ਆਵਉ ਵੰਞਉ ਡੁੰਮਣੀ ਕਿਤੀ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੇਉ ॥
aavau vanyau ddunmanee kitee mitr kareo |
The double-minded person comes and goes, and has numerous friends.
ਸਾ ਧਨ ਢੋਈ ਨ ਲਹੈ ਵਾਢੀ ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰੇਉ ॥੧॥
saa dhan dtoee na lahai vaadtee kiau dheereo |1|
The soul-bride is separated from her Lord, and she has no place of rest; how can she be comforted? ||1||
ਮੈਡਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਆਪਨੜੇ ਪਿਰ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
maiddaa man rataa aapanarre pir naal |
My mind is attuned to the Love of my Husband Lord.
ਹਉ ਘੋਲਿ ਘੁਮਾਈ ਖੰਨੀਐ ਕੀਤੀ ਹਿਕ ਭੋਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hau ghol ghumaaee khaneeai keetee hik bhoree nadar nihaal |1| rahaau |
I am devoted, dedicated, a sacrifice to the Lord; if only He would bless me with His Glance of Grace, even for an instant! ||1||Pause||
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਸਾਹੁਰੜੈ ਕਿਉ ਜਾਉ ॥
peeearrai ddohaaganee saahurarrai kiau jaau |
I am a rejected bride, abandoned in my parents' home; how can I go to my in-laws now?
ਮੈ ਗਲਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਮੁਠੜੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਝੂਰਿ ਮਰਾਉ ॥੨॥
mai gal aaugan muttharree bin pir jhoor maraau |2|
I wear my faults around my neck; without my Husband Lord, I am grieving, and wasting away to death. ||2||
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਸੰਮਲਾ ਸਾਹੁਰੜੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
peeearrai pir samalaa saahurarrai ghar vaas |
But if, in my parents' home, I remember my Husband Lord, then I will come to dwell in the home of my in-laws yet.
ਸੁਖਿ ਸਵੰਧਿ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥੩॥
sukh savandh sohaaganee pir paaeaa gunataas |3|
The happy soul-brides sleep in peace; they find their Husband Lord, the treasure of virtue. ||3||
ਲੇਫੁ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ਪਟ ਕੀ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਅੰਗਿ ਬਣਾਇ ॥
lef nihaalee patt kee kaaparr ang banaae |
Their blankets and mattresses are made of silk, and so are the clothes on their bodies.
ਪਿਰੁ ਮੁਤੀ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਤਿਨ ਡੁਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੪॥
pir mutee ddohaaganee tin ddukhee rain vihaae |4|
The Lord rejects the impure soul-brides. Their life-night passes in misery. ||4||
ਕਿਤੀ ਚਖਉ ਸਾਡੜੇ ਕਿਤੀ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇਉ ॥
kitee chkhau saaddarre kitee ves kareo |
I have tasted many flavors, and worn many robes,
ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਗਇਅਮੁ ਵਾਢੀ ਝੂਰੇਦੀ ਝੂਰੇਉ ॥੫॥
pir bin joban baad geiam vaadtee jhooredee jhooreo |5|
but without my Husband Lord, my youth is slipping away uselessly; I am separated from Him, and I cry out in pain. ||5||
ਸਚੇ ਸੰਦਾ ਸਦੜਾ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
sache sandaa sadarraa suneeai gur veechaar |
I have heard the True Lord's message, contemplating the Guru.
ਸਚੇ ਸਚਾ ਬੈਹਣਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੬॥
sache sachaa baihanaa nadaree nadar piaar |6|
True is the home of the True Lord; by His Gracious Grace, I love Him. ||6||
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਸਚ ਕਾ ਡੇਖੈ ਡੇਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
giaanee anjan sach kaa ddekhai ddekhanahaar |
The spiritual teacher applies the ointment of Truth to his eyes, and sees God, the Seer.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
guramukh boojhai jaaneeai haumai garab nivaar |7|
The Gurmukh comes to know and understand; ego and pride are subdued. ||7||
ਤਉ ਭਾਵਨਿ ਤਉ ਜੇਹੀਆ ਮੂ ਜੇਹੀਆ ਕਿਤੀਆਹ ॥
tau bhaavan tau jeheea moo jeheea kiteeaah |
O Lord, You are pleased with those who are like Yourself; there are many more like me.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਛੁੜੈ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੈ ਰਤੜੀਆਹ ॥੮॥੧॥੯॥
naanak naahu na veechhurrai tin sachai ratarreeaah |8|1|9|
O Nanak, the Husband does not separate from those who are imbued with Truth. ||8||1||9||

Bana Soor was the Raja of the city of Bushehar,
ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਏਸ੍ਵਰ ਝੁਕੇ ਜਨੁਕ ਦੁਤਿਯ ਅਲਿਕੇਸ ॥੧॥
des des esvar jhuke januk dutiy alikes |1|
And the rulers of all the other countries, revered him as Almighty, and bowed to him.(1)

sundar bhavan teen hoon jaanee |
His principal Rani followed the theology of yoga; she was exceptionally beautiful.
ਜੋਬਨ ਜੇਬ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਿਸ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
joban jeb adhik tis sohai |
ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਜਛ ਭੁਜੰਗਨ ਮੋਹੈ ॥੨॥
sur nar jachh bhujangan mohai |2|
Her youthfulness was very much savoured by all; the gods, the devils, Jachh and Bhujangs. (2)

She gave birth to a girl named Ukha,
ਲਾਜ ਸੀਲ ਸੁਭ ਸਕੁਚ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਨਿਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਯ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੩॥
laaj seel subh sakuch brat nij kar kiy karataar |3|
Who was serene and was endowed with charm.(3)

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਸਰੂਪ ਬਿਰਾਜਈ ॥
taa ko roop anoop saroop biraajee |
She was bestowed with pleasant features.
ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਜਛ ਭੁਜੰਗਨ ਕੋ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਜਈ ॥
sur nar jachh bhujangan ko man laajee |
The devils, the gods, Jachh, and Bhujang, all felt modest before her.
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਕੋਰ ਕਟਾਛ ਬਿਲੋਕਨ ਪਾਇਯੈ ॥
taa ko kor kattaachh bilokan paaeiyai |
If some one saw her with his own eyes,
ਹੋ ਬਿਨ ਦੀਨੋ ਹੀ ਦਾਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਕਾਇਯੈ ॥੪॥
ho bin deeno hee daaman sadaa bikaaeiyai |4|
He would feel sold to her without any monetary gain (an unpaid slave).(4)
ਨੈਨ ਹਰਨ ਸੇ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਬਿਸਿਖ ਜਾਨੁਕ ਬਢਿਯਾਰੇ ॥
nain haran se sayaam bisikh jaanuk badtiyaare |
Her black eyes were epitome of the eyes of the deer,
ਸੁਭ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਤਨ ਭਰੇ ਚਾਰੁ ਸੋਭਿਤ ਕਜਰਾਰੇ ॥
subh suhaag tan bhare chaar sobhit kajaraare |
And they looked more attractive with eye-lasher in them.
ਕਮਲ ਹੇਰਿ ਛਬਿ ਲਜੈ ਦਿਪਤ ਦਾਮਨ ਕੁਰਰਾਵੈ ॥
kamal her chhab lajai dipat daaman kuraraavai |
ਹੋ ਬਨ ਬਨ ਭਰਮੈ ਬਿਹੰਗ ਆਜੁ ਲਗਿ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
ho ban ban bharamai bihang aaj lag ant na paavai |5|
The Lotus-flower and the shine of the lightning looked humble before her.
ਜਨੁਕ ਪਖਰਿਆ ਤੁਰੈ ਜਨੁਕ ਜਮਧਰ ਸੀ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
januk pakhariaa turai januk jamadhar see sohai |
ਖੜਗ ਬਾਢਿ ਜਨੁ ਧਰੇ ਪੁਹਪ ਨਰਗਿਸਿ ਤਟ ਕੋ ਹੈ ॥
kharrag baadt jan dhare puhap naragis tatt ko hai |
ਜਨੁਕ ਰੈਨਿ ਕੇ ਜਗੇ ਹੇਰਿ ਹਰ ਨਿਜ ਛਬਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
januk rain ke jage her har nij chhab haare |
ਹੋ ਬਾਲਿ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ਨੈਨ ਜਨੁਕ ਦੋਊ ਮਤਵਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
ho baal tihaare nain januk doaoo matavaare |6|
ਚੁੰਚਰੀਟ ਛਬਿ ਹੇਰਿ ਭਏ ਅਬ ਲਗੇ ਦਿਵਾਨੇ ॥
chunchareett chhab her bhe ab lage divaane |
The pied wagtails had become mad on seeing her.
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਅਬ ਲੌ ਬਨ ਬਸਤ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੌ ਨ ਸਿਧਾਨੇ ॥
mrig ab lau ban basat bahur grih kau na sidhaane |
The deer kept on roaming around in the jungle for her sight.
ਤਪੀਸਨ ਦੁਤਿ ਕੌ ਹੇਰਿ ਜਟਨ ਕੋ ਜੂਟ ਛਕਾਯੋ ॥
tapeesan dut kau her jattan ko joott chhakaayo |
The ascetics turned into celibates, for not getting her to yield.
ਹੋ ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਪੰਖੇਰੂ ਗਗਨ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੭॥
ho bhramat pankheroo gagan prabhaa ko paar na paayo |7|
The birds were always looking for her.(7)
ਤਾ ਕੌ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਬਿਧਾਤੈ ਜੋ ਰਚਿਯੋ ॥
taa kau roop anoop bidhaatai jo rachiyo |
ਰੂਪ ਚਤੁਰਦਸ ਲੋਗਨ ਕੌ ਯਾ ਮੈ ਗਚਿਯੋ ॥
roop chaturadas logan kau yaa mai gachiyo |
ਜੋ ਕੋਊ ਦੇਵ ਅਦੇਵ ਬਿਲੋਕੈ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
jo koaoo dev adev bilokai jaae kai |
ਹੋ ਗਿਰੈ ਮੂਰਛਨਾ ਖਾਇ ਧਰਨਿ ਪਰ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥੮॥
ho girai moorachhanaa khaae dharan par aae kai |8|

ਸਹਸ੍ਰਬਾਹੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਪਿਤਾ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਬੀਰਜ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
sahasrabaahu taa ko pitaa jaa ko beeraj apaar |
Sehas Bahu was her father,
ਬਾਹੁ ਸਹਸ ਆਯੁਧ ਧਰੇ ਜਨੁ ਦੂਜੋ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੯॥
baahu sehas aayudh dhare jan doojo karataar |9|
And thousands of arms and weapons were under his command.(9)
ਛਿਤ ਕੇ ਜਿਤੇ ਛਿਤੇਸ ਸਭ ਬਡੇ ਛਤ੍ਰਿਯਨ ਘਾਇ ॥
chhit ke jite chhites sabh badde chhatriyan ghaae |
Annihilating many heroes, he had subdued many kings.
ਬਿਪ੍ਰਨ ਕੌ ਦਛਿਨਾ ਦਈ ਭੂਰਿ ਗਾਇ ਸੈ ਦਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
bipran kau dachhinaa dee bhoor gaae sai daae |10|
He had been benevolent to Brahmin priests and gave out many cows in charity.(10)

ਜਾ ਕੌ ਖੰਡ ਡੰਡ ਨਿਤਿ ਭਰੈ ॥
jaa kau khandd ddandd nit bharai |
ਤੇ ਸਿਵ ਕੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਨਿਤਿ ਕਰੈ ॥
te siv kee poojaa nit karai |
The Rajas of all the regions paid him taxes. He was the devotee of Shiva.
ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਪਸੁਰਾਟ ਰਿਝਾਯੋ ॥
ek divas pasuraatt rijhaayo |
ਤੁਮਲ ਜੁਧ ਮਾਗ︀ਯੋ ਮੁਖ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੧੧॥
tumal judh maagayo mukh paayo |11|
He asked for a boon from Shiva, which could win him a big war.(11)

‘When flag falls down on ground in your house,
ਤੁਮਲ ਜੁਧ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਭਯੋ ਲੀਜੌ ਸਮਝਿ ਸੁਜਾਨਿ ॥੧੨॥
tumal judh tab hee bhayo leejau samajh sujaan |12|
‘Then you take it that a fearful war is going to break,’(12)

ਸੋਵਤ ਸੁਤਾ ਸੁਪਨ ਯੌਂ ਪਾਯੋ ॥

jaanuk main roop dhar aayo |
His sleeping daughter had such dream, which made her feel that the Cupid had come down,
ਤਾਹਿ ਛੋਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਸੁਤ ਬਰਿਯੋ ॥
taeh chhor taa ko sut bariyo |
ਨਗਰ ਦ੍ਵਾਰਿਕਾ ਚਿਤਵਨ ਕਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੩॥
nagar dvaarikaa chitavan kariyo |13|
And by Ignoring the Cupid she had attained his son, who had been living in Dwarka.(13)

ਚਮਕ ਪਰੀ ਅਬਲਾ ਤਬੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਯਾ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ॥

Dreaming about her infatuation with her lover, she abruptly got up.
ਪੁਲਿਕ ਪਸੀਜਤ ਤਨ ਭਯੋ ਬਿਰਹ ਬਿਕਲ ਭਯੋ ਅੰਗ ॥੧੪॥
pulik paseejat tan bhayo birah bikal bhayo ang |14|
With dream of love she sweated and all the parts of her body ached.(14)

ਪਿਯ ਪਿਯ ਉਠ ਅਬਲਾਹਿ ਉਚਰੀ ॥
piy piy utth abalaeh ucharee |
ਛਿਤ ਗਿਰਿ ਗਈ ਦਾਤਨੀ ਪਰੀ ॥
chhit gir gee daatanee paree |
Shouting, ‘My love, my love,’ she fell down and became unconscious.
ਤਬ ਸਖਿਯਨ ਤਿਹ ਲਯੋ ਉਚਾਈ ॥
tab sakhiyan tih layo uchaaee |
ਰੇਖਾ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੧੫॥
rekhaa chitr kathaa sun paaee |15|
Then her friends lifted her and Rekha Chi tar listened to all her story (dream).(15)

ਘੂਮਤ ਨੈਨ ਖੁਮਾਰੀ ਸੀ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਗੂੜ ਅਗੂੜਨ ਭੇਦ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥
ghoomat nain khumaaree see maanahu goorr agoorran bhed bataavai |
(Rekha Chitar to one of Ukha’s friend) ‘She is brimming with love and the secret in her, which she cannot describe.
ਤਾਪ ਚੜੀ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਤਨ ਕੌ ਸਖੀ ਹਾਰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਿਯੋ ਨ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥
taap charree tih ko tan kau sakhee haar singaar kiyo na suhaavai |
‘She has got love-fever and detests the adornments.
ਬੇਗਿ ਚਲੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਬੈਨ ਬਲਾਇ ਲਿਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਸਾ ਕਹਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
beg chalo sun bain balaae liau teree dasaa keh muhi na aavai |
‘She told me to go away as she could not describe her condition.
ਪੀਯ ਕੀ ਪੀਰ ਕਿ ਪੀਰ ਕਛੂ ਨਿਰਖੋ ਪਲ ਮੈ ਕਿ ਮਰਿਯੋ ਬਚਿ ਆਵੈ ॥੧੬॥
peey kee peer ki peer kachhoo nirakho pal mai ki mariyo bach aavai |16|
‘Either she is suffering due to lover’s separation, or some thing else. ‘I cannot say whether she will live or die.(16)
ਬੋਲਤ ਹੋ ਮਤਵਾਰੇ ਜ︀ਯੋ ਮਾਨਨਿ ਡਾਰਤ ਆਂਖਨਿ ਤੇ ਜਲ ਜੈਹੈ ॥
bolat ho matavaare jayo maanan ddaarat aankhan te jal jaihai |
‘She speaks like captivated person.
ਘੋਰਿ ਹਲਾਹਲ ਆਜੁ ਪਿਯੈ ਨਹਿ ਕਾਸੀ ਬਿਖੈ ਕਰਵਤ੍ਰਹਿ ਲੈਹੈ ॥
ghor halaahal aaj piyai neh kaasee bikhai karavatreh laihai |
‘It appears she has taken poison or is under a saw in Kanshi over her head.
ਜਾਨਤ ਹੋ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਖੀ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਪਟ ਫਾਰਿ ਅਤੀਤਨਿ ਹ੍ਵੈਹੈ ॥
jaanat ho grih chhaadd sakhee sabh hee patt faar ateetan hvaihai |
‘I think she will leave her home and become a nun.
ਲੇਹੁ ਬਿਲੋਕਿ ਪਿਯਾਰੀ ਕੋ ਆਨਨ ਊਖ ਕਲਾ ਮਰਿਗੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪੈਹੈ ॥੧੭॥
lehu bilok piyaaree ko aanan aookh kalaa marige dukh paihai |17|
‘Come and have a vision of your beloved otherwise Ukha Kala will die and you will be afflicted too.’(17)

ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਰੇਖਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਏ ਬਚਨ ਹਿਤੂ ਹੇਤ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥
chitr rekhaa sun e bachan hitoo het dukh paae |
Chitar Rekha, after listening, became very concerned.
ਪਵਨ ਡਾਰਿ ਪਾਛੇ ਚਲੀ ਤਹਾ ਪਹੂੰਚੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੮॥
pavan ddaar paachhe chalee tahaa pahoonchee jaae |18|
She flew like the wind and reached there.(18)
