First Mehl:
ਦਸ ਬਾਲਤਣਿ ਬੀਸ ਰਵਣਿ ਤੀਸਾ ਕਾ ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
das baalatan bees ravan teesaa kaa sundar kahaavai |
At the age of ten, he is a child; at twenty, a youth, and at thirty, he is called handsome.
ਚਾਲੀਸੀ ਪੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਪਚਾਸੀ ਪਗੁ ਖਿਸੈ ਸਠੀ ਕੇ ਬੋਢੇਪਾ ਆਵੈ ॥
chaaleesee pur hoe pachaasee pag khisai satthee ke bodtepaa aavai |
At forty, he is full of life; at fifty, his foot slips, and at sixty, old age is upon him.
ਸਤਰਿ ਕਾ ਮਤਿਹੀਣੁ ਅਸੀਹਾਂ ਕਾ ਵਿਉਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
satar kaa matiheen aseehaan kaa viauhaar na paavai |
At seventy, he loses his intellect, and at eighty, he cannot perform his duties.
ਨਵੈ ਕਾ ਸਿਹਜਾਸਣੀ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਪ ਬਲੁ ॥
navai kaa sihajaasanee mool na jaanai ap bal |
At ninety, he lies in his bed, and he cannot understand his weakness.
ਢੰਢੋਲਿਮੁ ਢੂਢਿਮੁ ਡਿਠੁ ਮੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗੁ ਧੂਏ ਕਾ ਧਵਲਹਰੁ ॥੩॥
dtandtolim dtoodtim dditth mai naanak jag dhooe kaa dhavalahar |3|
After seeking and searching for such a long time, O Nanak, I have seen that the world is just a mansion of smoke. ||3||

Pauree:
ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਪਿ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਤੀ ॥
toon karataa purakh agam hai aap srisatt upaatee |
You, O Creator Lord, are Unfathomable. You Yourself created the Universe,
ਰੰਗ ਪਰੰਗ ਉਪਾਰਜਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਾਤੀ ॥
rang parang upaarajanaa bahu bahu bidh bhaatee |
its colors, qualities and varieties, in so many ways and forms.
ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਈਐ ਸਭੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਤੁਮਾਤੀ ॥
toon jaaneh jin upaaeeai sabh khel tumaatee |
You created it, and You alone understand it. It is all Your Play.
ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਉਠਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
eik aaveh ik jaeh utth bin naavai mar jaatee |
Some come, and some arise and depart; but without the Name, all are bound to die.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲਿਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
guramukh rang chalooliaa rang har rang raatee |
The Gurmukhs are imbued with the deep crimson color of the poppy; they are dyed in the color of the Lord's Love.
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਸਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤੀ ॥
so sevahu sat niranjano har purakh bidhaatee |
So serve the True and Pure Lord, the Supremely Powerful Architect of Destiny.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਵਡਾਤੀ ॥
toon aape aap sujaan hai vadd purakh vaddaatee |
You Yourself are All-knowing. O Lord, You are the Greatest of the Great!
ਜੋ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਚਿਆ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਜਾਤੀ ॥੧॥
jo man chit tudh dhiaaeide mere sachiaa bal bal hau tin jaatee |1|
O my True Lord, I am a sacrifice, a humble sacrifice, to those who meditate on You within their conscious mind. ||1||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok, First Mehl:
ਜੀਉ ਪਾਇ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਰਖਿਆ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਇ ॥
jeeo paae tan saajiaa rakhiaa banat banaae |
He placed the soul in the body which He had fashioned. He protects the Creation which He has created.
ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
akhee dekhai jihavaa bolai kanee surat samaae |
With their eyes, they see, and with their tongues, they speak; with their ears, they bring the mind to awareness.
ਪੈਰੀ ਚਲੈ ਹਥੀ ਕਰਣਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਪੈਨੈ ਖਾਇ ॥
pairee chalai hathee karanaa ditaa painai khaae |
With their feet, they walk, and with their hands, they work; they wear and eat whatever is given.
ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
jin rach rachiaa tiseh na jaanai andhaa andh kamaae |
They do not know the One who created the Creation. The blind fools do their dark deeds.
ਜਾ ਭਜੈ ਤਾ ਠੀਕਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾੜਤ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
jaa bhajai taa ttheekar hovai ghaarrat gharree na jaae |
When the pitcher of the body breaks and shatters into pieces, it cannot be re-created again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak gur bin naeh pat pat vin paar na paae |1|
O Nanak, without the Guru, there is no honor; without honor, no one is carried across. ||1||

Second Mehl:
ਦੇਂਦੇ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਦਿਤਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਐਸਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
dende thaavahu ditaa changaa manamukh aisaa jaaneeai |
They prefer the gift, instead of the Giver; such is the way of the self-willed manmukhs.
ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥
surat mat chaturaaee taa kee kiaa kar aakh vakhaaneeai |
What can anyone say about their intelligence, their understanding or their cleverness?
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਹਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਚਹੁ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
antar beh kai karam kamaavai so chahu kunddee jaaneeai |
The deeds which one commits, while sitting in one's own home, are known far and wide, in the four directions.
ਜੋ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਰਮ ਨਾਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਾਪਿ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਪਾਪੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
jo dharam kamaavai tis dharam naau hovai paap kamaanai paapee jaaneeai |
One who lives righteously is known as righteous; one who commits sins is known as a sinner.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥
toon aape khel kareh sabh karate kiaa doojaa aakh vakhaaneeai |
You Yourself enact the entire play, O Creator. Why should we speak of any other?
ਜਿਚਰੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੂੰ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਿਹੁ ਦਿਖਾ ਸਿਆਣੀਐ ॥
jichar teree jot tichar jotee vich toon boleh vin jotee koee kichh karihu dikhaa siaaneeai |
As long as Your Light is within the body, You speak through that Light. Without Your Light, who can do anything? Show me any such cleverness!
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਇਕੋ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨॥
naanak guramukh nadaree aaeaa har iko sugharr sujaaneeai |2|
O Nanak, the Lord alone is Perfect and All-knowing; He is revealed to the Gurmukh. ||2||

Pauree:
ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
tudh aape jagat upaae kai tudh aape dhandhai laaeaa |
You Yourself created the world, and You Yourself put it to work.
ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਖੁਆਇਆ ॥
moh tthgaulee paae kai tudh aapahu jagat khuaaeaa |
Administering the drug of emotional attachment, You Yourself have led the world astray.
ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਹੈ ਨਹ ਤਿਪਤੈ ਭੁਖਾ ਤਿਹਾਇਆ ॥
tisanaa andar agan hai neh tipatai bhukhaa tihaaeaa |
The fire of desire is deep within; unsatisfied, people remain hungry and thirsty.
ਸਹਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
sahasaa ihu sansaar hai mar jamai aaeaa jaaeaa |
This world is an illusion; it dies and it is re-born-it comes and it goes in reincarnation.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਸਭਿ ਥਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
bin satigur mohu na tuttee sabh thake karam kamaaeaa |
Without the True Guru, emotional attachment is not broken. All have grown weary of performing empty rituals.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸੁਖਿ ਰਜਾ ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
guramatee naam dhiaaeeai sukh rajaa jaa tudh bhaaeaa |
Those who follow the Guru's Teachings meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Filled with a joyful peace, they surrender to Your Will.
ਕੁਲੁ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਣੇਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
kul udhaare aapanaa dhan janedee maaeaa |
They save their families and ancestors; blessed are the mothers who gave birth to them.
ਸੋਭਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
sobhaa surat suhaavanee jin har setee chit laaeaa |2|
Beautiful and sublime is the glory and the understanding of those who focus their consciousness on the Lord. ||2||
ਪਾਧੜੀ ਛੰਦ ॥ ਤ੍ਵਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

PAADHRAI STANZA BY THY GRACE
ਦਿਨ ਅਜਬ ਏਕ ਆਤਮਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
din ajab ek aatamaa raam |
ਅਨਭਉ ਸਰੂਪ ਅਨਹਦ ਅਕਾਮ ॥
anbhau saroop anahad akaam |
On a day the curious soul (asked): The infinite and Desire less Lord, the Intuitive Entity.
ਅਨਛਿਜ ਤੇਜ ਆਜਾਨ ਬਾਹੁ ॥
anachhij tej aajaan baahu |
Of everlasting Glory and long-armed
ਰਾਜਾਨ ਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਾਨ ਸਾਹੁ ॥੧॥੧੨੬॥
raajaan raaj saahaan saahu |1|126|
The King of kings and Emperor of emperors.1.126.
ਉਚਰਿਓ ਆਤਮਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸੰਗ ॥
auchario aatamaa paramaatamaa sang |
The soul said to the Higher Soul
ਉਤਭੁਜ ਸਰੂਪ ਅਬਿਗਤ ਅਭੰਗ ॥
autabhuj saroop abigat abhang |
The Germinating Entity, Unmanifested and Invincible
ਇਹ ਕਉਨ ਆਹਿ ਆਤਮਾ ਸਰੂਪ ॥
eih kaun aaeh aatamaa saroop |
ਜਿਹ ਅਮਿਤ ਤੇਜਿ ਅਤਿਭੁਤਿ ਬਿਭੂਤਿ ॥੨॥੧੨੭॥
jih amit tej atibhut bibhoot |2|127|
“What is this Soul Entity? Which hath indelible glory and which is of queer substance.”2.127.
