ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਲੀਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਨੀਆ ॥
mohanee mohi lee trai guneea |
Maya, the enticer, has enticed the world of the three gunas, the three qualities.
ਲੋਭਿ ਵਿਆਪੀ ਝੂਠੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ॥
lobh viaapee jhootthee duneea |
The false world is engrossed in greed.
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਸੰਚੀ ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਸਗਲ ਲੇ ਛਲੀਆ ॥੧॥
meree meree kar kai sanchee ant kee baar sagal le chhaleea |1|
Crying out, "Mine, mine!" they collect possessions, but in the end, they are all deceived. ||1||
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਦਇਅਲੀਆ ॥
nirbhau nirankaar deialeea |
The Lord is fearless, formless and merciful.
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਗਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਲੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

He is the Cherisher of all beings and creatures. ||1||Pause||
ਏਕੈ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਾਡੀ ਗਡਹੈ ॥
ekai sram kar gaaddee gaddahai |
Some collect wealth, and bury it in the ground.
ਏਕਹਿ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਦਾਮੁ ਨ ਛਡਹੈ ॥
ekeh supanai daam na chhaddahai |
Some cannot abandon wealth, even in their dreams.
ਰਾਜੁ ਕਮਾਇ ਕਰੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਥੈਲੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚੰਚਲਿ ਚਲੀਆ ॥੨॥
raaj kamaae karee jin thailee taa kai sang na chanchal chaleea |2|
The king exercises his power, and fills his money-bags, but this fickle companion will not go along with him. ||2||
ਏਕਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਪਿੰਡ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
ekeh praan pindd te piaaree |
Some love this wealth even more than their body and breath of life.
ਏਕ ਸੰਚੀ ਤਜਿ ਬਾਪ ਮਹਤਾਰੀ ॥
ek sanchee taj baap mahataaree |
Some collect it, forsaking their fathers and mothers.
ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਤੇ ਗੁਹਜੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਖਲੀਆ ॥੩॥
sut meet bhraat te guhajee taa kai nikatt na hoee khaleea |3|
Some hide it from their children, friends and siblings, but it will not remain with them. ||3||
ਹੋਇ ਅਉਧੂਤ ਬੈਠੇ ਲਾਇ ਤਾਰੀ ॥
hoe aaudhoot baitthe laae taaree |
Some become hermits, and sit in meditative trances.
ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
jogee jatee panddit beechaaree |
Some are Yogis, celibates, religious scholars and thinkers.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਮੜੀ ਮਸਾਣੀ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਬਸਤੇ ਊਠਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਕੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਪਲੀਆ ॥੪॥
grihi marree masaanee ban meh basate aootth tinaa kai laagee paleea |4|
Some dwell in homes, graveyards, cremation grounds and forests; but Maya still clings to them there. ||4||
ਕਾਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਜਾ ਕੇ ॥
kaatte bandhan tthaakur jaa ke |
When the Lord and Master releases one from his bonds,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਸਿਓ ਜੀਅ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥
har har naam basio jeea taa kai |
the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, comes to dwell in his soul.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਭਏ ਜਨ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਲੀਆ ॥੫॥੨॥੧੮॥
saadhasang bhe jan mukate gat paaee naanak nadar nihaleea |5|2|18|
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, His humble servants are liberated; O Nanak, they are redeemed and enraptured by the Lord's Glance of Grace. ||5||2||18||

Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸੋਊ ॥
simarahu ek niranjan soaoo |
Meditate in remembrance on the One Immaculate Lord.
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥
jaa te birathaa jaat na koaoo |
No one is turned away from Him empty-handed.
ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਿਆ ॥
maat garabh meh jin pratipaariaa |
He cherished and preserved you in your mother's womb;
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਦੇ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
jeeo pindd de saaj savaariaa |
He blessed you with body and soul, and embellished you.
ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਜਪੀਐ ॥
soee bidhaataa khin khin japeeai |
Each and every instant, meditate on that Creator Lord.
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਸਭਿ ਢਕੀਐ ॥
jis simarat avagun sabh dtakeeai |
Meditating in remembrance on Him, all faults and mistakes are covered.
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਉਰ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਧਾਰਹੁ ॥
charan kamal ur antar dhaarahu |
Enshrine the Lord's lotus feet deep within the nucleus of your self.
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਨ ਤੇ ਜੀਉ ਉਧਾਰਹੁ ॥
bikhiaa ban te jeeo udhaarahu |
Save your soul from the waters of corruption.
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਹ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਬਿਲਲਾਟਾ ॥
karan palaah mitteh bilalaattaa |
Your cries and shrieks shall be ended;
ਜਪਿ ਗੋਵਿਦ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਫਾਟਾ ॥
jap govid bharam bhau faattaa |
meditating on the Lord of the Universe, your doubts and fears shall be dispelled.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ॥
saadhasang viralaa ko paae |
Rare is that being, who finds the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
naanak taa kai bal bal jaae |1|
Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to Him. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਆਧਾਰਾ ॥
raam naam man tan aadhaaraa |
The Lord's Name is the support of my mind and body.
ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo simarai tis kaa nisataaraa |1| rahaau |
Whoever meditates on Him is emancipated. ||1||Pause||
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੀ ॥
mithiaa vasat sat kar maanee |
He believes that the false thing is true.
ਹਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਓ ਸਠ ਮੂੜ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ॥
hit laaeo satth moorr agiaanee |
The ignorant fool falls in love with it.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮਦ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
kaam krodh lobh mad maataa |
He is intoxicated with the wine of sexual desire, anger and greed;
ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਤਾ ॥
kauddee badalai janam gavaataa |
he loses this human life in exchance for a mere shell.
ਅਪਨਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਾਇਐ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
apanaa chhodd paraaeiai raataa |
He abandons his own, and loves that of others.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
maaeaa mad man tan sang jaataa |
His mind and body are permeated with the intoxication of Maya.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਕਰਤ ਕਲੋਲਾ ॥
trisan na boojhai karat kalolaa |
His thirsty desires are not quenched, although he indulges in pleasures.
ਊਣੀ ਆਸ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਭਿ ਬੋਲਾ ॥
aoonee aas mithiaa sabh bolaa |
His hopes are not fulfilled, and all his words are false.
ਆਵਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ਜਾਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
aavat ikelaa jaat ikelaa |
He comes alone, and he goes alone.
ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਸਭਿ ਬੋਲਾ ॥
ham tum sang jhootthe sabh bolaa |
False is all his talk of me and you.
ਪਾਇ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਓ ॥
paae tthgauree aap bhulaaeo |
The Lord Himself administers the poisonous potion, to mislead and delude.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਮਿਟਾਇਓ ॥੨॥
naanak kirat na jaae mittaaeo |2|
O Nanak, the the karma of past actions cannot be erased. ||2||
ਪਸੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਭੂਤ ਅਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਤਾ ॥
pas pankhee bhoot ar pretaa |
Beasts, birds, demons and ghosts
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਫਿਰਤ ਅਨੇਤਾ ॥
bahu bidh jonee firat anetaa |
- in these many ways, the false wander in reincarnation.
ਜਹ ਜਾਨੋ ਤਹ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jeh jaano teh rehan na paavai |
Wherever they go, they cannot remain there.
ਥਾਨ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਉਠਿ ਉਠਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
thaan bihoon utth utth fir dhaavai |
They have no place of rest; they rise up again and again and run around.
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
man tan baasanaa bahut bisathaaraa |
Their minds and bodies are filled with immense, expansive desires.
ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ਮੂਠੋ ਬੇਚਾਰਾ ॥
ahamev moottho bechaaraa |
The poor wretches are cheated by egotism.
ਅਨਿਕ ਦੋਖ ਅਰੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਜਾਈ ॥
anik dokh ar bahut sajaaee |
They are filled with countless sins, and are severely punished.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
taa kee keemat kehan na jaaee |
The extent of this cannot be estimated.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਰਕ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
prabh bisarat narak meh paaeaa |
Forgetting God, they fall into hell.
ਤਹ ਮਾਤ ਨ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਮੀਤ ਨ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
teh maat na bandh na meet na jaaeaa |
There are no mothers there, no siblings, no friends and no spouses.
ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਹੋਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
jis kau hot kripaal suaamee |
Those humble beings, unto whom the Lord and Master becomes Merciful,
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਰਗਰਾਮੀ ॥੩॥
so jan naanak paaragaraamee |3|
O Nanak, cross over. ||3||
ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਨੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
bhramat bhramat prabh saranee aaeaa |
Rambling and roaming, wandering around, I came to seek the Sanctuary of God.
ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
deenaa naath jagat pit maaeaa |
He is the Master of the meek, the father and mother of the world.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਇਆਲ ਦੁਖ ਦਰਦ ਬਿਦਾਰਣ ॥
prabh deaal dukh darad bidaaran |
The Merciful Lord God is the Destroyer of sorrow and suffering.
ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਣ ॥
jis bhaavai tis hee nisataaran |
He emancipates whoever He pleases.
ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਤੇ ਕਾਢਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
andh koop te kaadtanahaaraa |
He lifts them up and pulls him out of the deep dark pit.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥
prem bhagat hovat nisataaraa |
Emancipation comes through loving devotional worship.
ਸਾਧ ਰੂਪ ਅਪਨਾ ਤਨੁ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥
saadh roop apanaa tan dhaariaa |
The Holy Saint is the very embodiment of the Lord's form.
ਮਹਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਤੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਬਾਰਿਆ ॥
mahaa agan te aap ubaariaa |
He Himself saves us from the great fire.
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਇਸ ਤੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
jap tap sanjam is te kichh naahee |
By myself, I cannot practice meditation, austerities, penance and self-discipline.
ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਹੀ ॥
aad ant prabh agam agaahee |
In the beginning and in the end, God is inaccessible and unfathomable.
ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਮਾਗੈ ਦਾਸੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
naam dehi maagai daas teraa |
Please bless me with Your Name, Lord; Your slave begs only for this.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੯॥
har jeevan pad naanak prabh meraa |4|3|19|
O Nanak, my Lord God is the Giver of the true state of life. ||4||3||19||

gudaa bhog bhe te nripat man meh rahiyo lajaae |
With annul sex; Raja had felt himself much humiliated,
ਤਾ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਕਾਹੂੰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਲਯੋ ਨ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥੨੦॥
taa din te kaahoon triyeh layo na nikatt bulaae |20|
And from then on abandoned ruining the virtuosity of other’swomen.(20)(1)

Shah Farangh had a daughter, who was extremely pretty.
ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਨ ਭੀਤਰ ਕਹੂੰ ਤਾ ਸਮ ਔਰ ਨ ਨਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
teen bhavan bheetar kahoon taa sam aauar na naar |1|
In all the three domains, none was comparable to her.(1)

sahir jahaanaabaad ujiyaaro |
There was one Maulana (Muslim) priest named Abdul, who lived inthe city of Jehanbad.
ਹਾਜਰਾਤਿ ਜਬ ਬੈਠਿ ਮੰਗਾਵੈ ॥
haajaraat jab baitth mangaavai |
ਦੇਵ ਭੂਤ ਜਿਨਾਨ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
dev bhoot jinaan bulaavai |2|
When in meditation, he would call devils, demons and ghosts.(2)

ਦੇਵ ਭੂਤ ਜਿਨਾਤ ਕਹ ਲੇਵੈ ਨਿਕਟ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
dev bhoot jinaat keh levai nikatt bulaae |
He would tell the devils, demons and ghosts to come closer to him’
ਜੌਨ ਬਾਤ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਰੁਚੈ ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਲੇਤ ਮੰਗਾਇ ॥੩॥
jauan baat chit mai ruchai tin te let mangaae |3|
And whatever he planned, he would get them to execute.(3)

ਤਾ ਪੈ ਪਰੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਚਲਿ ਆਵੈ ॥

ਕੋਊ ਨਾਚਿ ਉਠ ਕੋਊ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
koaoo naach utth koaoo gaavai |
A number off airy used to come to him; some sang and some dancedfor him.
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੇ ਭਾਵ ਦਿਖਾਵਹਿ ॥
bhaat bhaat ke bhaav dikhaaveh |
ਦੇਖਨਹਾਰ ਸਭੇ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥੪॥
dekhanahaar sabhe bal jaaveh |4|
They displayed coquetry, which was admired by the spectators.(4)
ਲਾਲ ਪਰੀ ਇਕ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥
laal paree ik bachan uchaaro |
ਸਾਹ ਪਰੀ ਸੁਨੁ ਬੈਨ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥
saah paree sun bain hamaaro |
Once the Red-fairy expounded and Black-fairy responded.
ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਕਲਾ ਕੁਅਰਿ ਇਕ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
sundar kalaa kuar ik bhaaree |
ਜਨੁਕ ਰੂਪ ਕੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
januk roop kee raas savaaree |5|
‘Kala Kunwar is a pretty damsel, as if she is the mine of magnificence.(5)

ਤਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਬਿਧਿ ਰੂਪ ਲੈ ਕੀਨੇ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੇਕ ॥

‘Borrowing charm from her, Brahma has created many lovelies.
ਰੀਝਿ ਰਹੀ ਮੈ ਨਿਰਖਿ ਛਬਿ ਮਨ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਸਹਿਤ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥੬॥
reejh rahee mai nirakh chhab man kram sahit bibek |6|
‘Looking at her, through both, the body and the soul, I am gettingsatiated.( 6)

jaanuk fool maalitee rahee |
‘She is above adoration and appears to be the favourite of flower girls.
ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਕਬਿ ਤਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਉਚਾਰੈ ॥
kavan su kab tih prabhaa uchaarai |
ਕੋਟਿ ਸੂਰ ਜਨੁ ਚੜੇ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
kott soor jan charre savaare |7|
‘Who can relate her qualities as she epitomises thousands of Suns?’(7)
ਮੁਲਾ ਬਾਤ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਯਹ ਸੁਨੀ ॥
mulaa baat sravan yeh sunee |
ਬਿਰਹ ਬਿਕਲ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਮੂੰਡੀ ਧੁਨੀ ॥
birah bikal hvai moonddee dhunee |
When Maulana heard such verbalisation, he became hysterical.
ਏਕ ਦੇਵ ਭੇਜਾ ਤਹ ਜਾਈ ॥
ek dev bhejaa teh jaaee |
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਖਾਟ ਉਠਾਇ ਮੰਗਾਈ ॥੮॥
taa kee khaatt utthaae mangaaee |8|
He sent one demon to her and got her bed transported.(8)
ਵਾ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬਸਾਯੋ ॥
vaa sundar ko kachh na basaayo |
ਮੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਭੋਗ ਕਮਾਯੋ ॥
mulaa ke sang bhog kamaayo |
She was defenceless and she had to make love with Maulana.
ਬੀਤੀ ਰੈਨਿ ਭੋਰ ਜਬ ਭਯੋ ॥
beetee rain bhor jab bhayo |
ਤਿਹ ਪਹੁਚਾਇ ਤਹੀ ਤਿਨ ਦਯੋ ॥੯॥
