Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਕਰੇ ॥
maat pitaa sanjog upaae rakat bind mil pindd kare |
Through the union of mother and father, the fetus is formed. The egg and sperm join together to make the body.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਰਭ ਉਰਧਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥
antar garabh uradh liv laagee so prabh saare daat kare |1|
Upside-down within the womb, it lovingly dwells on the Lord; God provides for it, and gives it nourishment there. ||1||
ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੈ ॥
sansaar bhavajal kiau tarai |
How can he cross over the terrifying world-ocean?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਫਰਿਓ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰੁ ਟਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramukh naam niranjan paaeeai afario bhaar afaar ttarai |1| rahaau |
The Gurmukh obtains the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord; the unbearable load of sins is removed. ||1||Pause||
ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਏ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਮੈ ਬਉਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਉ ਹਰੇ ॥
te gun visar ge aparaadhee mai bauraa kiaa krau hare |
I have forgotten Your Virtues, Lord; I am insane - what can I do now?
ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਸਭੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਸਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੨॥
too daataa deaal sabhai sir ahinis daat samaar kare |2|
You are the Merciful Giver, above the heads of all. Day and night, You give gifts, and take care of all. ||2||
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਧਰੇ ॥
chaar padaarath lai jag janamiaa siv sakatee ghar vaas dhare |
One is born to achieve the four great objectives of life. The spirit has taken up its home in the material world.
ਲਾਗੀ ਭੂਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਖਰੇ ॥੩॥
laagee bhookh maaeaa mag johai mukat padaarath mohi khare |3|
Driven by hunger, it sees the path of Maya's riches; this emotional attachment takes away the treasure of liberation. ||3||
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ਇਤ ਉਤ ਢੂਢਤ ਥਾਕਿ ਪਰੇ ॥
karan palaav kare nahee paavai it ut dtoodtat thaak pare |
Weeping and wailing, he does not receive them; he searches here and there, and grows weary.
ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਕੂੜ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੪॥
kaam krodh ahankaar viaape koorr kuttanb siau preet kare |4|
Engrossed in sexual desire, anger and egotism, he falls in love with his false relatives. ||4||
ਖਾਵੈ ਭੋਗੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਕਾਲ ਘਰੇ ॥
khaavai bhogai sun sun dekhai pahir dikhaavai kaal ghare |
He eats and enjoys, listens and watches, and dresses up to show off in this house of death.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਕਾਲੁ ਟਰੇ ॥੫॥
bin gurasabad na aap pachhaanai bin har naam na kaal ttare |5|
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he does not undersand himself. Without the Lord's Name, death cannot be avoided. ||5||
ਜੇਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤੇ ਛੀਨਿ ਖਰੇ ॥
jetaa mohu haumai kar bhoole meree meree karate chheen khare |
The more attachment and egotism delude and confuse him, the more he cries out, "Mine, mine!", and the more he loses out.
ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਸਹਸੈ ਸਹਸਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਧੂਰਿ ਪਰੇ ॥੬॥
tan dhan binasai sahasai sahasaa fir pachhutaavai mukh dhoor pare |6|
His body and wealth pass away, and he is torn by skepticism and cynicism; in the end, he regrets and repents, when the dust falls on his face. ||6||
ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਖਿਸਿਆ ਕਫੁ ਕੰਠੁ ਬਿਰੂਧੋ ਨੈਨਹੁ ਨੀਰੁ ਢਰੇ ॥
biradh bheaa joban tan khisiaa kaf kantth biroodho nainahu neer dtare |
He grows old, his body and youth waste away, and his throat is plugged with mucous; water flows from his eyes.
ਚਰਣ ਰਹੇ ਕਰ ਕੰਪਣ ਲਾਗੇ ਸਾਕਤ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰੇ ॥੭॥
charan rahe kar kanpan laage saakat raam na ridai hare |7|
He feet fail him, and his hands shake and tremble; the faithless cynic does not enshrine the Lord in his heart. ||7||
ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗਈ ਕਾਲੀ ਹੂ ਧਉਲੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ਰਖਿਓ ਘਰੇ ॥
surat gee kaalee hoo dhaule kisai na bhaavai rakhio ghare |
His intellect fails him, his black hair turns white, and no one wants to keep him in their home.
ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਾਮ ਐਸੇ ਦੋਖ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਰੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਖਰੇ ॥੮॥
bisarat naam aise dokh laageh jam maar samaare narak khare |8|
Forgetting the Naam, these are the stigmas which stick to him; the Messenger of Death beats him, and drags him to hell. ||8||
ਪੂਰਬ ਜਨਮ ਕੋ ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਦੋਸੁ ਧਰੇ ॥
poorab janam ko lekh na mittee janam marai kaa kau dos dhare |
The record of one's past actions cannot be erased; who else is to blame for one's birth and death?
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਾਦਿ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਰੇ ॥੯॥
bin gur baad jeevan hor maranaa bin gurasabadai janam jare |9|
Without the Guru, life and death are pointless; without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, life just burns away. ||9||
ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰ ਭਏ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਫੋਕਟ ਕਰਮ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ ॥
khusee khuaar bhe ras bhogan fokatt karam vikaar kare |
The pleasures enjoyed in happiness bring ruin; acting in corruption is useless indulgence.
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਖੋਇਓ ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਪਰੇ ॥੧੦॥
naam bisaar lobh mool khoeo sir dharam raae kaa ddandd pare |10|
Forgetting the Naam, and caught by greed, he betrays his own source; the club of the Righteous Judge of Dharma will strike him over the head. ||10||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥
guramukh raam naam gun gaaveh jaa kau har prabh nadar kare |
The Gurmukhs sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name; the Lord God blesses them with His Glance of Grace.
ਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਹਰੇ ॥੧੧॥
te niramal purakh aparanpar poore te jag meh gur govind hare |11|
Those beings are pure, perfect unlimited and infinite; in this world, they are the embodiment of the Guru, the Lord of the Universe. ||11||
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨ ਸਮਾਰਹੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਭਾਉ ਕਰੇ ॥
har simarahu gur bachan samaarahu sangat har jan bhaau kare |
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord; meditate and contemplate the Guru's Word, and love to associate with the humble servants of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੧੨॥੮॥
har jan gur paradhaan duaarai naanak tin jan kee ren hare |12|8|
The Lord's humble servants are the embodiment of the Guru; they are supreme and respected in the Court of the Lord. Nanak seeks the dust of the feet of those humble servants of the Lord. ||12||8||

ਤਾ ਸੋ ਰਸਨ ਬਨ੍ਰਹਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਾਰਹਿ ਦਯੋ ਲੰਘਾਇ ॥
taa so rasan banrahaae kai jaareh dayo langhaae |
By tying him with the rope she helped the friend to escape,
ਮੂੜ ਰਾਵ ਚਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਸਕਿਯੋ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥
moorr raav chakrit rahiyo sakiyo charitr na paae |5|
And the stupid Raja did not perceive the truth.(5)(1)

ਭਸਮਾਗਦ ਦਾਨੋ ਬਡੋ ਭੀਮ ਪੁਰੀ ਕੇ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
bhasamaagad daano baddo bheem puree ke maeh |
In the city ofBhim Puree, a devil named Bhasmangad used to live,
ਤਾਹਿ ਬਰਾਬਰਿ ਭਾਸਕਰਿ ਜੁਧ ਸਮੈ ਮੋ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
taeh baraabar bhaasakar judh samai mo naeh |1|
In fighting, there was none comparable to him.(1)

ਤਿਨ ਬਹੁ ਬੈਠਿ ਤਪਸ︀ਯਾ ਕਿਯੋ ॥
tin bahu baitth tapasayaa kiyo |
ਯੌ ਬਰਦਾਨ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਲਿਯੋ ॥
yau baradaan rudr te liyo |
He meditated for a long time and attained a boon from Shiva.
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਹਾਥ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥
jaa ke sir par haath lagaavai |
ਜਰਿ ਬਰਿ ਭਸਮ ਸੁ ਨਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
jar bar bhasam su nar ho jaavai |2|
Any body, on whose head he placed his hand, he would be reduced to ashes.(2)
ਤਿਨ ਗੌਰੀ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
tin gauaree ko roop nihaariyo |
ਯਹੈ ਆਪਨੇ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
yahai aapane hridai bichaariyo |
When he saw Paarbati (wife of Shiva), he thought to himself,
ਸਿਵ ਕੇ ਸੀਸ ਹਾਥ ਮੈ ਧਰਿਹੋ ॥
siv ke sees haath mai dhariho |
ਛਿਨ ਮੈ ਯਾਹਿ ਭਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਡਰਿਹੋ ॥੩॥
chhin mai yaeh bhasam kar ddariho |3|
‘I will put my hand on the head of Shiva and perish him in the twinkling of eye.’(3)
ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਇਹੈ ਚਿੰਤ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
chit mai ihai chint kar dhaayo |
ਮਹਾ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਬਧ ਹਿਤ ਆਯੋ ॥
mahaa rudr ke badh hit aayo |
With this in mind he came to kill Shiva.
ਮਹਾ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਜਬ ਨੈਨ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
mahaa rudr jab nain nihaariyo |
ਨਿਜੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਲੈ ਸੰਗ ਸਿਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੪॥
nij triy ko lai sang sidhaariyo |4|
When Shiva saw him, he, along with his wife, ran away.(4)
ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਭਜਤ ਦਾਨੋ ਹੂੰ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
rudr bhajat daano hoon dhaayo |
ਦਛਿਨ ਪੂਰਬ ਸਿਵਹਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਯੋ ॥
dachhin poorab siveh bhramaayo |
Seeing Shiva running away, the devils gave him a chase.
ਪੁਨਿ ਪਛਿਮ ਕੋ ਹਰ ਜੂ ਧਯੋ ॥
pun pachhim ko har joo dhayo |
ਪਾਛੇ ਲਗਿਯੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੋ ਗਯੋ ॥੫॥
paachhe lagiyo taeh so gayo |5|
Shiva headed towards east and the devil followed too.(5)

ਤੀਨਿ ਦਿਸਨ ਮੈ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਠੌਰ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ਕੋਇ ॥
teen disan mai bhram rahiyo tthauar na paayo koe |
He kept roaming in three directions, but found no place to rest.
ਉਤਰ ਦਿਸਿ ਕੋ ਪੁਨਿ ਭਜਿਯੋ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਕਰੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
autar dis ko pun bhajiyo har joo karai su hoe |6|
Then, relying on the will of God, he ran towards North.(6)

ਜਬ ਉਤਰ ਕੋ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਸਿਧਾਯੋ ॥
jab utar ko rudr sidhaayo |
ਭਸਮਾਗਦ ਪਾਛੇ ਤਿਹ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
bhasamaagad paachhe tih dhaayo |
When Shiva headed for North, Bhasmangad followed too, thinking,
ਯਾ ਕੋ ਭਸਮ ਅਬੈ ਕਰਿ ਦੈਹੋ ॥
yaa ko bhasam abai kar daiho |
ਛੀਨਿ ਪਾਰਬਤੀ ਕੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੈਹੋ ॥੭॥
chheen paarabatee ko triy kaiho |7|
‘I will reduce him to ashes and take Paarbati away.’(7)

‘You fool, what boon have you been endowed with?
ਸਭ ਝੂਠਾ ਸੋ ਜਾਨਿਯੈ ਲੀਨ ਅਬੈ ਪਤਿਯਾਇ ॥੮॥
sabh jhootthaa so jaaniyai leen abai patiyaae |8|
‘It is all a lie, you can test it.(8)

lahiho ek kes jab jaro |
‘Initially try to put your hand on your head, if a couple of hair are burnt,
ਤਬ ਸਿਰ ਕਰ ਸਿਵ ਜੂ ਕੇ ਧਰਿਯੋ ॥
tab sir kar siv joo ke dhariyo |
ਮੋ ਕੋ ਨਿਜੁ ਨਾਰੀ ਲੈ ਕਰਿਯੋ ॥੯॥
mo ko nij naaree lai kariyo |9|
‘Then you put your hand on the head of Shiva and win me over.’(9)
ਯੌ ਬਚ ਦੈਤ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਜਬ ਕਰਿਯੋ ॥
yau bach dait sravan jab kariyo |
ਹਾਥ ਅਪਨੇ ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਧਰਿਯੋ ॥
haath apane sir par dhariyo |
When the devil heard this through his ears, he put his hand on his head.
ਛਿਨਕ ਬਿਖੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਜਰਿ ਗਯੋ ॥
chhinak bikhai moorakh jar gayo |
ਸਿਵ ਕੋ ਸੋਕ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰ ਦਯੋ ॥੧੦॥
siv ko sok door kar dayo |10|
In a flicker, the idiot was burnt and the Shiva’s distress was eliminated.(l0)

ਅਸ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਰਬਤੀ ਦੀਨੋ ਅਸੁਰ ਜਰਾਇ ॥
as charitr kar paarabatee deeno asur jaraae |
Through such an Chritar, Paarbati annihilated the devil,
ਫਟਕਾਚਲ ਸਿਵ ਕੇ ਸਹਿਤ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਿਰਾਜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੧॥
fattakaachal siv ke sahit bahur biraajee jaae |11|
And taking Shiva with her, she went back and ensconced in the (legendary) mountains of Kailasha.(11)(1)
