ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਤੁ ਬਨਿਤਾ ॥
maat pitaa bhaaee sut banitaa |
Mother, father, siblings, children and spouse
ਚੂਗਹਿ ਚੋਗ ਅਨੰਦ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥
choogeh chog anand siau jugataa |
involved with them, people eat the food of bliss.
ਉਰਝਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਮਨ ਮੀਠ ਮੋੁਹਾਰਾ ॥
aurajh pario man meetth mouhaaraa |
The mind is entangled in sweet emotional attachment.
ਗੁਨ ਗਾਹਕ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
gun gaahak mere praan adhaaraa |1|
Those who seek God's Glorious Virtues are the support of my breath of life. ||1||
ਏਕੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
ek hamaaraa antarajaamee |
My One Lord is the Inner-Knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਧਰ ਏਕਾ ਮੈ ਟਿਕ ਏਕਸੁ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

He alone is my Support; He is my only Protection. My Great Lord and Master is over and above the heads of kings. ||1||Pause||
ਛਲ ਨਾਗਨਿ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਟੂਟਨਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
chhal naagan siau meree ttoottan hoee |
I have broken my ties to that deceitful serpent.
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਇਹ ਝੂਠੀ ਧੋਹੀ ॥
gur kahiaa ih jhootthee dhohee |
The Guru has told me that it is false and fraudulent.
ਮੁਖਿ ਮੀਠੀ ਖਾਈ ਕਉਰਾਇ ॥
mukh meetthee khaaee kauraae |
Its face is sweet, but it tastes very bitter.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਅਘਾਇ ॥੨॥
amrit naam man rahiaa aghaae |2|
My mind remains satisfied with the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||
ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਸਿਉ ਗਈ ਵਿਖੋਟਿ ॥
lobh moh siau gee vikhott |
I have broken my ties with greed and emotional attachment.
ਗੁਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਛੋਟਿ ॥
gur kripaal mohi keenee chhott |
The Merciful Guru has rescued me from them.
ਇਹ ਠਗਵਾਰੀ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਘਰ ਗਾਲੇ ॥
eih tthagavaaree bahut ghar gaale |
These cheating thieves have plundered so many homes.
ਹਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੇ ॥੩॥
ham gur raakh lee kirapaale |3|
The Merciful Guru has protected and saved me. ||3||
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਸਿਉ ਠਾਟੁ ਨ ਬਨਿਆ ॥
kaam krodh siau tthaatt na baniaa |
I have no dealings whatsoever with sexual desire and anger.
ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਕਾਨੀ ਸੁਨਿਆ ॥
gur upades mohi kaanee suniaa |
I listen to the Guru's Teachings.
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਮਹਾ ਚੰਡਾਲ ॥
jeh dekhau teh mahaa chanddaal |
Wherever I look, I see the most horrible goblins.
ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥੪॥
raakh lee apunai gur gopaal |4|
My Guru, the Lord of the World, has saved me from them. ||4||
ਦਸ ਨਾਰੀ ਮੈ ਕਰੀ ਦੁਹਾਗਨਿ ॥
das naaree mai karee duhaagan |
I have made widows of the ten sensory organs.
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਏਹ ਰਸਹਿ ਬਿਖਾਗਨਿ ॥
gur kahiaa eeh raseh bikhaagan |
The Guru has told me that these pleasures are the fires of corruption.
ਇਨ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ ਰਸਾਤਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
ein sanabandhee rasaatal jaae |
Those who associate with them go to hell.
ਹਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੫॥
ham gur raakhe har liv laae |5|
The Guru has saved me; I am lovingly attuned to the Lord. ||5||
ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ਸਿਉ ਮਸਲਤਿ ਛੋਡੀ ॥
ahamev siau masalat chhoddee |
I have forsaken the advice of my ego.
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਇਹੁ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਡੀ ॥
gur kahiaa ihu moorakh hoddee |
The Guru has told me that this is foolish stubbornness.
ਇਹੁ ਨੀਘਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
eihu neeghar ghar kahee na paae |
This ego is homeless; it shall never find a home.
ਹਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੬॥
ham gur raakh lee liv laae |6|
The Guru has saved me; I am lovingly attuned to the Lord. ||6||
ਇਨ ਲੋਗਨ ਸਿਉ ਹਮ ਭਏ ਬੈਰਾਈ ॥
ein logan siau ham bhe bairaaee |
I have become alienated from these people.
ਏਕ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਹਿ ਦੁਇ ਨ ਖਟਾਂਈ ॥
ek grih meh due na khattaanee |
We cannot both live together in one home.
ਆਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਹਿ ਅੰਚਰਿ ਲਾਗਿ ॥
aae prabh peh anchar laag |
Grasping the hem of the Guru's Robe, I have come to God.
ਕਰਹੁ ਤਪਾਵਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਬਾਗਿ ॥੭॥
karahu tapaavas prabh sarabaag |7|
Please be fair with me, All-knowing Lord God. ||7||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਸਿ ਬੋਲੇ ਕੀਏ ਨਿਆਂਏਂ ॥
prabh has bole kee niaanen |
God smiled at me and spoke, passing judgement.
ਸਗਲ ਦੂਤ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ॥
sagal doot meree sevaa laae |
He made all the demons perform service for me.
ਤੂੰ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਇਹੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
toon tthaakur ihu grihu sabh teraa |
You are my Lord and Master; all this home belongs to You.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥੮॥੧॥
kahu naanak gur keea niberaa |8|1|
Says Nanak, the Guru has passed judgement. ||8||1||

Prabhaatee, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਹਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
man meh krodh mahaa ahankaaraa |
Within the mind dwell anger and massive ego.
ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
poojaa kareh bahut bisathaaraa |
Worship services are performed with great pomp and ceremony.
ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਤਨਿ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਏ ॥
kar isanaan tan chakr banaae |
Ritual cleansing baths are taken, and sacred marks are applied to the body.
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
antar kee mal kab hee na jaae |1|
But still, the filth and pollution within never depart. ||1||
ਇਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
eit sanjam prabh kin hee na paaeaa |
No one has ever found God in this way.
ਭਗਉਤੀ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhgautee mudraa man mohiaa maaeaa |1| rahaau |
The sacred mudras - ritualistic hand gestures - are made, but the mind remains enticed by Maya. ||1||Pause||
ਪਾਪ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੰਚਾਂ ਕੇ ਬਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
paap kareh panchaan ke bas re |
They commit sins, under the influence of the five thieves.
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਉਤਰੇ ॥
teerath naae kaheh sabh utare |
They bathe at sacred shrines, and claim that everything has been washed off.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸੰਕ ॥
bahur kamaaveh hoe nisank |
Then they commit them again, without fear of the consequences.
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਾਲੰਕ ॥੨॥
jam pur baandh khare kaalank |2|
The sinners are bound and gagged, and taken to the City of Death. ||2||
ਘੂਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਬਜਾਵਹਿ ਤਾਲਾ ॥
ghooghar baadh bajaaveh taalaa |
The ankle-bells shake and the cymbals vibrate,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
antar kapatt fireh betaalaa |
but those who have deception within wander lost like demons.
ਵਰਮੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਪੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ॥
varamee maaree saap na mooaa |
By destroying its hole, the snake is not killed.
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕੀਆ ॥੩॥
prabh sabh kichh jaanai jin too keea |3|
God, who created you, knows everything. ||3||
ਪੂੰਅਰ ਤਾਪ ਗੇਰੀ ਕੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ॥
poonar taap geree ke basatraa |
You worship fire and wear saffron colored robes.
ਅਪਦਾ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੇ ਨਸਤਾ ॥
apadaa kaa maariaa grih te nasataa |
Stung by your misfortune, you abandon your home.
ਦੇਸੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਦੇਸਹਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥
des chhodd paradeseh dhaaeaa |
Leaving your own country, you wander in foreign lands.
ਪੰਚ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਨਾਲੇ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥
panch chanddaal naale lai aaeaa |4|
But you bring the five rejects with you. ||4||
ਕਾਨ ਫਰਾਇ ਹਿਰਾਏ ਟੂਕਾ ॥
kaan faraae hiraae ttookaa |
You have split your ears, and now you steal crumbs.
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਨ ਤੇ ਚੂਕਾ ॥
ghar ghar maangai tripataavan te chookaa |
You beg from door to door, but you fail to be satisfied.
ਬਨਿਤਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਦ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
banitaa chhodd bad nadar par naaree |
You have abandoned your own wife, but now you sneak glances at other women.
ਵੇਸਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖਿਆਰੀ ॥੫॥
ves na paaeeai mahaa dukhiaaree |5|
God is not found by wearing religious robes; you are utterly miserable! ||5||
ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਮੋਨੀ ॥
bolai naahee hoe baitthaa monee |
He does not speak; he is on silence.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਲਪ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਜੋਨੀ ॥
antar kalap bhavaaeeai jonee |
But he is filled with desire; he is made to wander in reincarnation.
ਅੰਨ ਤੇ ਰਹਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਹਤਾ ॥
an te rahataa dukh dehee sahataa |
Abstaining from food, his body suffers in pain.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਮਮਤਾ ॥੬॥
hukam na boojhai viaapiaa mamataa |6|
He does not realize the Hukam of the Lord's Command; he is afflicted by possessiveness. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥
bin satigur kinai na paaee param gate |
Without the True Guru, no one has attained the supreme status.
ਪੂਛਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੇ ॥
poochhahu sagal bed sinmrite |
Go ahead and ask all the Vedas and the Simritees.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਜਾਈ ॥
manamukh karam karai ajaaee |
The self-willed manmukhs do useless deeds.
ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਘਰ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਈ ॥੭॥
jiau baaloo ghar tthaur na tthaaee |7|
They are like a house of sand, which cannot stand. ||7||
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਭਏ ਗੋੁਬਿੰਦ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
jis no bhe goubind deaalaa |
One unto whom the Lord of the Universe becomes Merciful,
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਪਾਲਾ ॥
gur kaa bachan tin baadhio paalaa |
sews the Word of the Guru's Shabad into his robes.
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
kott madhe koee sant dikhaaeaa |
Out of millions, it is rare that such a Saint is seen.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
naanak tin kai sang taraaeaa |8|
O Nanak, with him, we are carried across. ||8||
ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ਤਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
je hovai bhaag taa darasan paaeeai |
If one has such good destiny, then the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is obtained.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਤਰਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥
aap tarai sabh kuttanb taraaeeai |1| rahaau doojaa |2|
He saves himself, and carries across all his family as well. ||1||SECOND PAUSE||2||

sree sujulaf de saah dulaaree |
ਜਿਹ ਸਮਾਨ ਨਹਿ ਦੇਵ ਕੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
jih samaan neh dev kumaaree |
ਰਾਜ ਕੁਅਰਿ ਨਿਰਖਾ ਤਿਹ ਜਬ ਹੀ ॥
raaj kuar nirakhaa tih jab hee |
ਲਗਗੀ ਲਗਨ ਨਿਗੌਡੀ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥੩॥
lagagee lagan nigauaddee tab hee |3|
ਹਿਤੂ ਜਾਨਿ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਬੁਲਾਈ ॥
hitoo jaan sahacharee bulaaee |
ਭੇਦ ਭਾਖਿ ਤਿਹ ਠੌਰ ਪਠਾਈ ॥
bhed bhaakh tih tthauar patthaaee |
ਰਾਜ ਕੁਅਰ ਤਿਹ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਆਯੋ ॥
raaj kuar tih haath na aayo |
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਉਹਿ ਇਹ ਆਨਿ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥੪॥
eih bidh uhi ih aan sunaayo |4|
ਸਾਹੁ ਸੁਤਾ ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨ ਥਕੀ ਕਰਿ ॥
saahu sutaa bahu jatan thakee kar |
ਗਯੋ ਨ ਮੀਤ ਕੈਸੇਹੂੰ ਤਿਹ ਘਰ ॥
gayo na meet kaisehoon tih ghar |
ਬੀਰ ਹਾਕਿ ਇਕ ਤਹਾ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥
beer haak ik tahaa patthaayo |
ਸੋਤ ਸੇਜ ਤੇ ਗਹਿ ਪਟਕਾਯੋ ॥੫॥
sot sej te geh pattakaayo |5|
ਟੰਗਰੀ ਭੂਤ ਕਬੈ ਗਹਿ ਲੇਈ ॥
ttangaree bhoot kabai geh leee |
ਕਬਹੂੰ ਡਾਰਿ ਸੇਜ ਪਰ ਦੇਈ ॥
kabahoon ddaar sej par deee |
ਅਧਿਕ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਦੇ ਤਾਹਿ ਪਛਾਰਾ ॥
adhik traas de taeh pachhaaraa |
ਉਹਿ ਡਰਿ ਜਿਯ ਤੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਨ ਡਾਰਾ ॥੬॥
auhi ddar jiy te maar na ddaaraa |6|
ਰੈਨਿ ਸਿਗਰ ਤਿਹ ਸੋਨ ਨ ਦਿਯੋ ॥
rain sigar tih son na diyo |
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੁਤ ਕਹ ਤ੍ਰਾਸਿਤ ਬਹੁ ਕਿਯੋ ॥
nrip sut keh traasit bahu kiyo |
ਚਲੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਆਈ ॥
chalee khabar raajaa prat aaee |
ਭੂਤ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਬੁਲਾਈ ॥੭॥
bhoot naas kar le bulaaee |7|
ਭੂਤ ਹਤਾ ਇਕ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਉਚਾਰੈ ॥
bhoot hataa ik mantr uchaarai |
ਬੀਸ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਪੜਿ ਬੀਰ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ॥
bees mantr parr beer pukaarai |
ਕਿਸਹੂੰ ਪਕਰਿ ਚੀਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਈ ॥
kisahoon pakar cheer kar deee |
ਕਾਹੂੰ ਪਕਰਿ ਰਾਨ ਤਰ ਲੇਈ ॥੮॥
kaahoon pakar raan tar leee |8|
ਜਬ ਸਭ ਸਕਲ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
jab sabh sakal mantr kar haare |
ਤਬ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਤਨ ਬੀਰ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ॥
tab ih bidh tan beer pukaare |
ਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਮੋਰ ਇਹਾ ਚਲਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
je gur mor ihaa chal aavai |
ਰਾਜ ਕੁਅਰ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੯॥

ਕਹਾ ਤੋਰ ਗੁਰ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਤੈਯੈ ॥

ਜਿਹ ਤਿਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਹ︀ਯਾਂ ਲ︀ਯੈਯੈ ॥੧੦॥

ਜਵਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਤਾਯੋ ॥

ਨਾਰਿ ਤਿਸੀ ਕਾ ਭੇਸ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥
naar tisee kaa bhes banaayo |
ਨ੍ਰਿਪਹਿ ਠੌਰ ਭਾਖਤ ਭਯੋ ਜਹਾ ॥

ਬੈਠੀ ਜਾਹਿ ਚੰਚਲਾ ਤਹਾ ॥੧੧॥

ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਤਹ ਭੂਪ ਸਿਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥

ਤਿਹੀ ਰੂਪ ਤਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
tihee roop tar purakh nihaariyo |
ਜਿਹ ਤਿਹ ਬਿਧ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਬਿਰਮਾਯੋ ॥
jih tih bidh taa kau biramaayo |
ਅਪੁਨੇ ਧਾਮ ਤਾਹਿ ਲੈ ਆਯੋ ॥੧੨॥

ਰਾਜ ਕੁਅਰ ਤਾ ਕਹ ਦਰਸਾਯੋ ॥

ਬਚਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥

ਸਾਹੁ ਸੁਤਾ ਕੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਤਾਯੋ ॥
saahu sutaa ke naam jataayo |
ਸੋ ਪਤਿਬ੍ਰਤਾ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਿਵਾਵਹੁ ॥

ਜੌ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੁਤਹਿ ਜਿਯਾਯੋ ਚਾਹਹੁ ॥੧੪॥

ਜੌ ਯਹ ਤਾਹਿ ਬ︀ਯਾਹਿ ਲ︀ਯਾਵੈ ॥

ਰੈਨਿ ਦਿਵਸ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਲਪਟਾਵੈ ॥

ਅਵਰ ਨਾਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਿਕਟ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

ਲੈ ਆਗ︀ਯਾ ਤਿਹ ਆਸ੍ਰਮ ਗਈ ॥

ਧਾਰਤ ਭੇਸ ਨਾਰਿ ਕਾ ਭਈ ॥੧੬॥
