Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਨਾ ਭੈਣਾ ਭਰਜਾਈਆ ਨਾ ਸੇ ਸਸੁੜੀਆਹ ॥
naa bhainaa bharajaaeea naa se sasurreeaah |
Neither the sisters, nor the sisters-in-law, nor the mothers-in-law, shall remain.
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਕੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਹੀਆਹ ॥੧॥
sachaa saak na tuttee gur mele saheeaah |1|
The true relationship with the Lord cannot be broken; it was established by the Lord, O sister soul-brides. ||1||
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
balihaaree gur aapane sad balihaarai jaau |
I am a sacrifice to my Guru; I am forever a sacrifice to Him.
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਏਤਾ ਭਵਿ ਥਕੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਮੇਲਿਮੁ ਦਿਤਮੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur bin etaa bhav thakee gur pir melim ditam milaae |1| rahaau |
Wandering so far without the Guru, I grew weary; now, the Guru has united me in Union with my Husband Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਫੁਫੀ ਨਾਨੀ ਮਾਸੀਆ ਦੇਰ ਜੇਠਾਨੜੀਆਹ ॥
fufee naanee maaseea der jetthaanarreeaah |
Aunts, uncles, grandparents and sisters-in-law
ਆਵਨਿ ਵੰਞਨਿ ਨਾ ਰਹਨਿ ਪੂਰ ਭਰੇ ਪਹੀਆਹ ॥੨॥
aavan vanyan naa rehan poor bhare paheeaah |2|
- they all come and go; they cannot remain. They are like boatloads of passengers embarking. ||2||
ਮਾਮੇ ਤੈ ਮਾਮਾਣੀਆ ਭਾਇਰ ਬਾਪ ਨ ਮਾਉ ॥
maame tai maamaaneea bhaaeir baap na maau |
Uncles, aunts, and cousins of all sorts, cannot remain.
ਸਾਥ ਲਡੇ ਤਿਨ ਨਾਠੀਆ ਭੀੜ ਘਣੀ ਦਰੀਆਉ ॥੩॥
saath ladde tin naattheea bheerr ghanee dareeaau |3|
The caravans are full, and great crowds of them are loading up at the riverbank. ||3||
ਸਾਚਉ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਲੋ ਸਖੀ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਕੰਤੁ ॥
saachau rang rangaavalo sakhee hamaaro kant |
O sister-friends, my Husband Lord is dyed in the color of Truth.
ਸਚਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਸੋ ਸਹੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਵੰਤੁ ॥੪॥
sach vichhorraa naa theeai so sahu rang ravant |4|
She who lovingly remembers her True Husband Lord is not separated from Him again. ||4||
ਸਭੇ ਰੁਤੀ ਚੰਗੀਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ॥
sabhe rutee changeea jit sache siau nehu |
All the seasons are good, in which the soul-bride falls in love with the True Lord.
ਸਾ ਧਨ ਕੰਤੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੁਤੀ ਨਿਸਿ ਡੇਹੁ ॥੫॥
saa dhan kant pachhaaniaa sukh sutee nis ddehu |5|
That soul-bride, who knows her Husband Lord, sleeps in peace, night and day. ||5||
ਪਤਣਿ ਕੂਕੇ ਪਾਤਣੀ ਵੰਞਹੁ ਧ੍ਰੁਕਿ ਵਿਲਾੜਿ ॥
patan kooke paatanee vanyahu dhruk vilaarr |
At the ferry, the ferryman announces, "O travellers, hurry up and cross over."
ਪਾਰਿ ਪਵੰਦੜੇ ਡਿਠੁ ਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੋਹਿਥਿ ਚਾੜਿ ॥੬॥
paar pavandarre dditth mai satigur bohith chaarr |6|
I have seen them crossing over there, on the boat of the True Guru. ||6||
ਹਿਕਨੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਹਿਕਿ ਲਦਿ ਗਏ ਹਿਕਿ ਭਾਰੇ ਭਰ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
hikanee ladiaa hik lad ge hik bhaare bhar naal |
Some are getting on board, and some have already set out; some are weighed down with their loads.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੭॥
jinee sach vananjiaa se sache prabh naal |7|
Those who deal in Truth, remain with their True Lord God. ||7||
ਨਾ ਹਮ ਚੰਗੇ ਆਖੀਅਹ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਦਿਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
naa ham change aakheeah buraa na disai koe |
I am not called good, and I see none who are bad.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੮॥੨॥੧੦॥
naanak haumai maareeai sache jeharraa soe |8|2|10|
O Nanak, one who conquers and subdues his ego, becomes just like the True Lord. ||8||2||10||

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਨਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥
naa jaanaa moorakh hai koee naa jaanaa siaanaa |
I do not believe that anyone is foolish; I do not believe that anyone is clever.
ਸਦਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
sadaa saahib kai range raataa anadin naam vakhaanaa |1|
Imbued forever with the Love of my Lord and Master, I chant His Name, night and day. ||1||
ਬਾਬਾ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹਾ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
baabaa moorakh haa naavai bal jaau |
O Baba, I am so foolish, but I am a sacrifice to the Name.
ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
too karataa too daanaa beenaa terai naam taraau |1| rahaau |
You are the Creator, You are wise and all-seeing. Through Your Name, we are carried across. ||1||Pause||
ਮੂਰਖੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਏਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਨਾਉ ॥
moorakh siaanaa ek hai ek jot due naau |
The same person is foolish and wise; the same light within has two names.
ਮੂਰਖਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿ ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥
moorakhaa sir moorakh hai ji mane naahee naau |2|
The most foolish of the foolish are those who do not believe in the Name. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਲੈ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
gur duaarai naau paaeeai bin satigur palai na paae |
Through the Guru's Gate, the Gurdwara, the Name is obtained. Without the True Guru, it is not received.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਾ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
satigur kai bhaanai man vasai taa ahinis rahai liv laae |3|
Through the Pleasure of the True Guru's Will, the Name comes to dwell in the mind, and then, night and day, one remains lovingly absorbed in the Lord. ||3||
ਰਾਜੰ ਰੰਗੰ ਰੂਪੰ ਮਾਲੰ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਤੇ ਜੂਆਰੀ ॥
raajan rangan roopan maalan joban te jooaaree |
In power, pleasures, beauty, wealth and youth, one gambles his life away.
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬਾਧੇ ਪਾਸੈ ਖੇਲਹਿ ਚਉਪੜਿ ਏਕਾ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
hukamee baadhe paasai kheleh chauparr ekaa saaree |4|
Bound by the Hukam of God's Command, the dice are thrown; he is just a piece in the game of chess. ||4||
ਜਗਿ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ਨਾਉ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ॥
jag chatur siaanaa bharam bhulaanaa naau panddit parreh gaavaaree |
The world is clever and wise, but it is deluded by doubt, and forgets the Name; the Pandit, the religious scholar, studies the scriptures, but he is still a fool.
ਨਾਉ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਬੇਦੁ ਸਮਾਲਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
naau visaareh bed samaaleh bikh bhoole lekhaaree |5|
Forgetting the Name, he dwells upon the Vedas; he writes, but he is confused by his poisonous corruption. ||5||
ਕਲਰ ਖੇਤੀ ਤਰਵਰ ਕੰਠੇ ਬਾਗਾ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਕਜਲੁ ਝਰੈ ॥
kalar khetee taravar kantthe baagaa pahireh kajal jharai |
He is like the crop planted in the salty soil, or the tree growing on the river bank, or the white clothes sprinkled with dirt.
ਏਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਕੀ ਕੋਠੀ ਜੋ ਪੈਸੈ ਸੋ ਗਰਬਿ ਜਰੈ ॥੬॥
ehu sansaar tisai kee kotthee jo paisai so garab jarai |6|
This world is the house of desire; whoever enters it, is burnt down by egotistical pride. ||6||
ਰਯਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਕਹਾ ਸਬਾਏ ਦੁਹੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੋ ਜਾਸੀ ॥
rayat raaje kahaa sabaae duhu antar so jaasee |
Where are all the kings and their subjects? Those who are immersed in duality are destroyed.
ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਰਹਸੀ ਅਲਖੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥੭॥੩॥੧੧॥
kehat naanak gur sache kee paurree rahasee alakh nivaasee |7|3|11|
Says Nanak, these are the steps of the ladder, of the Teachings of the True Guru; only the Unseen Lord shall remain. ||7||3||11||

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਬਿਲੋਕਿਯੋ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
taa ko roop bilokiyo jab hee jaae kai |
ਹਿਤੂ ਹੇਤੁ ਗਿਰਿ ਪਰੀ ਧਰਨਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
hitoo het gir paree dharan dukh paae kai |
When she reached there, looking at her condition she fell flat.
ਯਾਹਿ ਸਖੀ ਜਿਹਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੌ ਪਿਯਹਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਯੈ ॥
yaeh sakhee jihi bidh sau piyeh milaaeiyai |
(In her mind) ‘I must strive to make her meet her lover,
ਹੌ ਜੌਨ ਸੁਪਨਿਯੈ ਲਹਿਯੋ ਵਹੈ ਲੈ ਆਇਯੈ ॥੧੯॥
hau jauan supaniyai lahiyo vahai lai aaeiyai |19|
‘By bringing in the person she had seen in the dream.’(19)

ਚਿਤ੍ਰਕਲਾ ਧੌਲਹਰ ਉਸਾਰਿਸ ॥

ਚੌਦਹ ਭਵਨ ਤਹਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਡਾਰਿਸ ॥
chauadah bhavan tahaa likh ddaaris |
Then Chitar Kala built a castle and all round she drew (drawings of) the fourteen regions.
ਦੇਵ ਦੈਤ ਤਿਹ ਠੌਰ ਬਨਾਏ ॥
dev dait tih tthauar banaae |
ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ਜਛ ਭੁਜੰਗ ਸੁਹਾਏ ॥੨੦॥
gandhrab jachh bhujang suhaae |20|
She sketched the devils, the gods and Gandharabh Jachh.(20)

ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਕੇ ਏਸ ਜੇ ਤਹ ਸਭ ਲਿਖੇ ਬਨਾਇ ॥

She carved there all the rulers ofthe world including,
ਰੋਹਣੇਹ ਪ੍ਰਦੁਮਨ ਸੁਤ ਹਰਿ ਆਦਿਕ ਜਦੁਰਾਇ ॥੨੧॥
rohaneh praduman sut har aadik jaduraae |21|
Balbhadar, and Anuradh and Krishna, the sons ofParduman.(21)
ਚੌਦਹ ਪੁਰੀ ਬਨਾਇ ਕੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸਮਝਾਹਿ ॥
chauadah puree banaae kai taeh kahiyo samajhaeh |
After creating there, fourteen fairies, she suggested her,
ਤੁਮਰੋ ਜਿਯਬ ਉਪਾਇ ਮੈ ਕੀਯੋ ਬਿਲੋਕਹੁ ਆਇ ॥੨੨॥
tumaro jiyab upaae mai keeyo bilokahu aae |22|
‘I have devised the means for your survival, come and see yourself.’(22)

ਪੁਨਿ ਕੈਰਵ ਕੇ ਕੁਲਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ ॥
pun kairav ke kuleh dikhaayo |
ਤਿਨਹਿ ਬਿਲੌਕਿਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੨੩॥

ਚੌਦਹਿ ਪੁਰੀ ਬਿਲੋਕ ਕਰਿ ਤਹਾ ਪਹੂੰਚੀ ਆਇ ॥
chauadeh puree bilok kar tahaa pahoonchee aae |
After looking at fourteen fairies she (Ukha) reached there,
ਜਹ ਸਭ ਜਦੁ ਕੁਲ ਕੇ ਸਹਿਤ ਸੋਭਿਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਦੁਰਾਇ ॥੨੪॥
jeh sabh jad kul ke sahit sobhit sree jaduraae |24|
Where all the members of Jadav family, including Krishna, were sitting.(24)
ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਲਾਗਿਲੀ ਕੌ ਨਿਰਖਿ ਪੁਨਿ ਨਿਰਖੇ ਜਦੁਰਾਇ ॥
pratham laagilee kau nirakh pun nirakhe jaduraae |
First she saw Balbhadar and then Krishna.
ਹ੍ਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ︀ਯ ਪਾਇਨ ਪਰੀ ਜਗਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਠਹਰਾਇ ॥੨੫॥
hvai prasanay paaein paree jagat guroo tthaharaae |25|
She was appeased and, believing them to be the gurus of the world, bent and paid her obeisance.(25)

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਦੁਮਨ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ਜਾਈ ॥
bahur praduman nihaariyo jaaee |
ਲਜਤ ਨਾਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ਨਿਹੁਰਾਈ ॥
lajat naar naaree nihuraaee |
Then she saw Parduman and, modestly, bent her head in reverence.
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਪੂਤ ਬਿਲੋਕਿਯੋ ਜਬ ਹੀ ॥
taa ko poot bilokiyo jab hee |
ਮਿਟਿ ਗਯੋ ਸੋਕ ਦੇਹ ਕੋ ਸਭ ਹੀ ॥੨੬॥
mitt gayo sok deh ko sabh hee |26|
But when she saw his son, Anuradh, she felt all her affliction eradicated.(26)

ਧੰਨ︀ਯ ਧੰਨ︀ਯ ਮੁਖ ਕਹਿ ਉਠੀ ਸਖਿਯਹਿ ਸੀਸ ਝੁਕਾਇ ॥
dhanay dhanay mukh keh utthee sakhiyeh sees jhukaae |
With praises, she thanked her friend.
ਜੋ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਭੀਤਰ ਲਹਿਯੋ ਸੋਈ ਦਯੋ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥੨੭॥
jo supane bheetar lahiyo soee dayo dikhaae |27|
‘What I saw in dream, I perceived it vividly.(27)
ਚੌਦਹ ਪੁਰੀ ਬਨਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਿਯ ਕੋ ਦਰਸ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥
chauadah puree banaae kai piy ko daras dikhaae |
‘Taking me through fourteen regions, you have shown me every thing.
ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਖੈ ਜਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਲਿਖਿਯੋ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨੮॥
chitr bikhai jih bidh likhiyo so mai dehu milaae |28|
‘Now you must make me to meet him in reallife.’(28)

ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਰੇਖ ਜਬ ਯੌ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

ਪਵਨ ਰੂਪ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ਤਿਤ ਧਾਈ ॥
pavan roop hvai kai tith dhaaee |
Acquiescing to her requests, she manifested herself as air,
ਦ੍ਵਾਰਕਾਵਤੀ ਬਿਲੋਕਿਯੋ ਜਬ ਹੀ ॥
dvaarakaavatee bilokiyo jab hee |
ਚਿਤ ਕੌ ਸੋਕ ਦੂਰਿ ਭਯੋ ਸਭ ਹੀ ॥੨੯॥
chit kau sok door bhayo sabh hee |29|
And felt relieved reaching Dwarakpuree.(29)

ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਾ ਤਹ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਕਹੇ ਕੁਅਰ ਸੋ ਬੈਨ ॥
chitr kalaa teh jaae kai kahe kuar so bain |
Chitar Kala communicated to the prince, Anuradh, ‘The damsel from high up mountains, spell bound by your eyes, has come to see you.
ਗਿਰਿ ਬਾਸਿਨ ਬਿਰਹਨਿ ਭਈ ਨਿਰਖਿ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ਨੈਨ ॥੩੦॥
gir baasin birahan bhee nirakh tihaare nain |30|
‘Yearning to meet you, she has become desperate.’(30)

ਲਾਲ ਕਰੋ ਤਿਹ ਠੌਰ ਪਯਾਨੋ ॥
laal karo tih tthauar payaano |

jauan des mai tumai bakhaano |
(Ukha) ‘My love, you come with me to the region, wherever I tell you go,
ਚੜਿ ਬਿਵਾਨ ਮੈ ਤਹਾ ਸਿਧਰਿਯੈ ॥
charr bivaan mai tahaa sidhariyai |
ਧਾਮ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਕਰਿਯੈ ॥੩੧॥
dhaam pavitr hamaaro kariyai |31|
‘Come flying on a bibaan (flying chariot) and make my place pious.’(31)
