biheenan |3|274|

Who were unattached with the world and had faith only in One Lord.3.274.

ਕਹੂੰ ਕੋਕਸਾਰੰ ਪੜੈ ਨੀਤ ਧਰਮੰ ॥

kahoon kokasaaran parrai neet dharaman |

Somewhere Koksar and somewhere Dharam-Niti was being read

ਕਹੂੰ ਨ︀ਯਾਇ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੜੈ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥

kahoon nayaae saasatr parrai chhatr karaman |

Somewhere the Nyaya Shastra and somewhere Kshatriya-Dharma was being studies

ਕਹੂੰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਪੜੈ ਬ︀ਯੋਮ ਬਾਨੀ ॥

kahoon braham bidiaa parrai bayom baanee |

Somewhere Theology and somewhere astronomy was being studied

ਕਹੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਸਿਉ ਪਾਠਿ ਪਠਿਐ ਪਿੜਾਨੀ ॥੪॥੨੭੫॥

kahoon prem siau paatth patthiai pirraanee |4|275|

Somewhere the Eulogy of war-goddess was being sung with devotion.4.275.

ਕਹੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਕ੍ਰਿਤੰ ਨਾਗ ਭਾਖਾ ਉਚਾਰਹਿ ॥

kahoon praakritan naag bhaakhaa uchaareh |

Somewhere the Prakrit language and somewhere the Naga language was being studied

ਕਹੂੰ ਸਹਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਬ︀ਯੋਮ ਬਾਨੀ ਬਿਚਾਰਹਿ ॥

kahoon sahasakrit bayom baanee bichaareh |

Somewhere Sahaskriti and somewhere Sanskrit (or astrology) was being discussed

ਕਹੂੰ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਮੈ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਵੈ ॥

kahoon saasatr sangeet mai geet gaavai |

Somewhere songs were sung from Sangeet Shastra

ਕਹੂੰ ਜਛ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥੫॥੨੭੬॥

kahoon jachh gandhrab bidiaa bataavai |5|276|

Somewhere the differences in the learnings of Yakshas and gandhavas were being elucidated.5.276.

ਕਹੂੰ ਨਿਆਇ ਮੀਮਾਸਕਾ ਤਰਕ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰੰ ॥

kahoon niaae meemaasakaa tarak saasatran |

Somewhere Nyaya Shastra, somewhere Mimansa Shasta and somewhere Tarak Shastra (logic) were studied

ਕਹੂੰ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੜੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਅਸਤ੍ਰੰ ॥

kahoon agan baanee parrai braham asatran |

Somewhere the manyras of fire-shafts and Brahm-astras were recited

ਕਹੂੰ ਬੇਦ ਪਾਤੰਜਲੈ ਸੇਖ ਕਾਨੰ ॥

The cycle of the treasure of fourteen learnings was studied.6.277.

Somewhere Maha Bhashaya of Patanjalli and somewhere the Komudi of Panini was studied

ਕਹੂੰ ਸਿਧਕਾ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਕਾ ਸਾਰਸੁਤੀਯੰ ॥

kahoon sidhakaa chandrakaa saarasuteeyan |

Somewhere Siddhant Komudi, somewhere Chandrika and somewhere Sarsut were read

ਕਹੂੰ ਬ︀ਯਾਕਰਣ ਬੈਸਿਕਾਲਾਪ ਕਥੇ ॥

ਕਹੂੰ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਬ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬਿਚਾਰੈ ॥

ਕਹੂੰ ਖੜਗ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਜੁਝੈ ਮਾਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

ਕਹੂੰ ਜਾਮਨੀ ਤੋਰਕੀ ਬੀਰ ਬਿਦਿਆ ॥

Somewhere Persian and new art of warfare were being studied.10.281.

ਕਹੂੰ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਕੀ ਘਾਉ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬਤੈਗੋ ॥

kahoon sasatr kee ghaau bidiaa bataigo |

Somewhere someone was elucidating the treatment of weapon-wounds

ਕਹੂੰ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਕੋ ਪਾਤਕਾ ਪੈ ਚਲੈਗੋ ॥

kahoon asatr ko paatakaa pai chalaigo |

Somewhere the targets were being shot at with arms

ਕਹੂੰ ਚਰਮ ਕੀ ਚਾਰ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥

kahoon charam kee chaar bidiaa bataavai |

Somewhere the skilful use of the shield was being described

ਕਹੂੰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਕਰੈ ਦਰਬ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧੧॥੨੮੨॥

Somewhere someone was delivering discourse on Vedanta and receiving monetary award.11.282.

ਕਹੂੰ ਨ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਕਹੂੰ ਨਾਦ ਭੇਦੰ ॥

Somewhere the art of dancing and the mystery of sound was being described

ਕਹੂੰ ਪਰਮ ਪੌਰਾਨ ਕਥੈ ਕਤੇਬੰ ॥

kahoon param pauaraan kathai kateban |

Somewhere discourses were being held on Puranas and Semitic texts

ਸਭੈ ਅਛਰ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਸਭੈ ਦੇਸ ਬਾਨੀ ॥

sabhai achhar bidiaa sabhai des baanee |

Somewhere alphabets and languages of various countries,Were being taugh

ਸਭੈ ਦੇਸ ਪੂਜਾ ਸਮਸਤੋ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੀ ॥੧੨॥੨੮੩॥

sabhai des poojaa samasato pradhaanee |12|283|

Somewhere the significance was being attached to the worship practiced in various countries.12.283.

ਕਹੰ ਸਿੰਘਨੀ ਦੂਧ ਬਛੇ ਚੁੰਘਾਵੈ ॥

kahan singhanee doodh bachhe chunghaavai |

Somewhere the lioness was causing her milk to be sucked by the calves

ਕਹੂੰ ਸਿੰਘ ਲੈ ਸੰਗ ਗਊਆ ਚਰਾਵੈ ॥

kahoon singh lai sang gaooaa charaavai |

Somewhere the lion was grazing a herd of cows,

ਫਿਰੈ ਸਰਪ ਨ੍ਰਿਕ੍ਰੁਧ ਤੌਨਿ ਸਥਲਾਨੰ ॥

firai sarap nrikrudh tauan sathalaanan |

At that place the snake was creeping without ire

ਕਹੂੰ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਥੈ ਕਥਾਨੰ ॥੧੩॥੨੮੪॥

kahoon saasatree satr kathai kathaanan |13|284|

Somewhere the learned Pundit was praising the enemy in his discourse.13.284.

ਤਥਾ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੰ ਤਥਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਤ੍ਰੰ ॥

tathaa satr mitran tathaa mitr satran |

The enemy and the friend and the enemy are alike

ਜਥਾ ਏਕ ਛਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਥਾ ਪਰਮ ਛਤ੍ਰੰ ॥

jathaa ek chhatree tathaa param chhatran |

An ordinary Kshatriya and a universal are alike.

ਤਹਾ ਗਯੋ ਅਜੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੂਰਾ ਸੁਕ੍ਰੁਧੰ ॥

tahaa gayo ajai singh sooraa sukrudhan |

In that place of (of Sanaudhi Brahmin) went the warrior Ajai Singh in great rage,

ਹਨਿਯੋ ਅਸਮੇਧੰ ਕਰਿਓ ਪਰਮ ਜੁਧੰ ॥੧੪॥੨੮੫॥

haniyo asamedhan kario param judhan |14|285|

Who wanted to kill Asumedh in a fierce war.14.285.

ਰਜੀਆ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਦਿਖਿਯੋ ਡਰੇ ਦੋਇ ਭ੍ਰਾਤੰ ॥

rajeea putr dikhiyo ddare doe bhraatan |

Both the brothers were frightened on seeing the son of the maid-servant.

ਗਹੀ ਸਰਣ ਬਿਪ੍ਰੰ ਬੁਲਿਯੋ ਏਵ ਬਾਤੰ ॥

gahee saran bipran buliyo ev baatan |

They took shelter of the Brahmin and said:

ਗੁਵਾ ਹੇਮ ਸਰਬੰ ਮਿਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਦਾਨੰ ॥

guvaa hem saraban mile praan daanan |

“Save our life, thou shalt receive the gift of cows and gold from the lord

ਸਰਨੰ ਸਰਨੰ ਸਰਨੰ ਗੁਰਾਨੰ ॥੧੫॥੨੮੬॥

saranan saranan saranan guraanan |15|286|

“O Guru, we are in thy shelter, we are in thy shelter, we are in thy sgelter.”15.286.

Second Mehl:

ਅਗੀ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੇਹੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥

agee paalaa ki kare sooraj kehee raat |

What can the cold do to the fire? How can the night affect the sun?

ਚੰਦ ਅਨੇਰਾ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਤਿ ॥

chand aneraa ki kare paun paanee kiaa jaat |

What can the darkness do to the moon? What can social status do to air and water?

ਧਰਤੀ ਚੀਜੀ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

dharatee cheejee ki kare jis vich sabh kichh hoe |

What are personal possessions to the earth, from which all things are produced?

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਪਤਿ ਰਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

naanak taa pat jaaneeai jaa pat rakhai soe |2|

O Nanak, he alone is known as honorable, whose honor the Lord preserves. ||2||

Pauree:

ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਬਹਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਲਾਣਿਆ ॥

tudh sache subahaan sadaa kalaaniaa |

It is of You, O my True and Wondrous Lord, that I sing forever.

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਹੋਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

toon sachaa deebaan hor aavan jaaniaa |

Yours is the True Court. All others are subject to coming and going.

ਸਚੁ ਜਿ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਸਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਜੇਹਿਆ ॥

sach ji mangeh daan si tudhai jehiaa |

Those who ask for the gift of the True Name are like You.

ਸਚੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਸੋਹਿਆ ॥

sach teraa furamaan sabade sohiaa |

Your Command is True; we are adorned with the Word of Your Shabad.

ਮੰਨਿਐ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਤੁਧੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

maniai giaan dhiaan tudhai te paaeaa |

Through faith and trust, we receive spiritual wisdom and meditation from You.

ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥

karam pavai neesaan na chalai chalaaeaa |

By Your Grace, the banner of honor is obtained. It cannot be taken away or lost.

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥

toon sachaa daataar nit deveh charreh savaaeaa |

You are the True Giver; You give continually. Your Gifts continue to increase.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨੬॥

naanak mangai daan jo tudh bhaaeaa |26|

Nanak begs for that gift which is pleasing to You. ||26||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੨ ॥

Salok, Second Mehl:

ਦੀਖਿਆ ਆਖਿ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮੇਉ ॥

deekhiaa aakh bujhaaeaa sifatee sach sameo |

Those who have accepted the Guru's Teachings, and who have found the path, remain absorbed in the Praises of the True Lord.

ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਉਪਦੇਸੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਉ ॥੧॥

tin kau kiaa upadeseeai jin gur naanak deo |1|

What teachings can be imparted to those who have the Divine Guru Nanak as their Guru? ||1||

First Mehl:

ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

aap bujhaae soee boojhai |

We understand the Lord only when He Himself inspires us to understand Him.

ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਝਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥

jis aap sujhaae tis sabh kichh soojhai |

He alone knows everything, unto whom the Lord Himself gives knowledge.

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਥਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਲੂਝੈ ॥

keh keh kathanaa maaeaa loojhai |

One may talk and preach and give sermons but still yearn after Maya.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਗਲ ਕਰੇ ਆਕਾਰ ॥

hukamee sagal kare aakaar |

The Lord, by the Hukam of His Command, has created the entire creation.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਰਬ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥

aape jaanai sarab veechaar |

He Himself knows the inner nature of all.

ਅਖਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਖਿਓ ਆਪਿ ॥

akhar naanak akhio aap |

O Nanak, He Himself uttered the Word.

ਲਹੈ ਭਰਾਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥੨॥

lahai bharaat hovai jis daat |2|

Doubt departs from one who receives this gift. ||2||

Pauree:

ਹਉ ਢਾਢੀ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

hau dtaadtee vekaar kaarai laaeaa |

I was a minstrel, out of work, when the Lord took me into His service.

ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਹੈ ਕੈ ਵਾਰ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ॥

raat dihai kai vaar dhurahu furamaaeaa |

To sing His Praises day and night, He gave me His Order, right from the start.

ਢਾਢੀ ਸਚੈ ਮਹਲਿ ਖਸਮਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥

dtaadtee sachai mehal khasam bulaaeaa |

My Lord and Master has summoned me, His minstrel, to the True Mansion of His Presence.

ਸਚੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਪੜਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

sachee sifat saalaah kaparraa paaeaa |

He has dressed me in the robes of His True Praise and Glory.

ਸਚਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥

sachaa amrit naam bhojan aaeaa |

The Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name has become my food.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਖਾਧਾ ਰਜਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

ਢਾਢੀ ਕਰੇ ਪਸਾਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥

dtaadtee kare pasaau sabad vajaaeaa |

His minstrel spreads His Glory, singing and vibrating the Word of His Shabad.
