ਦੇਵਰਾਜ ਜਿਹ ਦੈਤ ਕੌ ਜੀਤ ਸਕਤ ਨਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
devaraaj jih dait kau jeet sakat neh jaae |
The devil, which could not be eliminated by superior human beings,
ਸੋ ਅਬਲਾ ਇਹ ਛਲ ਭਏ ਜਮ ਪੁਰ ਦਯੋ ਪਠਾਇ ॥੧੩॥
so abalaa ih chhal bhe jam pur dayo patthaae |13|
Was despatched to the domain of death through the clever Chritar of the woman.(13)(1)

ਰਾਵੀ ਤੀਰ ਜਾਟ ਇਕ ਰਹੈ ॥

ਮਹੀਵਾਲ ਨਾਮ ਜਗ ਕਹੈ ॥
maheevaal naam jag kahai |
On the banks of river Ravi, a peasant Jat called Mahinwal used to live.
ਨਿਰਖਿ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਬਸਿ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਈ ॥
nirakh sohanee bas hvai gee |
ਤਾ ਪੈ ਰੀਝਿ ਸੁ ਆਸਿਕ ਭਈ ॥੧॥
taa pai reejh su aasik bhee |1|
A woman named Sohani fell in love with him and came under his dominance.(1)
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਭਾਨ ਅਸਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
jab hee bhaan asat hvai jaavai |
ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪੈਰਿ ਨਦੀ ਤਹ ਆਵੈ ॥
tab hee pair nadee teh aavai |
At the Sunset, she used to swim across the river and there (to see him).
ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਗਹਿ ਘਟ ਉਰ ਕੇ ਤਰ ਧਰੈ ॥
drirr geh ghatt ur ke tar dharai |
ਛਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਪੈਰ ਪਾਰ ਤਿਹ ਪਰੈ ॥੨॥
chhin meh pair paar tih parai |2|
Holding an earthen pitcher in her hand she would jump in (the river) and arrive at the other side.(2)
ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਉਠਿ ਕੈ ਜਬ ਧਾਈ ॥
ek divas utth kai jab dhaaee |
ਸੋਵਤ ਹੁਤੋ ਬੰਧੁ ਲਖਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
sovat huto bandh lakh paaee |
One day when she ran out, her brother, who was slumbering there, saw her.
ਪਾਛੈ ਲਾਗਿ ਭੇਦ ਤਿਹ ਚਹਿਯੋ ॥
paachhai laag bhed tih chahiyo |
ਕਛੂ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਨ ਲਹਿਯੋ ॥੩॥
kachhoo sohanee taeh na lahiyo |3|
He followed her and discovered the secret but Sohani did not realise.(3)

ਛਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਾਲਾ ਤਿਸੀ ਠੌਰ ਧਾਈ ॥
chhakee prem baalaa tisee tthauar dhaaee |
Imbued in love, she ran to the direction,
ਜਹਾ ਦਾਬਿ ਕੈ ਬੂਟ ਮੈ ਮਾਟ ਆਈ ॥
jahaa daab kai boott mai maatt aaee |
Where, under the bush, she had hidden the pitcher.
ਲੀਯੌ ਹਾਥ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਧਸੀ ਨੀਰ ਮ︀ਯਾਨੇ ॥
leeyau haath taa kau dhasee neer mayaane |
She picked up the pitcher, jumped into the water,
ਮਿਲੀ ਜਾਇ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਯਹੀ ਭੇਦ ਜਾਨੇ ॥੪॥
milee jaae taa kau yahee bhed jaane |4|
And came to meet her lover but none could fathom the secret.(4)
ਮਿਲੀ ਜਾਇ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਫਿਰੀ ਫੇਰਿ ਬਾਲਾ ॥
milee jaae taa kau firee fer baalaa |
ਦਿਪੈ ਚਾਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਮਨੋ ਆਗਿ ਜ੍ਵਾਲਾ ॥
dipai chaar sobhaa mano aag jvaalaa |
Thus she would go to meet him again and again, to quench her thirst of the fire of passion.
ਲਏ ਹਾਥ ਮਾਟਾ ਨਦੀ ਪੈਰਿ ਆਈ ॥
le haath maattaa nadee pair aaee |
ਕੋਊ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਿਨੀ ਬਾਤ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥
koaoo naeh jaanai tinee baat paaee |5|
She would row back with the pitcher, as if nothing had happened.(5)
ਭਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਲੈ ਕਾਚ ਮਾਟਾ ਸਿਧਾਯੋ ॥
bhayo praat lai kaach maattaa sidhaayo |
ਤਿਸੈ ਡਾਰਿ ਦੀਨੋ ਉਸੇ ਰਾਖਿ ਆਯੋ ॥
tisai ddaar deeno use raakh aayo |
(One day) Her brother reached there early in the morning with an unbaked earthen pitcher.
ਭਏ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਰੈਨਿ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਸਿਧਾਈ ॥
bhe sohanee rain jab hee sidhaaee |
He broke into pieces the baked one and put the unbaked-one in its place.
ਵਹੈ ਮਾਟ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਛਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਆਈ ॥੬॥
vahai maatt lai ke chhakee prem aaee |6|
The night fell, Sohani came and, taking that pitcher, plunged into water.(6)

ਅਧਿਕ ਜਬ ਸਰਿਤਾ ਤਰੀ ਮਾਟਿ ਗਯੋ ਤਬ ਫੂਟਿ ॥
adhik jab saritaa taree maatt gayo tab foott |
When she had swam about half way, the pitcher started to crumble
ਡੁਬਕੀ ਲੇਤੇ ਤਨ ਗਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਗੇ ਛੂਟਿ ॥੭॥
ddubakee lete tan gayo praan bahur ge chhoott |7|
And her soul abandoned her body.(7)

ਮੇਹੀਵਾਲ ਅਧਿਕ ਦੁਖੁ ਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥

ਕਹਾ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਰਹੀ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
kahaa sohanee rahee bichaariyo |
Mahinwal was dismayed, ‘Where has Sohani gone?’
ਨਦੀ ਬੀਚ ਖੋਜਤ ਬਹੁ ਭਯੋ ॥
nadee beech khojat bahu bhayo |
ਆਈ ਲਹਿਰ ਡੂਬਿ ਸੋ ਗਯੋ ॥੮॥
aaee lahir ddoob so gayo |8|
He jumped into the river to search, but in the waves lost himself.(8)
ਏਕ ਪੁਰਖ ਯਹ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
ek purakh yeh charitr sudhaariyo |
ਮੇਹੀਵਾਲ ਸੋਹਨਿਯਹਿ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
meheevaal sohaniyeh maariyo |
Some said, Mahinwal himself killed Sohani,
ਕਾਚੋ ਘਟ ਵਾ ਕੋ ਦੈ ਬੋਰਿਯੋ ॥
kaacho ghatt vaa ko dai boriyo |
ਮੇਹੀਵਾਲ ਹੂੰ ਕੋ ਸਿਰ ਤੋਰਿਯੋ ॥੯॥
meheevaal hoon ko sir toriyo |9|
But the fact is, with unbaked pitcher she was killea and then he was killed by hitting his head.(9)(1)

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
guramukh saache kaa bhau paavai |
The Gurmukh lives in the Fear of God, the True Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਘੜੁ ਘੜਾਵੈ ॥
guramukh baanee agharr gharraavai |
Through the Word of the Guru's Bani, the Gurmukh refines the unrefined.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
guramukh niramal har gun gaavai |
The Gurmukh sings the immaculate, Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
guramukh pavitru param pad paavai |
The Gurmukh attains the supreme, sanctified status.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੋਮਿ ਰੋਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥
guramukh rom rom har dhiaavai |
The Gurmukh meditates on the Lord with every hair of his body.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨੭॥
naanak guramukh saach samaavai |27|
O Nanak, the Gurmukh merges in Truth. ||27||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
guramukh parachai bed beechaaree |
The Gurmukh is pleasing to the True Guru; this is contemplation on the Vedas.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਤਰੀਐ ਤਾਰੀ ॥
guramukh parachai tareeai taaree |
Pleasing the True Guru, the Gurmukh is carried across.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥
guramukh parachai su sabad giaanee |
Pleasing the True Guru, the Gurmukh receives the spiritual wisdom of the Shabad.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਅੰਤਰ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
guramukh parachai antar bidh jaanee |
Pleasing the True Guru, the Gurmukh comes to know the path within.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
guramukh paaeeai alakh apaar |
The Gurmukh attains the unseen and infinite Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੨੮॥
naanak guramukh mukat duaar |28|
O Nanak, the Gurmukh finds the door of liberation. ||28||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
guramukh akath kathai beechaar |
The Gurmukh speaks the unspoken wisdom.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਬਹੈ ਸਪਰਵਾਰਿ ॥
guramukh nibahai saparavaar |
In the midst of his family, the Gurmukh lives a spiritual life.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
guramukh japeeai antar piaar |
The Gurmukh lovingly meditates deep within.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਚਾਰਿ ॥
guramukh paaeeai sabad achaar |
The Gurmukh obtains the Shabad, and righteous conduct.
ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣਾਈ ॥
sabad bhed jaanai jaanaaee |
He knows the mystery of the Shabad, and inspires others to know it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਲਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੨੯॥
naanak haumai jaal samaaee |29|
O Nanak, burning away his ego, he merges in the Lord. ||29||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਜੀ ॥
guramukh dharatee saachai saajee |
The True Lord fashioned the earth for the sake of the Gurmukhs.
ਤਿਸ ਮਹਿ ਓਪਤਿ ਖਪਤਿ ਸੁ ਬਾਜੀ ॥
tis meh opat khapat su baajee |
There, he set in motion the play of creation and destruction.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਪੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
gur kai sabad rapai rang laae |
One who is filled with the Word of the Guru's Shabad enshrines love for the Lord.
ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤਉ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
saach rtau pat siau ghar jaae |
Attuned to the Truth, he goes to his home with honor.
ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
saach sabad bin pat nahee paavai |
Without the True Word of the Shabad, no one receives honor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੩੦॥
naanak bin naavai kiau saach samaavai |30|
O Nanak, without the Name, how can one be absorbed in Truth? ||30||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧੀ ਸਭਿ ਬੁਧੀ ॥
guramukh asatt sidhee sabh budhee |
The Gurmukh obtains the eight miraculous spiritual powers, and all wisdom.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਚ ਸੁਧੀ ॥
guramukh bhavajal tareeai sach sudhee |
The Gurmukh crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, and obtains true understanding.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਰ ਅਪਸਰ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
guramukh sar apasar bidh jaanai |
The Gurmukh knows the ways of truth and untruth.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਨਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
guramukh paravirat naravirat pachhaanai |
The Gurmukh knows worldliness and renunciation.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥
guramukh taare paar utaare |
The Gurmukh crosses over, and carries others across as well.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩੧॥
naanak guramukh sabad nisataare |31|
O Nanak, the Gurmukh is emancipated through the Shabad. ||31||
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
naame raate haumai jaae |
Attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, egotism is dispelled.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
naam rate sach rahe samaae |
Attuned to the Naam, they remain absorbed in the True Lord.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
naam rate jog jugat beechaar |
Attuned to the Naam, they contemplate the Way of Yoga.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
naam rate paaveh mokh duaar |
Attuned to the Naam, they find the door of liberation.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
naam rate tribhavan sojhee hoe |
Attuned to the Naam, they understand the three worlds.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੩੨॥
naanak naam rate sadaa sukh hoe |32|
O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, eternal peace is found. ||32||
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਿਧ ਗੋਸਟਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
naam rate sidh gosatt hoe |
Attuned to the Naam, they attain Sidh Gosht - conversation with the Siddhas.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਤਪੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
naam rate sadaa tap hoe |
Attuned to the Naam, they practice intense meditation forever.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
naam rate sach karanee saar |
Attuned to the Naam, they live the true and excellent lifestyle.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
naam rate gun giaan beechaar |
Attuned to the Naam, they contemplate the Lord's virtues and spiritual wisdom.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ॥
bin naavai bolai sabh vekaar |
Without the Name, all that is spoken is useless.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥੩੩॥
naanak naam rate tin kau jaikaar |33|
O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, their victory is celebrated. ||33||
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
poore gur te naam paaeaa jaae |
Through the Perfect Guru, one obtains the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
jog jugat sach rahai samaae |
The Way of Yoga is to remain absorbed in Truth.
ਬਾਰਹ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਭਰਮਾਏ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਛਿਅ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
baarah meh jogee bharamaae saniaasee chhia chaar |
The Yogis wander in the twelve schools of Yoga; the Sannyaasis in six and four.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
gur kai sabad jo mar jeevai so paae mokh duaar |
One who remains dead while yet alive, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, finds the door of liberation.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸਭਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
bin sabadai sabh doojai laage dekhahu ridai beechaar |
Without the Shabad, all are attached to duality. Contemplate this in your heart, and see.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡੇ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩੪॥
naanak vadde se vaddabhaagee jinee sach rakhiaa ur dhaar |34|
O Nanak, blessed and very fortunate are those who keep the True Lord enshrined in their hearts. ||34||
