O Lord of the Universe, O Lord of the World, O Dear Merciful Beloved. ||1||Pause||
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਸਖੇ ਦੀਨ ਦਰਦ ਨਿਵਾਰ ॥੧॥
praan naath anaath sakhe deen darad nivaar |1|
You are the Master of the breath of life, the Companion of the lost and forsaken, the Destroyer of the pains of the poor. ||1||
ਹੇ ਸਮ੍ਰਥ ਅਗਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਇਆ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
he samrath agam pooran mohi meaa dhaar |2|
O All-powerful, Inaccessible, Perfect Lord, please shower me with Your Mercy. ||2||
ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰ ॥੩॥੮॥੩੦॥
andh koop mahaa bheaan naanak paar utaar |3|8|30|
Please, carry Nanak across the terrible, deep dark pit of the world to the other side. ||3||8||30||

ਚਕਵੀ ਨੈਨ ਨਂੀਦ ਨਹਿ ਚਾਹੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਨਂੀਦ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
chakavee nain naneed neh chaahai bin pir naneed na paaee |
The chakvi bird does not long for sleepy eyes; without her beloved, she does not sleep.
ਸੂਰੁ ਚਰ੍ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਦੇਖੈ ਨੈਨੀ ਨਿਵਿ ਨਿਵਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਾਂਈ ॥੧॥
soor charhai priau dekhai nainee niv niv laagai paanee |1|
When the sun rises, she sees her beloved with her eyes; she bows and touches his feet. ||1||
ਪਿਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
pir bhaavai prem sakhaaee |
The Love of my Beloved is pleasing; it is my Companion and Support.
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੜੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਗਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਐਸੀ ਪਿਆਸ ਤਿਸਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tis bin gharree nahee jag jeevaa aisee piaas tisaaee |1| rahaau |
Without Him, I cannot live in this world even for an instant; such is my hunger and thirst. ||1||Pause||
ਸਰਵਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਆਕਾਸੀ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥
saravar kamal kiran aakaasee bigasai sehaj subhaaee |
The lotus in the pool blossoms forth intuitively and naturally, with the rays of the sun in the sky.
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਨੀ ਅਭ ਐਸੀ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੨॥
preetam preet banee abh aisee jotee jot milaaee |2|
Such is the love for my Beloved which imbues me; my light has merged into the Light. ||2||
ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕੁ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਟੇਰੈ ਬਿਲਪ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਈ ॥
chaatrik jal bin priau priau tterai bilap karai bilalaaee |
Without water, the rainbird cries out, "Pri-o! Pri-o! - Beloved! Beloved!" It cries and wails and laments.
ਘਨਹਰ ਘੋਰ ਦਸੌ ਦਿਸਿ ਬਰਸੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਪਿਆਸ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
ghanahar ghor dasau dis barasai bin jal piaas na jaaee |3|
The thundering clouds rain down in the ten directions; its thirst is not quenched until it catches the rain-drop in its mouth. ||3||
ਮੀਨ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਉਪਜੈ ਜਲ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
meen nivaas upajai jal hee te sukh dukh purab kamaaee |
The fish lives in water, from which it was born. It finds peace and pleasure according to its past actions.
ਖਿਨੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਪਲੁ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਰਨੁ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਾਂਈ ॥੪॥
khin til reh na sakai pal jal bin maran jeevan tis taanee |4|
It cannot survive without water for a moment, even for an instant. Life and death depend on it. ||4||
ਧਨ ਵਾਂਢੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਦੇਸ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਸਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਠਾਈਁ ॥
dhan vaandtee pir des nivaasee sache gur peh sabad patthaaee |
The soul-bride is separated from her Husband Lord, who lives in His Own Country. He sends the Shabad, His Word, through the True Guru.
ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੀ ਹਰਖਾਈ ॥੫॥
gun sangreh prabh ridai nivaasee bhagat ratee harakhaaee |5|
She gathers virtues, and enshrines God within her heart. Imbued with devotion, she is happy. ||5||
ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਕਰੈ ਸਭੈ ਹੈ ਜੇਤੀ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਪਾਈਁ ॥
priau priau karai sabhai hai jetee gur bhaavai priau paaee |
Everyone cries out, "Beloved! Beloved!" But she alone finds her Beloved, who is pleasing to the Guru.
ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਨਾਲੇ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸਚਿ ਸੰਗੇ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੬॥
priau naale sad hee sach sange nadaree mel milaaee |6|
Our Beloved is always with us; through the Truth, He blesses us with His Grace, and unites us in His Union. ||6||
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਉ ਜੀਉ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
sabh meh jeeo jeeo hai soee ghatt ghatt rahiaa samaaee |
He is the life of the soul in each and every soul; He permeates and pervades each and every heart.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੭॥
gur parasaad ghar hee paragaasiaa sahaje sehaj samaaee |7|
By Guru's Grace, He is revealed within the home of my heart; I am intuitively, naturally, absorbed into Him. ||7||
ਅਪਨਾ ਕਾਜੁ ਸਵਾਰਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤੇ ਗੋਸਾਂਈਁ ॥
apanaa kaaj savaarahu aape sukhadaate gosaanee |
He Himself shall resolve all your affairs, when you meet with the Giver of peace, the Lord of the World.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਪਤਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੮॥੧॥
gur parasaad ghar hee pir paaeaa tau naanak tapat bujhaaee |8|1|
By Guru's Grace, you shall find your Husband Lord within your own home; then, O Nanak, the fire within you shall be quenched. ||8||1||

ਜਾਗਤੁ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੈ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
jaagat jaag rahai gur sevaa bin har mai ko naahee |
Remain awake and aware, serving the Guru; except for the Lord, no one is mine.
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਆਚੁ ਕਾਚੁ ਢਰਿ ਪਾਂਹੀ ॥੧॥
anik jatan kar rehan na paavai aach kaach dtar paanhee |1|
Even by making all sorts of efforts, you shall not remain here; it shall melt like glass in the fire. ||1||
ਇਸੁ ਤਨ ਧਨ ਕਾ ਕਹਹੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਕੈਸਾ ॥
eis tan dhan kaa kahahu garab kaisaa |
Tell me - why are you so proud of your body and wealth?
ਬਿਨਸਤ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਵਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬਿ ਖਪੈ ਜਗੁ ਐਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
binasat baar na laagai bavare haumai garab khapai jag aisaa |1| rahaau |
They shall vanish in an instant; O madman, this is how the world is wasting away, in egotism and pride. ||1||Pause||
ਜੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਰਖਵਾਰੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਪਰਖੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
jai jagadees prabhoo rakhavaare raakhai parakhai soee |
Hail to the Lord of the Universe, God, our Saving Grace; He judges and saves the mortal beings.
ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਤੁਮੑ ਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥
jetee hai tetee tujh hee te tuma sar avar na koee |2|
All that is, belongs to You. No one else is equal to You. ||2||
ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਇ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਜਨੁ ॥
jeea upaae jugat vas keenee aape guramukh anjan |
Creating all beings and creatures, their ways and means are under Your control; You bless the Gurmukhs with the ointment of spiritual wisdom.
ਅਮਰੁ ਅਨਾਥ ਸਰਬ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੋਰਾ ਕਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਲ ਭਰਮ ਭੈ ਖੰਜਨੁ ॥੩॥
amar anaath sarab sir moraa kaal bikaal bharam bhai khanjan |3|
My Eternal, Unmastered Lord is over the heads of all. He is the Destroyer of death and rebirth, doubt and fear. ||3||
ਕਾਗਦ ਕੋਟੁ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਹੈ ਬਪੁਰੋ ਰੰਗਨਿ ਚਿਹਨ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
kaagad kott ihu jag hai bapuro rangan chihan chaturaaee |
This wretched world is a fortress of paper, of color and form and clever tricks.
ਨਾਨੑੀ ਸੀ ਬੂੰਦ ਪਵਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵੈ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਤਾਈਁ ॥੪॥
naanaee see boond pavan pat khovai janam marai khin taaee |4|
A tiny drop of water or a little puff of wind destroys its glory; in an instant, its life is ended. ||4||
ਨਦੀ ਉਪਕੰਠਿ ਜੈਸੇ ਘਰੁ ਤਰਵਰੁ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
nadee upakantth jaise ghar taravar sarapan ghar ghar maahee |
It is like a tree-house near the bank of a river, with a serpent's den in that house.
ਉਲਟੀ ਨਦੀ ਕਹਾਂ ਘਰੁ ਤਰਵਰੁ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਡਸੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਂਹੀ ॥੫॥
aulattee nadee kahaan ghar taravar sarapan ddasai doojaa man maanhee |5|
When the river overflows, what happens to the tree house? The snake bites, like duality in the mind. ||5||
ਗਾਰੁੜ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਰੀ ॥
gaarurr gur giaan dhiaan gur bachanee bikhiaa guramat jaaree |
Through the magic spell of the Guru's spiritual wisdom, and meditation on the Word of the Guru's Teachings, vice and corruption are burnt away.
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਹੇਂਵ ਭਏ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ॥੬॥
man tan henv bhe sach paaeaa har kee bhagat niraaree |6|
The mind and body are cooled and soothed and Truth is obtained, through the wondrous and unique devotional worship of the Lord. ||6||
ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆਂ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
jetee hai tetee tudh jaachai too sarab jeean deaalaa |
All that exists begs of You; You are merciful to all beings.
ਤੁਮੑਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥੭॥
tumaree saran pare pat raakhahu saach milai gopaalaa |7|
I seek Your Sanctuary; please save my honor, O Lord of the World, and bless me with Truth. ||7||
ਬਾਧੀ ਧੰਧਿ ਅੰਧ ਨਹੀ ਸੂਝੈ ਬਧਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
baadhee dhandh andh nahee soojhai badhik karam kamaavai |
Bound in worldly affairs and entanglements, the blind one does not understand; he acts like a murderous butcher.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਬੂਝਸਿ ਸਚ ਮਨਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੮॥
satigur milai ta soojhas boojhas sach man giaan samaavai |8|
But if he meets with the True Guru, then he comprehends and understands, and his mind is imbued with true spiritual wisdom. ||8||
ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਦੇਹ ਸਾਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਾਚੀ ਮੈ ਪੂਛਉ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ॥
niragun deh saach bin kaachee mai poochhau gur apanaa |
Without the Truth, this worthless body is false; I have consulted my Guru on this.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਜਗੁ ਸੁਪਨਾ ॥੯॥੨॥
naanak so prabh prabhoo dikhaavai bin saache jag supanaa |9|2|
O Nanak, that God has revealed God to me; without the Truth, all the world is just a dream. ||9||2||

ਜਾਨੁਕ ਦੁਤਿਯ ਮੈਨ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ॥੧॥
jaanuk dutiy main kee moorat |1|
ਅਛ੍ਰਾ ਦੇਇ ਸਦਨ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
achhraa dee sadan tih naaree |
ਕਨਕ ਅਵਟਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਜਨ ਢਾਰੀ ॥
kanak avatt saachai jan dtaaree |
ਅਪਸਰ ਮਤੀ ਸੁਤਾ ਤਿਹ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
apasar matee sutaa tih sohai |
ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਨਾਗ ਅਸੁਰ ਮਨ ਮੋਹੈ ॥੨॥
sur nar naag asur man mohai |2|
ਸੁਰਿਦ ਸੈਨ ਇਕ ਸਾਹ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਤਹ ॥
surid sain ik saah putr tah |
ਜਿਹ ਸਮ ਦੂਸਰ ਭਯੋ ਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਹ ॥
jih sam doosar bhayo na meh mah |
ਰਾਜ ਸੁਤਾ ਤਿਹ ਊਪਰ ਅਟਕੀ ॥
raaj sutaa tih aoopar attakee |
ਬਿਸਰਿ ਗਈ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਸੁਧਿ ਘਟ ਕੀ ॥੩॥
bisar gee sabh hee sudh ghatt kee |3|
ਚਤੁਰਿ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਤਹਾ ਪਠਾਈ ॥
chatur sahacharee tahaa patthaaee |
ਨਾਰਿ ਭੇਸ ਕਰਿ ਤਿਹ ਲੈ ਆਈ ॥
naar bhes kar tih lai aaee |
ਜਬ ਵਹੁ ਤਰੁਨ ਤਰੁਨਿਯਹਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
jab vahu tarun taruniyeh paayo |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਜਿ ਗਰੇ ਲਗਾਯੋ ॥੪॥
bhaat bhaat bhaj gare lagaayo |4|
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੇ ਆਸਨ ਲੈ ਕੈ ॥
bhaat bhaat ke aasan lai kai |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਨ ਚੁੰਬਨ ਕੈ ਕੈ ॥
bhaat bhaat tan chunban kai kai |
ਤਿਹ ਤਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਬਿਰਮਾਯੋ ॥
tih tih bidh taa ko biramaayo |
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਜੈਬੋ ਤਿਨਹੂੰ ਸੁ ਭੁਲਾਯੋ ॥੫॥
grih jaibo tinahoon su bhulaayo |5|
ਸਖੀ ਭੇਸ ਕਹ ਧਾਰੇ ਰਹੈ ॥
sakhee bhes keh dhaare rahai |
ਸੋਈ ਕਰੈ ਜੁ ਅਬਲਾ ਕਹੈ ॥
soee karai ju abalaa kahai |
ਰੋਜ ਭਜੈ ਆਸਨ ਤਿਹ ਲੈ ਕੈ ॥
roj bhajai aasan tih lai kai |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਾ ਕਹੁ ਸੁਖ ਦੈ ਕੈ ॥੬॥
bhaat bhaat taa kahu sukh dai kai |6|
ਪਿਤ ਤਿਹ ਨਿਰਖੈ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
pit tih nirakhai bhed na jaanai |
ਦੁਹਿਤਾ ਕੀ ਤਿਹ ਸਖੀ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨੈ ॥
duhitaa kee tih sakhee pramaanai |
ਭੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਜੜ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਲਹਹੀ ॥
bhed abhed jarr koe na lahahee |
ਵਾ ਕੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਖਵਾਸਿਨਿ ਕਰਹੀ ॥੭॥
vaa kee taeh khavaasin karahee |7|
ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਦੁਹਿਤਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਨਿਹਾਰਤ ॥
eik din duhitaa pitaa nihaarat |
ਭਈ ਖੇਲ ਕੇ ਬੀਚ ਮਹਾ ਰਤ ॥
bhee khel ke beech mahaa rat |
ਤਵਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਹ ਪੁਰਖ ਉਚਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
tavan purakh keh purakh uchar kai |
ਭਰਤਾ ਕਰਾ ਸੁਯੰਬਰ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ॥੮॥
bharataa karaa suyanbar kar kai |8|
ਬੈਠੀ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਸੋਕ ਮਨ ਧਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
baitthee bahur sok man dhar kai |
ਸੁਨਤ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
sunat maat pit bachan uchar kai |
ਕਹ ਇਹ ਕਰੀ ਲਖਹੁ ਹਮਰੀ ਗਤਿ ॥
keh ih karee lakhahu hamaree gat |
ਮੁਹਿ ਇਨ ਦੀਨ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਪਤਿ ॥੯॥

ਅਬ ਮੁਹਿ ਭਈ ਇਹੈ ਸਹਚਰਿ ਪਤਿ ॥

ਤੌ ਇਹ ਨਾਰਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਜਾਹੀ ॥੧੦॥

ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਤੇ ਇਹੈ ਪੁਰਖ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਜਾਹੀ ॥

ਜੌ ਕਛੁ ਸਤ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਹਿ ਆਹੀ ॥
jau kachh sat mere meh aahee |
ਯਹ ਅਬ ਜੂਨਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
yeh ab joon purakh kee paavai |
ਮਦਨ ਭੋਗ ਮੁਰਿ ਸੰਗ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੧੧॥

ਚਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਯੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਇਨ ਬਚਨਨ ॥
chakrit bhayo raajaa in bachanan |
ਰਾਨੀ ਸਹਿਤ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕਿਯੋ ਮਨ ॥
raanee sahit bichaar kiyo man |
ਦੁਹਿਤਾ ਕਹਾ ਕਹਤ ਬੈਨਨ ਕਹ ॥
duhitaa kahaa kehat bainan kah |
ਅਚਰਜ ਸੋ ਆਵਤ ਹੈ ਜਿਯ ਮਹ ॥੧੨॥

ਜਬ ਤਿਹ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਛੋਰਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਲਹਾ ॥
jab tih basatr chhor nrip lahaa |
ਨ੍ਰਿਕਸ੍ਰਯੋ ਵਹੈ ਜੁ ਦੁਹਿਤਾ ਕਹਾ ॥
nrikasrayo vahai ju duhitaa kahaa |
ਅਧਿਕ ਸਤੀ ਤਾ ਕਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
adhik satee taa keh kar jaanaa |
ਭਲਾ ਬੁਰਾ ਨਹਿ ਮੂੜ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧੩॥
