ਸੁਨਤ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਲੈ ਅਪਨੇ ਉਰਿ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
sunat kattaaree nripat kee lai apane ur maar |
Immediately learning about this, she pulled a dagger and thrust it into her body,
ਉਰਿ ਹਨਿ ਧੋਲਹਰ ਤੇ ਗਿਰੀ ਹੋਡਿਹਿ ਨੈਨ ਨਿਹਾਰ ॥੭੦॥
aur han dholahar te giree hoddihi nain nihaar |70|
And, with the vision of deer in her eyes, fell down the palace.(70)
ਉਦਰ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਮਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਪਰੀ ਮਹਲ ਤੈ ਟੂਟਿ ॥

She had fallen over the palace after pushing the dagger through her
ਏਕ ਘਰੀ ਸਸਤਕ ਰਹੀ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਗੇ ਛੂਟਿ ॥੭੧॥
ek gharee sasatak rahee bahur praan ge chhoott |71|
Body and ultimately lost her breath.(71)

ਜੋ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਆਪਨੋ ਤ︀ਯਾਗ ਔਰ ਪੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
jo banitaa pat aapano tayaag aauar pai jaae |
The woman, who abandons her husband and goes to others,
ਸੋ ਐਸੋ ਪੁਨਿ ਤੁਰਤ ਹੀ ਕ︀ਯੋ ਨਹਿ ਲਹਤ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੭੩॥
so aiso pun turat hee kayo neh lehat sajaae |73|
Why shouldn’t that woman be punished immediately?(73)(1)

ਚੰਦ੍ਰਭਗਾ ਸਰਿਤਾ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਰਾਝਨ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਾਟ ॥
chandrabhagaa saritaa nikatt raajhan naamaa jaatt |
On the banks of the river Chenab, a Jat Peasant, named Ranjha used to live.
ਜੋ ਅਬਲਾ ਨਿਰਖੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਜਾਤ ਸਦਨ ਪਰਿ ਖਾਟ ॥੧॥
jo abalaa nirakhai tisai jaat sadan par khaatt |1|
Any damsel who saw him, would get mad to have love bond with him.(1)

ਮੋਹਤ ਤਿਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਨੈਨ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥

ਜਨੁ ਸਾਵਕ ਸਾਯਕ ਕੇ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
jan saavak saayak ke maare |
His looks had luring effect like the sight of a deer for the hunter.
ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਰੀਝ ਕੇ ਰਹੈ ॥
chit mai adhik reejh ke rahai |
ਰਾਝਨ ਰਾਝਨ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਹੈ ॥੨॥
raajhan raajhan mukh te kahai |2|
They would yearn for him, and always recited ‘Ranjha, Ranjha.’(2)
ਕਰਮ ਕਾਲ ਤਹ ਐਸੋ ਭਯੋ ॥
karam kaal teh aiso bhayo |
ਤੌਨੇ ਦੇਸ ਕਾਲ ਪਰ ਗਯੋ ॥
tauane des kaal par gayo |
There was time when the famine had spread over the country.
ਜਿਯਤ ਨ ਕੌ ਨਰ ਬਚਿਯੋ ਨਗਰ ਮੈ ॥
jiyat na kau nar bachiyo nagar mai |
ਸੋ ਉਬਰਿਯੋ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਧਨੁ ਘਰ ਮੈ ॥੩॥
so ubariyo jaa ke dhan ghar mai |3|
Lot of people did not escape death and the only ones who were wealthy survived.(3)
ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਦੇਵਿ ਇਕ ਰਾਨਿ ਨਗਰ ਮੈ ॥
chitr dev ik raan nagar mai |
ਰਾਝਾ ਏਕ ਪੂਤ ਤਿਹ ਘਰ ਮੈ ॥
raajhaa ek poot tih ghar mai |
In the city a Rani named Chitardevi, there used to live who had this son named Ranjah.
ਤਾ ਕੇ ਔਰ ਨ ਬਚਿਯੋ ਕੋਈ ॥
taa ke aauar na bachiyo koee |
ਮਾਇ ਪੂਤ ਵੈ ਬਾਚੇ ਦੋਈ ॥੪॥
maae poot vai baache doee |4|
Except those two, the mother and the son, none had survived.(4)
ਰਨਿਯਹਿ ਭੂਖ ਅਧਿਕ ਜਬ ਜਾਗੀ ॥
raniyeh bhookh adhik jab jaagee |
ਤਾ ਕੌ ਬੇਚਿ ਮੇਖਲਾ ਸਾਜੀ ॥
taa kau bech mekhalaa saajee |
When the hunger tormented the woman, she thought of a plan.
ਨਿਤਿ ਪੀਸਨ ਪਰ ਦ੍ਵਾਰੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
nit peesan par dvaare jaavai |
ਜੂਠ ਚੂਨ ਚੌਕਾ ਚੁਨਿ ਖਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
jootth choon chauakaa chun khaavai |5|
She would go to other houses to grind flour, and the left-over there, she would bring home to eat.(5)
ਐਸੇ ਹੀ ਭੂਖਨ ਮਰਿ ਗਈ ॥
aise hee bhookhan mar gee |
ਪੁਨਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਤਹਾ ਬ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅਤਿ ਦਈ ॥
pun bidh tahaa brisatt at dee |
ਸੂਕੇ ਭਏ ਹਰੇ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
sooke bhe hare jan saare |
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਜੀਤ ਕੇ ਬਜੇ ਨਗਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
bahur jeet ke baje nagaare |6|
ਤਹਾ ਏਕ ਰਾਝਾ ਹੀ ਉਬਰਿਯੋ ॥
tahaa ek raajhaa hee ubariyo |
ਔਰ ਲੋਗ ਸਭ ਤਹ ਕੋ ਮਰਿਯੋ ॥
aauar log sabh teh ko mariyo |
This way she eliminated her hunger and, then, suddenly, Almighty
ਰਾਝੋ ਜਾਟ ਹੇਤ ਤਿਨ ਪਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
raajho jaatt het tin paariyo |
ਪੂਤ ਭਾਵ ਤੇ ਤਾਹਿ ਜਿਯਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੭॥
poot bhaav te taeh jiyaariyo |7|
Had a benevolent observation; all that was dry became green(7)
ਪੂਤ ਜਾਟ ਕੋ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
poot jaatt ko sabh ko jaanai |
ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥
tis te koaoo na rahiyo pachhaanai |
All, now, realised that he (Ranjha) was the son of a Jat and no one realised his real identity (that he was the son of a Rani).
ਐਸੇ ਕਾਲ ਬੀਤ ਕੈ ਗਯੋ ॥
aise kaal beet kai gayo |
ਤਾ ਮੈ ਮਦਨ ਦਮਾਮੋ ਦਯੋ ॥੮॥
taa mai madan damaamo dayo |8|
The famine subsided and the age of sensuality over powered.(8)
ਮਹਿਖੀ ਚਾਰਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਆਵੈ ॥
mahikhee chaar nit grih aavai |
ਰਾਝਾ ਅਪਨੋ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾਵੈ ॥
raajhaa apano naam sadaavai |
He used to come back in the evening after grazing the cattle and became known as Ranjah.
ਪੂਤ ਜਾਟ ਕੋ ਤਿਹ ਸਭ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
poot jaatt ko tih sabh jaanai |
ਰਾਜਪੂਤੁ ਕੈ ਕੋ ਪਹਿਚਾਨੈ ॥੯॥
raajapoot kai ko pahichaanai |9|
Every body thought him to be the son of a Jat and none acknowledged him as the son of a Raja.(9)
ਇਤੀ ਬਾਤ ਰਾਝਾ ਕੀ ਕਹੀ ॥
eitee baat raajhaa kee kahee |
ਅਬ ਚਲਿ ਬਾਤ ਹੀਰ ਪੈ ਰਹੀ ॥
ab chal baat heer pai rahee |
Thus far we have talked about Ranjha, now we consider Heer.
ਤੁਮ ਕੌ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਾਊ ॥
tum kau taa kee kathaa sunaaoo |
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਤੁਮਰੋ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਸਿਰਾਊ ॥੧੦॥
taa te tumaro hridai siraaoo |10|
I will narrate you their story to delight your mind.(10)
