ਇਹ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੌ ਬਿਸਨ ਜੂ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦਾ ਕੋ ਸਤ ਟਾਰਿ ॥
eih charitr sau bisan joo brindaa ko sat ttaar |
Playing such a deception, Vishnu violated the chastity of Brinda,
ਆਨਿ ਰਾਜ ਅਪਨੋ ਲਯੋ ਜਾਲੰਧਰ ਕਹ ਮਾਰਿ ॥੩੦॥੧॥
aan raaj apano layo jaalandhar keh maar |30|1|
And then retained his kingdom by annihilating Jalandhar.(30)(1)

ਜਹਾਗੀਰ ਜਬ ਤਖਤ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥

ਬੁਰਕਾ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਇਕ ਆਵੈ ॥
burakaa pahir naar ik aavai |
When (Emperor) Jehangir was holding his court, a woman came in wearing the veil.
ਖੀਸੇ ਕਾਟਿ ਬਹੁਨ ਕੇ ਲੇਈ ॥
kheese kaatt bahun ke leee |
ਨਿਜ ਮੁਖ ਕਿਸੂ ਨ ਦੇਖਨ ਦੇਈ ॥੧॥
nij mukh kisoo na dekhan deee |1|
She picked pockets of many and never showed her face.(1)
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਭੇਦ ਏਕ ਨਰ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
taa ko bhed ek nar paayo |
ਔਰ ਨ ਕਾਹੂੰ ਤੀਰ ਜਤਾਯੋ ॥
aauar na kaahoon teer jataayo |
One man detected the secret but did not divulged to anyone else.
ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਭਏ ਆਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
praat bhe aaee triy jaanee |
ਚਿਤ ਕੇ ਬਿਖੈ ਇਹੈ ਮਤਿ ਠਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
chit ke bikhai ihai mat tthaanee |2|
Next morning when he saw her coming in, he planned a way.(2)
ਪਨਹੀ ਹਾਥ ਆਪਨੇ ਲਈ ॥
panahee haath aapane lee |
ਅਧਿਕ ਮਾਰਿ ਤਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੌ ਦਈ ॥
adhik maar taa triy kau dee |
He took of his shoe and started to beat her,
ਸਤਰ ਛੋਰਿ ਆਈ ਕ︀ਯੋਨ ਚਾਰੀ ॥
satar chhor aaee kayon chaaree |
ਜੂਤਿਨ ਸੌ ਕਮਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਡਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
jootin sau kamaree kar ddaaree |3|
Saying, ‘Why have you come out of the house,’ he nearly made her to faint.(3)

Beating her hard, he took her ornaments and,
ਕਿਹ ਨਿਮਿਤ ਆਈ ਇਹਾ ਐਸੇ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰਿ ॥੪॥
kih nimit aaee ihaa aise bachan uchaar |4|
shouted, ‘Why have you come here?’(4)

ਸਭਹੂੰ ਇਹੈ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
sabhahoon ihai chit mai jaanee |
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਪਹਿਚਾਨੀ ॥
taa kee naar triyaa pahichaanee |
People thought that she was his own wife,
ਬਿਨੁ ਪੂਛੇ ਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਕ︀ਯੋਨ ਆਈ ॥
bin poochhe pat ke kayon aaee |
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਆਜੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਤੈਂ ਖਾਈ ॥੫॥
jaa te aaj maar tain khaaee |5|
Who had come out of the house without his permission and got beating.(5)
ਜਬ ਲੌ ਤਾਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਸੁਧਿ ਆਈ ॥
jab lau taeh triyeh sudh aaee |
ਤਬ ਲੌ ਗਯੋ ਵਹ ਪੁਰਖ ਲੁਕਾਈ ॥
tab lau gayo veh purakh lukaaee |
By the time the woman regained consciousness he had gone on his away.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਸਤ ਨ ਤਹ ਪੁਨਿ ਗਈ ॥
taa te trasat na teh pun gee |
ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਹੁਤੀ ਤਜਿ ਦਈ ॥੬॥
choree karat hutee taj dee |6|
Dreaded by him she never came there again and abandoned stealing.(6)(1)

ਅਭੈ ਸਾਡ ਰਾਜਾ ਇਕ ਭਾਰੋ ॥
abhai saadd raajaa ik bhaaro |
ਕਹਲੂਰ ਕੇ ਦੇਸ ਉਜਿਯਾਰੋ ॥
kahaloor ke des ujiyaaro |
Abhai Saandh was an auspicious Raja of the country of Kahloor.
ਖਾਨ ਤਤਾਰ ਖੇਤ ਤਿਨ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
khaan tataar khet tin maariyo |
ਨਾਕਨ ਕੋ ਕੂਆ ਭਰ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧॥
naakan ko kooaa bhar ddaariyo |1|
He had killed Tatar Khan in the fight and cut off his nose.(1)
ਤਾ ਪੈ ਚੜੇ ਖਾਨ ਰਿਸਿ ਭਾਰੇ ॥
taa pai charre khaan ris bhaare |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
bhaat bhaat tin nripat sanghaare |
Infuriated, many Khans raided on him and massacred a number of Rajas.
ਹਾਰੇ ਸਭੈ ਉਪਾਇ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥
haare sabhai upaae banaayo |
ਛਜੂਅਹਿ ਗਜੂਅਹਿ ਖਾਨ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥੨॥
chhajooeh gajooeh khaan bulaayo |2|
In spite of their losses in the battles, they called in Chhaju and Gaju Khans.(2)
ਕਾਖ ਬਿਖੈ ਕਬੂਤਰ ਇਕ ਰਾਖਿਯੋ ॥
kaakh bikhai kabootar ik raakhiyo |
ਤਿਨ ਸੌ ਬਚਨ ਬਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਭਾਖਿਯੋ ॥
tin sau bachan bakatr te bhaakhiyo |
He (Khan), who used to keep a pigeon under his arm, announced,
ਯਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਜੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਕੋਊ ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
yaa nrip ko ju buraa koaoo kar hai |
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਪ ਮੂਡ ਇਹ ਪਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
taa ko paap moodd ih par hai |3|
‘Any body who treated Raja adversely, will be cursed.’(3)
ਯਹ ਸੁਨਿ ਬਚਨ ਮਾਨਿ ਤੇ ਗਏ ॥
yeh sun bachan maan te ge |
ਭੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਨ ਚੀਨਤ ਭਏ ॥
bhed abhed na cheenat bhe |
Harkening to this they consented but had not discerned the secret.
ਜਾਇ ਰਾਵ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਯਹੈ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥
jaae raav prat yahai uchaaro |
ਤਵ ਦੇਖਨ ਕੌ ਹਿਯੋ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥੪॥
tav dekhan kau hiyo hamaaro |4|
‘Go and tell the Raja that we wan ted to have the pleasure of meeting him.( 4)
ਯੌ ਸੁਨਿ ਬਚਨ ਰਾਵ ਤਿਹ ਆਯੋ ॥
yau sun bachan raav tih aayo |
ਚਾਰਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬੈਠਾਯੋ ॥
chaar chaar bheetar baitthaayo |
Getting such communication he came over, but on his way, he established the posts of four persons each.
ਤਿਨ ਆਯੁਧ ਦੇਖਨ ਕੌ ਲਏ ॥
tin aayudh dekhan kau le |
ਹਾਥੋ ਹਾਥ ਕਾਢਿ ਕੈ ਦਏ ॥੫॥
haatho haath kaadt kai de |5|
Then he requested Raja to show him his arms, and he readily agreed.(5)
ਆਯੁਧੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਐਸ ਬਿਧਿ ਦਏ ॥
aayudh kaadt ais bidh de |
ਜੋਰੇ ਏਕ ਬਨਾਵਤ ਭਏ ॥
jore ek banaavat bhe |
He gave in all those and, then, ordered new clothes them.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਬਾਹ ਸੀਵਿ ਦੋਊ ਲੀਨੀ ॥
jaa kee baah seev doaoo leenee |
ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਧੋ ਮੁਸਕੈ ਜਨ ਦੀਨੀ ॥੬॥
bin baadho musakai jan deenee |6|
The sleeves of those were prepared such that, without tying even, the arms could not be moved.(6)
ਏਕ ਭਾਟ ਕੌ ਭੇਦ ਬਤਾਯੋ ॥
ek bhaatt kau bhed bataayo |
ਰਾਜਾ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਪੈ ਕਹਾਯੋ ॥
raajaa ke mukh pai kahaayo |
He trained a bard to say to Raja at his face,
ਜੋ ਸਭ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਦੈ ਮੁਝ ਡਾਰੇ ॥
jo sabh sasatr dai mujh ddaare |
ਤੌ ਦਾਤਾ ਤੂ ਜਾਨ ਹਮਾਰੈ ॥੭॥
tau daataa too jaan hamaarai |7|
‘If you give me all your arms, only then I will consider you benevolent person.’(7)
ਯਹ ਸੁਨਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਦੈ ਡਾਰੇ ॥
yeh sun nripat sasatr dai ddaare |
ਹੋਰ ਰਹੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਨ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
hor rahe mantreen nivaare |
Acquiescing to the request, the Raja handed over the arms in spite of the warning of his ministers;
ਜਾਨ︀ਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਯੁਧ ਭਯੋ ॥
jaanayo nripat niraayudh bhayo |
ਬਾਗੋ ਆਨਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਪਹਿਰਯੋ ॥੮॥
baago aan taeh pahirayo |8|
They had envisaged the fact, that the Raja could not use his arms now, as he was going to wear white clothes.(8)

I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to the Guru, the Lord of the World. ||1||Pause||
ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਤੁਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਦਾਤੇ ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੧॥
mohi niragun tum pooran daate deenaa naath deaal |1|
I am unworthy; You are the Perfect Giver. You are the Merciful Master of the meek. ||1||
ਊਠਤ ਬੈਠਤ ਸੋਵਤ ਜਾਗਤ ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਧਨ ਮਾਲ ॥੨॥
aootthat baitthat sovat jaagat jeea praan dhan maal |2|
While standing up and sitting down, while sleeping and awake, You are my soul, my breath of life, my wealth and property. ||2||
ਦਰਸਨ ਪਿਆਸ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੩॥੮॥੯॥
darasan piaas bahut man merai naanak daras nihaal |3|8|9|
Within my mind there is such a great thirst for the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. Nanak is enraptured with Your Glance of Grace. ||3||8||9||

ਕੋਊ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੋ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਮੀਤੁ ॥
koaoo hai mero saajan meet |
Is there any friend or companion of mine,
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ਨੀਤ ॥
har naam sunaavai neet |
who will constantly share the Lord's Name with me?
ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਪਰੀਤਿ ॥
binasai dukh bipareet |
Will he rid me of my pains and evil tendencies?
ਸਭੁ ਅਰਪਉ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਚੀਤੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sabh arpau man tan cheet |1| rahaau |
I would surrender my mind, body, consciousness and everything. ||1||Pause||
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਆਪਨ ਕੀਤ ॥
koee viralaa aapan keet |
How rare is that one whom the Lord makes His own,
ਸੰਗਿ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤ ॥
sang charan kamal man seet |
and whose mind is sewn into the Lord's Lotus Feet.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਦੀਤ ॥੧॥
kar kirapaa har jas deet |1|
Granting His Grace, the Lord blesses him with His Praise. ||1||
ਹਰਿ ਭਜਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤ ॥
har bhaj janam padaarath jeet |
Vibrating, meditating on the Lord, he is victorious in this precious human life,
ਕੋਟਿ ਪਤਿਤ ਹੋਹਿ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥
kott patit hohi puneet |
and millions of sinners are sanctified.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਕੀਤ ॥੨॥੧॥੧੦॥੧੯॥
naanak daas bal bal keet |2|1|10|19|
Slave Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to Him. ||2||1||10||19||

O Lord, Your Name is the support of my mind and body.
ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮੑਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
khin pal reh na skau bin sevaa mai guramat naam samaare |1| rahaau |
I cannot survive for a moment, even for an instant, without serving You. Following the Guru's Teachings, I dwell upon the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
har har har har har man dhiaavahu mai har har naam piaare |
Within my mind, I meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har, Har. The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is so dear to me.
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
deen deaal bhe prabh tthaakur gur kai sabad savaare |1|
When God, my Lord and Master, became merciful to me the meek one, I was exalted by the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||
ਮਧਸੂਦਨ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਮਾਧੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥
madhasoodan jagajeevan maadho mere tthaakur agam apaare |
Almighty Lord, Slayer of demons, Life of the World, my Lord and Master, inaccessible and infinite:
ਇਕ ਬਿਨਉ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਉ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਮੈ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਪਖਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
eik binau benatee krau gur aagai mai saadhoo charan pakhaare |2|
I offer this one prayer to the Guru, to bless me, that I may wash the feet of the Holy. ||2||
ਸਹਸ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ॥
sehas netr netr hai prabh kau prabh eko purakh niraare |
The thousands of eyes are the eyes of God; the One God, the Primal Being, remains unattached.
ਸਹਸ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਏਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੋ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
sehas moorat eko prabh tthaakur prabh eko guramat taare |3|
The One God, our Lord and Master, has thousands of forms; God alone, through the Guru's Teachings, saves us. ||3||
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਮੋਦਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
guramat naam damodar paaeaa har har naam ur dhaare |
Following the Guru's Teachings, I have been blessed with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. I have enshrined within my heart the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਬਨੀ ਅਤਿ ਮੀਠੀ ਜਿਉ ਗੂੰਗਾ ਗਟਕ ਸਮੑਾਰੇ ॥੪॥
har har kathaa banee at meetthee jiau goongaa gattak samaare |4|
The sermon of the Lord, Har, Har, is so very sweet; like the mute, I taste its sweetness, but I cannot describe it at all. ||4||
ਰਸਨਾ ਸਾਦ ਚਖੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਅਤਿ ਫੀਕੇ ਲੋਭ ਬਿਕਾਰੇ ॥
rasanaa saad chakhai bhaae doojai at feeke lobh bikaare |
The tongue savors the bland, insipid taste of the love of duality, greed and corruption.
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਦ ਚਖਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਸਭ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਸਾਦ ਬਿਸਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
jo guramukh saad chakheh raam naamaa sabh an ras saad bisaare |5|
The Gurmukh tastes the flavor of the Lord's Name, and all other tastes and flavors are forgotten. ||5||
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੁਣਿ ਕਹਤਿਆ ਪਾਪ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
guramat raam naam dhan paaeaa sun kahatiaa paap nivaare |
Following the Guru's Teachings, I have obtained the wealth of the Lord's Name; hearing it, and chanting it, sins are eradicated.
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੬॥
dharam raae jam nerr na aavai mere tthaakur ke jan piaare |6|
The Messenger of Death and the Righteous Judge of Dharma do not even approach the beloved servant of my Lord and Master. ||6||
ਸਾਸ ਸਾਸ ਸਾਸ ਹੈ ਜੇਤੇ ਮੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮੑਾਰੇ ॥
saas saas saas hai jete mai guramat naam samaare |
With as many breaths as I have, I chant the Naam, under Guru's Instructions.
ਸਾਸੁ ਸਾਸੁ ਜਾਇ ਨਾਮੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੋ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਾਸੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
saas saas jaae naamai bin so birathaa saas bikaare |7|
Each and every breath which escapes me without the Naam - that breath is useless and corrupt. ||7||
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਨੀ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਮੇਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
kripaa kripaa kar deen prabh saranee mo kau har jan mel piaare |
Please grant Your Grace; I am meek; I seek Your Sanctuary, God. Unite me with Your beloved, humble servants.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੇ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak daasan daas kehat hai ham daasan ke panihaare |8|1|
Nanak, the slave of Your slaves, says, I am the water-carrier of Your slaves. ||8||1||
