Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਤੇਰੀਆ ਖਾਣੀ ਤੇਰੀਆ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

tereea khaanee tereea baanee |

The four sources of creation are Yours; the spoken word is Yours.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥

bin naavai sabh bharam bhulaanee |

Without the Name, all are deluded by doubt.

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥

gur sevaa te har naam paaeaa bin satigur koe na paavaniaa |1|

Serving the Guru, the Lord's Name is obtained. Without the True Guru, no one can receive it. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥

hau vaaree jeeo vaaree har setee chit laavaniaa |

I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who focus their consciousness on the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਸਚਾ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਹਜੇ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

har sachaa gur bhagatee paaeeai sahaje man vasaavaniaa |1| rahaau |

Through devotion to the Guru, the True One is found; He comes to abide in the mind, with intuitive ease. ||1||Pause||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

satigur seve taa sabh kichh paae |

Serving the True Guru, all things are obtained.

ਜੇਹੀ ਮਨਸਾ ਕਰਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

jehee manasaa kar laagai tehaa fal paae |

As are the desires one harbors, so are the rewards one receives.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਵਥੂ ਕਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥

satigur daataa sabhanaa vathoo kaa poorai bhaag milaavaniaa |2|

The True Guru is the Giver of all things; through perfect destiny, He is met. ||2||

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਇਕੁ ਨ ਧਿਆਏ ॥

eihu man mailaa ik na dhiaae |

This mind is filthy and polluted; it does not meditate on the One.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਬਹੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥

antar mail laagee bahu doojai bhaae |

Deep within, it is soiled and stained by the love of duality.

ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਭਵੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਵਧੇਰੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥

tatt teerath disantar bhavai ahankaaree hor vadherai haumai mal laavaniaa |3|

The egotists may go on pilgrimages to holy rivers, sacred shrines and foreign lands, but they only gather more of the dirt of egotism. ||3||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਮਲੁ ਜਾਏ ॥

satigur seve taa mal jaae |

Serving the True Guru, filth and pollution are removed.

ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥

jeevat marai har siau chit laae |

Those who focus their consciousness on the Lord remain dead while yet alive.

ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥

har niramal sach mail na laagai sach laagai mail gavaavaniaa |4|

The True Lord is Pure; no filth sticks to Him. Those who are attached to the True One have their filth washed away. ||4||

ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਅੰਧ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥

baajh guroo hai andh gubaaraa |

Without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness.

ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥

agiaanee andhaa andh andhaaraa |

The ignorant ones are blind-there is only utter darkness for them.

ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੇ ਕੀੜੇ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਚਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥

bisattaa ke keerre bisattaa kamaaveh fir bisattaa maeh pachaavaniaa |5|

The maggots in manure do filthy deeds, and in filth they rot and putrefy. ||5||

ਮੁਕਤੇ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

mukate seve mukataa hovai |

Serving the Lord of Liberation, liberation is achieved.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਸਬਦੇ ਖੋਵੈ ॥

haumai mamataa sabade khovai |

The Word of the Shabad eradicates egotism and possessiveness.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਚਾ ਸੇਵੀ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥

anadin har jeeo sachaa sevee poorai bhaag gur paavaniaa |6|

So serve the Dear True Lord, night and day. By perfect good destiny, the Guru is found. ||6||

ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

aape bakhase mel milaae |

He Himself forgives and unites in His Union.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਏ ॥

poore gur te naam nidh paae |

From the Perfect Guru, the Treasure of the Naam is obtained.

ਸਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਦਾ ਮਨੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਗਵਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥

sachai naam sadaa man sachaa sach seve dukh gavaavaniaa |7|

By the True Name, the mind is made true forever. Serving the True Lord, sorrow is driven out. ||7||

ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਦੂਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੁ ॥

sadaa hajoor door na jaanahu |

He is always close at hand-do not think that He is far away.

ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ॥

gurasabadee har antar pachhaanahu |

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, recognize the Lord deep within your own being.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧੧॥੧੨॥

naanak naam milai vaddiaaee poore gur te paavaniaa |8|11|12|

O Nanak, through the Naam, glorious greatness is received. Through the Perfect Guru, the Naam is obtained. ||8||11||12||

Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਐਥੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਸਾਚੇ ॥

aithai saache su aagai saache |

Those who are True here, are True hereafter as well.

ਮਨੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਾਚੇ ॥

man sachaa sachai sabad raache |

That mind is true, which is attuned to the True Shabad.

ਸਚਾ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥

sachaa seveh sach kamaaveh sacho sach kamaavaniaa |1|

They serve the True One, and practice Truth; they earn Truth, and only Truth. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥

hau vaaree jeeo vaaree sachaa naam man vasaavaniaa |

I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those whose minds are filled with the True Name.

ਸਚੇ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

sache seveh sach samaaveh sache ke gun gaavaniaa |1| rahaau |

They serve the True One, and are absorbed into the True One, singing the Glorious Praises of the True One. ||1||Pause||

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥

panddit parreh saad na paaveh |

The Pandits, the religious scholars read, but they do not taste the essence.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਭਰਮਾਵਹਿ ॥

doojai bhaae maaeaa man bharamaaveh |

In love with duality and Maya, their minds wander, unfocused.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਭ ਸੁਧਿ ਗਵਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥

maaeaa mohi sabh sudh gavaaee kar avagan pachhotaavaniaa |2|

The love of Maya has displaced all their understanding; making mistakes, they live in regret. ||2||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਤਤੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

satigur milai taa tat paae |

But if they should meet the True Guru, then they obtain the essence of reality;

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

har kaa naam man vasaae |

the Name of the Lord comes to dwell in their minds.

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੈ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਕਾ ਦਰੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥

sabad marai man maarai apunaa mukatee kaa dar paavaniaa |3|

Those who die in the Shabad and subdue their own minds, obtain the door of liberation. ||3||

ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਾਟੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥

kilavikh kaattai krodh nivaare |

They erase their sins, and eliminate their anger;

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

gur kaa sabad rakhai ur dhaare |

they keep the Guru's Shabad clasped tightly to their hearts.

ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥

sach rate sadaa bairaagee haumai maar milaavaniaa |4|

Those who are attuned to Truth, remain balanced and detached forever. Subduing their egotism, they are united with the Lord. ||4||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥

antar ratan milai milaaeaa |

Deep within the nucleus of the self is the jewel; we receive it only if the Lord inspires us to receive it.

ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

tribidh manasaa tribidh maaeaa |

The mind is bound by the three dispositions-the three modes of Maya.

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੋਨੀ ਥਕੇ ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥

parr parr panddit monee thake chauthe pad kee saar na paavaniaa |5|

Reading and reciting, the Pandits, the religious scholars, and the silent sages have grown weary, but they have not found the supreme essence of the fourth state. ||5||

ਆਪੇ ਰੰਗੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਚੜਾਏ ॥

aape range rang charraae |

The Lord Himself dyes us in the color of His Love.

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਰਾਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਰੰਗਾਏ ॥

se jan raate gur sabad rangaae |

Only those who are steeped in the Word of the Guru's Shabad are so imbued with His Love.

ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਚੜਿਆ ਅਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥

har rang charriaa at apaaraa har ras ras gun gaavaniaa |6|

Imbued with the most beautiful color of the Lord's Love, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, with great pleasure and joy. ||6||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

guramukh ridh sidh sach sanjam soee |

To the Gurmukh, the True Lord is wealth, miraculous spiritual powers and strict self-discipline.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

guramukh giaan naam mukat hoee |

Through the spiritual wisdom of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the Gurmukh is liberated.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥

guramukh kaar sach kamaaveh sache sach samaavaniaa |7|

The Gurmukh practices Truth, and is absorbed in the Truest of the True. ||7||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ॥

guramukh thaape thaap uthaape |

The Gurmukh realizes that the Lord alone creates, and having created, He destroys.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ॥

guramukh jaat pat sabh aape |

To the Gurmukh, the Lord Himself is social class, status and all honor.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧੨॥੧੩॥

naanak guramukh naam dhiaae naame naam samaavaniaa |8|12|13|

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs meditate on the Naam; through the Naam, they merge in the Naam. ||8||12||13||

ਬਲੀ ਬੈਰ ਰੁਝੇ ॥

ਸਮੂਹ ਸਾਰ ਜੁਝੇ ॥

samooh saar jujhe |

The mighty enemies are busy in fighting with all their weapons.

ਸੰਭਾਰੇ ਹਥੀਯਾਰੰ ॥

sanbhaare hatheeyaaran |

ਬਕੈ ਮਾਰੁ ਮਾਰੰ ॥੫੧॥੨੦੭॥

bakai maar maaran |51|207|

Holding their arms, they are shouting “kill, kill”.51.207.

ਸਬੈ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਜੇ ॥

sabai sasatr saje |

ਮਹਾਬੀਰ ਗਜੇ ॥

mahaabeer gaje |

Being completely dressed with their weapons the brave fighters are roaring.

ਸਰੰ ਓਘ ਛੁਟੇ ॥

saran ogh chhutte |

ਕੜਕਾਰੁ ਉਠੇ ॥੫੨॥੨੦੮॥

karrakaar utthe |52|208|

There has been a volley of arrows producing hissing sounds.52.208.

ਬਜੈ ਬਾਦ੍ਰਿਤੇਅੰ ॥

bajai baadritean |

ਹਸੈ ਗਾਧ੍ਰਬੇਅੰ ॥

hasai gaadhrabean |

Various types of musical instruments are being played and the Gandharvas are laughing.

ਝੰਡਾ ਗਡ ਜੁਟੇ ॥

jhanddaa gadd jutte |

ਸਰੰ ਸੰਜ ਫੁਟੇ ॥੫੩॥੨੦੯॥

saran sanj futte |53|209|

The warriors after fixing their banners firmly are busy in fighting and their armours are being torn with arrows.53.209.

ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਉਠੇ ॥

ਸਰੰ ਬ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਬੁਠੇ ॥

saran brisatt butthe |

From all the four sides, the arrows are being showered.

ਕਰੋਧੀ ਕਰਾਲੰ ॥

ਬਕੈ ਬਿਕਰਾਲੰ ॥੫੪॥੨੧੦॥

The fierce and frightful warriors are busy in various types of prattle.54.210.

BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA

ਕਿਤੇ ਕੁਠੀਅੰ ਬੁਠੀਅੰ ਬ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਬਾਣੰ ॥

kite kuttheean buttheean brisatt baanan |

Somewhere the brave fighters are being chopped and somewhere the arrows are being showered.

ਰਣੰ ਡੁਲੀਯੰ ਬਾਜ ਖਾਲੀ ਪਲਾਣੰ ॥

ranan dduleeyan baaj khaalee palaanan |

The horses without saddles are lying in dust in the battlefield.

ਜੁਝੇ ਜੋਧਿਯੰ ਬੀਰ ਦੇਵੰ ਅਦੇਵੰ ॥

jujhe jodhiyan beer devan adevan |

The warriors of gods and demons both are fighting against one another.

ਸਭੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਜਾ ਮਨੋ ਸਾਤਨੇਵੰ ॥੫੫॥੨੧੧॥

sabhe sasatr saajaa mano saatanevan |55|211|

It appears that the dreadful warriors are Bhisham Pitamahas.55.211.

ਗਜੇ ਗਜੀਯੰ ਸਰਬ ਸਜੇ ਪਵੰਗੰ ॥

gaje gajeeyan sarab saje pavangan |

The decorated horses and elephants are thundering

ਜੁਧੰ ਜੁਟੀਯੰ ਜੋਧ ਛੁਟੇ ਖਤੰਗੰ ॥

judhan jutteeyan jodh chhutte khatangan |

And the arrows of brave warriors are being shot.

ਤੜਕੇ ਤਬਲੰ ਝੜੰਕੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਣੰ ॥

tarrake tabalan jharranke kripaanan |

The clatter of swords and the resounding of trumpets

ਸੜਕਾਰ ਸੇਲੰ ਰਣੰਕੇ ਨਿਸਾਣੰ ॥੫੬॥੨੧੨॥

sarrakaar selan rananke nisaanan |56|212|

Along the sounds of daggers and drums are being heard.56.212.

ਢਮਾ ਢਮ ਢੋਲੰ ਢਲਾ ਢੁਕ ਢਾਲੰ ॥

dtamaa dtam dtolan dtalaa dtuk dtaalan |

The sounds of drums and shields resound continuously

ਗਹਾ ਜੂਹ ਗਜੇ ਹਯੰ ਹਲਚਾਲੰ ॥

gahaa jooh gaje hayan halachaalan |

And the horses running hither and thither have cused consternation.

ਸਟਾ ਸਟ ਸੈਲੰ ਖਹਾ ਖੂਨਿ ਖਗੰ ॥

sattaa satt sailan khahaa khoon khagan |

The daggers are being struck violently and the swords are besmeared with blood.

ਤੁਟੇ ਚਰਮ ਬਰਮੰ ਉਠੇ ਨਾਲ ਅਗੰ ॥੫੭॥੨੧੩॥

tutte charam baraman utthe naal agan |57|213|

Te armours on the bodies of the warriors are breaking and the limbs are coming out with them.57.213.

ਉਠੇ ਅਗਿ ਨਾਲੰ ਖਹੇ ਖੋਲ ਖਗੰ ॥

autthe ag naalan khahe khol khagan |

The blows of swords on the helmets create flames of fire.

ਨਿਸਾ ਮਾਵਸੀ ਜਾਣੁ ਮਾਸਾਣ ਜਗੰ ॥

nisaa maavasee jaan maasaan jagan |

And in the utter darkness that has spread, the ghosts and goblins considering it night, have awakened.

ਡਕੀ ਡਾਕਣੀ ਡਾਮਰੂ ਡਉਰ ਡਕੰ ॥

ddakee ddaakanee ddaamaroo ddaur ddakan |

The vampires are belching and the tabors are being played.

ਨਚੇ ਬੀਰ ਬੈਤਾਲ ਭੂਤੰ ਭਭਕੰ ॥੫੮॥੨੧੪॥

nache beer baitaal bhootan bhabhakan |58|214|

And in accompaniment with their sound, the ghosts and evil spirits are dancing.58.214.

ਬੇਲੀ ਬਿਦ੍ਰਮ ਛੰਦ ॥

BELI BINDRAM STNZA

ਸਰਬ ਸਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਆਵਤ ਭੇ ਜਿਤੇ ॥

sarab sasatru aavat bhe jite |

ਸਭ ਕਾਟਿ ਦੀਨ ਦ੍ਰੁਗਾ ਤਿਤੇ ॥

sabh kaatt deen drugaa tite |

All the blows being struck by the weapons have been annulled by the goddess Durga.

ਅਰਿ ਅਉਰ ਜੇਤਿਕੁ ਡਾਰੀਅੰ ॥

ar aaur jetik ddaareean |

ਤੇਉ ਕਾਟਿ ਭੂਮਿ ਉਤਾਰੀਅੰ ॥੫੯॥੨੧੫॥

teo kaatt bhoom utaareean |59|215|

Beside these all other blows, that are being struck, are being annulled and the weapons are thrown on the ground by the goddess.59.215.

ਸਰ ਆਪ ਕਾਲੀ ਛੰਡੀਅੰ ॥

sar aap kaalee chhanddeean |

ਸਰਬਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਹੰਡੀਅੰ ॥

sarabaasatr satr bihanddeean |

Kali herself made use of her weapons and made all the weapons of the demons ineffective.

ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਹੀਨ ਜਬੈ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥

sasatr heen jabai nihaariyo |

ਜੈ ਸਬਦ ਦੇਵਨ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੬੦॥੨੧੬॥

jai sabad devan uchaariyo |60|216|

When the gods saw (Sumbh) without weapons, they began to hail the goddess.60.216.

ਨਭਿ ਮਧਿ ਬਾਜਨ ਬਾਜਹੀ ॥

nabh madh baajan baajahee |

ਅਵਿਲੋਕਿ ਦੇਵਾ ਗਾਜਹੀ ॥

avilok devaa gaajahee |

ਇਕ ਚੋਟਿ ਦੁਸਟ ਬਿਹੰਡੀਯੰ ॥੬੨॥੨੧੮॥
