Maajh, Third Mehl:
ਉਤਪਤਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਸਬਦੇ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
autapat parlau sabade hovai |
Creation and destruction happen through the Word of the Shabad.
ਸਬਦੇ ਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਓਪਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
sabade hee fir opat hovai |
Through the Shabad, creation happens again.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
guramukh varatai sabh aape sachaa guramukh upaae samaavaniaa |1|
The Gurmukh knows that the True Lord is all-pervading. The Gurmukh understands creation and merger. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeo vaaree gur pooraa man vasaavaniaa |
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who enshrine the Perfect Guru within their minds.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਤਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur te saat bhagat kare din raatee gun keh gunee samaavaniaa |1| rahaau |
From the Guru comes peace and tranquility; worship Him with devotion, day and night. Chanting His Glorious Praises, merge into the Glorious Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
guramukh dharatee guramukh paanee |
The Gurmukh sees the Lord on the earth, and the Gurmukh sees Him in the water.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਵਣੁ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਖੇਲੈ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥
guramukh pavan baisantar khelai viddaanee |
The Gurmukh sees Him in wind and fire; such is the wonder of His Play.
ਸੋ ਨਿਗੁਰਾ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
so niguraa jo mar mar jamai nigure aavan jaavaniaa |2|
One who has no Guru, dies over and over again, only to be re-born. One who has no Guru continues coming and going in reincarnation. ||2||
ਤਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਇਕੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
tin karatai ik khel rachaaeaa |
The One Creator has set this play in motion.
ਕਾਇਆ ਸਰੀਰੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kaaeaa sareerai vich sabh kichh paaeaa |
In the frame of the human body, He has placed all things.
ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਕੋਈ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਮਹਲੇ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
sabad bhed koee mehal paae mahale mehal bulaavaniaa |3|
Those few who are pierced through by the Word of the Shabad, obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. He calls them into His Wondrous Palace. ||3||
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਚੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥
sachaa saahu sache vanajaare |
True is the Banker, and true are His traders.
ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਹੇਤਿ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥
sach vananjeh gur het apaare |
They purchase Truth, with infinite love for the Guru.
ਸਚੁ ਵਿਹਾਝਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
sach vihaajheh sach kamaaveh sacho sach kamaavaniaa |4|
They deal in Truth, and they practice Truth. They earn Truth, and only Truth. ||4||
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਕੋ ਵਥੁ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਏ ॥
bin raasee ko vath kiau paae |
Without investment capital, how can anyone acquire merchandise?
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਬਾਏ ॥
manamukh bhoole lok sabaae |
The self-willed manmukhs have all gone astray.
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਸਭ ਖਾਲੀ ਚਲੇ ਖਾਲੀ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
bin raasee sabh khaalee chale khaalee jaae dukh paavaniaa |5|
Without true wealth, everyone goes empty-handed; going empty-handed, they suffer in pain. ||5||
ਇਕਿ ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
eik sach vananjeh gur sabad piaare |
Some deal in Truth, through love of the Guru's Shabad.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰਹਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
aap tareh sagale kul taare |
They save themselves, and save all their ancestors as well.
ਆਏ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੋਏ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
aae se paravaan hoe mil preetam sukh paavaniaa |6|
Very auspicious is the coming of those who meet their Beloved and find peace. ||6||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਮੂੜਾ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਭਾਲੇ ॥
antar vasat moorraa baahar bhaale |
Deep within the self is the secret, but the fool looks for it outside.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥
manamukh andhe fireh betaale |
The blind self-willed manmukhs wander around like demons;
ਜਿਥੈ ਵਥੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਥਹੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
jithai vath hovai tithahu koe na paavai manamukh bharam bhulaavaniaa |7|
but where the secret is, there, they do not find it. The manmukhs are deluded by doubt. ||7||
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥
aape devai sabad bulaae |
He Himself calls us, and bestows the Word of the Shabad.
ਮਹਲੀ ਮਹਲਿ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
mahalee mehal sehaj sukh paae |
The soul-bride finds intuitive peace and poise in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧੩॥੧੪॥
naanak naam milai vaddiaaee aape sun sun dhiaavaniaa |8|13|14|
O Nanak, she obtains the glorious greatness of the Naam; she hears it again and again, and she meditates on it. ||8||13||14||

Maajh, Third Mehl:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣਾਈ ॥
satigur saachee sikh sunaaee |
The True Guru has imparted the True Teachings.
ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਅੰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
har chetahu ant hoe sakhaaee |
Think of the Lord, who shall be your Help and Support in the end.
ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਅਨਾਥੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
har agam agochar anaath ajonee satigur kai bhaae paavaniaa |1|
The Lord is Inaccessible and Incomprehensible. He has no master, and He is not born. He is obtained through love of the True Guru. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeo vaaree aap nivaaraniaa |
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who eliminate selfishness and conceit.
ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aap gavaae taa har paae har siau sehaj samaavaniaa |1| rahaau |
They eradicate selfishness and conceit, and then find the Lord; they are intuitively immersed in the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
poorab likhiaa su karam kamaaeaa |
According to their pre-ordained destiny, they act out their karma.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
satigur sev sadaa sukh paaeaa |
Serving the True Guru, a lasting peace is found.
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
bin bhaagaa gur paaeeai naahee sabadai mel milaavaniaa |2|
Without good fortune, the Guru is not found. Through the Word of the Shabad, they are united in the Lord's Union. ||2||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥
guramukh alipat rahai sansaare |
The Gurmukhs remain unaffected in the midst of the world.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਤਕੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥
gur kai takeeai naam adhaare |
The Guru is their cushion, and the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is their Support.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋਰੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪੇ ਖਪਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
guramukh jor kare kiaa tis no aape khap dukh paavaniaa |3|
Who can oppress the Gurmukh? One who tries shall perish, writhing in pain. ||3||
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧੇ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥
manamukh andhe sudh na kaaee |
The blind self-willed manmukhs have no understanding at all.
ਆਤਮ ਘਾਤੀ ਹੈ ਜਗਤ ਕਸਾਈ ॥
aatam ghaatee hai jagat kasaaee |
They are the assassins of the self, and the butchers of the world.
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਜੂਰੀ ਭਾਰੁ ਪਹੁਚਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
nindaa kar kar bahu bhaar utthaavai bin majooree bhaar pahuchaavaniaa |4|
By continually slandering others, they carry a terrible load, and they carry the loads of others for nothing. ||4||
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਵਾੜੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਾਲੀ ॥
eihu jag vaarree meraa prabh maalee |
This world is a garden, and my Lord God is the Gardener.
ਸਦਾ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਖਾਲੀ ॥
sadaa samaale ko naahee khaalee |
He always takes care of it-nothing is exempt from His Care.
ਜੇਹੀ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਪਾਏ ਤੇਹੀ ਵਰਤੈ ਵਾਸੂ ਵਾਸੁ ਜਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
jehee vaasanaa paae tehee varatai vaasoo vaas janaavaniaa |5|
As is the fragrance which He bestows, so is the fragrant flower known. ||5||
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਰੋਗੀ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
manamukh rogee hai sansaaraa |
The self-willed manmukhs are sick and diseased in the world.
ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
sukhadaataa visariaa agam apaaraa |
They have forgotten the Giver of peace, the Unfathomable, the Infinite.
ਦੁਖੀਏ ਨਿਤਿ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬਿਲਲਾਦੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
dukhee nit fireh bilalaade bin gur saant na paavaniaa |6|
These miserable people wander endlessly, crying out in pain; without the Guru, they find no peace. ||6||
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੇ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jin keete soee bidh jaanai |
The One who created them, knows their condition.
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
aap kare taa hukam pachhaanai |
And if He inspires them, then they realize the Hukam of His Command.
ਜੇਹਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਏ ਤੇਹਾ ਵਰਤੈ ਆਪੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
jehaa andar paae tehaa varatai aape baahar paavaniaa |7|
Whatever He places within them, that is what prevails, and so they outwardly appear. ||7||
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਸਚੇ ਮੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
tis baajhahu sache mai hor na koee |
I know of no other except the True One.
ਜਿਸੁ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਸੋ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
jis laae le so niramal hoee |
Those, whom the Lord attaches to Himself, become pure.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧੪॥੧੫॥
naanak naam vasai ghatt antar jis devai so paavaniaa |8|14|15|
O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within the heart of those, unto whom He has given it. ||8||14||15||

The manner in which, with extreme fury, Kali destroyed the demon-king Sumbh
ਤ੍ਰਯੋ ਸਾਧਨ ਕੇ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਭ ਚਾਬਤ ਜਾਹ ਕਰਾਲ ॥੬੩॥੨੧੯॥
trayo saadhan ke satru sabh chaabat jaah karaal |63|219|
All the enemies of the saints are destroyed in the same manner.63.219.

All of them extremely eulogized the goddess and repeated the mantra known as “Brahm-Kavach”.

sant sanbooh prafulat bhe |
ਦੁਸਟ ਅਰਿਸਟ ਨਾਸ ਹੁਐ ਗਏ ॥੨॥੨੨੧॥
dusatt arisatt naas huai ge |2|221|
All the saints were pleased because the tyrants have been destroyed.2.221.
ਸਾਧਨ ਕੋ ਸੁਖ ਬਢੇ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥
saadhan ko sukh badte anekaa |
ਦਾਨਵ ਦੁਸਟ ਨ ਬਾਚਾ ਏਕਾ ॥
daanav dusatt na baachaa ekaa |
The comfort of the saints increased in many ways and not even one demon could survive.
ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਜਗ ਮਾਈ ॥
sant sahaae sadaa jag maaee |
ਜਹ ਤਹ ਸਾਧਨ ਹੋਇ ਸਹਾਈ ॥੩॥੨੨੨॥
jeh teh saadhan hoe sahaaee |3|222|
The mother of the universe ever helps the saints and is helpful to them everywhere.3.222.

ਨਮੋ ਸੁੰਭ ਹੰਤੀ ਨਮੋ ਕਰੂਰ ਕਾਲੰ ॥

O the Destroyer of Sumbh and dreadful manifestation of Death!

O the manifestation of supreme steel armour, O the destroyer of Mahishasura.

Destroyer of all, the killer of all! I salute Thee.6.225.

O the one showing mercy on Brahma in her delight, O Yog Maya! I salute Thee.

O Bhairavi, Bhavani, Jalandhari and the Destiny through all! I salute Thee.7.226.

Like Apsara (heavenly damsels) and the Padmini women, Thou art the fulfiller of all desires.
ਜਯਾ ਜੋਗਣੀ ਜਗ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਯੰਤੀ ॥
jayaa joganee jag karataa jayantee |
Thou art the conqueror Yogini of all and performer of Yajnas (sacrifices).
ਸੁਭਾ ਸੁਆਮਣੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਜਾ ਸਤ੍ਰੂਹੰਤੀ ॥੩੧॥੨੫੦॥
subhaa suaamanee srisattajaa satraoohantee |31|250|
Thou art the nature of all substances, Thou art the creator of the world and the destroyer of the enemies.31.250.
ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੀ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਪਰੇਯੰ ॥

Thou art pure, holy, ancient, great

Perfect, maya and unconquerable.
ਅਰੂਪੰ ਅਨੂਪੰ ਅਨਾਮੰ ਅਠਾਮੰ ॥
aroopan anoopan anaaman atthaaman |
Thou art formless, unique, nameless and abodeless.
ਅਭੀਅੰ ਅਜੀਤੰ ਮਹਾ ਧਰਮ ਧਾਮੰ ॥੩੨॥੨੫੧॥
abheean ajeetan mahaa dharam dhaaman |32|251|
Thou art fearless, unconquerable and treasure of the great Dharma.32.251.
ਅਛੇਦੰ ਅਭੇਦੰ ਅਕਰਮੰ ਸੁ ਧਰਮੰ ॥
achhedan abhedan akaraman su dharaman |
Thou art indestructible, indistinguishable, deedless and Dhrma-incarnate.
ਨਮੋ ਬਾਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਧਰੇ ਚਰਮ ਬਰਮੰ ॥
namo baan paanee dhare charam baraman |
O the holder of the arrow in Thy hand and wearer of the armour, I salute Thee.

Thou art unconquerable, indistinguishable, formless, eternal

Most powerful, the power of Vamana and art like the fire of the Yajna (sacrifice).
ਨਮੋ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਚਰਬਾਇਣੀ ਗਰਬ ਹਰਣੀ ॥
namo satru charabaaeinee garab haranee |
O the chewer of the enemies and masher of their pride
ਨਮੋ ਤੋਖਣੀ ਸੋਖਣੀ ਸਰਬ ਭਰਣੀ ॥੩੪॥੨੫੩॥
namo tokhanee sokhanee sarab bharanee |34|253|
Sustainer and destroyer in Thy pleasure, I salute Thee.34.253.
ਪਿਲੰਗੀ ਪਵੰਗੀ ਨਮੋ ਚਰਚਿਤੰਗੀ ॥

O the rider of the steed-like lion
ਨਮੋ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਭੂਤ ਹੰਤਾ ਭੜਿੰਗੀ ॥
namo bhaavanee bhoot hantaa bharringee |
O Bhavani of beautiful limbs! Thou art the destroyer of all engaged in the war.
ਨਮੋ ਭੀਮਿ ਸਰੂਪਾ ਨਮੋ ਲੋਕ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
namo bheem saroopaa namo lok maataa |
O the mother of the universe having large body!
ਭਵੀ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਭਵਿਖ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੩੫॥੨੫੪॥
bhavee bhaavanee bhavikhrayaat bidhaataa |35|254|
Thou art the power of Yama, the giver of the fruit of actions performed in the world, Thou art also the power of Brahma! I salute Thee.35.254.

ਬਰੰਦਾਇਣੀ ਦੁਸਟ ਖੰਡੀ ਅਖੰਡੀ ॥੩੬॥੨੫੫॥
barandaaeinee dusatt khanddee akhanddee |36|255|
Thou art the donor of boons and destroyer of tyrants, but Thou Thyself ever remain indivisible.36.255.
ਸਬੈ ਸੰਤ ਉਬਾਰੀ ਬਰੰ ਬ੍ਰਯੂਹ ਦਾਤਾ ॥
sabai sant ubaaree baran brayooh daataa |
O the Saviour of all the saints and the donor of boons to all
ਨਮੋ ਤਾਰਣੀ ਕਾਰਣੀ ਲੋਕ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
namo taaranee kaaranee lok maataa |
The one who ferries across all over the terrible sea of life, the primary cause of all causes, O Bhavani! The mother of the universe.
ਨਮਸਤ︀ਯੰ ਨਮਸਤ︀ਯੰ ਨਮਸਤ︀ਯੰ ਭਵਾਨੀ ॥
namasatayan namasatayan namasatayan bhavaanee |
I salute Thee again and again, O the manifestation of the sword!
ਸਦਾ ਰਾਖ ਲੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕੈ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨੀ ॥੩੭॥੨੫੬॥
