Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਆਪੁ ਵੰਞਾਏ ਤਾ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

aap vanyaae taa sabh kichh paae |

Those who lose their own selves obtain everything.

ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥

gurasabadee sachee liv laae |

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they enshrine Love for the True one.

ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਘਰਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਕਰਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥

sach vananjeh sach sanghareh sach vaapaar karaavaniaa |1|

They trade in Truth, they gather in Truth, and they deal only in Truth. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥

hau vaaree jeeo vaaree har gun anadin gaavaniaa |

I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, night and day.

ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

hau teraa toon tthaakur meraa sabad vaddiaaee devaniaa |1| rahaau |

I am Yours, You are my Lord and Master. You bestow greatness through the Word of Your Shabad. ||1||Pause||

ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥

velaa vakhat sabh suhaaeaa |

That time, that moment is totally beautiful,

ਜਿਤੁ ਸਚਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

jit sachaa mere man bhaaeaa |

when the True One becomes pleasing to my mind.

ਸਚੇ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥

sache seviai sach vaddiaaee gur kirapaa te sach paavaniaa |2|

Serving the True One, true greatness is obtained. By Guru's Grace, the True One is obtained. ||2||

ਭਾਉ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਏ ॥

bhaau bhojan satigur tutthai paae |

The food of spiritual love is obtained when the True Guru is pleased.

ਅਨ ਰਸੁ ਚੂਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

an ras chookai har ras man vasaae |

Other essences are forgotten, when the Lord's Essence comes to dwell in the mind.

ਸਚੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥

sach santokh sehaj sukh baanee poore gur te paavaniaa |3|

Truth, contentment and intuitive peace and poise are obtained from the Bani, the Word of the Perfect Guru. ||3||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥

satigur na seveh moorakh andh gavaaraa |

The blind and ignorant fools do not serve the True Guru;

ਫਿਰਿ ਓਇ ਕਿਥਹੁ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥

fir oe kithahu paaein mokh duaaraa |

how will they find the gate of salvation?

ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥

mar mar jameh fir fir aaveh jam dar chottaa khaavaniaa |4|

They die and die, over and over again, only to be reborn, over and over again. They are struck down at Death's Door. ||4||

ਸਬਦੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਤਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥

sabadai saad jaaneh taa aap pachhaaneh |

Those who know the essence of the Shabad, understand their own selves.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ॥

niramal baanee sabad vakhaaneh |

Immaculate is the speech of those who chant the Word of the Shabad.

ਸਚੇ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥

sache sev sadaa sukh paaein nau nidh naam man vasaavaniaa |5|

Serving the True One, they find a lasting peace; they enshrine the nine treasures of the Naam within their minds. ||5||

ਸੋ ਥਾਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

so thaan suhaaeaa jo har man bhaaeaa |

Beautiful is that place, which is pleasing to the Lord's Mind.

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

satasangat beh har gun gaaeaa |

There, sitting in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, the Glorious Praises of the Lord are sung.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹਹਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਦੁ ਵਜਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥

anadin har saalaaheh saachaa niramal naad vajaavaniaa |6|

Night and day, the True One is praised; the Immaculate Sound-current of the Naad resounds there. ||6||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖੋਟੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਖੋਟਾ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥

manamukh khottee raas khottaa paasaaraa |

The wealth of the self-willed manmukhs is false, and false is their ostentatious display.

ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਨਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਰਾ ॥

koorr kamaavan dukh laagai bhaaraa |

They practice falsehood, and suffer terrible pain.

ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲੇ ਫਿਰਨਿ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥

bharame bhoole firan din raatee mar janameh janam gavaavaniaa |7|

Deluded by doubt, they wander day and night; through birth and death, they lose their lives. ||7||

ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥

sachaa saahib mai at piaaraa |

My True Lord and Master is very dear to me.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥

poore gur kai sabad adhaaraa |

The Shabad of the Perfect Guru is my Support.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧੦॥੧੧॥

naanak naam milai vaddiaaee dukh sukh sam kar jaananiaa |8|10|11|

O Nanak, one who obtains the Greatness of the Naam, looks upon pain and pleasure as one and the same. ||8||10||11||

ਹੈ ਗੈ ਰਥ ਪੈਦਲ ਕਟੇ ਬਚਿਯੋ ਨ ਜੀਵਤ ਕੋਇ ॥

hai gai rath paidal katte bachiyo na jeevat koe |

The elephants, horses and warriors on foot were all chopped and none could survive.

ਤਬ ਆਪੇ ਨਿਕਸਿਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੁੰਭ ਕਰੈ ਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੩੮॥੧੯੪॥

tab aape nikasiyo nripat sunbh karai so hoe |38|194|

Then the king Sumbh himself marched forward for war and on seeing him it appears that whatever he desires, he will achive.38.194.

ਸਿਵ ਦੂਤੀ ਇਤਿ ਦ੍ਰੁਗਾ ਬੁਲਾਈ ॥

ਕਾਨ ਲਾਗਿ ਨੀਕੈ ਸਮੁਝਾਈ ॥

kaan laag neekai samujhaaee |

On this side, Durga after reflecting, called a female messenger of Shiva and making her conscious gave this message in her ear:

ਸਿਵ ਕੋ ਭੇਜ ਦੀਜੀਐ ਤਹਾ ॥

siv ko bhej deejeeai tahaa |

ਦੈਤ ਰਾਜ ਇਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ ਜਹਾ ॥੩੯॥੧੯੫॥

dait raaj isathit hai jahaa |39|195|

“Send Lord Shiva to the place, where the demon-king is standing.”39.195.

ਸਿਵ ਦੂਤੀ ਜਬ ਇਮ ਸੁਨ ਪਾਵਾ ॥

siv dootee jab im sun paavaa |

ਸਿਵਹਿੰ ਦੂਤ ਕਰਿ ਉਤੈ ਪਠਾਵਾ ॥

sivahin doot kar utai patthaavaa |

When the female messenger of Shiva heard this, she sent Shiva as a messenger of Shiva

ਸਿਵ ਦੂਤੀ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਭਯੋ ਨਾਮਾ ॥

siv dootee taa te bhayo naamaa |

ਜਾਨਤ ਸਕਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਰੁ ਬਾਮਾ ॥੪੦॥੧੯੬॥

jaanat sakal purakh ar baamaa |40|196|

Since that day, the name of Durga became" shiv- Duti" ( the messenger of shiva ), all men and women know this.40.196.

ਸਿਵ ਕਹੀ ਦੈਤ ਰਾਜ ਸੁਨਿ ਬਾਤਾ ॥

siv kahee dait raaj sun baataa |

ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਤੁਮਹੁ ਜਗਮਾਤਾ ॥

eih bidh kahiyo tumahu jagamaataa |

Shiva said to the demon-king, “Listen to my words, the mother of she universe hath said this

ਦੇਵਨ ਕੇ ਦੈ ਕੈ ਠਕੁਰਾਈ ॥

devan ke dai kai tthakuraaee |

ਕੈ ਮਾਡਹੁ ਹਮ ਸੰਗ ਲਰਾਈ ॥੪੧॥੧੯੭॥

kai maaddahu ham sang laraaee |41|197|

“That either you return the kingdom to gods or wage the war with me.”41.197.

ਦੈਤ ਰਾਜ ਇਹ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਮਾਨੀ ॥

dait raaj ih baat na maanee |

ਆਪ ਚਲੇ ਜੂਝਨ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ॥

aap chale joojhan abhimaanee |

The demon-king Sumbh did not accept this proposal and in his pride, marched forward for war.

ਗਰਜਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਕਾਲ ਜ︀ਯੋ ਜਹਾ ॥

garajat kaal kaal jayo jahaa |

ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਭਯੋ ਅਸੁਰ ਪਤਿ ਤਹਾ ॥੪੨॥੧੯੮॥

praapat bhayo asur pat tahaa |42|198|

The place where Kali, like death, was thundering, that demon-king reached there.42.198.

ਚਮਕੀ ਤਹਾ ਅਸਨ ਕੀ ਧਾਰਾ ॥

chamakee tahaa asan kee dhaaraa |

ਨਾਚੇ ਭੂਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਬੈਤਾਰਾ ॥

naache bhoot pret baitaaraa |

There the edges of sword glistened and the ghosts, goblins and evil spirits began to dance.

ਫਰਕੇ ਅੰਧ ਕਬੰਧ ਅਚੇਤਾ ॥

farake andh kabandh achetaa |

ਭਿਭਰੇ ਭਈਰਵ ਭੀਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥੪੩॥੧੯੯॥

bhibhare bheerav bheem anekaa |43|199|

There the blind headless trunks came into motion senselessly. There many Bhairavas and Bhimas began to roam.43.199.

ਤੁਰਹੀ ਢੋਲ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਬਾਜੇ ॥

turahee dtol nagaare baaje |

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਜੋਧਾ ਰਣਿ ਗਾਜੈ ॥

bhaat bhaat jodhaa ran gaajai |

The clarionets, drums and trumpets sounded any many types.

ਢਡਿ ਡਫ ਡਮਰੁ ਡੁਗਡੁਗੀ ਘਨੀ ॥

dtadd ddaf ddamar ddugaddugee ghanee |

ਨਾਇ ਨਫੀਰੀ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਗਨੀ ॥੪੪॥੨੦੦॥

naae nafeeree jaat na ganee |44|200|

The tambourines, tabors etc., were played loudly and the musical instruments like Shahnai etc., were being played in such numbers that they cannot be counted.44.200.

The horses are neighing and the trumpets are resounding.

ਸਜੇ ਸੁ ਬੀਰ ॥

The bedecked warriors are roaring profoundly.45.201.

ਝੁਕੇ ਨਿਝਕ ॥

ਬਜੇ ਉਬਕ ॥

The heroes coming near unhesitatingly are striking blows and jumping.

ਸਜੇ ਸੁਬਾਹ ॥

ਅਛੈ ਉਛਾਹ ॥੪੬॥੨੦੨॥

achhai uchhaah |46|202|

The smart warriors fight each other and the beautiful heroes are bedecking themselves. The heavenly damsels (apsaras) are feeling inspired.46.202.

ਕਟੇ ਕਿਕਾਣ ॥

ਫੁਟੈ ਚਵਾਣ ॥

futtai chavaan |

The horses are being chopped and the faces are being torn.

ਸੂਲੰ ਸੜਾਕ ॥

The sound created by tridents are being heard. 47.203.

ਗਜੇ ਜੁਆਣ ॥

The trumpets are resounding and the youthful warriors are thundering.

The kings and chieftains are bedecked and the elephants are screeching.48.204.

ਫਿਰੇ ਬਾਜੀਯੰ ਤਾਜੀਯੰ ਇਤ ਉਤੰ ॥

fire baajeeyan taajeeyan it utan |

The beautiful horses are roaming hither and thither.

ਗਜੇ ਬਾਰਣੰ ਦਾਰੁਣੰ ਰਾਜ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੰ ॥

gaje baaranan daarunan raaj putran |

The elephants of the princes are roaring dreadfully.

ਬਜੇ ਸੰਖ ਭੇਰੀ ਉਠੈ ਸੰਖ ਨਾਦੰ ॥

baje sankh bheree utthai sankh naadan |

The sound of conches and drums is rising.

ਰਣੰਕੈ ਨਫੀਰੀ ਧੁਣ ਨਿਰਬਿਖਾਦੰ ॥੪੯॥੨੦੫॥

ranankai nafeeree dhun nirabikhaadan |49|205|

The clarionets are being played continuously.49.205.

ਕੜਕੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਣੰ ਸੜਕਾਰ ਸੇਲੰ ॥

karrake kripaanan sarrakaar selan |

The swords and daggers are producing their sounds.

ਉਠੀ ਕੂਹ ਜੂਹੰ ਭਈ ਰੇਲ ਪੇਲੰ ॥

autthee kooh joohan bhee rel pelan |

There is vehement run in the whole battlefield.

ਰੁਲੇ ਤਛ ਮੁਛੰ ਗਿਰੇ ਚਉਰ ਚੀਰੰ ॥

rule tachh muchhan gire chaur cheeran |

The bodies having been chopped and the garments and fly-whisks having been torn have fallen down.

ਕਹੂੰ ਹਥ ਮਥੰ ਕਹੂੰ ਬਰਮ ਬੀਰੰ ॥੫੦॥੨੦੬॥

kahoon hath mathan kahoon baram beeran |50|206|

Somewhere the hands, somewhere the foreheads and somewhere the armours are lying scattered.50.206.
