Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੁਈ ਨ ਮਨੁ ਮੁਆ ਸਰੁ ਲਹਰੀ ਮੈ ਮਤੁ ॥
maaeaa muee na man muaa sar laharee mai mat |
Maya is not conquered, and the mind is not subdued; the waves of desire in the world-ocean are intoxicating wine.
ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਜਲ ਸਿਰਿ ਤਰਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਤੁ ॥
bohith jal sir tar ttikai saachaa vakhar jit |
The boat crosses over the water, carrying the true merchandise.
ਮਾਣਕੁ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਸੀ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕਤੁ ॥
maanak man meh man maarasee sach na laagai kat |
The jewel within the mind subdues the mind; attached to the Truth, it is not broken.
ਰਾਜਾ ਤਖਤਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਗੁਣੀ ਭੈ ਪੰਚਾਇਣ ਰਤੁ ॥੧॥
raajaa takhat ttikai gunee bhai panchaaein rat |1|
The king is seated upon the throne, imbued with the Fear of God and the five qualities. ||1||
ਬਾਬਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੁ ॥
baabaa saachaa saahib door na dekh |
O Baba, do not see your True Lord and Master as being far away.
ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਲੇਖੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sarab jot jagajeevanaa sir sir saachaa lekh |1| rahaau |
He is the Light of all, the Life of the world; The True Lord writes His Inscription on each and every head. ||1||Pause||
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਰਿਖੀ ਮੁਨੀ ਸੰਕਰੁ ਇੰਦੁ ਤਪੈ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ॥
brahamaa bisan rikhee munee sankar ind tapai bhekhaaree |
Brahma and Vishnu, the Rishis and the silent sages, Shiva and Indra, penitents and beggars
ਮਾਨੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋਹੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਆਕੀ ਮਰਹਿ ਅਫਾਰੀ ॥
maanai hukam sohai dar saachai aakee mareh afaaree |
- whoever obeys the Hukam of the Lord's Command, looks beautiful in the Court of the True Lord, while the stubborn rebels die.
ਜੰਗਮ ਜੋਧ ਜਤੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
jangam jodh jatee saniaasee gur poorai veechaaree |
The wandering beggars, warriors, celibates and Sannyaasee hermits - through the Perfect Guru, consider this:
ਬਿਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਫਲੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
bin sevaa fal kabahu na paavas sevaa karanee saaree |2|
without selfless service, no one ever receives the fruits of their rewards. Serving the Lord is the most excellent action. ||2||
ਨਿਧਨਿਆ ਧਨੁ ਨਿਗੁਰਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਿੰਮਾਣਿਆ ਤੂ ਮਾਣੁ ॥
nidhaniaa dhan niguriaa gur ninmaaniaa too maan |
You are the wealth of the poor, the Guru of the guru-less, the honor of the dishonored.
ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਮਾਣਕੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਕੜਿਆ ਨਿਤਾਣਿਆ ਤੂ ਤਾਣੁ ॥
andhulai maanak gur pakarriaa nitaaniaa too taan |
I am blind; I have grasped hold of the jewel, the Guru. You are the strength of the weak.
ਹੋਮ ਜਪਾ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
hom japaa nahee jaaniaa guramatee saach pachhaan |
He is not known through burnt offerings and ritual chanting; the True Lord is known through the Guru's Teachings.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਦਰਿ ਢੋਈ ਝੂਠਾ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੩॥
naam binaa naahee dar dtoee jhootthaa aavan jaan |3|
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, no one finds shelter in the Court of the Lord; the false come and go in reincarnation. ||3||
ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
saachaa naam salaaheeai saache te tripat hoe |
So praise the True Name, and through the True Name, you will find satisfaction.
ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਜੀਐ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਮੈਲਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
giaan ratan man maajeeai bahurr na mailaa hoe |
When the mind is cleaned with the jewel of spiritual wisdom, it does not become dirty again.
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
jab lag saahib man vasai tab lag bighan na hoe |
As long as the Lord and Master dwells in the mind, no obstacles are encountered.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੇ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥
naanak sir de chhutteeai man tan saachaa soe |4|10|
O Nanak, giving one's head, one is emancipated, and the mind and body become true. ||4||10||

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰਮਾਇਲੁ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
jogee jugat naam niramaaeil taa kai mail na raatee |
The Yogi who is joined to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is pure; he is not stained by even a particle of dirt.
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਗੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਗਤਿ ਬੀਤੀ ॥੧॥
preetam naath sadaa sach sange janam maran gat beetee |1|
The True Lord, his Beloved, is always with him; the rounds of birth and death are ended for him. ||1||
ਗੁਸਾਈ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
gusaaee teraa kahaa naam kaise jaatee |
O Lord of the Universe, what is Your Name, and what is it like?
ਜਾ ਤਉ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਹਿ ਪੂਛਉ ਬਾਤ ਨਿਰੰਤੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa tau bheetar mehal bulaaveh poochhau baat nirantee |1| rahaau |
If You summon me into the Mansion of Your Presence, I will ask You, how I can become one with You. ||1||Pause||
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨ ਇਸਨਾਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਪੂਜੇ ਪਾਤੀ ॥
brahaman braham giaan isanaanee har gun pooje paatee |
He alone is a Brahmin, who takes his cleansing bath in the spiritual wisdom of God, and whose leaf-offerings in worship are the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਏਕਾ ਜੋਤੀ ॥੨॥
eko naam ek naaraaein tribhavan ekaa jotee |2|
The One Name, the One Lord, and His One Light pervade the three worlds. ||2||
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਡੰਡੀ ਇਹੁ ਘਟੁ ਛਾਬਾ ਤੋਲਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਜਾਚੀ ॥
jihavaa ddanddee ihu ghatt chhaabaa tolau naam ajaachee |
My tongue is the balance of the scale, and this heart of mine is the pan of the scale; I weigh the immeasurable Naam.
ਏਕੋ ਹਾਟੁ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਭਾਤੀ ॥੩॥
eko haatt saahu sabhanaa sir vanajaare ik bhaatee |3|
There is one store, and one banker above all; the merchants deal in the one commodity. ||3||
ਦੋਵੈ ਸਿਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਿਬੇੜੇ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਜੀਅਹੁ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਭਰਾਤੀ ॥
dovai sire satiguroo niberre so boojhai jis ek liv laagee jeeahu rahai nibharaatee |
The True Guru saves us at both ends; he alone understands, who is lovingly focused on the One Lord; his inner being remains free of doubt.
ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸਾਏ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ਸਦਾ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥੪॥
sabad vasaae bharam chukaae sadaa sevak din raatee |4|
The Word of the Shabad abides within, and doubt is ended, for those who constantly serve, day and night. ||4||
ਊਪਰਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਗਗਨ ਪਰਿ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਅਗਮੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪੁਨਿ ਵਾਸੀ ॥
aoopar gagan gagan par gorakh taa kaa agam guroo pun vaasee |
Above is the sky of the mind, and beyond this sky is the Lord, the Protector of the World; the Inaccessible Lord God; the Guru abides there as well.
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਭਇਆ ਉਦਾਸੀ ॥੫॥੧੧॥
gur bachanee baahar ghar eko naanak bheaa udaasee |5|11|
According to the Word of the Guru's Teachings, what is outside is the same as what is inside the home of the self. Nanak has become a detached renunciate. ||5||11||

ਉਗ੍ਰ ਦਤ ਕੋ ਜੀਤਿ ਰਨ ਜਿਯਤ ਬਿਲੋਕਿਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥
augr dat ko jeet ran jiyat bilokiyo jaae |
She won the war and then went to see Uger Datt.
ਅਤਿ ਰਾਨੀ ਹਰਖਤਿ ਭਈ ਰਾਜਾ ਲਿਯੋ ਉਠਾਇ ॥੩੦॥
at raanee harakhat bhee raajaa liyo utthaae |30|
She was pleased to see him (alive) and lifted him up.(30)

ਰਾਨੀ ਲਯੋ ਉਠਾਇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
raanee layo utthaae nripat sukh paae kai |
With great happiness Rani picked him up.
ਅਮਿਤ ਦਏ ਤਿਨ ਦਾਨ ਸਦਨ ਮੈ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥
amit de tin daan sadan mai aae kai |
She brought him home and distributed abundance of Alms.
ਘਨੇ ਘਰਨ ਕੌ ਘਾਇ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਪਤਿ ਘਾਇਯੋ ॥
ghane gharan kau ghaae satru pat ghaaeiyo |
After annihilating many enemies,
ਹੋ ਰਾਜ ਕਿਯੋ ਪੁਨਿ ਆਨਿ ਹਰਖ ਉਪਜਾਇਯੋ ॥੩੧॥
ho raaj kiyo pun aan harakh upajaaeiyo |31|
She ruled over with great contentment,(31)

ਧੰਨਿ ਰਾਨੀ ਤੈ ਜੀਤਿ ਰਨ ਹਮ ਕੋ ਲਯੋ ਉਬਾਰਿ ॥
dhan raanee tai jeet ran ham ko layo ubaar |
‘Rani you are praiseworthy, after winning the war you have saved me,
ਆਜ ਲਗੇ ਚੌਦਹ ਭਵਨ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਤੋ ਸੀ ਨਾਰਿ ॥੩੨॥
aaj lage chauadah bhavan hoe na to see naar |32|
‘In all the fourteen worlds, there has never been and never will be a woman like you.(32)
ਧੰਨ ਰਾਨੀ ਤੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਅਰਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਪਤਿ ਲੀਨ ॥
dhan raanee tai maar ar maar satru pat leen |
‘Rani, you are admirable, you defeated the enemy and its Raja too.
ਰਨ ਤੇ ਲਯੋ ਉਚਾਇ ਮੁਹਿ ਨਯੋ ਜਨਮ ਜਨੁ ਦੀਨ ॥੩੩॥
ran te layo uchaae muhi nayo janam jan deen |33|
‘And getting me out of the fighting-grounds, you have given me a new life.(33)

ਅਬ ਚੇਰੋ ਮੈ ਭਯੋ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ॥
ab chero mai bhayo tihaaro |
‘Listen, Rani, you have endowed me a new life, now I am your slave.
ਅਬ ਯੌ ਬਸੀ ਮੋਰ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
ab yau basee mor man maahee |
ਤੋ ਸਮ ਔਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕਹੂੰ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੩੪॥
to sam aauar triyaa kahoon naahee |34|
‘And I am absolutely satisfied that there could never be a woman like you in the world.’(34)(1)

raavee nad aoopar basai naar saahibaa naam |
On the banks of Ravi, there used to live a woman called Sahiban.
ਮਿਰਜਾ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਕਰਤ ਆਠਹੂੰ ਜਾਮ ॥੧॥
mirajaa ke sang dosatee karat aatthahoon jaam |1|
She created friendship with Mirza and used to spend all the eight watches of the day with him.(1)

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦੂਲਹ ਬ︀ਯਾਹਨ ਆਯੋ ॥
taa ko doolah bayaahan aayo |
ਯਹ ਮਿਰਜਾ ਚਿਤ ਚਿੰਤ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥
yeh mirajaa chit chint badtaayo |
A bridegroom was arranged to marry her and this put Mirza in distress.
ਯਾ ਕੋ ਜਤਨ ਕੌਨ ਸੋ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
yaa ko jatan kauan so keejai |
ਯਾ ਤੇ ਯਹ ਅਬਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
yaa te yeh abalaa har leejai |2|
He pondered over some means to save the lady in distress.(2)
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਹੂੰ ਕੇ ਜਿਯ ਮੈ ਯੋ ਆਈ ॥
triy hoon ke jiy mai yo aaee |
ਪ︀ਯਾਰੋ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਛੋਰਿਯੋ ਜਾਈ ॥
payaaro mitr na chhoriyo jaaee |
The woman thought, too, that it would be difficult to desertthe lover.
ਯਾ ਕੌ ਬ︀ਯਾਹਿ ਕਹਾ ਮੈ ਕਰਿਹੌ ॥
yaa kau bayaeh kahaa mai karihau |
ਯਾਹੀ ਸੋ ਜੀਹੌ ਕੈ ਮਰਿਹੌ ॥੩॥
yaahee so jeehau kai marihau |3|
‘I will only marry you and will live with you and die with you.’(3)
ਮੀਤ ਭੋਗ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਮੈ ਰਸੀ ॥
meet bhog tumare mai rasee |
ਪਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਭਾਵ ਜਾਨਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਬਸੀ ॥
pat triy bhaav jaan grih basee |
‘I have considered you as my husband and I will live in your house.
ਮੇਰੋ ਚਿਤ ਚੋਰਿ ਤੈ ਲੀਨੋ ॥
mero chit chor tai leeno |
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਤ ਬ︀ਯਾਹ ਨਹਿ ਕੀਨੋ ॥੪॥
taa te jaat bayaah neh keeno |4|
‘You have stolen my heart and I cannot go to marry any body else.(4)

ਸਾਚ ਕਹਤ ਜਿਯ ਕੀ ਤੁਮੈ ਸੁਨਿਹੌ ਮੀਤ ਬਨਾਇ ॥

Listen, my friend, I am speaking from my heart,
ਮੁਖ ਮਾਗੇ ਬਰੁ ਦੇਤ ਨਹਿ ਘੋਲ ਘੁਮਾਈ ਮਾਇ ॥੫॥
mukh maage bar det neh ghol ghumaaee maae |5|
‘The mother, who does not acquiesce, and does not give what (a daughter desires) is worth forsaking.(5)

ਅਬ ਮੁਹਿ ਮੀਤ ਕਹੋ ਕਾ ਕਰੌਂ ॥
ab muhi meet kaho kaa karauan |
ਤੋਹਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਵਾ ਕੌ ਨਹਿ ਬਰੌਂ ॥
tohi chhaadd vaa kau neh barauan |
‘Tell me, my friend, what should I do? Forsaking you I will, never go to some body else.
ਮੋ ਕਹੁ ਬਾਜ ਪ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਪਰ ਡਾਰੋ ॥
mo kahu baaj prisatt par ddaaro |
ਆਪਨ ਲੈ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਗ ਸਿਧਾਰੋ ॥੬॥
aapan lai kar sang sidhaaro |6|
‘Taking me on the back of the horse, take me away.(6)
